St. John Hotel & Restaurant @ Leicester Street

今年春に、チャイナタウンのど真ん中、ヒップなW Londonホテルの隣にオープンしたSt.John Hotel。スミスフィールド肉市場近くにある、ロンドン一美味しいイギリス料理店との誉れの高い、St. Johnの姉妹店だ。2009年にミシュラン一つ星に輝き、Restaurant magazineによる世界のTop 50レストラン・ランキング常連のSt. Johnは、「nose to tail eating」、内臓や豚の耳、足、しっぽ、骨髄、鴨の心臓など、あまり使われない部位を使用した伝統的イギリス料理で知られる、食通やセレブに人気のあるレストラン。家から近いので、様子見に本店に1度、スピタルフィールズにあるSt. John Bread & Wineに1度行ったことがある。本店では、レバーは苦手なのに、チャレンジ精神からトーストの上にレバーがのった一品をつい頼んでしまい、その臭みに少し閉口。St. John Bread & Wineでは、チキンのローストを頼んだら、丸ごとチキンを目の前にどん！と置かれ、肉を切り分けるのに苦労した。これらの経験に加え、モツや肉の珍部位にはあまり食指が動かないので、しばらく敬遠していたのだが、新しい支店は試しておかねばと、少し前に行ってみた。

内装は、3店に共通する、白黒をベースにダークウッドを使用した、シンプルで明るいインテリア。ただ、他2店に比べて狭い。夜10時という予約時間にも関わらず満席、隣のテーブルと距離が近すぎて、なんだか窮屈に感じる。来る前にアペタイザーをつまみながら飲んでいたので、この日は二人で、羊の舌とチコリの前菜（£8：写真下）とクレソンのサラダ（£5.50）、チキンパイ（2人分£32：写真下）と、軽めに注文。新鮮な材料に洗練された味付け、味も悪くないのだけれど、羊の舌の食感と独特の匂いはやっぱりちょっと苦手（牛タンは好きだけど）。そしてパイは二人分にしてもデカく途中飽きがくるので、一人分の大きさで、他にもう一品頼んでシェアしたいところ。メニューのバリエーションも少なく、シンプルなイギリス料理としては値が張る。私的にはCanteenに軍配を上げたい。

A sister restaurant of St. John, reputed as London’s No.1 British restaurant, St.John Hotel opened in spring 2011 in the midst of Chinatown, next to hip design hotel, W London Leicester Square. Regularly placed in Restaurant magazine‘s annual list of the Top 50 restaurants in the world and awarded a Michelin star in 2009,  St. John, located near Smithfield meat market, specialises in “nose to tail eating”, using offal and rare cuts such as pigs’ ears and tails, trotters, ducks’ heart, and bone marrow, cooked with traditional British recipes. It is a favourite eating out place for celebs and foodies. We live nearby, so we tried St. John and St. John Bread & Wine near Spitalfields one time each. I ordered lever on toast at St. John, though I don’t fancy lever, and I didn’t like it as I anticipated – don’t say I shouldn’t have ordered from the begining… We ordered chicken roast for two at St. John Bread & Wine, and got a whole chicken without someone slicing for us and we ended up messing our plate… With these experiences and the fact that I don’t fancy internal organs and pig’s outer parts, I had been avoiding St. John since then, but I gave one more chance to their new branch in Chinatown.

Its black & white-based interior with dark wood furniture is simple and bright, like other two restaurants, but the space is tighter than others and almost claustrophobic with very little space between tables. It was nearly full, even at 1opm reservation slot, and this didn’t help us breath either. As we had some drinks and nibbles before we went there, we just order lamb tongue with chicory (£8: photo below), watercress salad (£5.50) and chicken pie (£32 for two: photo below). Yes, the ingredients were fresh and dishes tasted good, but I didn’t like the texture and strange smell of the tongue (though I love sliced & sauteed beef tongue). The pie was too big, even for two, and got bored with it at the end – it would be better if it was a portion for one so we could order another dish to share. The menu is short and pricey as non-complicated dishes with cheaper cuts. I would rather go for more casual Canteen than St. John’s gangs.

