BT ArtBox: Celebrating A British Icon

英大手電気通信事業者・BTが主催、虐待やいじめ、両親の離婚などに悩む子供たちを電話相談を通じてサポートする慈善団体「ChildLine（チャイルドライン）」の設立25年を記念するパブリック・アート・エキシビション「BT ArtBox」が、現在ロンドンで開催中だ。このプロジェクトには、建築家のザハ・ハディッド、ファッション・デザイナーのジャイルズ・ディーコン（Giles Deacon）、ザンドラ・ローズ（Zandra Rhodes）、ジュリアン・マクドナルド（Julien Macdonald）、アーティストのロブ＆ニック・カーター（Rob and Nick Carter）、ライアン・カラナン（Ryan Callanan：写真最上）、マーティン・ウェア（Martyn Ware）、彫刻家のデヴィッド・マック（David Mach）、インテリアデザイナーのニナ・キャンベル（Nina Campbell）、ミュージシャンのニック・ローズ（デュラン・デュラン）、マキシム（ザ・プロディジー）などの著名クリエイターたちが参加。イギリスのアイコンの一つである赤い電話ボックスと同サイズのレプリカを使って創られた80以上のアート作品が、6月15日にトラファルガー広場に1日集結、その後6月18日から7月16日まで、コヴェントガーデンやセント・パンクラス駅、カーナビー・ストリート、ハイド・パーク、水族館のサメの水槽などといった、ロンドンの名所や街角に設置、通行人の目を楽しませている（ロケーション・マップ / 写真：Telegraph紙）。

展示終了後は、イーベイとサザビーズでオークションにかけられ、売上げはChildLineに寄付される予定（詳細）。ロンドンでは今までも、Black Dog Campaign、Big Egg Hunt、Elephant Paradeなど、同じような有名人参加のチャリティ・アート・プロジェクトがいくつも行われている。

BT ArtBox is a public art exhibition, celebrating 25 years of ChildLine, who has been helping vulnerable children since 1986. More than 80 full-size replicas of one of the British icons, the red telephone box, are redesigned into artworks by leading artists and designers, including architect Zaha Hadid; fashion designers Giles Deacon, Zandra Rhodes and Julien Macdonald; artists Rob and Nick Carter, Ryan Callanan and Martyn Ware; sculptor David Mach; interior designer Nina Campbell; Duran Duran’s Nick Rhodes and The Prodigy’s Maxim (more photos: Telegraph).

The project launched on June 15 when a selection of BT ArtBoxes were on display in Trafalgar Square for the day. From June 18 to July 16, BT ArtBoxes are showcased across London’s streets and landmark locations, such as Covent Garden, St Pancras Station, Carnaby Street, Hyde Park and even the shark tank at the London Aquarium (location map). Then, all the boxes will be auctioned off through eBay and Sotheby’s to raise money for ChildLine’s 25th anniversary (more info). London has hosted similar charity art projects helped by celebrities and creators every now and then, such as the Black Dog Campaign, the Big Egg Hunt, and the Elephant Parade.

ある日、リージェント・ストリート近くでショーケースに入った大きな卵を見かけた。これは、「 Action for Children 」と「Elephant Family」という二つのチャリティ団体のための募金キャンペーン「The Big Egg Hunt / Faberge Big Egg Hunt」（スポンサーは宝石店のFaberge / ファベルジェ）の一環で、ロンドン各地に隠された200以上の巨大卵の一つ。ファイバーグラスで出来た高さ１mのこれらの卵は、アーティストやデザイナー、建築家、宝石細工人によって彩られた（卵のリスト）。

2010年のElephant Paradeに続き、カミラ夫人 （コーンウォール公爵夫人）の息子でフード・ライターの Tom Parker Bowles（トム・パーカー・ボウルズ）が、2011年11月にセレブリティが出席する「Eggs Faberge」スペシャル朝食会を開催したことをきっかけに、Big Egg Huntのコンセプトが誕生した。

この最大級のEaster egg hunt（イースター・エッグ探し）は、2月21日から開始。このイベントに参加すると、60もの宝石が埋め込まれた10万ポンド相当の18金の卵「Diamond Jubilee Egg」が当たるチャンスあり。参加方法は、各卵のケースに記されているキーワードをテキスト（80001）で送るだけ。1つの卵につきエントリーは1回のみなので、たくさん探せば探すほど、当たる確立は高くなる。12に分かれたzone maps（イベントマップ）はオンラインで入手可能。

