BP Walk through British Art @ Tate Britain

5月14日から始まったテートブリテンのBP Walk through British Artは、1500年代から現代に至るイギリス・アートのナショナルコレクションで、過去500年に制作された500以上の作品を20以上のギャラリールームに時系列に配している。Francis Bacon（フランシス・ベーコン）、John Constable（ジョン・コンスタブル）、William Hogarth（ウィリアム・ホガース）、 Thomas Gainsborough（トマス・ゲインズバラ）、 George Stubbs（ジョージ・スタッブス）、J.M.W. Turner（ジョゼフ・マロード・ウィリアム・ターナー）、Gwen John、Stanley Spencer、L.S.Lowry、John Everett Millais（ジョン・エヴァレット・ミレー）、Bridget Riley、Damien Hirst（ダミアン・ハースト）、 David Hockney（デイヴィッド・ホックニー）、Rachel Whitereadなど、イギリスの名だたるアーティストの作品を含む膨大なコレクションには圧倒される。

時系列展示以外に、一つの作品 / アーティスト / テーマをより深く掘り下げるBP Spotlightコレクションシリーズの新しいディスプレイも見物。現在、コンスタブルのThe Cornfield、Image of the British School、Moving Images: Painting and Early Film、アート教育におけるBasic Design展のほか、Keith Arnatt、Rose Wylie、Douglas Gordonなど近代アーティストのコレクションを見ることが出来る。イギリス人アーティストたちが描いた風景画を集めたLooking at the View展を含むと、テートブリテンだけで膨大な量のイギリスアートが楽しめるのだが、これを全部見て回るのは、なかなか目も頭も足も疲れる。途中でワインの一杯でも飲んで、ゆっくり見て回るのがお薦め。

BP Walk through British Art (from May 14) is a new chronological presentation of the national collection of British art in a chronological display – a walk through time from the 1500s to the present day. This massive collection of British art over the past 500 years comprises around 500 artworks in over 20 galleries, and includes works by major British artists such as Francis Bacon, John Constable, William Hogarth, Thomas Gainsborough, George Stubbs, J.M.W. Turner, Gwen John, Stanley Spencer, L.S.Lowry, John Everett Millais, Bridget Riley, Damien Hirst, David Hockney, and Rachel Whiteread (more details on the press release).

Alongside this chronological circuit, Tate Britain hosts a new series of seasonal BP Spotlight collection displays, which offer more depth on particular artworks, artists or themes: current displays include Constable’s The Cornfield, Image of the British School, Moving Images: Painting and Early Film, and Basic Design in art education, as well as on recent artists including Keith Arnatt, Rose Wylie and Douglas Gordon. Together with “Looking at the View” which explores the ways British artists have framed the view in their work, you can spend all day immersing yourself in British Art. Very interesting to see the British art all at once, but bit draining – I need a glass of wine in between.

Patrick Keiller: The Robinson Institute / Tate Britain Commission 2012

Duveen galleriesに設置される、テートの収蔵品に呼応した作品創りをアーティストに依頼するアート・プロジェクト・Tate Britain Commissionの今年の作品は、アーティストで映像作家のPatrick Keiller（パトリック・キーラー）のインスタレーション「The Robinson Institute（3月27日〜10月14日）」。

30年以上に渡り、キーラーはイギリスの都会と田舎のランドスケープの映像に、文学的逸話、歴史的エピソード、時事問題、経済批評などに突飛なユーモアを交えたナレーションを加えた様々な映像作品を創り続けている。このインスタレーションは、イギリス各地を彷徨い歩くRobinson（ロビンソン）という名の架空の人物との偶然の出会いを古い映画撮影機で撮影した、キーラーの代表作品シリーズにインスピレーションを得たという。

イギリスの風景、政治、経済、歴史を考察するというこの「The Robinson Institute」は、時に超現実的でバラエティに富んだ、数世紀に渡る120以上の作品を集めている。ロビンソンのイメージは、主にテートのコレクションから選ばれた作品や、歴史家、地理学者、地図製作者、地質学者の研究と共に見ることが出来る。7部に分かれたインスタレーションでは、ジョゼフ・マロード・ウィリアム・ターナー、アンディ・ウォーホル、アンドレアス・グルスキー、ジャクソン・ポロック、デニス・オッペンハイムといった、内外の著名アーティストの作品の横に、1795年にヨークシャー州に落ちた隕石や、政府の修正法案、ビアトリクス・ポターの作品、SF映画「宇宙からの侵略生物（Quatermass 2）」の映像など、ちょっと趣向の変わった作品が並んでいる。

作品自体や作品のチョイスは面白いけれど、同じパートにある作品同士の繋がりとその意味が、外国人である私にはよくわからなかった。各パートに、イギリス人知識人でなくても、誰でも分かる説明があればいいのに、と思う。

Artist and independent film-maker Patrick Keiller created an unique installation called “The Robinson Institute” (Mar 27  –  Oct 14) at the Duveen galleries for Tate Britain Commission 2012, an art project which invites an artist to develop a new work in response to the Tate Collection.

