HEL YES! Design and Food from Helsinki: London Design Festival 2010

家の近所に、何度も描いては上描きされてきた、グラフィティのメッカ？がある。元はRentokilの倉庫だったこの建物、David Choeの作品が描かれていた時にブログに書いたが（過去エントリー）、その後、銃のアウトラインの中に地図を画いた、PURE EVILの「MURDER MILE」が取って代わり、少し前に、新しい作品を描いている場面に遭遇したので、写真を撮った。いつものグラフィティかと思ったら、普段は閉まっている建物に人が出入りしている。新しいギャラリーかお店がオープンするのかと疑問に思っていたが、9月14日、Daily Candyのニュースレターで、その謎がついに解けた。

There is a Mecca for Graffiti artists near our home, where several graffitis overpainted by the new one on the former Rentokil depot. Since I talked about David Choe‘s work last year (past entry), PURE EVIL’s MURDER MILE took over the space, and recently I photographed someone working on the new project. I thought it was just another graffiti, but since then there had been people coming in and out from this normally empty building, and we were expecting an opening of a new gallery or shop. Then on September 14, the mystery was solved, by Daily Candy’s daily newsletter.

London Design Festivalの一環として、フィンランド最高の食とデザインを紹介するレストラン＆展示スペース「HEL YES!」が、9月15日から10月3日までの水曜から日曜日の14日間という期間限定でオープンしたのだ。ヘルシンキで人気のレストラン「Ateljé Finne」や「Kuurna」を手がけるAntto MelasniemiとFinnish Instituteがロンドン・デザイン・フェスティバルのために企画、イギリスで活躍するイラストレーターのKlaus Haapaniemi（クラウス・ハーパニエミ）とアート・ディレクター＆コンセプトデザイナーのMia Walleniusなどが加わって作り上げた。Iittala（イッタラ）とArtek（アルテック）が特製の家具や照明、食器などを用意。またその他の照明デザインや、家具、制服なども、フィンランドのデザイナーが特別に製作した。

家も近いし、フィンランド料理なんてあんまりお目にかかることがないので、行ってみたいなと思ったけれど、既に期間中の予約は一杯、写真を撮るだけで終わった。食事しなくても、中の見学や、コーヒーやドリンクの注文は出来るそう。昨日書いたWenlock Armsの目と鼻の先、またVictoria Miro Galleryも近いので、期間中近くに来ることがあれば、３つセットでお試しあれ。

As a part of the London Design Festival, “HEL YES!“, a temporary restaurant and exhibition showcasing the best Finnish food and design, opens just 14 days, Wednesday to Sunday from September 15 to October 3. The Finnish Institute and Antto Melasniemi who manages Helsinki’s popular restaurants “Ateljé Finne” and “Kuurna“, planned and created together with UK-based fashion illustrator Klaus Haapaniemi, an art director & concept designer Mia Wallenius and others. Iittala and Artek supplied exclusive customized furniture, lighting and tableware, and the lighting design, furniture and staff uniforms were designed exclusively for HEL YES! by leading Finnish contemporary designers.

We wanted to make a reservation since it is nearby, and it is a rare occasion to try Finnish food, but this temporary restaurant is fully booked during the period – so we just took some photos. But HEL YES! is open without booking for viewing, coffee and drinks. It is just few steps away from the Wenlock Arms I wrote yesterday, and the Victoria Miro Gallery is around the corner – why don’t you try these three as a set, if you are around during the event?

Graffitis @ Whitecross Street & Redchurch Street

追記：今日2010年3月24日に前を通りかかったら、Teddy Badenの「Dogs on Whitecross Market」も、Banksyの「Ratapult」もありませんでした。。。消されてしまったのでしょうか？？

UPDATE: Teddy Baden’s “Dogs on Whitecross Market” and Banksy’s “Ratapult” were gone, when we passed by today on March 24, 2010… Were these overpainted??

今日は、Whitecross Streetにあるグラフィティ／ストリート・アート3点を紹介。カラフルでゴチャゴチャしてとんがった感じの、自己主張の強い、典型的なグラフィティと違って、シンプルでなかなかいい感じ。

Today’s topic is about three graffitis / street arts on Whitecross Street. These are not typical colorful, messy and edgy graffiti, but I like its simple style, without an outcry of the artists.

