A Day in Cardiff, Wales

オリンピック女子サッカー準々決勝を見に行った際、せっかくの機会なのでカーディフに1泊し、翌日市内観光した。

人口約32万人のカーディフへは、ロンドン・パディントン駅から西へ電車で２時間ちょっと。カーディフは石炭の積み出し港として発展し、1955年にウェールズの首都となった。イギリスを構成する4つの「国（country）」のひとつであるウェールズは、ケルト系の文化・言語と強いアイデンティティを持つ。ウェールズでは、ウェールズ語が英語と並んで公用語とされ、道路標識や公文書は2言語で表記されている。中北部を中心に人口の21.7%（2004年調べ）がウェールズ語を話すことができるらしいが、カーディフ市内ではウェールズ語は文字では見るものの、全く耳にはしなかった。

When we went to see the Olympic women’s football quarter final in Cardiff, we stayed over night and enjoyed sightseeing the day after.

It takes just a little bit more than two hours to go to Cardiff by train from London Paddington station. Cardiff became prosper as a major port for the transport of coal in the early 19th century, and became the capital of Wales in 1955. Wales is one of the four ‘countries’ in UK, and it has retained a distinct cultural identity and is officially bilingual with English and Welsh. The Welsh Language Board indicated in 2004 that 21.7% of the population of Wales were able to speak the language, but I had never heard anybody speaking Welsh in Cardiff, though I saw the signage written in two languages.

カーディフの主な見所はカーディフ城とカーディフ・ベイ地区。市中心部にあるカーディフ城は、紀元1世紀に造られた古代ローマ人の砦に起源し、ノルマン征服後に再び要塞が築かれた。現在の建物は、19世紀に石炭の輸出で富を得た第3代ビュート侯が、建築家ウィリアム・バージェスに設計を依頼、ネオゴシック様式の外観を持ち、豪華絢爛なアラブルームやステンドグラスが美しいウィンタースモーキングルーム等、さまざまな意匠をこらした部屋が見学できる。

Major tourist attractions in Cardiff are Cardiff Castle and Cardiff Bay. Cardiff Castle is situated in the heart of the city centre. The castle is a medieval castle and Victorian architecture Gothic revival mansion, transformed from a Norman keep erected over a Roman fort. The castle substantially altered and extended during the Victorian period by John Crichton-Stuart, 3rd Marquess of Bute, and the architect William Burges.

カーディフ・ベイは石炭の積出港・旧波止波周辺地域を再開発した地区で、セーリングやウォータースポーツが楽しめる淡水湖や、アートセンター、ホテル、レストランなどが集まる新しい観光スポットになっている。中心部から10〜15分おきに出ているバス6番で約10〜15分ほど。

Cardiff Bay is the new tourist destination where old Cardiff docklands have been redeveloped in the last decade, and home to a large freshwater lake for sailing and water sports as well as restaurants and hotels. It is about 10-15 minutes by bus no.6, running every 10-15 minutes, from the city center.

Welsh National Opera（ウェールズ国立オペラ団）の本拠地で、バレエやダンス、ミュージカル、コメディなどが催される、Wales Millennium Centre（ウェールズ・ミレニアム・センター）。愛称「Armadillo（アルマジロ）」。正面には、センターがウェールズ出身の作曲家、カール・ジェンキンスに委託して作られた曲名「Creu Gwir Fel Gwydr O Ffwrnais Awen（ウェールズ語 / 英語では In These Stones Horizons Sing）」くりぬかれている。

Locally nicknamed “the Armadillo”, the Wales Millennium Centre is home to the Welsh National Opera and has hosted performances of opera, ballet, dance, comedy and musicals. On its facade, you can read “Creu Gwir Fel Gwydr O Ffwrnais Awen” in Welsh, or In These Stones Horizons Sing in English, which is the name of a work for chorus and orchestra composed by Welsh composer Karl Jenkins, which was commissioned for the opening of the Wales Millennium Centre.

