Free Papers in Hackney & East London

近年、ヒップでエキサイティングなエリアとしてのイーストロンドンの評判が上がるにつれ、ローカルなニュースやカフェ、レストラン、バー、アート＆カルチャー、イベント情報などを掲載した新しい無料情報紙が次々誕生している。写真は最近この辺でよく見かける3紙。

Hackney Citizenは、独立系の無料月刊紙で、いつ創刊したかの記載はないけれど、2009年6月にFacebookページが出来たことを考えると、その頃だろう。2010年7月には従来の年4回から毎月の発行になり、現在、毎月第一週にハックニー内の駅、カフェ、ショップ、マーケット、図書館などに置かれる。

East End Reviewについては、この12月号が3号目とまだ新しく、イーストロンドンの音楽やアート、シアター、本、映画、ファッション、フード＆ドリンクを紹介するということぐらいしか、情報がない。でも、発行者がHackney Citizenと同じくCitizen Media Ltdなので、この2紙は姉妹紙なんだろう。

Dalstonistは、近年開発著しいDalstonとその周辺エリアに住む18〜34歳の若者をターゲットに、ローカルカルチャー、音楽、イベント、ナイトライフに関する情報を掲載。オンラインメディアとしてスタートしたが、最近季刊で印刷版を発行、2013/14年冬号が記念すべき第一号だ。

3紙ともカラーで紙面デザインもいい。イーストロンドンの今を知るのに便利。

As East End’s reputation as a hip & exciting district in London has gone up steeply in recent few years, some free papers have come out to tell readers about local news, cafes & restaurants, art & culture, and events. The three papers in the photo above are the ones I often see at many places across the area.

Hackney Citizen is Hackney’s independent, free monthly newspaper. I can’t find when they started, but I guess it was June 2009 when they joined Facebook. From July 2010, it became a monthly publication from its quarterly print editions, distributed in the first week of every month at Hackney’s markets, train stations, and in cafes, shop, businesses and libraries.

I can’t find much information on internet about East End Review, rather than talking about arts and culture in East London, such as music, art, theatre, books, film, and fashion, as well as food & drink. And this December issue is the third edition of them. But the publisher, Citizen Media Ltd, is the same as of Hackney Citizen, so I assume they are sister papers.

Dalstonist offers news about local culture, music, events and nightlife for 18-34 year olds (I am out of their target readers…) in emerging area of Dalston and the surrounding area in Hackney. They started as online paper but now they launched their first quarterly print publication for winter 2013/14.

All three papers are printed in colour and decently designed. Perfect source to get more in depth information of East End.

Indian/Bangladeshi Restaurants in East London: Gujarati Rasoi @ Bradbury Street, Dalston

南アジアレストラン in イーストロンドンシリーズの最後は、オーバーグラウンドのDalston Kingsland Road駅に近い、Bradbury StreetにあるGujarati Rasoi。以前に書いたBird Caféと同じ通りだ。

ロンドンのマーケットでインド西部のグジャラート州の料理を出す屋台を始めたインド人の母と息子が、最近お洒落になりつつあるダルストンのエリアにこの小さなレストランをオープン。水曜から土曜までの夜だけの営業だけれど、テイクアウトのランチなら、Borough Market（月曜〜水曜）、Exmouth Market（火曜〜金曜）、Broadway Market（土曜日）それぞれの屋台で買える。詳細をウェブサイトでチェックしようと思ったけれど、何故だかエラーで調べられず。

Gujarati Rasoiでは、彼らの家庭のレシピに基にした、ベジタリアンのグジャラート料理（Gujarati food）を出す。ウィキペディアによると、グジャラート州はジャイナ教菜食主義とヒンドゥー教の影響で、ベジタリアンが多数派なのだそう。レストランの中は壁が板張りだったりと飾り気はないけど、天井から下げられているカラフルな三角旗や、様々なスパイスやハーブ類が入ったガラスのジャーが沢山並んだ棚等、シンプルさの中にちょっとしたアクセントがあって、なかなか素敵だなと思った。私たちは6月に行ったので、その後多少変わったかもしれない。

日替わりメニューもインテリア同様、前菜2品、サイドディッシュ4品、メイン2品のみと、いたってシンプル。入口近くのオープンキッチンで調理された料理は、確かにフレッシュな材料を使って手抜きせず作っていると分かる。でも、ただでさえお腹が膨れなさそうなベジタリアンなのに量も少なく、二人で前菜・サイドディッシュ3品とメイン2品を頼んでもまだ空腹感が残った。リッチとは言えない若者が多いエリアなのに、若くない私たちがお腹が膨れないなんて、この先大丈夫なのかな？

Last in the series of Asian restaurants in East London is Gujarati Rasoi on Bradbury Street, the same street with Bird Café, near Dalston Kingsland Road overground station.

