Heatherwick Studio: Designing the Extraordinary @ V&A

ヴィクトリア&アルバート博物館（V&A）で開催中の「Heatherwick Studio: Designing the Extraordinary」展（5月31日〜9月30日）は、ロンドンを拠点とするデザイン＆建築事務所Heatherwick Studio（ヘザーウィック・スタジオ）の初の大規模展。V&AのBritish design展の関連イベントで、オリンピック前後に開催される文化イベント・London 2012 Festivalの一環でもある。

Heatherwick Studioは、革新的技術と素材を用いた公共記念建造物や3次元作品で有名なイギリス人インダストリアル・デザイナー、Thomas Heatherwick（トーマス・ヘザーウィック）が1994年に設立した。かのサー・テレンス・コンランがヘザーウィックを「Leonardo da Vinci of our times（現代のレオナルド・ダ・ビンチ）」呼んだそうだが、ちょっとそれは大げさとしても、彼の作品は創造性に富み、見ていて楽しい。ただ展示室であるporter gallery（ポーター・ギャラリー）は狭すぎて、展示品は模型や写真が多いにしても、彼の作品の型破りなスケールが表現しきれていない気がする。

V&A’s “Heatherwick Studio: Designing the Extraordinary” (May 31 – September 30) is the first major solo exhibition of the work of Heatherwick Studio. It is a part of a season of events celebrating British design at the V&A and also the London 2012 Festival, a series of cultural events taken place around London Olympic 2012.

Heatherwick Studio is a London-based design and architecture studio, founded in 1994 by Thomas Heatherwick, who is an English industrial designer known for innovative use of engineering and materials in public monuments and sculptures. It is said that Sir Terence Conran called Heatherwick as the “Leonardo da Vinci of our times”. It is a bit of an exaggeration, but his works are creative and fun. The  porter gallery where the exhibition is taken place, is too small for his large scale works, even for its prototype and photos, and a bit claustrophobic.

ロンドン名物として親しまれたRoutemaster（ルートマスター）の特徴である、開放式後部プラットフォームを備えた新しい二階建てバス、「ニュー・バス・フォー・ロンドン」。現在数台が38番ルートを運行中。

‘New Bus for London‘, incorporating an open platform which is a feature of the iconic Routemaster. Currently it is operating only on No.38 route (not all of them).

AL_A “Timber Wave”: London Design Festival @ V&A

9月17日から25日まで、毎年恒例のLondon Design Festival 2011（ロンドン・デザイン・フェスティバル）が開催中。ロンドンのあちこちに点在する、美術館、デザイン事務所、ショップ、ギャラリーなどの参加施設の前に立てられた、フェスティバルのアイコンである赤い立て看板を、よく目にする。フェスティバルに参加しているヴィクトリア&アルバート博物館（V&A）でも期間中、インスタレーションやトーク、ワークショップなどのスペシャルイベントが行われている（詳細はV&Aウェブサイトで）。

V&Aの見所は、Cromwell Road（クロムウェル・ロード）側入口に設置された、Amanda Levete Architects and Arupによる巨大インスタレーション作品「Timber Wave（木の波）」（9月17日〜10月15日）。通常家具作りに使われるラミネート技術をアメリカンオークに施し作り上げた、12mもの高さの格子模様の立体的な螺旋は圧巻。木とは思えないしなやかさと木独特の生命力が感じられる。

London Design Festival 2011 came back to the city – from September 17 to 25, you see a festval’s icon, red signboard in front of the participating organizations such as museums, design firms, shops, and galleries, all over London. Victoria & Albert Museum is also a part of the festival and visitors can enjoy commissioned installations and displays as well as special events, talks and workshops throughout the period (details are at V&A website).

A gigantic installation of ‘Timber Wave‘ by Amanda Levete Architects and Arup (September 17 – October 15) at the Cromwell Road entrance is one of the highlight at the V&A festival program. The three-dimensional latticework spiral is made of American red oak, using lamination techniques normally used in furniture making, and applied to create a piece 12m high. It has un-treelike flexibility and treelike vitality – spectacular.