1897年に建設されたPierheadは、Bute Dock Companyがあった建物 / The Pierhead, built in 1897, was formerly the headquarters of the Bute Dock Company.

1992年に再建された歴史的建造物のノルウェー教会は、現在コンサートや展覧会などを行うアートセンターとなっている。

The Norwegian Church Arts Centre, is a rescued historic wooden church that was rebuilt in 1992 and is as a venue for small concerts, art exhibitions, conferences, meetings and celebrations.

宿泊したPark Plaza Hotel Cardiffは、モダンで広々として居心地のいいホテルで、値段もそんなに高くない。目の前はナイトクラブが集まる通りだけれど、部屋はとても静かで、外の騒音は聞こえない。

Park Plaza Hotel Cardiff where we stayed was a modern and chic hotel with a moderate price and has spacious rooms. It is situated in front of the street with full of night clubs and bars, but the room was very quiet and we didn’t hear any noise from outside.

New London Overground East London Line Now Open

先日、Pizza Eastにランチしに行った時に、ロンドン・オーバーグラウンド、East London line（イースト・ロンドン・ライン）のShoreditch High Street（ショーディッチ・ハイストリート）駅がオープンしているのに気づいた。Pizza Eastで窓際に座るとショーディッチ・ハイストリート駅横の鉄道橋が見えるのだが、ピザを食べながら誰も乗っていない車両が試運転されているのを見て、いつ開通するんだろうとずっと思っていた。

ロンドン東部とDocklands（ドックランズ）を通って北部と南部を結ぶイースト・ロンドン・ラインは、10億ポンドをかけた延長計画のため、2007年12月に閉鎖。その第1段階が最近終了、今年4月27日に限定運行が始まり、5月23日に完全運行が始まった。第1段階工事では、従来のイースト・ロンドン・ラインに、ショーディッチ・ハイストリート駅、Hoxton（ホクストン）駅、 Haggerston（ハガーストン）駅、そして Dalston Junction（ダルストン・ジャンクション）駅を新設、Whitechapel（ホワイトチャペル）駅からDalston Kingsland（ダルストン・キングスランド）駅の間がつながり、ロンドン東部から南部のNew Cross（ニュークロス）駅、Crystal Palace（クリスタル・パレス）駅とWest Croydon（ウェスト・クロイドン）駅まで1本で行けるようになった（以下の路線図を参照）。Highbury & Islington（ハイブリー＆イズリントン）駅までの延長は2011年に、計画第2段階のSurrey Quays（サリー・クウェイズ）駅から、inner South London Line（インナー・サウス・ロンドン・ライン）のClapham Junction（クラッパム・ジャンクション）駅を結ぶラインは、2012年のロンドン・オリンピック前に完成予定。このイースト・ロンドン・ラインの開通で、ドックランズに通勤するビジネスマンの需要が増え、かつては寂れていた地域だった沿線は不動産ブームに沸いているそうだ。

うちから最寄りのホクストン駅まで歩いて20分、近くもなく遠くもない微妙な距離。使えそうで使えなさそう。

When we went to Pizza East the other day, I realized that the new Shoreditch High Street station finally opened. You can see the railway bridge (photo above) when you get a window side seat at Pizza East, and I had been wondering when the London Overground East London line would open, every time I saw a new train on test-run while I was eating a pizza.

The East London line is a London Overground line which runs north to south through the East End and Docklands. The line closed as part of the £1 billion East London line extension in December 2007, but a limited service was introduced on April 27 this year and full service commenced on May 23. In its phase 1, the former underground line was extended northwards from Whitechapel, with new stations at Shoreditch High Street, Hoxton, Haggerston and Dalston Junction. Now you can travel direct from East End to the South, towards New Cross, Crystal Palace, and West Croydon (see a route map below). A further extension to Highbury & Islington is expected to be completed in 2011. Phase 2 which will link the line from Surrey Quays to the inner South London Line at Clapham Junction, is due to be completed prior to the 2012 Summer Olympics. It is reported that the opening of the East London line has brought property boom to the area once isolated areas of southeast London.

