Olympic Women’s Football Semi Final & Final @ Wembley Stadium

ロンドン・オリンピックが終わってしまった。イギリスの誇る歴代の大物歌手たちが登場した昨夜の閉会式は、ミュージック・フェスティバルか、日本で言うと紅白歌合戦特別版といった趣の、スポーツとはあまり関係のない演出だったけれど、懐メロから最新ヒット曲まで一挙に聞けて、イギリス人はかなり盛り上がったようだ。私達はというと、好みじゃない音楽を3時間も聞かされ飽き飽きしてしまったけれど。

期間中はテレビ、アプリ、ウェブを駆使してつぶさに結果をチェックしていたので、オリンピックが終わった今、大きな空虚感を感じる。一介の観客でさえそうなのだから、参加選手たちが燃え尽き症候群に陥ってしまう気持ちがよく分かる。

London Olympic is over. Last night’s closing ceremony was nothing much to do with sports but more like Diamond Jubilee Concert, but British seem to have fascinated to watch generations of big names singing old classics to latest hits, though we got a bit bored listening to the music I’d never heard and in fact those musics were not my cup of tea. Also I didn’t understand “Monty Python” part as I’ve never seen it, and I believe I am not the only one in the world.

I was into following the olympic games everyday on TV, web and Olympic apps, and now I feel empty. I am just an audience, but I completely understand some Olympic athletes experience burn-out syndrome after the Games.

時間は逆のぼるが、日本全国の期待を集めたなでしこが、プレッシャーにも負けず大活躍、決勝まで勝ち上がった。まだどのチームが勝ち上がるかも分からない次点で、願掛けも兼ねて買っておいたウェンブリー・スタジアムでの準決勝・決勝戦のチケットが無駄にならなかった。ちなみに準決勝のチケット代は最高Aクラスで1枚60ポンド、決勝は最高Aクラスで1枚125ポンド也。

This is retrospective story, but I want to share my experience in women’s football semi-final and final at London’s Wembley Stadium, after the quarter final in Cardiff. I bought those tickets before knowing who would play, hoping that Japanese team (aka Nadeshiko Japan) would go through. Since the historic victory against USA at last year’s Women’s World Cup, Nadeshiko Japan had been burdened with so much expectation and pressure from Japanese people (like Jessica Ennis for British), and they met their expectation. My tickets were not wasted after all – I paid £60 for semi-final and £125 for final for both A class tickets, and it was well worth it!

キャパシティ9万人でヨーロッパ第二位の大きさを誇り、サッカーの聖地とも呼ばれるウェンブリー・スタジアムでの準決勝の相手はフランス。ウェンブリー・パーク駅から続々と観客が集まってくる。

The semi-final was Japan vs France at the Europe’s second biggest Wembley Stadium with massive 90,000 capacity. People after people were coming toward the stadium from nearby Wembley Park station.

入口では、男女別にセキュリティチェックがある。通常、サッカーの試合は男性が多いのだけれど、さすがに女子サッカーなので女性が多数派。15分ほど並んでようやく通過。

There were separate search lanes for men and women. Normally majority of the football audience is men, but this time there were more women than men. I took about 15 minutes to go through the gate.

両国の国家斉唱。夕方5時スタートと時間が早いせいか、左右ゴール裏はほぼ空席、東京オリンピック誘致の垂れ幕がちゃっかり陣取る。奥のサイド席も空席が目立つ。

The time for national anthems of both countries before the game. Big chunk of seats were unoccupied, probably because the game started at 5pm and not many 9-5 working people couldn’t attend. You can see a banner “Tokyo 2020“, hold up by Japanese Olympic Committee gangs?

この日の観客数はなんと6万1482人。

Attendance of the match was 62,482. Wow!

最後はフランスの猛反撃にさらされながらも、2対1でなでしこが勝利。決勝進出を決める。

Nadeshiko Japan won 2-1, despite of fierce attack by France on the second half. Well done, girls!

いよいよ決勝戦。夜7時45分スタートで会社帰りの人も来られることもあり、準決勝より混雑している。

The final started at 19:45 and there were much more people coming than the semi final.

