Kara Walker Exhibition @ Camden Arts Centre

アフリカ系アメリカ人女性アーティスト・Kara Walker（カラ・ウォーカー）のイギリスで初めての個展が、Finchley Road駅近くにあるCamden Arts Centreで、10月11日から翌年1月5日まで開催されている。彼女の作品は正直好きではないのだが、Mが同じ学校卒、友人が彼女の元彼だった縁で多少彼女のことを知っているので、見に行ったのだ。

展示室3室はそれぞれ、ウォーカーお得意の切り絵を使った壁画、ドローイング、人形劇を撮影したビデオに分かれて展示されている。アメリカの奴隷制度がテーマのウォーカーの作品は、切り絵や人形劇といった可愛いイメージとは裏腹に、暴力とセックスのオンパレード、グロテスクで攻撃的、怨恨に溢れたネガティブオーラに満ちている。主に白人である観客に罪の意識を抱かせるための、彼女なりの罰、仕返しなのか？

当時、奴隷が受けた残忍でひどい仕打ちは到底許されるものではないし、忘れてはいけないことだと思う。しかし、私がアートに求めるものは美しいもの、感動したりポジティブになれる経験で、歴史を学ぶためではない。本やドキュメンタリーの方がより多くの知識を得ることが出来るし、実際、ウォーカーの作品よりアウシュビッツ収容所を見学した時の方が、よっぽど心を動かされた。そもそも彼女はどうしてあんなに強烈な怒りを表現するのか？奴隷制を経験した訳でもないし、聞くところによると彼女自身はリベラルでアカデミックな環境の中で、何不自由ない中流階級の人生を過ごしており、奴隷の苦しみを語っても説得力に欠ける。Guardian紙のインタビューでは、「人々が黒人アーティストに期待するような作品は作りたくない」と言っているが、彼女のやっていることはそのまんまだ。メディアでも時折、アメリカ南部の人種差別はひどい等と語っているが、主観的すぎるきらいがあり、彼女の元彼（白人）もウォーカーが差別で苦しんでいたなんて話は聞いてないという。以前ウォーカーが何かのインタビューで、その元彼が性差別主義で人種差別主義者、しかもサディストだと言ったと知って、元彼はショックを受けたというが、私も元彼に会ったことがあるけれど、上記のイメージとは正反対のいい人だ。だから私には、ウォーカーが南部に対する人々のステレオタイプを満足させることを言っているようにしか思えないのだ。

イギリスメディアは時折、アメリカの人種差別はまだまだ根強いようなことを言っているが、イギリスだってどっこいどっこいか、それ以上だと思う。人種差別的発言をすれば逮捕させる事もあるし、差別はいけないと頭に刷り込まれているから、表立っては差別的なことは言わないが。アメリカは確かに奴隷制があったが、そもそもイギリス、スペイン、ポルトガル、フランス、オランダのヨーロッパ諸国が奴隷貿易でアフリカからアメリカ大陸に奴隷を連行してきたのだから、同罪だ。アメリカ人は奴隷制の暗い過去と向き合い、そこから学んでいるが、イギリス人はどうなのか？テレビの歴史番組は、ナチスドイツのことばかりで、奴隷貿易や植民地支配、搾取といった自国の行為はあまり取り上げない。それでアメリカばかりを責めるのは、ちょっとアンフェアだと思う。

The first major UK show of African American artist Kara Walker is held at Camden Arts Centre near Finchley Road station, from Oct 11 to Jan 5, 2014. I knew her work is not my cup of tea, but we went see the show, solely because M went to the same school with her and knows her a little via his friend.

Each three rooms shows a different type of work — Walker’s best known folkloric cut-paper; drawings; and a video work featuring a puppet show. Her work is all about America’s gruesome history of slavery, and is full of violence and sex, filled with negative auras such as aggression, grudges, and grotesques. Does she wants to punish the viewers, predominantly white audience, to make them feel bad about what they did in the past??

What happened to the slaves at that time is unacceptable and unforgiven, and everybody should’t forget about it. But learning history is not what I expect from art, and I rather read a history book or to watch a documentary. I want positive energy from art, not disturbance. In fact I was moved much more by visiting Auschwitz than Walker’s work. I don’t understand the reason of her massive anger she expressed in her work. She hasn’t experienced slavery, but has lived middle-class life in liberal and academic atmosphere, and her work is not convincing but pretentious to me. She says how racist American south is, but her claim is a bit too subjective – does she say these things to meet an expectation of people with stereotype against the south?? Waker said, ‘I don’t want to do what’s expected of me as a black artist’ in Guardian’s interview, but to me, that’s exactly what she does.

British media often portray that racist is still strong in America, but I think UK is the same or even worse. Politically incorrectness is deeply imprinted in their mind, and never say anything face to face or in public just to avoid the trouble. You can even get arrested by making racial remarks here! America had slavery in the past, but British, Spanish, Portuguese, French and Dutch were the ones traded the slaves from Africa to the Americas, so they are equally guilty. Americans do talk about the slavery and learn from it, but British? I seldom see the documentaries and movies about the slave trades nor colonialism and exploitation, but much more about Nazis. I think It’s not fair.