“Biutiful” @ Prince Charles Cinema, Leicester Square

先日、チャイナタウンの近くにあるPrince Charles Cinemaで、現在公開中の映画「Biutiful（ビューティフル）」を観た。Prince Charles Cinemaは、最新のハリウッド映画からカルト、アートハウス、古典まで、違う映画を週に10本以上上映する、「repertory cinema（レパートリー・シネマ）」と呼ばれる独立系映画館で、映画ファンの間でカルト的な人気を誇る。サウンド・オブ・ミュージックやロッキー・ホラー・ショーなど、観衆が映画音楽に合わせて一緒に歌う「Singalonga Shows」や特別イベントなども行われる。現在地に移った1991年より低価格路線をとっていて、最近増設された上階スクリーンで上映される映画は£7.50（平日5時まで）/£9.50、地下上映分は£5.00（平日5時まで）/£6.00。年間£10で会員になるとさらにお得で、第1週目平日5時までの地下上映価格が何と£1.50！

We saw the movie “Biutiful” at the Prince Charles Cinema near Chinatown the other day. Prince Charles Cinema is a repertory cinema, showing a rotating program of cult, arthouse, and classic films alongside recent Hollywood releases, typically more than ten different films a week on two screens. The cinema has achieved a cult status amongst movie fans, and also hosts “Singalonga Shows”, screening of sing-a-long version such as The Sound of Music as well as The Rocky Horror Picture Show. The cinema has operated low ticket pricing policies since 1991 when it moved to the current location. Ticket prices for recently added second screen in the upper levels cost £7.50 (weekday before 5pm)/£9.50, and prices for cinema downstairs are £5.00(weekday before 5pm)/£6.00. Prices with £10 annual membership are even cheaper, starting from £1.50 for 1st weekday matinees downstairs!

「Biutiful（ビューティフル）」は、アカデミー賞にもノミネートされた『バベル』を撮った、アレハンドロ・ゴンサレス・イニャリトゥ監督の最新作で、スペイン・バルセロナを舞台に、がんに冒されたシングルファザーのウクスバルが、危険な闇世界を生きる中で、父親としての自分、家族、愛、スピリチュアリティ、犯罪、罪悪感、そして迫りくる死など、様々な葛藤を抱えてもがく姿を描くドラマ。ペネロペ・クルスの夫であるハビエル・バルデムが主人公のウクスバルを演じ、カンヌ映画祭主演男優賞を受賞した。

ウクスバルには明るい面と暗い面がある。二人の子供に対しては強くて愛情深い父で、アルコール中毒で情緒不安定な妻とは別れたあとも良い関係を維持しようともがく。ウクスバルは、実の兄と中国人犯罪組織のボスとともに、路上で不法に物品販売、時に麻薬取引まで行うアフリカ移民や、中国人移民への不法労働の手配など、闇取り引きで生計を立てている。彼のパートナーたちと違って、ウクスバルは搾取する不法移民たちにも、尊厳を持って対応する。そんなある日、自分が末期ガンに侵され、余命数週間と診断され、死の恐怖に直面しながらも、子供たちとの残された時間を大切にしようとするが、さまざまな困難が彼を襲う。

21グラムやバベルにも共通する、イリャニトゥ監督独特の美しくも悲哀溢れる映像や、バルデムの熱演は素晴らしかったけれど、2時間22分もの上映時間の間、この重苦しい雰囲気に浸り続けるのはちょっと辛い。不法移民との関係が少し美化され過ぎという気もするし、折りにふれスクリーンに現れる亡霊？生霊？といった超常現象にも少し興ざめ。ちょっと期待外れだったかも。

Biutiful is the dark drama from Mexican director Alejandro González Iñárritu (21 Grams and Babel). It is a story of Uxbal – a cancer-ridden single father who struggles to reconcile fatherhood, love, spirituality, crime, guilt and mortality amid the dangerous underworld of modern Barcelona. Javier Bardem won Best Actor at the 2010 Cannes Film Festival with his role of Uxbal.

Uxbal is a man with a bright side and a dark side. He is a strong but caring and affectionate father to his two children, and struggles to maintain a healthy relationship with their mother, despite her problems with alcohol and instability. Uxbal is also a criminal who oversees a small underground empire alongside Chinese crime boss and Uxbal’s impulsive brother. Uxbal deals from drugs to construction, but unlike his partners in crime, he tries to treat those around him with dignity even as he trades in human misery. His precarious world begins to collapse when he’s diagnosed with a terminal cancer and has only few weeks left to live; he tries to put his affairs in order in the time he has left, but runs into big trouble (synopsis reference: fandango.com).

Like in 21 Grams and Babel, the directors’ beautiful cinematography with intense sadness and Bardem’s powerful acting is impressing, but it was quite exhausting to immerse myself in the gloominess for 2 hours and 22 minutes of screening. Also I thought the relationship between Uxbal and the illegal immigrants seems to be too goody-goody and unrealistic, and some paranormal scenes with ghosts and stuffs were too much. Overall, a bit disappointed…
