Bruno Munari: My Futurist Past @ Estorick Collection of Modern Italian Art

イズリントンにあるEstorick Collection of Modern Italian Artで12月23日まで開催中の「Bruno Munari: My Futurist Past」は、多彩な才能を発揮したイタリア人アーティスト＆デザイナー、ブルーノ・ムナーリの、初期から戦後にかけての作品を集めた展覧会。

ムナーリは、「Futurist past」と呼び自身のルーツとする、未来派ムーブメントの中でキャリアをスタート。未来派は、絵画に留まらず、モンタージュ写真、彫刻、グラフィックス、映像、アート理論など、手法や分野を超えたムナーリの作品作りにインスピレーションを与えた。彼の作品は、未来派に留まらず、構成主義、ダダイスム、シュルレアリスムなど様々なアートムーブメントの影響も見て取れる。またムナーリは、イタリア抽象芸術の発展を促し、アートとテクノロジー、創造性、機能性を融合させる「synthesis of arts（アートの統合）」を希求するため、1948年にミラノで興ったイタリアの具体芸術ムーブメント・Movimento Arte Concreta（MAC）の創立メンバーの一人でもある。

この展覧会では、工業的なモビールやオブジェ、おもちゃの猿「Zizi（ジジ）」、戦闘機や産業をテーマにしたモノクロのモンタージュ写真、ボールペンやローマ・オリンピックのポスター、カラフルな壁紙やテキスタイル・デザイン、コラージュ、絵画等々、ムナーリの大いなるクリエイティビティを反映した多種多様な作品を見る事が出来る。それらの作品は、今見てもモダンで遊び心があり、全然時代遅れになっていない。小規模だけれど、お薦めの展覧会。

“Bruno Munari: My Futurist Past” (until December 23, 2012) at Estorick Collection of Modern Italian Art in Islington, is the exhibition that traces multi-talented Italian artist and designer, Bruno Munari‘s career from its early years up to the post-war period.

Munari began his career within the Futurist movement, and the roots of his work lay in what he termed his ‘Futurist past’. The movement inspired him to work across a range of media and disciplines from painting to photomontage, sculpture, graphics, film and art theory. Yet his influences were varied, also reflecting the aesthetics and sensibilities of movements such as Constructivism, Dada and Surrealism. He was also a founding member of the Movimento Arte Concreta (MAC), the Italian movement for concrete art established in Milan in 1948. This acted as a catalyst for new developments in Italian abstraction, and aspired to bring about a ‘synthesis of arts’, demonstrating the possibility of a convergence of art and technology, creativity and functionality.

The exhibition shows us that Munari’s multi-faceted creativity in diverse works from industrial-looking mobiles and sculptures to “Zizi the Monkey” child toys, from photomontages of war planes to biro or Rome olympic posters, as well as wallpapers, textile designs, and playful collages, and colourful paintings. And his works are modern, inspiring, fun and not obsolete still now. Recommended.

Benetton Oxford Circus Store Reopens

オックスフォード・ストリート辺りでショッピングする時に、立ち寄るお店の一つ、ベネトンのオックスフォード・サーカス店。高品質の生地を使った、エレガントでスタイリッシュなイタリアン・デザインの服がお手頃な価格で買える、ベネトン・グループのお姉さんブランド・シスレー（Sisley）が、お気に入りだ。店は改装工事のためにしばらく閉店していたが、先週19日に再オープンした（詳細）。

新しい装いのオックスフォード・サーカス店は、イタリア人建築家でデザイナーのピエロ・リッソーニがデザインを担当。19世紀の建物を、都会的で洗練された、ミニマリズム的空間に仕上げた。ベネトンの計画では、2009年のイスタンブール店を皮切りに、世界主要都市にあるベネトン旗艦店を、リッソーニとのコラボレーションで徐々に改装するそうで、オックスフォード・サーカス店もその一環。この計画によると各店のデザインは、その都市の文化を反映したものになるという。リッソーニによると、ロンドン店は「白黒を基調に、自然光、すっきりした線や形、シンプルな材料を使った、クリーンで上品なデザインを目指した」という。店内のレイアウトもゆったりしており、ロンドンのど真ん中だというのに、ゆっくり買い物できる。

ベネトンは、決して高級ブランドではないけれど、インテリアが素敵になると、置いてある商品まで洗練されて見えるから不思議だ。

The Benetton Oxford Circus store is one of our favorite stores and we often stop by the store when we go to Oxford Street. The store closed temporarily for renovation, but reopens on August 19th last week (details).  We like Sisley, the Benetton group’s high-fashion brand, as we can find elegant and stylish Italian-design clothes using good quality materials at affordable price.