アメリカ国旗に身を包み、勝つ気満々のアメリカ人が目立つ。日本人サポーター、ちょっと気迫負け。。。

Americans, wrapped themselves with Stars and Stripes, were all pumped up and cheering everywhere, while Japanese supporters were quieter and less visible…

準決勝時と比べ、高級感漂うClub Wembleyレベル2。シャンパン・バーや座席サービスのレストランも。観覧席もクッション付きで、座り心地もベター。

In compared to Level 1 at the semi-final, Club Wembley level 2 area was more upscale, with a table service restaurant and a champaign bar. The padded seat here was more comfortable than Level 1 seat.

観客がパネルを掲げて「London 2012」を表示。昨年W杯来の日米因縁の対決とあって、女子サッカーとしては過去最高の観客数8万203人を記録。私の日本人の知り合いの80％（主観ですが）が来場、総数5万人と言われる在英日本人が勢揃いしたかと思うほど、多くの日本人が観戦した。

Audience put up the panels to show “London 2012”. The attendance of the match was massive 80,203, the record highest as a women’s football match. About 80% of my Japanese friends got the tickets, and there were so many Japanese in the stadium as if all 50,000 Japanese who live in UK came to the stadium.

2−0と先行され、健闘虚しく2−1で敗れる。試合後、アメリカのカーリ・ロイド選手さえ「アメリカがペナルティを取られなかったのはとてもラッキーだった」と認めているように、レフェリーがペナルティエリアでのアメリカ側のハンドを取らなかったことが悔しい。結果は同じだったとしても、勝利のチャンスはあったかもしれないと言うのが、ファンの正直な思い。アメリカは準決勝のカナダ戦でも、3−2でリードされている時に、カナダのゴールキーパーがボールを規定時間以上持っていたとしてフリーキックを与えられたり、カナダ側のハンドとして賛否両論のペナルティキックが与えられたりして、延長戦で勝利した（英語版Wikipedia）。なんとラッキーな（ちょっと嫌み）！でも、どうせ判定は変わらないのだし、カナダ選手達のようにはっきり文句を言うのではなく（このことでFIFAより懲罰を受けるかも）、レフェリーの判断を尊重したなでしこは賢明か。

表彰式では、人種差別容認発言やFIFA理事の不正疑惑で悪評高いFIFAのゼップ・ブラッター会長に大きなブーイング。そもそもこの日のことも、ゴール判定技術やビデオ判定などに消極的なFIFAの責任なのだ。ブーイングも当然。

Nadeshiko Japan lost 2-1, despite of their continuous attacks during the game. As a Japanese supporter, I was quite upset that the German referee didn’t give a penalty to USA for the handball in the penalty area made by Tobin Heath, although it might haven’t affected the result. In fact, replays showed a clear handball, and even Carli Lloyd admitted  in post-match interviews that the USA were very lucky to go unpenalized. There was also another controversy about what happened during the semi-final, favouring to US against Canada. Lucky you, Americans! (see details on Wikipedia) But Japanese players were wiser just accept the referee’s judgement, in compare to Canadians who raised their doubts against referee, which risk them a disciplinary action by FIFA. And at the end, the result won’t change anyway. But I feel very sorry for Canadians.

There was big booing against unpopular president of FIFA, Sepp Blatter who attended the medal ceremony. At the end of the day, everything is FIFA’s fault refusing to introduce technological assistance such as  goal-line technology or video replays to avoid misjudgement, for some strange reasons.

試合直後は涙に暮れた彼女たちも、表彰式では晴れ晴れとした素敵な笑顔。スコア上では負けたけれど、試合内容は互角かそれ以上。強い団結力と勝利への思い、小さい体でデッカいアメリカ人選手たちと戦う姿は、見る者皆に勇気と感動を与えてくれた。最高のオリンピック経験をさせてくれてありがとう！

After lots of tears, the girls showed us great smiles at the medal ceremony. Although they lost, the game was neck and neck or they played even better, for my eyes. Great teamwork and determination. Small Japanese players who played with big Americans gave all Japanese the courage and power. Thank you for such a wonderful Olympic experience to us!!

