Dogs Trust Float @ Lord Mayor’s Show 2012

先週土曜日の11月8日、この巨大な黄色い犬がオールドストリートからエンジェルを走っていくのを見かけた。調べてみると、これは慈善団体・Dogs Trustの山車で、その日行われたLord Mayor’s Showに参加した帰りだったようだ。

1215年に始まったとされるLord Mayor’s Showは、主催者曰く「the oldest, longest, grandest and most popular civic procession in the world（世界で最も古く、最も豪華で、最も人気のある市と市民の行進）」だそうだ。このLord Mayorとは、シティ・オブ・ロンドン（シティ）の長で名誉職であるロンドン市長のこと。現在ボリス・ジョンソンがその任を務める、シティを含む大ロンドンの行政の長である大ロンドン市長とは違う。新しいLord Mayorは毎年選ばれ、11月第二土曜日に、その就任を祝うLord Mayor Showが開催される。宣誓を終えた後、Lord Mayorはシティから約3.5マイル（約5.63km）のパレードに参加、王立裁判所で「国王」への忠誠を誓う。今年は、22のマーチングバンド、125頭の馬、18台のヴィンテージ車、21台の車両、6500人以上がパレードに参加したそうだ。

この幅5m・高さ3.2m・重さ150kgの世界最大の「首振り犬（→参照）」「Dogcilla」は、Dogs Trustの里親探しセンターに関心を持ってもらうために昨年作られ、現在は、ロンドン西部・EalingのHanger Laneの近くの、A40道上にあるVanguardビルのてっぺんに置かれているそう。

We saw this gigantic yellow dog near Old Street and we chased it with M’s moped on City Road to take some photos. After a little bit of research, I found out that this was a Dogs Trust’s float, participated in the procession of Lord Mayor’s Show 2012 on November 8th, and I happened to see it on their way back, though I didn’t see it parading.

The Lord Mayor’s Show is “the oldest, longest, grandest and most popular civic procession in the world,” started in 1215. The “Lord Mayor” is the mayor of City of London, and is not the “Mayor of London” which has existed only since 2000 now and Boris Johnson is currently on the position that takes care of Greater London, including the City. A new Lord Mayor is appointed every year, and the this Lord Mayor Show celebrates his inauguration and is held on the second Saturday in November. On the day after being sworn in, the Lord Mayor participate in a procession from the City of London to the Royal Courts of Justice where the Lord Mayor swears his allegiance to the Crown. Over 6500 people, 22 marching bands, 125 horses, 18 vintage cars, and 21 carriages paraded over three and a half miles long on this year’s procession.

This 5m long / 3.2m high / 15okg weight world’s largest nodding dog called “Dogcilla” was made to draw attention to their  rehoming centres last year, and you can see it on the Vanguard building on A40 near Hanger Lane, Ealing in West London.

Royal Mail “Simply Drop”: Recycling for Cash

最近、携帯をiPhoneに換えたので、古い携帯をロイヤル・メール（Royal Mail・イギリス郵政公社）の「Simply Drop」でリサイクルすることにした。Simply Dropは、要らなくなった携帯、デジタルカメラ、MP3プレーヤー、インク・カートリッジをリサイクルするシステムで、Greater London Authority Recycle for London（ロンドンを管轄する大ロンドン庁のリサイクル部門）やMet Police National Mobile Phone Crime Unit（ロンドン警視庁携帯犯罪班）、その他リサイクル団体と協力体制を取っている。しばらく前に郵便局に行った時に見かけて、新しい携帯が来たら利用しようかと考えていた。ドラッグストアチェーンのBootsでも、携帯をリサイクルするとポイントがもらえるのだが、私の型番だと300ポイント（£3相当）。Simply Dropだと£8、Mの分とあわせて£16になるというので、ロイヤル・メールにした。ちなみに、インク・カートリッジは、スポンサーとなっているDogs Trustという慈善団体に寄付している。

リサイクルの仕方は簡単。

1．ウェブサイトで登録
2．登録すると、ロイヤル・メールから送られてくる送料無料の封筒に入れて投函
3．ロイヤル・メールで精査の後、報酬が支払われる

進捗状況は、ウェブページでチェック可能。報酬の受け取りは、ペイパル口座への振込、郵便局で現金受け取り、郵便為替の郵送の中から選べ、また報酬を5つの慈善団体の1つに寄付するという選択肢もある。私はペイパルでの支払いを希望（寄付しません、ごめんなさい！）した。リサイクルして、お金ももらえて、良いこと尽くめ。でも今週木、金曜日とまた郵便局がストになりそうなので、送った携帯がちゃんと届くか、ちょっと心配。

I switched my mobile to iPhone recently, so I sent out M’s and my old phones to the Royal Mail‘s “Simply Drop” program. Simply Drop is a recycle scheme for unwanted mobile phones, digital cameras and MP3 players, as well as household inkjet cartridges, and you can earn money by recycling, though it depends on the model. Royal Mail Simply Drop works with the Greater London Authority Recycle for London team and the Met Police National Mobile Phone Crime Unit, as well as well-established recycling organizations. I saw the scheme when I went to a post office a while ago, and thought about using it when I get my new mobile. A drug store chain Boots gives Advantage Card points when you recycle your mobile with them, but I could get only 300 points (equivalent to £3) from Boots. I chose Simply Drop because we could get £8 each, £16 for both of us. As for inkjet cartridges, I donate to Dogs Trust recycling program, with which I become a shelter dog sponsor.