The newly revamped Oxford Circus store is designed by Italian architect and designer Piero Lissoni, and he transformed this 19th-century building to a minimalist and sleek urban-chic space. The renovation of its Oxford Circus store is a part of an overhaul plan of Benetton’s flagship stores in world’s major cities, launched in Istanbul in 2009. With this plan, each store expresses the local culture. Piero Lissoni said,“For the London store, we wanted a clean and refined design using simple mediums: natural light, plain materials, clean lines and shapes, black, white”. The store layout is quite spacious, and you can shop at ease in the middle of chaotic Oxford Circus.

Benetton is not upscale brand, but their clothing range looks more sophisticated as its interior has been upgraded. I guess the store make-over really works.

Candid Café @ Angel, Islington

ロープが絡まった白馬が突き出ている、何だか怪しげな外観のCandid Café。チューブのエンジェル駅の裏側、City RoadとUpper Streetの交差点の少し東のTorrens Streetにある、ビクトリア時代の倉庫だったCandid Arts Trustの建物の2階（日本の3階。イギリスではGround Floor/地階から数え、1階、2階と続く）にある。アートとアート教育の促進、そして卒業後1年以内の新進アーティストやデザイナーに展示の場を与えることを目的としたCandid Arts Trustは、展示スペース、2つのギャラリー、そして20のアーティストのアトリエや、会議やイベントなどを行える貸しスペースを備えている。

Candid Caféは、よく言えばアート的でボヘミアン、悪く言えばちょっと悪趣味。使い古した木のテーブルや床、そして陽の光が注ぐ壁際の席は、いい感じなのだけれど、奥のギリシャ風の柱や壁にかけられた裸体画などは品がなく、赤く塗られた壁が薄暗く感じさせる。

「Mediterranian food（地中海料理）」を謳う食べ物は今イチ。ちゃんとした食事はしたことがないけれど、サンドイッチが不味かったから、そう確信している。ケーキ類も大味で大甘。Mいわくエスプレッソも不味いそうだ。こういうと救いはないようだけれど、天気がいい昼下がりに壁際に座って、お茶（あくまでお茶で、コーヒーではない）するのにはいい。また、真向かいにあるジムのクラスまでの時間つぶしにもね。

Candid Café’s tasteless exterior, white horse tangled with rope coming out from the wall and hideous signed board, may turn you off to come inside. Situated on Torrens Street behind the Angel tube station in Islington, on the east of the intersection of City Road and Upper street, Candid Café is on the second floor (third floor in US – first floor is called “ground floor”, following first floor in UK) in one of the two Victorian warehouses converted into an arts centre of the Candid Arts Trust. Aiming to promote the arts and arts education with special emphasis placed on helping newly graduated artists and designers, the Candid Arts Trust has exhibition space, two galleries, 20 artists studios, as well as banqueting, conference and screening rooms, rehearsal spaces.

In good terms, Candid Café is arty and boho, but in bad terms, grungy and vulgar. Rusty wooden tables and floors, and window side seats with lots of light are quite nice, but gloomy red walls and tasteless fake greek column and nude painting (photo below) destroy these good.

Their “Mediterranian food” is not impressive – I haven’t had their mains but I believe this, as their sandwich was quite bad and their cakes were too sweet. Their espresso was below average as well, according to M. Sounds no hope, but it is pleasant to sit on a window side table when it’s sunny and have a cup of tea (tea, not coffee). Also I go sometimes to kill my time before going to my gym class, just across the street.

SMUG Lifestyle Store @ Camden Passage

SMUGは、エンジェルの有名なアンティーク・ストリート、カムデン・パッセージにある小さなお店。前は通ったことがあるのだけれど、今日、Daily Candyのメールマガジンで紹介されたのを機に、行ってみた。センス良く飾られた、白やパステルカラーのレトロな家具が並ぶ2フロアの店内には、手作りのぬいぐるみ、クッション、ティータオル（洗い物を拭く布巾）、そしてミッドセンチュリーの食器類やグラス等、オーナーで、インテリア／グラフィック・デザイナーのLizzie EvansがデザインしたSMUGブランドや、自身がセレクトした、女性が好きそうなものが所狭しと並んでいる。今日は取りあえず、素敵なデザインのオリジナルカード（1枚£2.50）を2枚買った。自分用にはちょっと値段が高いかな、と思うものもあるけれど、ちょっと気の利いたプレゼントを探すのに使えそう。

ちなみにDaily Candyは、お店やレストラン、イベント、セールなど、タウン情報を発信するウェブサービスで、ニューヨークやロス等アメリカの主要11都市の他、ロンドン版がある。サイトに登録、好きな都市を選ぶと、月曜から金曜日まで毎日メールマガジンが届く。ロンドン情報を手に入れるのにとても便利なサイト。