。。。とここまでは良かったけれど、準決勝も決勝も、試合の後が悪夢。何万人と言う人波が最寄りのWembley Park（ウェンブリー・パーク）駅に押し寄せ、身動きできない。しかも準決勝の日は、信号機の異常かなんかで（よくあることだが）メトロポリタン線に遅れが出た。駅への沿道はフェンスでブロックされているので、列を抜け出すことも出来ない。決勝戦の後、通常45分ほどの道程を、2時間かけて夜1時にやっと家に帰り着いた。楽しかったけれど、疲れた。。。

But this is not the end of the story – coming back home was a true nightmare for both days. Tens of thousands of people rushing to the station stuck and couldn’t move for a while. Metropolitan line had problem of signal failure after the semi final, which often happens here in London. The path to the station was blocked on the sides and couldn’t escape once you went inside. It took two hours to go back home after the final which normally takes only 45-minutes, and it was 1 am when I finally reached home. The game was exciting, but it was exhausting as well…

‘Boris Bikes’ Barclays Cycle Hire Starts Today

自身も自転車乗りである、ボリス・ジョンソン市長肝煎りの公共自転車レンタルシステム、「Barclays Cycle Hire」（市長の名前をとって、「Boris Bikes」とも呼ばれる）が今日から始まった。当初の計画では、セントラル・ロンドンに敷設された400のDocking Station（駐輪場）に、6000台の自転車が備え付けられる予定だったが、今日朝6時付で、315のDocking Stationに、4700台の自転車が用意された。

現在は、ウェブサイトよりユーザー登録し、郵便で届くelectronic key（専用の鍵。費用は£3）を受け取った人たちのみ使用可。私も早速昨日登録して、鍵が届くのを待っているところ。鍵を受け取ったら、ウェブサイトで自分のアカウントにログインし、有効化しないと使えない。登録していない利用者は、来月8月末から使用できるようになるそうだ。使用に当たっては、アクセス料が1日£1／週£5／年£45、それに加えて使用料がかかる。最初の30分は無料、その後は1時間£1、90分£4、2時間£6と、使用した時間分が登録したクレジット・カードにチャージされる（詳細はここで）。手間がかかっても安くあげたいという人は、30分毎に駐輪場に返して、再度借り直せば（同じ自転車なら返却してから5分待つか、他の自転車ならすぐ借りられる）、何時間でも無料で使える。もしその駐輪場が一杯なら、タッチスクリーンで近くの駐輪場を探して返却すると、15分間無料で延長できる。もし24時間以内に返却しなければ£150、全く返却できなければ£300課金されるので、気をつけて。故障した場合は、スパナのシンボルのボタンを押すと、修理に来てくれる。

自転車、駐輪システムはカナダ製で、モントリオール市で使用されているレンタル自転車、Bixiと同じもの。車体には、2500万ポンドを寄付したスポンサー、バークレイズ銀行の青いロゴがついている。壊れにくくて、乗り心地重視、レンタル用コンピュータ・システムを搭載した車体は重く、それほどスピードが出ない。タイヤの細いツーリング用の自転車で疾走し、赤信号は無視、歩行者を蹴散らし、車の流れも気にせず割り込み、自分がいち早く目的地に着くことだけが最優先の自分勝手な「Fanatics（熱狂的な人たち）」（と私たちが呼んでいる）には物足りないらしいが、それで結構。こういう鬱陶しい人たちにガンガン飛ばされたら危なくて仕方がない。

以前も書いたように、セントラル・ロンドンには、安全に自転車が乗れる自転車レーンが整備されていないし、ヨーロッパ、アメリカはもちろん、世界の大半を占める右側通行ではなく、イギリスは左側通行。同じ左側通行の日本人はいいが、不慣れな観光客まで自転車に乗りだすと、危ないんではないかと少々心配。また同様のサービスであるパリのヴェリブにおいて、自転車の盗難・破壊が相次いでいることから、費用の税金負担増を危惧する声もある。さて、このシステム、ロンドンにとって丁と出るか、半と出るか？

A new public bicycle sharing scheme Barclays Cycle Hire (aka “Boris Bikes”), propelled by Mayor Boris Johnson (who is a cyclist himself), launches today in London. At 6am, 4,700 bikes were in place in 315 docking stations across central London, while the total fell short of a promised 6,000 bikes at 400 docking stations.