展示されている卵は、「eggsclusive auctions」（exclusiveとeggをかけている）で手に入れることができる。約30の卵が3月21日のライブ・オークションにかけられ、残りはオンライン・オークションで販売される予定（4月9日まで入札受付）。オークションには手が出ないという人は、Selfridges（セルフリッジズ）デパートにあるThe Big Egg Shopで、手描きのミニチュアエッグやオイスターカード・ケース、トートバッグ、Paint-Your-Own-Egg packs（手描きキット）を買うことも出来る。売上げは全てElephant FamilyとAction for Childrenに寄付される予定。

One night, I spot a big egg in a show case on a street near Regent street. This is  is one of over 200 giant eggs hidden across London, placed by a charity fundraising campaign “The Big Egg Hunt” or the “Faberge Big Egg Hunt“, in aid of Action for Children and Elephant Family, and sponsored by the jeweller Faberge. These meter high fibreglass eggs have been created by artists, designers, architects and jewellers (list of eggs).

Following the 2010 Elephant Parade, the Big Egg Hunt was first launched in November 2011 by a son of  Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall and food writer Tom Parker Bowles, who created a special “Eggs Faberge” breakfast for the celebrities in attendance.

This largest ever Easter egg hunt launched on 21 February 2012. By participating the egg hunt, you can win an exclusive Diamond Jubilee Egg with 60 fine gems encrusted on this 18 carat gold egg, worth over £100,000! Each egg has a unique keyword at its location, and text this word to 80001 to enter (entries are open until April 3rd). 12 zone maps are available online. You can entry once for each egg, so the more eggs you find, the greater chance you will get to win the prize.

You can be the owner of one of these eggs through their “eggsclusive auctions“; around 30 of the eggs are to be auctioned on March 20, and the others are being auctioned online, with bids closing at 5pm on April 9. If you cannot afford to buy on auction, you can also get the egg goodies including hand-painted miniatures of the Big Egg Hunt eggs, Oyster wallets, tote bags, and Paint-Your-Own-Egg packs at The Big Egg Shop at Selfridges. All profit go to the charities Elephant Family and Action for Children.

This is what I saw. It is made by a sculptor and President of the Society of Wildlife Artists, Harriet Mead. I checked her egg on the website, but I didn’t see the lizard and glass hopper on the actual egg??

Elephant Parade London 2010

May Day Bank Holiday（メーデー明けの月曜日。イギリスの祝日）の5月3日から始まった、Elephant Parade London 2010（エレファント・パレード・ロンドン2010）。アーティストやデザイナー、セレブたちによってペインティングを施された、実物大の赤ちゃん象260体がロンドンのあちこちに設置されている。

ロンドンの屋外でのアート・イベントとして過去最大となるエレファント・パレードは、絶滅の危機に瀕しているアジアゾウを救うためのチャリティ・イベント。ロンドンの前はオランダでも開催された。同様の慈善アート・イベントとしては、東京でも何度か行われた、2002年のCow Parade London（カウ・パレード）がある。

参加者は、デザイナーのTommy Hilfiger（トミー・ヒルフィガー）、Paul Smith（ポール・スミス）、Diane von Furstenberg（ダイアン・フォン・ファステンバーグ）、Julien MacDonald（ジュリアン・マクドナルド）、Matthew Williamson（マシュー・ウィリアムソン）、Lulu Guinness（ルル・ギネス）、アーティストのMarc Quinn（マーク・クイン）そしてSir Terence Conran（テレンス・コンラン）など。またイギリス王室の一員である、マイケル・オブ・ケント王子ご夫妻も参加されている。時には、歩き疲れた観光客や飲食の椅子代わりになったりしているけれど、これらのカラフルな子象たちは、愛嬌のある表情に可愛いポーズで、道行く人々の目を楽しませている。→もっと写真を見たい方はこちらをクリック。

6月22日までは、バッキンガム宮殿、国会議事堂前のパーラメント・スクエア、コヴェント・ガーデン、サウスバンク等、ロンドンの主な観光地の周辺に置かれるが、その後チェルシーにあるChelsea Royal Hospital（チェルシー王立病院：イギリス兵のための老人ホーム。RHSチェルシー・フラワー・ショーの会場にもなっている）に集められ、6月23日から7月2日まで一般公開。7月3日にはSotheby’s（サザビーズ）でオークションにかけられる。主催者は200万ポンドの売上を見込んでおり、その売上金は主催者のElephant Familyとアジアで活動する20のイギリスの保護団体に分配される予定。

ミニチュアの象は、デパートのSelfridgesや80 Regent St、36 Carnaby Street, and Greenwich Central Marketのお店の他、エレファント・パレードのオンラインショップで買える。

Elephant Parade London 2010 started on May 3, a May Day Bank Holiday, and 260 colorful life-size baby elephants, painted by artists, designers and celebrities, are located over central London during the event period.

