Flatplanet @ Great Marlborough Street, off Carnaby Street

Carnaby Streetの北側、Great Marlborough StreetにあるFlatplanet。「ヘルシーなファストフード」を標榜、イギリス産有機栽培のスペルト小麦を使ったFlatbread（ピタやナンのような平パン）に、チョリソ、モッツアレラチーズ、パンチェッタ、モロッコ風チキンなど地中海風トッピングをのせた、ピザのような食べ物が売り物。オーナーは、同じくヘルシー系ファストフードチェーン・Leonを立ち上げた人物。なるほど、店の健康志向コンセプトから、レトロで洒落たインテリアまでLeonとそっくり。私は、野菜と穀物をたっぷり使ったLeonのフードは、肉系の具の味を隠してしまって野菜の味しかしないので、肉好きの私には「健康的」過ぎて好きじゃない。それに比べ、Flatplanetのフラットブレッドは、パン自体はちょっともそもそしているけれど、具はフレッシュで美味しい。フラットブレッドの写真は撮りたてほやほやだけれど、店内の写真はかなり前に撮ったものなので、若干変わっているかもしれないのでご容赦を。

Flatplanet on Great Marlborough Street (just off Carnaby Street), is a fast food restaurant that offers a range of organic English spelt flatbreads with a variety of toppings inspired by mediterranean cuisine such as chorizo, mozzarella, pancetta and Moroccan chicken. The founder of Flatplanet is the same with Leon, another ‘healthy’ fast food chain. In fact, the two places look alike with their casual retro style interior as well as their ‘healthy fast food’ concept. I don’t fancy Leon’s food because they put too much vegetables and grains and I can’t taste my ‘meat’ – it is too ‘healthy’ for me. But Flatplanet’s flatbread was not bad – toppings were fresh & juicy, though spelt bread was rather dry. *A photo of flatbread is freshly taken, but I took the rest of photos quite a while ago, so it may have changed a bit.

Speakeasy Espresso & Brew Bar @ Lowndes Court, off Carnaby Street

昔、学生だった頃、友人とSpeak Easyというアメリカン・カフェによく通った。先日、カーナビー・ストリートを歩いていたら、横道に同名の店を発見。懐かしさと、「Espresso」という言葉につられて、このお店・Speakeasy Espresso & Brew Barに足を踏み入れた。

今年9月にオープンしたSpeakeasy Espresso & Brew Barは、セントラル・ロンドンのクオリティ・コーヒーショップのネットワークであるCoffeesmiths Collectiveのメンバーで、1階は新鮮な手作りサンドイッチやケーキがカウンターに並ぶエスプレッソ・バー、地下はBrew Bar（brew＝コーヒーを淹れる）になっている。Brew Barでは、訓練を受けた知識豊富なバリスタが、ドリップコーヒーやサイフォン、モカエキスプレスなど家庭用コーヒー器具を使って、お好みのコーヒーを淹れてくれる。Coffeesmithsによって焙煎されたエスプレッソ・ブレンドに加え、イギリスの有名焙煎業者（ロースター）から仕入れたコーヒー2種類が週代わりで登場。なんと、年に100種類以上の違ったコーヒーが味わえる計算だ。

コーヒーも食べ物も美味しいんだけれど、壁にかけられた絵だけがちょっとね。。。

When I was a student in Japan, I often met up with my friends at an American cafe called “Speak Easy.” I found the place with the same name the other day, when we were on Carnaby Street. I couldn’t resist to take a look at it, with a little bit of sentiment and the word “espresso” in its name.

Split over ground floor and basement, Speakeasy Espresso & Brew Bar is two coffee bars in one: espresso bar upstairs; and a Brew Bar downstairs, where you can enjoy any kind of coffee from filter to syphon and to other home coffee making equipments such as macchinetta, brewed by highly trained and knowledgeable baristas. Opened in September this year, Speakeasy is a part of Coffeesmiths Collective, which is a network of quality coffee shops in Central London. In addition to their espresso blend is roasted by Coffeesmiths, they have two new single estate coffee from some of the UK’s best roasters every week – which means that you can sample hundreds of different coffee each year. Other than quality coffee, they also serve freshly made sandwiches and salad as well as cakes.