Started with food stalls run by mother and son, selling Gujarati street food, now they opened a small restaurant in another fashionable area of Dalston. The restaurant opens only for dinner from Wednesday to Saturday, but their stalls are still at Exmouth Market (Tuesday – Friday) and Broadway Market (Saturdays), Borough Market (Monday – Wednesday), if you prefer takeaway lunch or Dalston is not in an easy reach. I tried to check their website for details, but it was not working at this moment.

Gujarati Rasoi offers traditional vegetarian Gujarati food based on their family recipes. According to Wikipedia, a cuisine in Gujarati region in west India, primarily vegetarian due to the influence of Jain vegetarianism and Hinduism. We went there in June, and the restaurant was bare simple with few tables with some of which overlook their open kitchen. It was quite a while ago and some details may have changed a bit since then. But I like their minimalistic interior with some cute touch, like colorful flags hanging from the ceiling and lots of glass jars containing a variety of spices and herbs displayed on the shelf high up.

The daily changing menu was quite short, like two starters, four sides, and two mains only. It is said that food is freshly made, and in fact I could feel it from their dishes. However, the portion was a bit small and not filling, partly because of its vegetarian concept. Can predominantly young customers with little money (or they have a lot maybe?) be satisfied like this? We are not young, but after the dinner we were still hungry…

注文した地ビールのMeantime India Pale Aleもあんまり好きじゃないかも。でもデザインは素敵。

I am not crazy about this Meantime India Pale Ale as well. But it’s a nice design.

Fabrica 584 Café @ Kingsland Road, Dalston

私たちがハックニーに引っ越してきた7年前、キングスランドロードやダルストンは、今とは少し違う様相だった。アフリカ産の野菜やハラールに即した肉類等を売るRidley Road Marketに象徴されるようにアフリカ人やカリブ海出身者が多いこの地区は、現在のような高層アパート群、洒落たお店やレストラン＆カフェは全くなかった。それが2年前にOverground East London線が開通した後は、地価の上がったホクストンやショーディッチに手が出ないイギリス人やヨーロッパ人の若者がじわじわと侵出し始め、彼らをターゲットにした店が増えている。→以前のブログ記事：Tin Café・Bird Café・Other Café

イタリア人が経営するFabrica 584もその一つ。この辺りにありがちな、ヴィンテージの家具やむき出しの壁や柱をそのまま活かした、カジュアルでエッジーな店内は、いかにもイーストロンドンらしい住民で賑わっている。イタリア人が得意とするのはやはり食べ物とコーヒー。ここも例外ではなく、サンドイッチは新鮮で美味しいし、コーヒーも文句なし。

When we moved in Hackney about 7 years ago, Kingsland Road and Dalston used to look quite different from now. There was no fancy apartment complex, stylish stores, hip restaurants/cafés, in this predominantly African and Caribbean neighborhood, represented by the place like Ridley Road Market selling exotic vegetables and Halal meat. Since London Overground East London line opened two years ago, young British and Europeans who can’t afford to live Hoxton and Shoreditch have gradually invaded this area, so as restaurants and cafés targeting those people. Tin Café, Bird Café, Other Café are some of them I wrote previously.

Italian-own Fabrica 584 café is another one of those. As other fellow cafés, the interior is rough, bare and edgy, and atmosphere is laid-back. What Italians are generally better than British at is food and coffee, and Fabrica 584 is not an exception. Their sandwiches were fresh and delicious, and my flat white was exactly the way I wanted (though flat white is not Italian invention).