The closest station from us to the line is the Hoxton station, but it takes about 20-min walk – not close but not too far. Unfortunately I don’t get much benefit from it.

Taste of Christmas 2009 @ ExCel London

先週末12月4〜6日に、ドックランズ地区にあるコンベンションセンター、ExCel（エクセル・エキシビション・センター）で行われたTaste of Christmas（テイスト・オブ・クリスマス）に行ってきた。Taste of Christmasは、RoastやClub Gascon、Modern Pantryなど、ロンドンの14の有名レストランや、チョコレート、チーズ、ワイン、食材、台所用品等、国内外の150以上の食関係の店や会社が出店する大規模な食の祭典。会場内は、クリスマス用ショッピングにいそしむ人たちでごった返していて、お目当てのブースに近づくにも一苦労。試食や試飲も豊富で、会場を一周する頃にはにはお腹はいっぱい、すっかりほろ酔い気分だった。

Taste Festivalsが企画する「Taste」フード・フェスティバルは、ロンドンで夏（Taste of London）と冬（Taste of Christmas）の年2回ある他、国内ではバーミンガムやエジンバラ、海外でもオーストラリアやオランダ、南アフリカ、ニュージーランド、アラブ首長国連邦の9都市で、全13のフードフェスティバルが開催されている。私はたまたま無料チケットをもらったけれど、なんと入場料は前売りで£19、当日券で£22もする。けっこう無料券を配っていたり、2 for 1割引（2人で1人分）のプロモーションをしていたので、正規の値段を払って来てる人はあんまりいないんじゃないかと思うけど。会場内でも、当然物を買うのも飲んだり食べたりするのは有料。お店は現金やカードが使えるけれども、レストランのブースでは、Crown（2 crown = £1、£10/20 crown単位で買える）という会場内だけで使える通貨を買わないといけないといけくて、Crownが余らないように（または足りなくならないように）、計算しながら飲み食いしないといけないのが面倒くさい。どうして、決済に現金使っちゃいけないんだろう？変なシステムだわ。

I went to Taste of Christmas (Dec 4 – 6) at ExCel exhibitions and conference centre in Docklands, London. Taste of Christmas is one of the biggest food festivals in UK, and gathers London’s 14 popular restaurants and over 150 shops and companies selling food & drinks and anything related to food, together under one roof. It is perfect place to shop groumet foods for Christmas, from chocolate and sweets, cheese, chutneys and dips, cheese, wine and alcoholic drinks, to gifts and kitchen products. It was so full of people that it’s hard to approach to the booth I wanted to take a look at. There were plenty of samples and tastings, and I was quite full and tipsy when I came out of the exit.

Taste Festivals organizes 13 ‘Taste’ food festivals across the countries and abroad; twice in London summer (Taste of London) and winter (Taste of Christmas) as well as Birmingham and Edinburgh, and 9 oversea cities in Australia, Netherlands, South Africa, New Zealand, Ireland and UAE. I got complimentary tickets but normally the ticket costs £19 (£22 on the door)! I heard they gave away lots of complimentary tickets and had 2-for-1 offer, so I believe many people at the Taste of Christmas didn’t pay full amount of the ticket or at all. You have to pay food and drinks at the festival (of course) in addition to the entrance fee – so this expensive entrance fee seems quite a rip-off!  You can use cash as well as credit card at the shops, but you have to buy ‘Crown‘ when you want to eat from the restaurants booths. Crowns are the currency of Taste of Christmas (2 Crowns = £1), and come in booklets of £10/20 Crowns. It is really annoying system that you have to calculate to finish all the Crowns you have, or you have to buy an additional booklet of Crowns cost £10, if you don’t have enough Crowns to buy your food – why can’t we use cash???

