Longroom@St John’s Street, Smithfields

 

Longroomは、クリエイティブ産業が集まるクラーケンウェルに3月にオープンした、お洒落なパブ。ビールが売りだけれど、スミスフィールズ食肉市場に近いという立地から、「quality meat（良品質の肉）」も謳う。メニューはシンプルで、Gail’s bakeryのパンを使ったサンドイッチに、グリルチーズかhot salt beefの盛り合わせ、サラダ、サイドディッシュ、そしてデザート1種のみ。パブだからとあんまり期待していなかったけど、トーストしたサンドイッチ（Lincolnshire Poacher £7.50＆Craft Beer rarebit £7）は意外に美味、味をしめて後日再来店、スープ半分サンドイッチ半分の「worker’s lunch」セット（£7.50）を注文。サンドイッチは期待通りの味だったが、スープが水っぽく具がほとんど入っていなかったのがマイナス点。そして女性ならともかく、男性なら2人前必要なのでは、と思うほど量が少ない。コーヒーも、近くのWorkshop Coffeeのコーヒー豆を使っていながら、バリスタかコーヒー豆、エスプレッソマシンの何が悪かったのか分からないが、とにかくお粗末な味。サクッとサンドイッチだけ食べて帰るか、パブとしてビールを飲みに行くのが無難。

Longroom is another good looking pub in Smithfields, opened in this March. Yes, this is a pub and their specialty is beers, but they claim that they also serve ‘quality meat’, as it is located just a stone away from the Smithfields meat market. Their food menu is rather short in compare to their drink menus, and basically what they have is several kinds of sandwiches with bread from Gail’s bakery and sharing boards of grilled cheese or hot salt beef, as well as few salads and sides and only one desert. Their toasted sandwiches (Lincolnshire Poacher £7.50 and Craft Beer rarebit £7) were surprisingly good. Another day we ordered their “worker’s lunch” (1/2 soup & 1/2 sandwich £7.50). Again the sandwiches were good, but their soups (onions and broccoli) were diluted and barely contained any piece of ingredients. The portion was small, not for ‘workers’ who definitely need to eat double of it. And the coffee from nearby Workshop Coffee were disappointedly bad. We were not sure what was bad, the barista, coffee beans, or espresso machine… Go for sandwich, or beers only.

Cologne Christmas Market @ Southbank

今年で3回目となるCologne Christmas Marketが12月23日まで、テムズ川沿いのSouthbank Centre/Royal Festival Hall（サウス・バンク・センター／ロイヤル・フェスティバル・ホールとLondon Eye（ロンドン・アイ）の間で開催中。伝統的なドイツのクリスマス・マーケットをロンドンに再現したこのマーケットには、60近くの木造のシャレーが並び、ブラートヴルスト（ドイツのソーセージ）、グリューワイン、ハート形のジンジャーブレッド、ローストしたアーモンドやキャンディーなどのフード＆ドリンク、そして手作りのおもちゃやジュエリー、レース、ろうそく、陶芸品や、クリスマスツリーのオーナメントなどの工芸品を売っている。また、メリーゴーランドや、子供向けの30分のショーが行われるSanta’s Secret Villageもある。

写真は去年のものだけれど、去年も今年も基本的に変わってない。何年か前、ウィーンに旅行した時にクリスマス・マーケットを体験したけれど、サウスバンクのと何かが違う。何が違うかと考えたら、ウィーンのクリスマス・マーケットは、もっときらびやかに飾られていて活気があり、訪れている人々もとても幸せそうだった。でもサウスバンクのは、中途半端で盛り上がりに欠け、何だかうら寂しげ。人々もあんまり楽しんでるように見えない。違う文化の伝統を形だけ真似するのではなく、もうひと工夫してほしいところ。

Cologne Christmas Market is taking place for the third time between the Southbank Centre/Royal Festival Hall and London Eye along the River Thames. Bringing a traditional German Christmas Market to London, around 60 traditionally decorated wooden chalets sell German specialty such as “Bratwurst”, a glass of “Glühwein” (German Mulled Wine), gingerbread hearts, roasted almonds and candies, as well as handcrafted gifts, toys, jewelry, hand tatted laces, candles, ceramics and glass ornaments for Christmas tree. There are also the carousel and Santa’s Secret Village that houses 30-minute children’s shows, to entertain small visitors.

