London Design Festival 2012 @ V&A

100% Designの後は、同じくLondon Design Festival（LDF）に参加しているヴィクトリア＆アルバート博物館へ。期間中（9月14日〜23日）、常設展・特別展の展示品に混じって、LDFのために特別に制作されたインスタレーションやディスプレイの数々が、館内あちこちに設置された（詳細：V&Aウェブサイト / 2011年ディスプレイ）。

LDF専用館内マップは、博物館スタッフさえ認める難解さで、悪戦苦闘しながら各ディスプレイを探し当てる。これらの作品は、テーマもなく統一感はないが、一番印象に残ったのは、日本のデザインオフィス「nendo」が手がけた、「Mimicry Chairs」という計11点の空間インスタレーション作品（写真下7点）。周囲の展示に呼応するように擬態化された透明感のある椅子が、エントランス空間や展示室、階段室、回廊など、館内11カ所に配置された。残念ながら展示品なので座れないが、それぞれ個性を持ったこれらの白い椅子たちは、違和感なく絶妙なハーモニーでその空間に収まっていた。

After 100% Design, I moved on to Victoria & Albert Museum which also participated in London Design Festival (LDF). During the LDF, V&A had housed an array of specially commissioned installations and displays throughout the Museum (details: V&A website / blog entry for the 2011 displays).

The special V&A map for LDF was hard to figure out, even to museum staffs, and it cost me a lot of effort to find an each work. There was no theme or direction for those displays, but what I liked the most was “Mimicry Chairs“, total of eleven installations using white transparent metal chairs, created by Japanese design firm “nendo“. The chairs were placed in the main entrance as well as ten other locations in the museum including galleries, staircases and corridors. Unfortunately, sitting on the chairs was not allowed, but those installations perfectly fit in an each space and created good harmony with surrounding artworks and objects.

「Bench Years」シリーズとして、各々違った材料を使ったベンチが、博物館の中庭・John Madjski Gardenに設置された。上の写真は、アメリカ製硬材を使った、Martino Gamperによるベンチ。

Heatherwick Studio: Designing the Extraordinary @ V&A

ヴィクトリア&アルバート博物館（V&A）で開催中の「Heatherwick Studio: Designing the Extraordinary」展（5月31日〜9月30日）は、ロンドンを拠点とするデザイン＆建築事務所Heatherwick Studio（ヘザーウィック・スタジオ）の初の大規模展。V&AのBritish design展の関連イベントで、オリンピック前後に開催される文化イベント・London 2012 Festivalの一環でもある。

Heatherwick Studioは、革新的技術と素材を用いた公共記念建造物や3次元作品で有名なイギリス人インダストリアル・デザイナー、Thomas Heatherwick（トーマス・ヘザーウィック）が1994年に設立した。かのサー・テレンス・コンランがヘザーウィックを「Leonardo da Vinci of our times（現代のレオナルド・ダ・ビンチ）」呼んだそうだが、ちょっとそれは大げさとしても、彼の作品は創造性に富み、見ていて楽しい。ただ展示室であるporter gallery（ポーター・ギャラリー）は狭すぎて、展示品は模型や写真が多いにしても、彼の作品の型破りなスケールが表現しきれていない気がする。

V&A’s “Heatherwick Studio: Designing the Extraordinary” (May 31 – September 30) is the first major solo exhibition of the work of Heatherwick Studio. It is a part of a season of events celebrating British design at the V&A and also the London 2012 Festival, a series of cultural events taken place around London Olympic 2012.

Heatherwick Studio is a London-based design and architecture studio, founded in 1994 by Thomas Heatherwick, who is an English industrial designer known for innovative use of engineering and materials in public monuments and sculptures. It is said that Sir Terence Conran called Heatherwick as the “Leonardo da Vinci of our times”. It is a bit of an exaggeration, but his works are creative and fun. The  porter gallery where the exhibition is taken place, is too small for his large scale works, even for its prototype and photos, and a bit claustrophobic.

ロンドン名物として親しまれたRoutemaster（ルートマスター）の特徴である、開放式後部プラットフォームを備えた新しい二階建てバス、「ニュー・バス・フォー・ロンドン」。現在数台が38番ルートを運行中。
