Tonic Coffee Bar @ Sherwood Street, Piccadilly Circus

Tonic Coffee Barは、ピカデリー・サーカスの裏道に最近出来た、ちっちゃなカフェ。でも規模は小さくても、SpeakeasyやDepartment of Coffee and Social Affairs等と同じく、コーヒーにこだわりを持つロンドンのコーヒー店のネットワークであるCoffee Collectiveの一員だ。

そのこだわりのコーヒーの他に、種類は多くないけれどケーキやペイストリー等もある。カウンター席が3つしかないので、友人とのおしゃべりには不向きだけれど、イタリア人が行きつけのバール（＝イタリアでいうカフェ）でするように、カフェインを補充のため、さっと来てさっと飲んで帰るのがベスト。

Tonic Coffee Bar is a tiny, tiny café, appeared recently on a back street of Piccadilly Circus. It is really small, but it is a proud member of Coffee Collective, a network of quality coffee shops in London, together with Speakeasy and Department of Coffee and Social Affairs.

They serve artisan coffee as well as small tableful of cakes and pastries. Tonic has only 3 counter stools for eat-in, so it is not the perfect place for chit-chat with your friends. Just pop in and have a quick shot, as Italians do at their favourite ‘bar‘ (=equivalent to a café in Italy).

Harris + Hoole Coffee Shop @ Cannon Street, City of London

Taylor Street Baristasで成功を収めたオーストラリア人兄妹3人の手による、お洒落なコーヒーショップチェーン・Harris + Hoole。2012年に創業し、現在主にロンドンに14店舗を展開し、年末までに14店を新規開店する予定と、急成長を遂げている（Evening Standard記事）。しかし、「家族経営」を自称するHarris + Hooleの株式の49％をテスコが保有していると報道された後は、独立系コーヒーチェーンだと思ってたのに騙されたと批判を浴びているという。今年3月にロンドンブリッジ駅近くのテスコにHarris + Hoole第一号店をオープンさせたテスコは、今後も自店舗内にコーヒーショップを展開していく予定。

一般的に、イギリスメディアは大企業やチェーンに批判的で、家族経営や小規模ビジネスを賞賛するきらいがある。ネットでHarris + Hooleを検索すると、テスコとの関係に重点を置く記事がたくさん出てくる。でもその割にイギリスの街はチェーンだらけで、どの街も特徴がなく似たり寄ったり。便利だし安いし、好きか嫌いかは別として、結局人々はチェーン店で買い物する。Harris + Hooleを欺瞞的だという人もいるが、積極的にテスコとの関係を明かさなかったことは別として、大手企業の財政的援助で、美味しいコーヒーをより多くの人に届ける夢を叶えることの何が悪いのか？今まで、近所で不味いコーヒーにしかありつけなかった人たちも手軽に美味しいコーヒーが飲めるようになるなら、お客さんにとっても喜ばしいことだと思う。

私自身は、テスコがHarris + Hooleの約半分を所有すること自体は気にならない。ただ、彼らの食べ物と自慢のコーヒーが別段美味しい訳じゃないことが、わざわざ足を伸ばそうと思えない理由。店の規模が大きくなって、支店を多く持つようになると、従業員全員をちゃんと訓練して、店のスタンダードを落とさないことって難しいんだなと痛感する。

This sleek coffee shop chain, Harris + Hoole, is created by Australian brothers and a sister after their success in Taylor Street Baristas. Founded in 2012, Harris + Hoole now has 14 outlets in London and a few outside, and plans to open an additional 14 in central London before the end of this year (Evening Standard article). However, media and people attack the chain as disguising themselves as “family affair” with independent look (see their website), after it was reported that Tesco owns 49% of its share. After its first outlet of Harris + Hoole is introduced at the Tesco Metro near London Bridge station this March, Tesco is planning to open more inside of their stores.

In general, British media like to insist that they don’t like big corporations and care about small business, and you can find dozens of articles related to the connection between Harris + Hoole and ‘evil’ Tesco. On contrary to the media appraisal of small shops, British high streets are filled with chains, bigger or smaller, and people shop at the chains anyways, because it is more practical and often cheaper. It is like love & hate. Some people call Harris + Hoole as hypocritical, but they use Tesco’s money to achieve their dreams to bring good coffee to many, and people who are fed up with bad coffee from ‘small shop’ nearby would benefit as well. So what’s wrong with that, except the fact that they don’t clearly state that they get some help from Tesco.

The fact that Harris + Hoole is half owned by Tesco doesn’t bother me. The problem is their food (we ordered sandwiches and soups) and their ‘artisan’ coffee, which was just average and not really great. I guess training their employees to keep up the standard is harder than I thought.

The Hoxton Bakery @ Hoxton Street

この小さくて可愛いパン屋＆カフェ・Hoxton Bakeryは、先月Hoxton streetにオープンした。正確には「開店」ではなく、以前いたエリアに戻ってきた、といった方が正しい。オーナーは1999年に、ホクストン・ストリートで「Flour Power」というベーカリーを創業。品質の良い材料を使い、食品添加物等を極力使用しないパン作りをし、成功を収めた。その後、グルメが集まるBorough Market内に移転、現在でも「Bread Ahead」という屋台でパンを売っている。その彼らが、新しいプロジェクトとして、古巣のホクストン・ストリートに再度店をオープンさせた。カフェも併設する店内では、手作りローフの他、ソーセージロールやケーキ、ドーナツ等も扱う。コーヒーは飲んだことがないが、古いラ・マルゾッコでいれた「Nude」ブレンドのエスプレッソは決して不味くない筈。

This small artisan bakery & coffee shop, Hoxton Bakery has opened in Hoxton street last month. Strictly saying, ‘open’ is not the correct word – they returned to their old area. The owner of the Hoxton Bakery founded a bakery called ‘Flour Power’ in Hoxton Street back in 1999, and made the artisan breads, using good ingredients and avoiding unnecessary additives. After the success of ‘Flour Power’, they moved to prestigious Borough Market and still run their independent bakery stalls ‘Bread Ahead‘. Now they have returned to Hoxton Street to supply a great loaf and great coffee, as well as some other goodies, to their neighbours. We got very nice loaf + irresistible custard doughnuts (photos below).  We haven’t had a coffe yet, must be good, as they make espresso, using ‘Nude‘ blend from Brick Lane and old Marzocco espresso machine ;-)