Good coffee and good food, but I don’t like the painting hanging on the walls…

BT ArtBox: Celebrating A British Icon

英大手電気通信事業者・BTが主催、虐待やいじめ、両親の離婚などに悩む子供たちを電話相談を通じてサポートする慈善団体「ChildLine（チャイルドライン）」の設立25年を記念するパブリック・アート・エキシビション「BT ArtBox」が、現在ロンドンで開催中だ。このプロジェクトには、建築家のザハ・ハディッド、ファッション・デザイナーのジャイルズ・ディーコン（Giles Deacon）、ザンドラ・ローズ（Zandra Rhodes）、ジュリアン・マクドナルド（Julien Macdonald）、アーティストのロブ＆ニック・カーター（Rob and Nick Carter）、ライアン・カラナン（Ryan Callanan：写真最上）、マーティン・ウェア（Martyn Ware）、彫刻家のデヴィッド・マック（David Mach）、インテリアデザイナーのニナ・キャンベル（Nina Campbell）、ミュージシャンのニック・ローズ（デュラン・デュラン）、マキシム（ザ・プロディジー）などの著名クリエイターたちが参加。イギリスのアイコンの一つである赤い電話ボックスと同サイズのレプリカを使って創られた80以上のアート作品が、6月15日にトラファルガー広場に1日集結、その後6月18日から7月16日まで、コヴェントガーデンやセント・パンクラス駅、カーナビー・ストリート、ハイド・パーク、水族館のサメの水槽などといった、ロンドンの名所や街角に設置、通行人の目を楽しませている（ロケーション・マップ / 写真：Telegraph紙）。

展示終了後は、イーベイとサザビーズでオークションにかけられ、売上げはChildLineに寄付される予定（詳細）。ロンドンでは今までも、Black Dog Campaign、Big Egg Hunt、Elephant Paradeなど、同じような有名人参加のチャリティ・アート・プロジェクトがいくつも行われている。

BT ArtBox is a public art exhibition, celebrating 25 years of ChildLine, who has been helping vulnerable children since 1986. More than 80 full-size replicas of one of the British icons, the red telephone box, are redesigned into artworks by leading artists and designers, including architect Zaha Hadid; fashion designers Giles Deacon, Zandra Rhodes and Julien Macdonald; artists Rob and Nick Carter, Ryan Callanan and Martyn Ware; sculptor David Mach; interior designer Nina Campbell; Duran Duran’s Nick Rhodes and The Prodigy’s Maxim (more photos: Telegraph).

The project launched on June 15 when a selection of BT ArtBoxes were on display in Trafalgar Square for the day. From June 18 to July 16, BT ArtBoxes are showcased across London’s streets and landmark locations, such as Covent Garden, St Pancras Station, Carnaby Street, Hyde Park and even the shark tank at the London Aquarium (location map). Then, all the boxes will be auctioned off through eBay and Sotheby’s to raise money for ChildLine’s 25th anniversary (more info). London has hosted similar charity art projects helped by celebrities and creators every now and then, such as the Black Dog Campaign, the Big Egg Hunt, and the Elephant Parade.

Canela Brazilian / Portuguese Café / Bar @ Covent Garden

コベントガーデンに程近い、Upper Saint Martin’s Lane中程にあるラウンドアバウト近くにある、ポルトガル／ブラジリアン・カフェ／バー、Canela（カネラ）。このコヴェント・ガーデン店の他、カーナビー・ストリートにもお店がある。

黒木のインテリアでまとめられた小さな店内はシックでカジュアル、アットホームな感じで居心地がいい。フード類は、黒豆と肉を煮込んだシチューをご飯にをかけた、国民食とも言えるFeijoada（フェジョアーダ）やPão de queijo（ポン・デ・ケイジョ、チーズパン）、チョリソなどと言ったポルトガル料理や、サンドイッチ、サラダなど。デザートは、今やロンドンのいろんなカフェで見かけるPastel de Nata（パステル・デ・ナタ）のほか、CanelaならではのBrigadeiro（ブラジルのチョコレート・ボール）、Quindim（キンジン）など、ちょっと変わったものもいただける。

Canela is a Brazilian / Portuguese Café / Bar near a roundabout on Upper Saint Martin’s Lane in Covent Garden. They also have a branch near Carnaby Street as well.