上の写真は、Sweet（今はComptoir Gourmandという名前かも）というカフェの横にある、犬のステンシル・アートで有名なTeddy Badenの「Dogs on Whitecross Market」。あのBanksy（バンクシー）の、猫と空飛ぶネズミの「Ratapult」（写真下）のすぐ隣に描かれているのは、イヌとネコの対決を意味するのか。私はイヌ派なのでTeddy Badenの作品の方が好きだけれど、Ratapultもバンクシーの作品の中ではメッセージ色がなくて良い（それとも何か意味があるのかな？）。今は、その2点が描かれた壁の奥にあるチャイニーズのテイクアウト店が改装中で、建築材などが前に置かれていて、見えないかもしれない。

バンクシーと言えば、「Exit Through the Gift Shop」という映画を初監督、サンダンス映画祭でプレミア上映された。3月5日に、イギリス公開が始まり、上々の評価を得ている。

The photo above is “Dogs on Whitecross Market” by Teddy Baden, known for his stencil arts of dogs. The work is located on the wall next to Sweet café (it may be called Comptoir Gourmand now), side by side with Banksy‘s ‘Ratapult’ (photo below), with a cat and a flying rat. It is interesting that Baden chose his work to be next to Banksy’s work – a battle between dogs and a cat & a rat? I prefer Baden’s work as I am a dog person, but Ratapult is cute too, without his usual political message (or I haven’t notice the meaning of the work?). Now a Chinese Takeaway shop next to the wall has been on renovation and you may not be able to see the works, due to the construction materials piled up in front of them.

Banksy made his movie debut with “Exit Through the Gift Shop”, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival. The movie is released in UK on March 5th and has gained good reviews from UK media.

ちなみに下の写真も、Teddy Badenの作品（と思う）。Brick Laneの近く、ストリート・アートの宝庫のRedchurch Streetで見つけた。Roaのリスのグラフィティもこの通りにある。

動物ついでに、もう1点、Redchurch Streetのトラがシマウマを捕まえている作品。でもあの辺のグラフィティは、消されたり、上書きされたりはしょっちゅうなので、この2作品、まだあるかな？

Another graffiti of animal on Redchurch street – a tiger jumping on a zebra. I wonder if these two graffitis still exist, as there is a harsh competition for graphic artists in the area, and their works are constantly in danger of being erased or overpainted.

最後に、Whitecross streetとBanner Streetの南東の角にあるグラフィティ（写真下）。南西の角にある、アート・ショップで売られている作品と同じ。Old StreetからWhitecross streetを南下してくると、左右に同じ絵が見れるのが面白い（残念ながら、ショップの方の写真を撮るのを忘れました）。

The last one is a graffiti of a woman at the southeast corner of Whitecross street and Banner Street. An art shop across the street sells the same painting in a frame  – you can see both works on the left and the right if you walk down Whitecross street from Old Street (I forgot to take a photo of the shop…).

Graffitis in My Neighborhood

アーティストたちが多く住むイーストロンドンのハックニー区にある我が家の近くには、グラフィティアート（ストリートアート）がそこかしこで見られる。有名なところでは、ステンシルを使った作品で世界的に知られるストリートアーティスト、バンクシーの「Hoodie」（フード付きスウェットを着た男：イギリスでは不良の代名詞）（写真上）。Shepherdess Walk（シェファーデス・ウォーク）を北上、Regent’s Canal（リージェンツ・カナル）にかかる橋の下にある。またバンクシー作品では、Essex Road（エセックス・ロード）にある薬局の壁に描かれた、テスコのレジ袋を国旗のように掲げて皮肉った「Pledge Your Allegiance / Very Little Helps」（忠誠の誓い/あまりためにならない（テスコのスローガン「Every Little Helps」をもじった）もある。クラーケンウェル（Clerkenwell）にある、Mが愛車のベスパを買ったバイクショップの壁面に描かれていた、時価30万ポンドの「Old Skool」は、たった£1,000で匿名のドイツ人に売られたとニュースで知った。その話をした時に、ショップのオーナーは、「購入者も壁をはがすのに大金がかかったし、誰でも持ってってくれたら良かったんだよ」と笑っていた。欲のない人だ。そのドイツ人は業者を雇い、6週間もかけて壁をはがして、持ち帰ったそうだ。

There are Graffitis here and there in our neighborhood in Hackney, East London, where many artists live. One of the famous one is “Hoodie” (photo above) by famous British graffiti artist Banksy who uses stencils to create his works. You can find it under the bridge over the Regent’s Canal, on the North of the Shepherdess Walk. Another one of Banksy’s work nearby is “Pledge Your Allegiance / Very Little Helps” on the wall of a pharmacy on Essex Road, with two children pledging allegiance to supermarket giant Tesco (the title is a parody of Tesco’s slogan, “Every Little Helps”).  “Old Skool“, worth £300,000, drawn on the wall of a motorcycle shop in Clerkenwell, where M bought his Vespa, was sold it to an anonymous German buyer for only £1,000. When we talked about it with the owner of the shop, he smiled and said “I am glad someone took the painting anyway, and he paid a lots of money for its removal, so it’s fine.” He was not greedy at all! The German hired Wall Paintings Workshop and it took 6 weeks for them to remove the painting.

