A Life of an Average British Family

住宅、結婚、仕事、宗教をメインに調査する政府の国勢調査とはまた別の角度から、現代の平均的なイギリス人家庭を描き出した調査が今日発表された。2000家族を対象に聞き取り調査した結果は以下の通り（テレグラフ紙記事より抜粋）。カッコ内は私の日常生活や、結果について思ったこと。子供がいないせいもあるけれど、全然イギリスの平均的な生活をしていないことを実感。

An ‘alternative census’ of British family life, interviewing 2,000 families, is published today. The government’s census shows us statistics on housing, marriage, work and religion, but this research shows us more down-to-earth modern life of average family in Britain. Here are the results of the research (Telegraph article), and in the parenthesis () is my everyday life and what I think about it – I realize that I am not really a typical British, probably because we don’t have any kids.

平均的な一日／Average Day Schedule

• 起床：6.57am（私は恥ずかしながら、もっと後。。。）
• 家族と一緒の朝ご飯：週2回（ほぼ毎日）
• 仕事からの帰宅時間：5.15pm（え、残業なし＋5時終業後15分で家に帰れるってこと？！日本じゃ普通無理だよね。。。）
• 夕食：5.50pm、平均週3回家族と一緒（私はその頃つまみ食いタイム。夕食6時前ってなんぼなんでも早過ぎ）
• テレビ鑑賞：1日9時間（ちょっと長過ぎない？こんなに見てたら、何にも出来ないよー）
• 就寝：10.39pm（私はまだまだ活動中）

• Wake up: 6.57am (me: much later, embarrassed to say…)
• Breakfast meals together : twice a week
• Get home from work: 5.15pm (They don’t have to work overtime + can come back in 15 minutes?! Japanese would envy you!)
• Dinner together at 5.50pm, 3 nights a week (me: much later – 6pm is my snack time)
• Watch TV: 9 hours a day (me: much less. People spend most of their spare time watching TV?!)
• Go to bed: 10.39pm (me: much later. I am still very active at the time)

アクティビティ／Activities

• 洗濯：週平均5.3回洗濯機をまわす（私は2回。子供いないし）
• 家事：週平均4時間24分。西洋は家事平等と言うイメージがあるけれど、イギリスでも主に女性が担当。でも、光熱費節約の為に、家中のいらない電気を消したりするのは主にお父さん。（うちはMも大いに活躍。でも電源を切るのは私）
• 娯楽：テレビ。好きな番組はドクター・フー（SFは嫌いなので見たことなし。てっきりイーストエンダーズが一番人気と思ってた）
• エクササイズ：週2.5回（私もそれぐらい）
• 親密なひととき：週2時間（「Quality time」は一緒に時を過ごすと言う意味だと思うのだけれど、何か含みあり？）
• 口論：週1.6回（私はもっと、かな。。。）
• 友人と夜外出：月2回
• カップルで夜外出：数ヶ月に1回ぐらい（ヨーロッパ人は子供を置いて夫婦で外出、ってイメージがあったけどそうでもないよう）
• 家族で外出：月1回
• 親戚を含む家族の集まり：週1回
• ホリデー：10日間の国内旅行を年に2回（各安航空会社も多いし、スペインやフランスとか、海外ホリデーが多いと思ってた）

• Laundry: 5.3 loads per week (me: twice, as I don’t have kids)
• Houseworks: 4 hours & 24 minutes per week – mum does the majority, but dads were the most likely to go around turning off lights and standby switches worrying about utility bills
• Best entertainment: watching TV and favourite show: Dr Who – I have never seen it. I thought it must be East Enders, though I’ve never seen it either)
• Exercise: 2.5 times a week (me: around the same)
• Quality time together: 2 hours a week
• Arguments: 1.6 times a week (me: much, much more!)
• Nights out with friends: twice a month
• Nights out as a couple: ‘Every few months’ (Japanese believe that Europeans have a couple culture, leaving children at home and going out alone, but I guess it is a myth?)
• Big family outing: Once a month
• Wider family: Once a week gathering
• Holiday: 2 x 10 days in the UK (I thought British like go abroad for holiday such as Spain and France)

支出／Spending

• 食費：週£76.02（家族で一日約£10って、少なすぎる気が。。。）
• アルコール代：週£12（飲み助の多いイギリスでこんなに少ない？）
• 娯楽費（DVD、映画、ゲーム）：週£15

• お財布の中身：£10.31（どこでもクレジットカードが低額でも使えると言っても、こんな少額で出かけるのは不安）

• Weekly grocery shopping: £76.02 (About £10 a day? Sounds a bit too low for an entire family)