Ccasual-chic interior of the café, decorated with black wooden tables and wine shelves, is cozy and you’ll feel comfortable like at home. Their Portuguese/Brazilian-inspired food ranges from the national dish Feijoada (a stew of beans with meats, served with rice), chorizo, and Pão de queijo (cheese breads), to more ordinary sandwiches and salads etc. On their desert menu, you find Pastel de Nata (custard tarts), now quite popular throughout London, or more rare Brazilian sweets such as Brigadeiro (chocolate balls) and Quindim.

温めてクリームをかけていただく、Banana cinnamon cake（バナナとシナモンのケーキ）に、Galão（ガラォン、ポルトガル風グラス入りカフェオレ）を注文。エスポレッソにシナモンスティックがついてくるのが、Canela風。でもブラジル人のウェイトレスのお姉さんにケーキの注文を忘れられていて、せっかくのコーヒーが冷めてしまったのが残念。

We ordered warm Banana cinnamon cake is served with cream and cinnamon powder, espresso, served with cinnamon stick, and Portuguese style caffè latte Galão. It was a shame that a Brazilian waitress forgot my cake and Galão got cold while I was waiting…

Carnaby Street 50th Anniversary

2010年は、カーナビー・ストリート（Carnaby Street）の50周年記念の年。60年代に、モッズやヒッピー・ファッションの中心地であったカーナビー・ストリートに、独立系のブティックやデザイナーたちが店を構え、また周辺の通りには、様々なアングラのミュージック・バーがあった。Wardour Streetの角にあった伝説的なクラブ・Marquee Clubでは、ビートルズやザ・フー、ローリング・ストーンズなどが演奏し、彼らがたむろしたカーナビー・ストリートは、スウィンギング・ロンドンで、もっともクールな場所になった。

今もカーナビー・ストリートは、ロンドンの代表的なショッピング・ストリートの一つで、いつも観光客や若者で賑わっている。メイン・ストリートであるカーナービー・ストリートや周辺の小さな通り、Kingly court（キングリー・コート）、Newburgh Quarter（ニューバーグ・クォーター）など一帯には、ファッションや靴などのショップなどのほか、カフェやバー、パブ、レストランが並ぶ。

50周年を記念し、2010年は1年を通して、ファッションやデザイン、音楽に関連したイベントやフェスティバルが行われる予定。写真は、2月から開催されている展覧会で、カーナビー・ストリートの16世紀から現在までの歴史、特に60年代を中心に解説している。空き店舗を利用したと思われるこの展覧会は、ちょっと薄暗〜い感じで展示品のサイズも小さく、スペースを有効利用できてない感じ。写真もファッションも、もっとたくさん展示してほしかった。でも奥の左にあるブースでやっている、カーナビー・ストリートの歴史のビデオはなかなか面白い。

Year 2010 is Carnaby Street‘s 50th Anniversary. By the 1960s, Carnaby Street became an iconic fashion destination for he Mod and hippie styles. Many independent fashion boutiques and designers were located as well as various underground music bars in the surrounding streets. With bands such as The Beatles, The Who, and Rolling Stones appeared in the area to work with the legendary Marquee Club located round the corner in Wardour Street, and shopped and socialized, it became one of Swinging London‘s coolest destination.

Today Carnaby Street is still one of the main shopping street in London and attracts many young people and tourists. The area including main Carnaby Street and surrounding streets as well as Kingly court and the Newburgh Quarter, offers fashion stores and boutiques as well as cafés, bars, pubs and restaurants.

Throughout 2010, Carnaby streets will host various events and festivals featuring fashion, design and music. Kicking off in February with an exhibition which includes a detailed history of the area, from the 16th Century to the present day, especially focusing on the sixties. This exhibition, using an empty store space, is a bit dark and the materials exhibited are rather too small. There is a big unused space in the middle and I wish they can show us more its iconic fashions and photos. However, I quite enjoyed the video being played on the back, showing the history of the street, especially during the hype in 60’s.