Elephant Parade is a conservation campaign, similar to Cow Parade London in 2002, and aims at raising awareness of the urgent crisis faced by the endangered Asian elephant. This is London’s biggest outdoor art event on record, and the elephants have ‘paraded’ in Netherlands before London.

The participating artists include designer Tommy Hilfiger, Sir Paul Smith, Diane von Furstenberg, Julien MacDonald, Matthew Williamson, Lulu Guinness, Sir Terence Conran, and artist Marc Quinn, as well as HRH Prince and Princess Michael of Kent. Though sculptures are sometimes used as a resting point for exhausted tourists or a place to have a snack, but generally passersby appreciate these work of art, adore its cute face or gesture, or enjoy taking a picture. → For more picture, click here.

The elephants will stay at around major London landmarks including Buckingham Palace, Parliament Square, Covent Garden and the South Bank until June 22, and will be put all together in Chelsea Royal Hospital (retirement home and nursing home for British soldiers and the site of the annual Chelsea Flower Show) for public viewing from June 23 to July 2. On July 3, all of the elephants will be auctioned at Sotherby’s, aiming to raise £2 million to help the Elephant Family charity and 20 UK conservation charities working in Asia.

Carnaby Street 50th Anniversary

2010年は、カーナビー・ストリート（Carnaby Street）の50周年記念の年。60年代に、モッズやヒッピー・ファッションの中心地であったカーナビー・ストリートに、独立系のブティックやデザイナーたちが店を構え、また周辺の通りには、様々なアングラのミュージック・バーがあった。Wardour Streetの角にあった伝説的なクラブ・Marquee Clubでは、ビートルズやザ・フー、ローリング・ストーンズなどが演奏し、彼らがたむろしたカーナビー・ストリートは、スウィンギング・ロンドンで、もっともクールな場所になった。

今もカーナビー・ストリートは、ロンドンの代表的なショッピング・ストリートの一つで、いつも観光客や若者で賑わっている。メイン・ストリートであるカーナービー・ストリートや周辺の小さな通り、Kingly court（キングリー・コート）、Newburgh Quarter（ニューバーグ・クォーター）など一帯には、ファッションや靴などのショップなどのほか、カフェやバー、パブ、レストランが並ぶ。

50周年を記念し、2010年は1年を通して、ファッションやデザイン、音楽に関連したイベントやフェスティバルが行われる予定。写真は、2月から開催されている展覧会で、カーナビー・ストリートの16世紀から現在までの歴史、特に60年代を中心に解説している。空き店舗を利用したと思われるこの展覧会は、ちょっと薄暗〜い感じで展示品のサイズも小さく、スペースを有効利用できてない感じ。写真もファッションも、もっとたくさん展示してほしかった。でも奥の左にあるブースでやっている、カーナビー・ストリートの歴史のビデオはなかなか面白い。

Year 2010 is Carnaby Street‘s 50th Anniversary. By the 1960s, Carnaby Street became an iconic fashion destination for he Mod and hippie styles. Many independent fashion boutiques and designers were located as well as various underground music bars in the surrounding streets. With bands such as The Beatles, The Who, and Rolling Stones appeared in the area to work with the legendary Marquee Club located round the corner in Wardour Street, and shopped and socialized, it became one of Swinging London‘s coolest destination.

Today Carnaby Street is still one of the main shopping street in London and attracts many young people and tourists. The area including main Carnaby Street and surrounding streets as well as Kingly court and the Newburgh Quarter, offers fashion stores and boutiques as well as cafés, bars, pubs and restaurants.

Throughout 2010, Carnaby streets will host various events and festivals featuring fashion, design and music. Kicking off in February with an exhibition which includes a detailed history of the area, from the 16th Century to the present day, especially focusing on the sixties. This exhibition, using an empty store space, is a bit dark and the materials exhibited are rather too small. There is a big unused space in the middle and I wish they can show us more its iconic fashions and photos. However, I quite enjoyed the video being played on the back, showing the history of the street, especially during the hype in 60’s.