Other Cafe & Gallery @ Balls Pond Road, Dalston / Kingsland Road

OvergroundのDalston Junction駅から西へ徒歩数分のところにある、カフェ＆ギャラリー・Other。地上階・地下と2フロアある店内は、アンティークの家具や小物が、無造作に見えるけれどちゃんとバランスを考えてセンスよく配置されており（Mura Interiors）、それら調度品を見ているだけでも楽しい。晴れた日は入口横の大きな窓から太陽が燦々と注ぎ、ほっこりと午後のひと時を過ごせる。

ウェブサイトには、「イングリッシュ・ブレックファストから、南米料理やイタリアンまで、バラエティ豊かで新鮮な手作り料理」を出すとある。実は昨年10月に一度行って以来Otherには行っていないんだけれど、その理由はここのお料理がイマイチだから。スープとペンネ・カルボナーラ（下写真）は、眉目麗しいけれど、味にパンチがないと言うか味が薄いし、ペンネは茹で過ぎ。生ハムとトマトのパニーニ・サンドイッチはトーストされておらず、ボソボソしていて、これまた味がない。お店の雰囲気も居心地もいいだけに、リピートできないのはちょっと残念。あともう一つ、ギャラリーの展示作品（ウェブサイト）がお店の雰囲気にマッチしていない気も。

Walking few minutes to the west from Dalston Junction Overground station, you see Other Cafe & Gallery on the right side. Consisting of 2 floors, ground floor and downstairs, the place is decorated by Mura Interiors with antique furniture and bric-a-brac, looking randomly but meticulously in good balance & taste. It is fun just looking at those old items, and also you can enjoy lazy afternoon with plenty of sunshine coming through big windows next to the entrance.

Other’s website says that they offer a variety of fresh home-made food, from traditional English breakfast to Italian and South American dishes. To say the truth, we’ve never come back there after we went once last October, simply because their food was not impressive. Soup and penne carbonara (photo below) looked good, but were tasteless and uninspired. Panino with ham and tomatoes was not toasted and very dry and, again, no taste. The space is nice and cozy, and it is a shame that we can’t come back because of their food. Another thing is the artworks at the gallery don’t seem to match the atmosphere of the place (see website)…

Bird Café @ Bradbury Street, Dalston

Dalston Kingsland（ダルストン・キングスランド）駅北側のBradbury Street（ブラッドベリー・ストリート）に最近オープンした、Bird Café（バード・カフェ）。ミッド・センチュリー風のインテリアに、ファンキーなランプシェードやアートが同居した、いかにもイーストエンド風のカフェだ。「Bird」というだけあって、トイレには小さな鳥のオブジェが並んでいる。テーブルが中に4台、外に2台あるだけの小さいこのカフェ、時間がゆっくり流れていて、なんとも寛げる。その日に焼かれたサワードウを使ったサンドイッチは、時間はかかるけれど丁寧に作られていて美味。Climpson & Sonsから仕入れたコーヒー豆で淹れたコーヒーや紅茶、ケーキやスムージーもある。

このカフェのあるBradbury Street、理由は分からないけれど、しばらく閉鎖されていて、4月30日に再オープンしたみたい（参考記事）。端から端まで歩いて1分もかからないこの通りに、ロンドン中心部ではあまり見かけないナイジェリア料理やカリビアン・フードのテークアウト・ショップや（この辺りはアフリカ系やカリブ系黒人が多い）や、ブティックや中古レコード・レトロ物ショップが混在している。まだいくつか空きスペースがちらほらあるけれど、近くにOvergroundのDalston Junction（ダルストン・ジャンクション）駅が開通し、2006年オープンのパブリック・アート・スペース、Gillet Square（ギレット・スクエア）もすぐ側で、これからトレンディなエリアになりそうな予感がする。

Bird Café just opened in 2 months ago on Bradbury Street, on the north of Dalston Kingsland Station. This cozy café with just four tables inside and two outside is typical East End-ish, decorated with mid-century furniture and quirky lamp shades and modern art. You can see cute little ‘bird’ objects in the toilet as well. Their tasty sandwiches with  freshly baked sour dough and fresh ingredients are made with love. You have to wait a while but it worth waiting. Their coffee are from famous Climpson & Sons, and teas, smoothies, salads and cakes are also available.

Bradbury Street was supposely closed for a while and re-opened on the last day of April (Hackney Citizen article), though I don’t know why. On this tiny street with less than one minute walk, there are Nigerian and Carribean takeaway shops that are rarely seen in central London as well as independent boutique and old records and retro shops staying side by side. With recent opening of new Overground Dalston Junction station, as well as the vibe from the next door public art space Gillet Square, Bradbury Street can be transformed to the latest hip area in the East, I believe.