The Filling Station (KXFS) @ King’s Cross

初めてこのThe Filling Station (KXFS)を見かけたのは夜だった。グリーンの大きなネオンサインと赤くライトアップされたファイバーグラスの壁が、まだ再開発途上で何もないこのエリアからKXFSを浮かび上がらせている光景は、幻想的で、不思議とノスタルジックを感じさせた。

キングスクロス駅の北、York Way（ヨークウェイ）とRegent’s Canal（リージェンツ運河）が交わる場所にある、古いガソリンスタンドを改装したKXFSは、期間限定のレストラン＆イベントスペース。約2年後、この建物は再開発の一環で、住宅に生まれ変わるらしい。 →KXFSの詳細

KXFSは今年5月にオープン。中には、ハックニーにあるトレンディなレストラン・Bistrotheque（ビストロテーク）経営者の手による「Calexican（カリフォルニアの健康オタクが好む食材とメキシコ料理が融合した造語）」レストランのShrimpy’s（シュリンピーズ）と、6月〜9月限定営業の屋外バー（KXFS forecourt bar）がある。Shrimpy’sで食事したことはないけれど、9月末で営業が終了する前に、KXFS forecourt barのピッツァを是非紹介したいと思い、このブログを書いている。ここのピッツァは、イースト・ロンドンの幾つかのウィークエンド・マーケットに出店している、Home Slice Pizzaが作っている。メニューは週変わりの3種類のピッツァ（丸ごと£9.00 / スライス£3.00）しかない。飲み物はアルコールのみ、水道水の他はミネラルウォーターもコーヒーもない。支払いは何故かクレジットカードオンリーで、現金不可。スタッフは無愛想だし、全般的にサービスがいいとは言えないんだけれど、それでもここのピッツァ・マルゲリータは食べる価値あり。

The first time I saw The Filling Station (KXFS) was at night. With the light green large neon sign and fibreglass screen lit up in red, it stood out in the dark redevelopment area on construction, next to the Regent’s Canal in the north of King’s Cross station. It was beautiful and I felt nostalgic somehow.

KXFS, converted from old gas station adjacent to York Way and the Regent’s Canal, is a temporary restaurant and event space. It is said that this structure will remain for two years before the site is redeveloped for housing. →more details of KXFS

Opened in late May, KXFS houses cozy ‘Calexican‘ restaurant Shrimpy’s, created by people behind Bistrotheque in Hackney, as well as al-fresco KXFS forecourt bar which opens  from June until the end of September. I haven’t tried Shrimpy’s, but I wanted to tell how surprisingly good pizza at KXFS forecourt bar is, before the bar close down. The pizza is prepared by Home Slice Pizza who sells pizza on some weekend markets in East London. They have only 3 kinds of pizza (£9.00@whole / £3.00@slice). Topping changes each week) at KXFS. Overall service is not really great: they oddly accept only card and no cash (so as Shrimpy’s); they have only alcoholic drinks except tap water; and staffs were not really friendly. Shoreditch（ショーディッチ）・Curtain Roadにあるアメリカンスタイル・ダイナー、その名も「THE DINER」。Shoreditch以外に、SOHO、Angel、Camden、Kensal Riseにも店がある。50年代風インテリアに、ロックが流れる店内では、典型的なアメリカン・カジュアルフードが食べられる。昔からハンバーガーやホットドッグが好物だった私は、今でも時々「ハンバーガー食べたい」衝動に駆られる。健康オタクのMは今は「ヘルシー」バーガーにしか行かないが、私はジャンクで脂ぎったハンバーガーの方が本当は好みだ。アメリカにいた頃は、よくバーガーキングのWhoper（ワッパー）を頬張っていたが、さすがに最近は自分の歳を考えて、大手チェーン系不健康ハンバーガーは控えている。このTHE DINERのは、私の好きな脂ぎったハンバーガーだったが、Mは脂っぽすぎてあんまり好きじゃない、と言う。私はハンバーガーはおいしいと思ったけど、ホットドッグは×（バツ）。ソーセージもパンもふにゃふにゃ、手に持って食べていたら崩れてきた。グリルしたオニオンは甘くて美味しかったけど、たくさん入れ過ぎ。一口食べる毎にボロボロとこぼれ落ちる。でもTime Outのお薦めは、パンケーキやオムレツ等のall-day breakfast類だそう。Angelにも最近新しく出来たので、今度試してみよう。でも、Time Outのレストラン評にはずいぶん裏切られているから、ちょっと半信半疑だけれど。

THE DINER on Curtain Road in Shoureditch is an old-school American style diner. Other than Shoreditch, there have diners in SOHO, Angel, Camden and Kensal Rise as well. In THE DINER, decorated in 50’s style and playing Rock’n Roll loud, you can find typical American comfort foods on their menu. I’ve been a big fun of a hamburger and a hotdog since I was child, and still have an craze for hamburger sometimes. Health fanatic M eats only ‘healthy’ burger, but I prefer a junk and fatty burger. I went to Burger King regularly and crammed Whoper into my mouth when I was in US, but now considering my age, I try to avoid ‘unhealthy’ big burger chains. Hamburgers at THE DINER was the kind I like, greasy and juicy, but M didn’t like it because of its greasiness. I like their burger, but their hotdog was ‘F’. Sausage and the bun was too soft and the bun collapsed in my hand. Grilled onions was sweet and tender, but there were too much of them and fell down at every bite. The Time Out recommended their all-day breakfast, like pancakes or omelette – I can give a try at the newly opened diner in Angel. But I am not sure if I can trust Time Out restaurant reviews, as we had many disappointments from the places they recommended in the past…