Van Doesburg and the International Avant-Garde @ Tate Modern

テート・モダンの「Van Doesburg and the International Avant-Garde」は、ヨーロッパにおけるアバンギャルドの重要人物であるオランダ人アーティスト、テオ・ファン・ドースブルフをテーマとした、イギリス初の大規模な展覧会。デ・ステイルの発起人でもあるファン・ドースブルフは、アート、デザイン、著作活動、詩、建築等多方面で活躍した。アーティスト、建築家、デザイナーたちが参加したこのアート・ムーブメントは、第一次大戦後のヨーロッパに、精神的ハーモニーと秩序を打ち立てると言う新しいユートピア的な理想を追求、垂直と水平という厳密な幾何学をベースにしたインターナショナル・スタイルを押し進めた。この展覧会は、ファン・ドースブルフのオランダ新造形主義の推進者的役割、彼のダダイスト的パーソナリティ、バウハウスへの影響、国際構成主義とのつながり、そして「コンクリート・アート」グループの創設にスポットを当てている。ジャン・アルプ、コンスタンティン・ブランクーシ、モホリ＝ナジ・ラースロー、ピエト・モンドリアン、フランシス・ピカビア、ヘリット・リートフェルト、クルト・シュヴィッタース、ゾフィー・トイバー等の350点以上の作品の他、ファン・ドースブルフの、ストラスブールにあるCafé Aubetteの絵画とデザイン、家具、タイポグラフィー、雑誌、ステンドグラス、映画、音楽、彫刻等を展示している。

ドースブルフのアート自体は、少し暗い感じで線も弱く、特段印象に残っていないのだが、計11室に渡る、デ・ステイルに影響を受けた、偉大なアーティストたちの多彩な作品群には圧倒される。当時のライフスタイルと考え方にに大きな影響を与えたアートムーブメントに連なる、シンプルだけれどカラフルで、インパクトのある作品たちは、80年以上近くも前のものと思えないほどモダンで、古さを感じない。第一次世界大戦と第二次世界大戦の合間という激動の時代の最中にあって、新たな理想を打ち立てたアーティストやデザイナー、建築家たちの強いエネルギーと情熱が、今でも強く感じられる。ファン・ドースブルフは、モンドリアンをはじめとする仲間と比べて、アーティストとしてはさほど高い評価を受けていないけれど、リーダーシップを発揮し、彼の理想をヨーロッパ中に広め、ムーブメントの成功につなげたことが、彼の偉大な功績だと言えるだろう。

“Van Doesburg and the International Avant-Garde” at Tate Modern is the first major UK exhibition, devoted to the Dutch artist Theo van Doesburg, pivotal figure of the European avant-garde. Van Doesburg, who practiced in art, design and writing, poetry and architecture, founded the movement and magazine De Stijl. This artistic movement of painters, architects and designers sought to build a new utopian ideal of spiritual harmony and order in the aftermath of World War I, advocating an international style of art and design, based on a strict geometry of horizontals and verticals. This exhibition explores van Doesburg’s role as promoter of Dutch Neoplasticism, his Dada personality, his efforts to influence the Bauhaus, his links with international Constructivists, and his creation of the group Art Concret. Including over 350 works by key artists as Jean Arp, Constantin Brancusi, László Moholy-Nagy, Piet Mondrian, Francis Picabia, Gerrit Rietveld, Kurt Schwitters and Sophie Taeuber, the exhibition features van Doesburg’s Counter-Composition paintings and designs for the Café Aubette in Stasbourg, as well as furniture, typography, magazines, stained glass, film, music, sculpture etc.

Van Doesburg’s works are kind of gloomy and weak, and I was not so impressed. But the exhibition includes a variety of works by great artists and designers who were influenced by the movement, is quite spectacular. Simple, colorful, and powerful works are still modern and strong, after more than 80 years – I can still feel the energy, and passion of the artists and designers of the art movement that affected the lifestyle and values during the period in turmoil between WWI and WWII. Although van Doesburg had never gained high recognition as an artist in compare to his fellowmen such as Mondrian, but his leadership and efforts to spread his ideal to whole Europe, which led the movement to great success, are the significant achievement that deserves great recognition.