Currently only registered users who have signed up on TfL’s website and received an electronic key (£3) in the post can use “Boris Bikes”, but unregistered users will be able to use it from the end of next month. I just registered last night and am waiting for the key to arrive. Once it arrives, you have to activate it online by logging in your account. In order to use the bikes, you have to pay “access fee” for £1@day / £5@week / £45@year, plus “usage charge” after first free 30 minutes for £1@hour, £4@90 mins, and £6@2 hours and so on (see details), which will be charged to your credit card. But you can use the bike for free for as much as you want, if you return it every 30 minutes and hire a new bike or the same one again after you re-dock for 5 minutes. If all the docking points are taken, you can get an extra free 15 minutes by using the touchscreen display on their nearest terminal, before you find another station. Be careful, you will be charged £150 for not returning a bike for 24 hours or £300 for not returning it at all. If the bike is broken, press the button with the spanner symbol when you return it – a mechanic will come to repair it.

The bicycles and the docking stations are built in Canada and are based on Montreal’s bicycle rental system Bixi. On the body of the bikes, you can see the blue logo of sponsor Barclays which donated £25 million to the scheme. The comfort-oriented and vandal resistant body equipped with computer system is quite heavy, and some cyclists claim that they can’t go fast. But it is totally fine for me, or I don’t want those selfish irritated ‘fanatics’ to use these beautiful bikes. These obnoxious cyclists pedal like crazy, passing a red-light, ringing the bell and kicking out pedestrians on their way, going around in between the cars, and jumping in front of the traffics like buzzing flies around a face, causing a slow traffics – the only thing they care is to get their destination as soon as possible. Very annoying!

As I wrote in the past entry, the London’s cycle lanes are still not good and safe, and doesn’t connect throughout central London. Also UK uses left-hand traffic which is a minor system in the world, and most of the tourists including Europeans and Americans who are not used to the traffic system may put themselves in danger. Also similar Paris’s Vélib’ has suffered vandalism and theft, and many people are anxious that the same things happen to Barclays Cycle Hire as well and cost taxpayers a fortune.

The scheme has just started, and let’ see how it goes.

Anvil! The Story of Anvil

８０年代にデビューした、カナダのヘビー･メタル・バンド「Anvil（アンヴィル）」のインディー系ドキュメンタリー映画、「Anvil! The Story of Anvil（アンヴィル！　夢を諦めきれない男たち）」を見た。私がヘビーメタルファンだからではない。１０代の頃、ヘビーメタルはとても人気だったが（歳がばれますが）、私はマドンナやデュラン・デュラン、ビリー・ジョエル等が好きで、ぼさぼさロン毛、タイトジーンズまたはレザーパンツのメタル系は敬遠していた（今でもそうだが）。でもこの映画は、イギリスのメディアのレビューで軒並み評判がよく、主な日刊紙の評価は、The Timesが５つ星、The Daily Telegraph、The Guardian、The Independentは４つ星。辛口批評の多いイギリスメディアの評価が上々、ということはとても良い映画なのだろうと思ったのだ。結果は、やっぱり久々に見る良い映画だった。