その他／Miscellaneous

• 話をするご近所さん：2人（ロンドンのフラットに住む私たちは、あまりご近所さんを見かけないし、名前も知らない。家持ちなら、2人は少し少ない気も）
• 80％の人が自分は「とても幸せ」または「幸せ」と解答（そりゃ素晴らしい。私もまあ幸せかな）。
• 70％の人たちが自分は「普通」と感じている（30％は普通じゃない？どういう訳だか是非聞いてみたい）

• Neighbours: Two that we speak to (me: none…I rarely see any neighbours in my building)
• 80% think that they are ‘happy’ or “very happy” (Good for them! I can say I am happy myself too)
• 70% claim they are ‘normal’ (It means that 30% are not normal? I would love to know why they think they are not)

調査によると、多くの家族は週のどの日に何を食べるかが決まっているそう。私はその日に冷蔵庫にあるものを食べるので、特に決まってない。

どうして人は同じものを同じ日に食べるんだろう？なぜ月曜日はスパゲッティ・ボロネーゼ？心理学者か社会学者に分析してみて欲しいところ。

The study also found that families are creatures of habit, and often eat the same meals every week (I don’t, I just cook anything in a fridge on the day);

• Monday: spaghetti bolognese

• Thursday: cottage pie
• Friday: Takeaway fish and chips

Very interesting to know why they do. Why spaghetti meat sauce on Monday?? I want a psychologist or sociologist to analyze the reason.

Census 2011: Questionnaire Arrived in Our Post

今日、私達の郵便ポストにCensus 2011（国勢調査）の調査票が届いた。イギリスでは、1801年以来、第二次世界大戦中の1941年を除いて、10年毎に国勢調査が行われている。仕事、健康、教育、人種などを尋ねる調査票は、3月27日か、それ以降ならなるべく早く記入して、送料無料の返信用封筒で返送。また、今回イギリス国勢調査史上初めて、オンラインでも記入可能となった。調査への参加は法律によって義務づけられており、違反すると£1000以下の罰金が科される。まあこれは建前で、前回調査票の記入を怠ったとされる約300万人のうち、処罰を受けたのはたった38人だったそうだ。イングランドとウェールズの2600万世帯は同じ調査票を使うが、北アイルランドとスコットランドは独自に調査を行う。調査結果は、イギリスまたはEUが、地方自治体の公共サービスを計算する際に使われるという。

今回、英語のできない移民のために3万人のスタッフが雇われたとされ、約5億ポンドにも上る調査費用に批判も出ている（Daily Telegraph 記事）。前回2001年に比べ、350万人の人口増加が見込まれ、その増加分の3分の2が移民によるものだそうだ。32ページの調査票は56言語に翻訳され、移民のためのテレビ局での公共広告、お店や宗教施設で配布されるパンフレットにも、多額の税金が費やされる。移民に寛大なのはいいけれど、学習が困難な一部は別として、移民も基本的な英語ぐらいは理解できないと、と自分も外国人として思う。社会のお荷物と思われ、世間の風当たりが強くなって、嫌な思いをするのは彼らなんだから。

We found an envelope enclosing Census 2011 form in our post today. UK census takes place once every 10 years since 1801, with the exception of 1941 during the World War II. Questions include jobs, health, education and ethnic background, and the questionnaire must be completed on 27 March 2011, or as soon as possible afterwards. For the first time, you can fill in online as well as on paper which must be posted. Every household  is required to respond by law, and there is a fine of up to £1,000 for failing to complete and return the form, theoretically – only 38 people were prosecuted, among 3 million people failed to complete on census 2001. 26 million households in England and Wales file the same form, while Northern Ireland and Scotland run separate censuses. The results of the census will be used in calculation of regional and local public service, by governments in the UK and EU.

The government is criticized about its high cost, which is expected to reach almost £500 million, as 30,000 staffs are hired to help immigrants who don’t speak English to take part in the census, as well as inflation (Daily Telegraph article). There will be an estimated 3.5 million more people to count in this census, largely as a result of immigration and two-thirds of the population growth has come from direct or indirect migration. The 32-page form is translated into 56 languages, while advertisements are being broadcast on ethnic minority TV channels and leaflets are distributed to shops and religious facilities. It is great that the government is so generous, but immigrants (except some with difficulty in learning) shouldn’t take advantage from tolerance of British, and try to learn basic English at least I believe, as a foreigner myself. Otherwise, they are the ones who are affected by a public backlash when they are perceived as a burden on a society.