一番近いのは、Prestwood Street（プレストウッド・ストリート）にある、オーストラリア生まれ・ベルリン在住のChristopher Charlie Isoeの作品（写真上）。マフィアのような男性の顔の上に、ピエロのようなメイクを施している。

The closest graffiti is Australian-born and Berlin-based Christopher Charlie Isoe‘s work on the Prestwood Street – a painting of a Mafioso-look guy with make-up of a clown on the top of his face.

二番目に近いグラフィティ（写真上）。元々はRentokil（レントキル・英ビジネスサービス企業。日本ではカルミックと提携）の事務所だった建物の壁にかかれた、アメリカ人アーティスト、David Choeの作品（敷地内の他の作品：１／２）。つい最近、彼が作品を制作している最中に通りがかったのだけれど、その時はカメラを持っていなくて写真を撮れなかった。彼のブログによると、２日かけて完成させたそう。今日通りかかった時に、ちょうど門の鍵が開いていたので、写真撮影に成功。この前には、ネズミの顔をした、黒の制服を来た警察官（？）が描かれていた（作者不明）。私は前の方が好きだな。写真を撮っておくんだった。

The second closest from us is on the wall of former-Rentokil building, painted by American artist David Choe (photo above. Other works in the same place 1/2). I passed by when he was working on it but I didn’t have my camera that day, but I was lucky today that the gate was open (usually locked) and had my camera with me. He took 2 days to finish the work, according to his blog. Before Choe’s work, there was a painting of 2 rat-face men in black (police?) uniform – I couldn’t find who did it. I prefer the previous work – I should have taken a photo of it.

私は基本的にグラフィティはあんまり好きじゃない。タギングとか、落書きや文字が書いてあるものはどれも似たり寄ったりで個性がないし、なんだかラフすぎて、ティーンエイジャー向けという感じ。でもその中では、元祖ステンシルアーティストのBlek the ratやバンクシーの作品は好き。バンクシーは時に政治メッセージが強すぎると思うけれど。また、Pizza EastやAlbionの近く、Redchurch Street（レッドチャーチ・ストリート）とClub Row（クラブ・ロウ）の角にある、ベルギー人アーティスト・Roaのリスのグラフィティ（写真下）もいい。Roaは、動物の絵をよく描いているようだけれど、同じRedchurch Streetにある豚2匹の顔はちょっと怖い。。。

To be honest, I don’t like graffiti much in general. It tends to be too busy and too much colors, and more or less it looks all the same (especially the writing). It looks too rough and edgy, and is for teenagers to me. However, I kind of like Stencils, such as the works of French Blek the rat, the godfather of stencil graffiti art, and Banksy, though I don’t like his tendency to be too political.  I also like Belgian artist Roa‘s ‘Squirrel’ (photo below), at the corner of Redchurch street and Club Row, near Pizza East and Albion. Roa seems to like to paint animals, but some of them look a bit scary, like the two pigs on top of each other on the same Redchurch street.

グラフィティは、立派なアートだと言う人もいるけれど、無許可であればそれは当然、違法行為。カウンシル（区役所）は、市民からの通報を受け付けていて、通報があれば、48時間以内に調査の上、カウンシル所有の建物に描かれたグラフィティで、不適切なものは24時間以内に、その他のものは14日以内に消去される（ハックニー区の場合）。あのバンクシーの作品の中にも消されたものがいくつかある。カウンシルも必要経費購入者もちで希望者に売って、それを区の財源にすればいいのにね。

Some say graffiti is an art, but if it is done without permission, obviously it is illegal. Borough Councils accept a report of illegal graffiti from public. Once reported, all reports of graffiti will be investigated within 48 hours, and offensive graffiti on buildings owned and run by the Council will be removed within 24 hours of a report being received, and non-offensive graffiti will be removed within 14 days (Borough of Hackney‘s case). Even some of Banksy’s works were erased or painted over due to its illegality – maybe the Councils should sell the graffitis, with removal on buyer’s expense, and get extra money to use for the community’s sake.