G20 demonstration @ London

2日に行われる、主要20カ国・地域（G20）が参加する第2回金融サミット開催を前に、4月1日、金融街シティ、カナリー・ワーフ、G20会場のエクセル・センターがあるドックランズ等、ロンドン各地で反資本主義、反グローバリズム、反戦、気候変動への取り組み等、様々な主張を掲げるデモが行われた。4月1日のエープリルフールにちなみ「フィナンシャル・フールズ・デー」と名付けられたデモでは、一部参加者と警察の間でもみ合いがあり、実質国有化された大手銀行ロイヤル・バンク・オブ・スコットランド（ＲＢＳ）では建物のガラスが割られたほか、スカイニュースによると、少なくとも32人が逮捕され、1人の死者が出たそうだ。と言うと恐ろしげだが、デモ隊は一部区域に集められ、ロンドンの大部分はパトカーがたまに行き来する他は、通常通りだった。

用事があったのでリバプール・ストリート（Liverpool Street）駅の近く、ビショップスゲート（Bishopsgate）を歩いていたら、「Climate Camp」と呼ばれるデモに出くわした。環境保護を訴えるこのグループは、テント持参で明日のG20サミットに備えるらしい。ヒッピー風の若者が多く、ビールやワインを飲んだり、おしゃべりに興じたり、音楽を流して踊ったりと、デモというよりストリート・フェスティバルのような趣きで、警備の警官たちもあまり緊張感がなかった。もっと写真を見たい方はここをクリックして下さい。

今回のデモでは、銀行や銀行員に対する怒りが噴出した。この金融危機を引き起こした張本人で、血税を使って公的資金注入を受けたにもかかわらず、いまだに社員に高額のボーナスを支給する等、不況下で節約を強いられている庶民の神経を逆撫でしていることが理由だ。高額の給料が常識となっている金融界で、満足のいく給料を支払わなければ、優秀な社員が逃げていくという理屈は分かるが、失業や減収に怯える他の業種の人たちの銀行への怒りは凄まじい。この日は、デモ隊の攻撃を恐れ、銀行員たちは私服での出勤や自宅勤務を奨励されたという。いつもは多くのスーツ姿のビジネスマンで溢れるシティも、今日ばかりは怒れるデモ隊に取って代われ、いつもより閑散としていた。

A day before the G20 summit in London, protesters with different slogans, such as anti-capitalism, anti-globalization, anti-war, and fight against climate change etc, gathered in several locations in London today, such as London’s financial center the City, Canary Wharf, and Docklands. This ‘Financial Fools Day‘ demonstration, named after April Fool Day today, radical protesters turned violent and some broke into a branch of the part-nationalized Royal Bank of Scotland. According to Sky News, at least 32 people were arrested and one died. It sounds scary if you read these news, but the protesters were confined to certain areas only and most areas of London was as usual, except police cars went through with siren every now and then.

I happened to walk down on Bishops gate near Liverpool Street Station today, and encountered ‘Climate Camp’, which is a group of activists against climate change. The protesters, most of them are hippyish young people, set up tents to stay over night on the street for tomorrow’s summit, and the ‘camp’ looked more like a street festival than a demonstration — people were drinking beer and wine, chatting, and dancing with the music. The demonstration today was sort of a manifestation of the people’s anger against the banks and bankers. Although they are the one who caused this credit crunch, and the tax money was used to help these failing banks, some bankers are still getting fat bonuses — this caused an outrage among people who are saving pennies to survive. According to the banks, they will loose the top bankers if you don’t pay them well, in the financial industry where high salary is a norm. However, this reasoning doesn’t persuade people in other industries who are fearful of loosing jobs and decreasing pay. The bankers were recommended to wear casual clothes or to work at home today, in order to avoid an attack by angry protesters. Today the City, always busy wit business people in dark suits, was occupied by protesters and many areas were deserted.