SMUG is a cosy lifestyle store on Camden Passage, a famous antique street in Angel. I passed by some times, but I went inside for the first time, as Daily Candy talked about the store today. Inside of 2-floor store, chicly decorated with retro furniture in white or pastel colors, is full of goodies that women love – handmade soft animals, cushions, tea towels, mid-century glassware and kitchenware etc – designed or carefully selected by the owner and interior/graphic designer Lizzie Evans. I bought two cute cards today (£2.50@). Though some of the products are bit pricy for myself, it is a great place to find an unique and sophisticated present for your loved ones.

Daily Candy is a web service, delivering what’s going on in the city of your choice – restaurants, stores, services, events, sale and everything– via daily e-mail newsletter and its website. Currently the service covers 11 major US cities such as New York and LA, as well as London, the only city outside USA. Daily Candy is very useful for me o get an idea for my blog, as well as to look for a nice place to hang out.

Decode: Digital Design Sensations @ V&A

ヴィクトリア&アルバート博物館（V&A）で8日から始まった、Decode: Digital Design Sensations（〜2010年4月11日）。デジタルアーツ複合組織で、クロスメディアの製作会社であるonedotzero（ワン・ドット・ゼロ）と共同企画された「Decode（解読）」は、Daniel Brown（ダニエル・ブラウン）、 Golan Levin（ゴラン・レヴィン）、 Daniel Rozin（ダニエル・ローズィン）、 Troika（トロイカ）、 Karsten Schmidt（カーステン・シュミット）など、国際的に有名なアーティストやデザイナーの、小さなスクリーンのグラフィック作品から大規模なインタラクティブ・インスタレーションまで、最新のデジタルアートやインタラクティブ・デザインを展示。作品は、コンピュータのコードを使って創り出された「Code（コード）」、ビジターの動きや仕草に反応して変化する「Interactivity（インタラクティブな双方向的コミュニケーション）」、そして最新のテクノロジーや日常生活のコミュニケーションで使われるネットワークシステム（インターネットやメール等）を利用した「Network（ネットワーク）」の3つのテーマに分かれている。

現代のテクノロジーを駆使した作品を集めたこの「Decode」は、先週のオープンした何百年も前の美術品のコレクションであるMedieval & Renaissance Galleriesと対照的だ。まあ好き嫌いはあるとしても、私は結構好き。「Network」の作品はずっと見ていたら頭がクラクラしそうなものもあるし、「Code」はカラフルすぎたり、コンピュータオタクが気合い入れて作りました的な作品が多いけれど（でもTroikaのDigital Zoetrope／デジタル式回転のぞき絵は好き）、「Interactivity」の作品はかなり楽しめる。大の大人が前で飛んだり跳ねたり、カメラの前で変な顔をしたり、人を見ているだけでも面白い。私のお気に入りは、前にいる人のシルエットが映るダニエル・ローズィンの「Weave Mirror（編まれた鏡）」（後ろついているたくさんのワイヤも見えるようになっている）や、先っぽについた電球が花のように見えるDaan Roosegaarde（ダーン・ローズガールデ）の「Dune」です。

New exhibition of Victoria & Albert Museum, Decode: Digital Design Sensations (Dec 8.09 – Apr 11.10). Curated in collaboration with leading digital arts organization onedotzero, Decode displays the latest developments in digital art and interactive design, from small screen graphics to large-scale interactive installations, by prominent international artists and designers such as Daniel Brown, Golan Levin, Daniel Rozin, Troika and Karsten Schmidt. The exhibition explores three themes: Code presents pieces that use computer code to create new designs; Interactivity shows works that are directly influenced by the viewer and visitors can interact with the displays; and Network focuses on works made by means of advanced technologies and ‘networks’, everyday communications such as internet and e-mails.

This exhibition which is dedicated to modern technology makes a big contrast with last week’s opening of new Medieval & Renaissance Galleries. You may like or not, I was quite impressed: some works in the Network section made me dizzy with lines, dots and stuffs, and the Code themed pieces were too colorful and geeky (Digital Zoetrope by Troika is pretty cool, though), but the Interactivity part was pretty fun. I also enjoyed looking at grown-up adults jumping up and down or making funny face in front of the camera. My favorite works are Weave Mirror by Daniel Rozin; silhouettes of the people in front of it reflects on weaved shiny plates – you can see hundreds of wires on the back of it,  and Dune by Daan Roosegaarde, which looks like a lot of flowers gleaming in the dark – very superb.