These photos are of last year’s, but it is more or less the same this year. I went to Christmas markets in Vienna few years ago, and it was much more fun than the Southbank’s, which is rather sad and depressing. Christmas markets in Vienna was more glittering and lively that gave me true festive feelings. Visitors there looked far more happier than the ones in Southbank who looked bored or little interested. The organizer must work harder, instead of just making a bad copy of a festivity from foreign culture.

New Medieval & Renaissance Galleries opens @ Victoria & Albert Museum

7年もの年月と3170万ポンドをかけてようやく完成した、ヴィクトリア&アルバート博物館（V&A）の新しいMedieval & Renaissance Galleries（中世ヨーロッパ＆ルネサンス・ギャラリー）が今日12月2日にオープンした。私は、華やかでいて素朴なタッチの、この時代のアートが好きなので、このギャラリーのオープニングを楽しみにしていた。計10室のギャラリーには、ローマ帝国の没落からルネッサンス時代の終わりまで、紀元300年から1600年頃までの美術品約1800点を展示。繊細な彫刻や本等の小さなものから、教会の内部、ステンドグラスや階段等、イングランドで作られた美術品からスペイン、フランス、ドイツ、イタリア等の芸術品まで、幅広いコレクションからは、当時のヨーロッパの芸術と文化を垣間見ることができる。ゆっくり観ていると一日がつぶれそうな、見応えたっぷりのギャラリーだ。ルネサンス時代の芸術はよく知られているけれど、文化が停滞した「暗黒時代（the dark ages）」と呼ばれる中世にも、宗教美術等を中心に、素晴らしい芸術が存在していたのだなと感心。

The Victoria & Albert museum (V&A) opens its new Medieval & Renaissance Galleries today, after spending 7 years and £31.7m of cost. I was looking for its opening, as I like lavish but realistic and simple medieval art.  The 10 galleries occupying 2 floors are filled with more than 1,800 objects from AD300 to 1600; the fall of the Roman Empire to the end of the Renaissance period. From small objects like sculptures and books to large artifacts such as church interiors, stained glasses and staircases, a wide variety of the collection range from the objects from Spain, France, Germany and Italy, to abundant works of art made in England, and it tells the story of European art and culture of the periods. You can spend many hours just looking at these beautiful masterpieces in the gallery. Renaissance art is widely known but I was impressed that magnificent artworks and crafts, especially religious art, also existed during the middles ages, often called “the Dark Ages,” – a period of cultural decline.

９月頃、まだ工事中だったギャラリーを見学する機会があった。既にいくらか展示品が置いてあったものの、まだ足場や木枠がそこら中に置いてあって、こんなに素晴らしいギャラリーに仕上がるとは全然予想できなかった。さすがV&A、イギリスを代表する美術館の一つだけあって、素晴らしいギャラリーに仕上がっている。1,800もの美術品が置かれているのに、すっきりレイアウトされていて広々としており、心が落ち着く。他の多くのイギリスの美術館・博物館のように、このギャラリーも入場料無料。Heritage Lottery Fund（歴史的建造物等の国民的遺産を保護するための、宝くじ収益金）から£975万ポンドの援助があった他は、全て寄付金でまかなわれたそうだ。さすが、芸術や歴史的遺産の保護に熱心な国民性だけある。本当に素晴らしいギャラリーなので、中世やルネッサンス美術に興味がなくても、機会があればぜひ行ってみてください！

We had a chance to observe the galleries under construction in September. There were some works already there but there are wooden frames and construction materials all over, and I never thought it would be transformed to such a magnificent and elegant galleries. That’s V&A – everything they do is always impressive! It is amazingly spacious, though the galleries contain almost 2,000 artifacts, and truly tranquil. And the admission is absolutely free (though some amount of donation is suggested), as many other British museums and galleries! Other than £9.75m grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund, the cost of making the galleries was covered by donations. It is highly recommended to visit the gallery, no matter if you are interested in Medieval & Renaissance art or not – it is spectacular, and I liked it a lot!