How to recycle your mobile is simple.

1．Register your item on the web
2．Send your item in a prepaid envelope sent by Royal Mail when you register
3．Get your payment

You can track your item on the web. Payment can be made either by deposit into your PayPal account, by cash payment from a local Post Office via a text message confirmation, or by Postal Order via post, or you can donate your reward to one of the five charities. I chose PayPal payment (sorry I don’t donate to a charity). Feel good by recycling unwanted item, and receive cash – perfect system! But it will be another big Postal Strikes, again, on this Thursday and Friday – hope our mobiles will arrive safely.

Dogs Trust: Dog’s Welfare Charity

犬大好きの私だが、アパートの家主がペット禁止だというのと、Mが犬の福祉のため都会で飼うべきじゃないとの信念？の持ち主なので、飼わしてもらえない。それで、少しでも犬の役に立ちたいと、Dogs Trustという犬のチャリティーのスポンサーになった。この制度は、病気や障害、対人恐怖等何らかの事情で里親にもらってもらえずシェルターに暮らしている犬を１匹選んで、金銭的にサポートするもの（週１ポンド）。私はもしかして会いにいく事もあるかもしれないと、West LondonセンターにいるShaneという犬を選んだ。スポンサーになっていると、写真にある「Wag!」という季刊誌の他、折々「Shane」からも、近況を知らせてくれるグリーティングカードが届く。Dogs Trustは、１８９１年に設立されたNCDL（National Canine Defence League）を前身とする、イギリスで歴史ある犬の愛護団体。虐待された犬や捨て犬の救助・保護、里親探し、犬の福祉向上等の活動を行う。「A Dog is for Life, not just for Christmas（犬はクリスマスプレゼントじゃなく、一生もの）」がスローガンで、心身ともに健康な犬は、殺処分しないがモットーだ。全国に17のRehoming Centre（犬を保護しているセンター）を持ち、昨年は１万匹以上の犬が里親にもらわれていった。

イギリスは、動物愛護運動が盛んだ。RSPCA（Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals：王立動物虐待防止協会）は、世界最古で最大の動物福祉で、イギリスで最大級のチャリティ団体だ。また、研究所等に忍び込み実験用動物を「解放」したり、実験に関わる人を恐喝したりする過激派「アニマル・テロリスト」もよく紙面を賑わせる。１月には７人の活動家が恐喝で実刑判決を受けたという記事を読んだ。日本では、年間何十万もの捨てられたペットが保健所で殺処分になるそうだが、そんなことしたらイギリスでは恐らく暴動ものだろう。また日本では、子犬・子猫以外は里親にもらわれないみたいだが、こちらは年寄りや病気、障害を持つ動物たちの里親に進んでなる人も多い。やはり人権意識の強いイギリス人は、動物の権利も尊重するのだろう。日本でも、飼い主がもっと責任を持ってペットを飼い、殺処分される動物たちが減るように祈るばかりです。

I really love dogs but I cannot have one, because our landlord doesn’t allow a pet in our apartment, and M believes that we shouldn’t have a dog in a city for dog’s sake. In order to give a little love for dogs, I became a sponsor for dogs which cannot be rehomed for some reasons. You can become a sponsor for one dog by paying £1 a week, and I picked Shane at the West London center, which is the only one in London, so that I can visit her if I want. Sponsors receive their quarterly magazine ‘Wag!’ and occasional greetings from your sponsored dog to notify us what it is doing. Dogs Trust, founded in 1891 and formerly known as the NCDL (National Canine Defence League) , is an animal welfare charity which specialises in the wellbeing of dogs. The charity provides kennels for abandoned  or disowned dogs, rehomes them, and also works for the welfare of dogs. With its slogan ‘A Dog is for Life, not just for Christmas’, Dogs Trust ensures that no mentally and physically healthy dog taken into the protection of the rescue/re-homing centres shall be destroyed.  It has 17 rehoming centres around the UK, and found new homes for over 10,000 dogs last year.

The animal right activities are very popular in UK. RSPCA (Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) is s the oldest and largest animal welfare organisation in the world and is one of the largest charities in the UK. You hear all the times in the media about ‘animal terrorism’ attacking research labs doing animal testings, and ‘rescuing’ animals for experiments.   In January, I read the article that 7 animal rights activists were sentenced to jail. In Japan, 340,000 abandoned dogs and cats were killed in 2006 at public health centers. If the same thing happen here, it will be a riot! Also only ‘cute’ pups and kittens are adopted in Japan, but some British are willing to take old, sick or disabled dogs to their home. British, who have a strong sense of human rights, also care about animal rights. I hope there are more people responsible for your pets in Japan so that less animals will be put to sleep.