Over the past 30 years Patrick Keiller has developed a range of films which combine expressionless images of British landscape, rural and urban, with a narration which draws together wide-ranging literary anecdotes, historical episodes, current affairs, economic critique and offbeat humour. “The Robinson Institute” is inspired by Keiller’s best known films in which his fictional creation – an elusive scholar named Robinson – wanders the English landscape and records his chance encounters on an old cine camera.

The exhibition is the reflection of the British landscape, politics, economics and history and it brings together more than 120 diverse and often surreal artworks and objects from across several centuries. Robinson’s images are shown alongside other artworks, mainly from the Tate’s own collections, as well as works by historians, geographers, cartographers and geologists. The seven-part installation includes renown international artists such as JMW Turner, Andy Warhol, Andreas Gursky, Jackson Pollock and Dennis Oppenheim, together with unusual objects such as meteorite that fell in Yorkshire in 1795 and a parliamentary amendment, as well as Beatrix Potter and clips from the Hammer’s sci-fi horror Quatermass 2.

Individual works are impressive and the choice of works are interesting, but it is not easy to understand the connection between each work and messages behind, for me as a foreigner who don’t know about UK fully. I wish there were an explanation at each part of the installation that helps me understand what it is about (or did I miss it??).

Mr & Mrs Smith New Italy Hotel Collection

Mr & Mrs Smithの新しいホテルガイド、 「Mr & Mrs Smith Hotel Collection: Italy」が、先月21日に出版された。Mr & Mrs Smithの他のガイドと同じく、スタイリッシュなデザイン、美しい写真にセンスのいい色使いと、素敵な本に仕上がっている。掲載されているホテルも、プチホテルから中規模デザインホテル（大規模高層ホテルチェーンはない）、シティホテルからリゾート、そして値段もリーズナブルなところから長期滞在は考えられない高級ホテルまで、Mr & Mrs Smithならではのテイストの良いホテルが集められている。

強いて欠点をいえば、ライトグレーやスモーキーイエローなど、薄い色の背景に白地の文字がとても読みにくいこと。旅行雑誌の記事のように、ライターの個人的体験を綴ったホテルレビューが、ちょっと長くて鬱陶しいこと。ルネッサンス・アートのYES/NOチャートが意味不明なこと。パスタのイラストがパスタに見えないこと（写真の方が分かりやすいと思う）、か。

Mr & Mrs Smith‘s new hotel guide,” Mr & Mrs Smith Hotel Collection: Italy” is published last month. Like other Mr & Mrs Smith‘s gudes, the book is stylishly made: cool design, nice photos, and sophisticated colours. Hotels selected for the book are sleek and chic, typical of Mr & Mrs Smith, and in good variety: from petit B&B to moderate size boutique hotels (but neither skyscrapers nor international mega chains on the book); affordable to upscale that makes me hesitate to stay long; city hotels as well as country retreats.

If I have to list up shortcomings of the guide, it would be: hard-to-read white types on light colours like light gray and smokey yellow; hotel reviews based on writer’s personal experiences, like in articles on travel magazines, are a bit long and irritating (a list of facts is well enough on a guide); make-no-sense YES/NO chart for “HOW TO…identify Renaissance art”; and illustrations of pasta which don’t look like pasta – photos maybe easier to understand this case.

The big chill is still here, and I am freezing… Temperature dropped around minus 5° last night and today’s maximum is around 1°. It is so cold that I don’t feel like going out. この中に、10年ほど前にバンコクに行った時に泊まったスコータイ（Sukothai）・ホテルを発見。懐かしいなあ。タイ最初の独立王朝であるスコータイ王朝のイメージを再現したスコータイは、バンコクの喧噪の中にあって、不思議なほど静寂さが漂う。アンティークでまとめられた落ち着いた部屋は、1日中汗だくで歩き回って疲れた体を、心地よく休ませてくれた。サービスも良く、とてもいいホテルだった。またいつか訪れてみたいな。

In this book, I found the Sukhothai hotel in Bangkok where we stayed about 10 years ago – good old memory. Inspired by the Thailand’s historic Kingdom of Sukhothai, the hotel is surprisingly quiet and tranquil in the midst of bustling big city. The room decorated with antique furniture relaxed and soothed me after long day sweating and walking all over the city. It was a very nice and memorable experience. This book makes me feel like going back again, someday…
