Black Dog Campaign by SANE @ One New Change

One New Changeの1階で見かけた、頭やお尻、そして着ているコートにたくさんのキスマークのついた黒犬の像。これは、メンタルヘルスのチャリティ団体・SANEが、うつ病やメンタルヘルスへの認識を高めるため、「Black Dog Campaign（黒犬キャンペーン）」の一環としてロンドン各地に設置した40体の黒犬の一つ。団体の設立25周年の年に合わせ、昨年7月から今年7月まで行われるこのキャンペーンは、精神疾患の持つネガティブなイメージを払拭し、身体疾患のように誰でもかかる可能性のある病気として一般に認知されることを目的とし、スティーヴン・フライやレイ・デイヴィスなど、自らも精神疾患に悩むセレブなどもサポートしている。

ローマ時代の詩人・ホラティウスによって最初に記されてから、古代から現代に至るまで、黒犬はうつの隠喩として使われており、第二次大戦時の首相・ウィンストン・チャーチルも自らの陰鬱な気分を「黒犬」で表したという。これらの黒犬像は、セレブやアーティスト、一般人がデザインした各々違ったデザインのコートをまとい、首には「collar of hope（希望の首輪）」と呼ばれるSANEのメンタルヘルス・ヘルプラインの情報が記された首輪を着けている。上の写真のキスマーク入りコートは、昔ボンドガールを演じた女優で、最近ではグルカ兵の権利保護を目指したGurkha Justice Campaignで有名な人権運動家・Joanna Lumley（ジョアンナ・ラムレイ）がデザインしたもの。

キャンペーンは「black dog parade（黒犬パレード）」で幕を閉じ、その後犬たちは、メンタルヘルスへの資金集めのためにオークションにかけられる予定。

I spotted this black dog statue, wearing coat with lots of ‘kisses’ (also on his head and buttock), on the ground floor in the One New Change shopping mall. This is one of the 40 black dog sculptures placed across London by mental health charity SANE, as a part of a “Black Dog Campaign” to raise awareness of depression and mental health, running throughout the organisation’s 25th anniversary year from July 2011-July 2012.  The goal of the campaign is to reduce the stigma surrounding mental illness and to normalise it to be perceived like any physical condition. The campaign is backed by celebrities including Stephen Fry, Ray Davies, Clive Anderson and Rory Bremner.

First coined by the Roman poet Horace, the metaphor of the “black dog” for depression has been used from ancient time to the present day, and is adopted by Winston Churchill to describe his darker mood. Each black dog wears a ‘coat’ designed by celebrities, artists and members of the public, along with a ‘collar of hope’ that gives details of SANE’s mental health helpline. The coat in the photo above is designed by Joanna Lumley, British actress and also known as human rights activist who recently involved in the Gurkha Justice Campaign.

The campaign will culminate in a ‘black dog parade’ this year before the dogs are put on auction to raise funds for mental health.

Christmas decoration @ Carluccio’s Cafe

11月に入ってから、街はにわかにクリスマスのデコレーションで埋め尽くされ、もう年の暮れも迫って来ているのかと、ちょっと憂鬱になる。今日ランチに行った「Carluccio’s（カルルッチョズ）」でも、クリスマスらしい商品が店頭に並んでいた。Carluccio’sの今年のクリスマス用パッケージは、伝統的なモチーフを使いつつ、モダンに仕上げていて、なかなか洗練されている。店内のカフェ・レストランエリアにも、イタリアのクリスマスには必須のPanettone（パネットーネ）やPandoro（パンドーロ）、またイタリア菓子のAmaretti（アマレッティ）などが山積みされているが、パッケージが素敵なので、良いデコレーションになっている。

1999年にオープンしたCarluccio’sは、イタリア出身のシェフで食のエキスパートでもある、Antonio Carluccio（アントニオ・カルルッチョ）とその妻でサー・テレンス・コンランの妹、Priscilla（プリシラ）が手がけた、フードショップ併設のイタリアンレストランのチェーンで、全国に40店以上展開している。カラフルな店内は明るくていいんだけれど、インテリアが少し時代遅れで、ちょっとファミレスっぽいかも。チェーンだからというわけではないけれど、味はまあ普通。自分的には、すごく美味しいという程ではないけれど、イタリアンが食べたい時に、近くに目ぼしいレストランがなければ行くところ、という位置づけかな。今日は、シチリア風アランチーニ（イタリア風ライスコロッケ）を食べたけれど、味があまりなく、添えられいていたpepolataソース（赤ピーマンのソース）も不味かった。でも、パスタはまあまあいける。Penne alla Luganica (ペンネのスパイシー・イタリアン・ソーセージのソース和え）はなかなか美味しかったそうだ。食後のドリンクは、Cioccolata Fiorentina（チョッコラータ・フィオレンティーナ）。これはエスプレッソ用のデミタスに入ったドロドロのホットチョコレートで、かなり濃い。でも。ちょっと甘い物が食べたいけれど、ケーキまではちょっと、という時には、ちょうどいいかも。Mは、Carluccio’sはイタリアンらしからず、エスプレッソが今イチなのが不満だそうだ。

カルルッチョ氏は鬱を患っておられるらしく、2008年9月にはキッチンナイフで自分の胸を刺し、その後精神病クリニックに入院したそうだ。72歳と言うお年だし、どんよりした天気のイギリスにいても落ち込むだけのような気がするので、いっそ故郷のイタリアに帰った方が状況が良くなるかもしれないね。

Since the month turned to November, you see the Christmas decoration all over the city – it makes me realize how fast time passes and makes me feeling a bit blue. Carluccio’s, where we had lunch today, also stacked up Christmas products such as Panettone and Pandoro on the store windows. This years’ Carluccio’s Christmas packages are sophisticatedly designed with traditional motif with modern touch. These products are also used as a decoration in the restaurant area and it looks fine, as the package design is pretty nice.

Carluccio’s is a British chain of Italian restaurants with integrated food shops, and operates in over 40 locations nationwide. The chain was founded in 1999 by Italian chef and food expert Antonio Carluccio and his wife Priscilla, who is a younger sister of Sir Terence Conran. The interior of the restaurant is colorful but a bit out of date and not the hippest place in town, and smells like a chain, like Starbucks. It is not a Michelin star restaurant and their food is OK, but we go once in a while when there is no decent restaurant around and we feel like Italian. Today I ordered Arancini di riso Siciliani (Sicilian style rice balls), but it had no taste and its red pepper sauce tasted bad. But their pastas are better, according to M. M’s Penne alla Luganica with spicy Italian sausage sauce was not bad at all. Cioccolata Fiorentina (thick hot chocolate served in an espresso cup) after the meal was good. It is perfect when you want something sweet but don’t want to have a big cake. M complained that their espresso is up to scratch for Italian standard.

It was said that Mr. Carluccio was suffering from depression. It was reported that he stabbed himself in the chest with a kitchen knife in September 2008, and has since admitted himself in to the psychiatric hospital in London. He is now 72 years old and it may be a good idea for him to retire and come back to his home country Italy for his sake – it may not help to stay in London with this depressive weather…