アンヴィルの結成からのメンバー、Steve ‘Lips’ Kudlow（ボーカル）とRobb Reiner（ドラム）は、カナダ・トロント出身で１０代の頃からの親友。８０年代にちょっと活躍したもののその後は落ちぶれ、５０代となった二人は、家族の生活のためにリップスは子供の給食配達、ロブは大工をしながら、今もロックスターとしての成功を夢見て、細々と音楽活動を続けている。久々の大仕事、ヨーロッパ・ツアーはトラブルの連続、人の入りも少なかったが、それでもめげない２人は、リップスのお姉さんから借金をしてまで、イギリスのプロデューサーのもとでアルバムを制作。デモテープをレコード会社に送るが、なしのつぶて。そんな中、アルバムを聴いたという日本人プロモーターから、幕張メッセでのロックフェスティバル参加の誘いがある。日本は、かつてアンヴィルがボン・ジョビらと共に「スーパー･ロック’８４・イン・ジャパン」の熱狂のステージに立った、思い出の土地。しかし、彼らはフェスティバルの１番手、ヨーロッパでの失望から、人の入りが悪かったらどうしようと不安になるのだが、ふたを開けると、たくさんの観客に迎えられる、という感動のストーリー。

いろいろな困難を経験しつつも、常にポジティブで前向きに（特にリップス）、３０年近くの長い間、夢を追い続ける生き様。ヘビー・メタルへの情熱。喧嘩しつつも支え合う、二人の友情。そんな二人を少々呆れつつも暖かく見守る家族。笑いあり涙あり、観るものに勇気と希望を与えてくれる映画だ。ミッキー・ロークが主演する「The Wrestler（レスラー）」も、歳をとっても夢を捨てない男の生き様を描いている（女はもっと現実的。全てを犠牲にしてまで夢は追わない）という点で似ている。「レスラー」の方は、もっと悲壮感漂うが、「レスラー」が好きな方は、きっとこの映画を気に入る事と思う。

この映画の後、アンヴィルはまた注目を浴つつあるそうだ。４月にはカナダ、アメリカで映画が公開される。残念ながら私の好みの音楽ではないからCDは買わないけれど、二人の成功を深く願っている。

We saw a indie documentary ‘Anvil! The Story of Anvil‘, about the 80’s Canadian Heavy Metal band, ‘Anvil’. Not because I am a fan of them or heavy metal. Heavy metal was very popular when I was a teenager (now you can assume my age), but I prefer Madonna, Duran Duran or Billy Joel etc. and avoided (and still do now) metals with lousy long hair with tight jeans or leather pants. However, we decided to see this movie because mainstream British media all gave good reviews – 5 stars by The Times, 4 stars by, The Daily Telegraph, The Guardian, and The Independent. If these British strict film critiques like it, we thought that this movie should be good, and it really was.

The members from the beginning, Steve ‘Lips’ Kudlow (vocal) and Robb Reiner (drum), are from Toronto and friends from teenagers. After a moment under spotlight in 80s and then being forgotten, Lips and Robb are now in their 50s still dream of success as musicians but have to work as delivery driver for children’s school meals and a carpenter for their family living. A big tour in a long time ended up miserable with all kinds of obstacles and with fewer audiences than they expected. Then they took a risk to borrow money from Lips’ sister and ask a British producer who produced Black Sabbath to help them make a new album. However, no record label interested in ‘outdated old rockers’. One day they got a phone call from Japanese promoter who heard their new music and they were invited for a rock festival in Japan. Japan is the memorable place for them – they played at ‘Super Rock ’84 in Japan’ along with Bon Jovi, Scorpions, and Whitesnake. They were the first group to play in the festival and were anxious if there were not many people – like in the European tour. The result was moving and happy ending – they were greeted by excited big crowds, like in 80’s.

Their ultra positive attitudes (especially Lips) against all the hardships, their passion towards heavy metal and never giving up their dream of success for almost 30 years, their friendships and their family support – this is a ‘feeling good’ movie to give us a hope, perhaps more than award winning ‘Slumdog Millionaire’. The movie is pretty similar to ‘The Wrestler‘ – both portraying middle age men who don’t give up their dream (women are more realistic, I am afraid) – though ‘Anvil!’ is more optimistic. If you like ‘The Wrestler’, you may like ‘Anvil!’ as well.

After the movie was made, Anvil is getting more attention what they are always hoping for. ‘Anvil! The story of Anvil’ will be shown in Canada and US in April. Unfortunately I don’t buy their CD as this is not my cup of tea, but I really hope for their future success they really deserve to.
