Ben Eine: Alphabet Graffiti / Street Arts @ Middlesex Street

今日、リバプールストリート駅近くのMiddlesex Street（ミドルセックス・ストリート）を通りかかったら、あちこちのお店のシャッターに、見覚えのあるカラフルなアルファベットが描かれていた。これらは、グラフィティ／ストリート・アーティスト、Ben Eine（ベン・アイン）の作品。9月20日からMiddlesex StreetにあるElectric Blue Galleryで開かれる展覧会を前にEineが描いた、小文字のアルファベット全26文字が、リバプールストリート駅からペチコートレーンまで、Middlesex Street沿いの店に散りばめられている。

以前5年ほどBanksyと共に活動、近年東京やニューヨーク、LA、パリでも、トレードマークであるアルファベットを描いたEineは、2010年にはアニヤ・ハインドマーチとのコラボ・トートも手がけたと言えど、それまで比較的無名なアーティストだった。それが、7月にデーヴィッド・キャメロン首相が訪米した折り、彼の作品「Twenty First Century City」をオバマ大統領にプレゼントしたことで、一躍有名になった（参考記事1, 2）。これは、最近第四子を出産した、サマンサ首相夫人が彼の作品の大ファンだからだそうだが、上流階級出身で保守党党首の妻であるサム・キャム（彼女の愛称）が彼やストリート・アートのファンだとはちょっと意外。ちなみに2,500ポンドするこの作品は、首相が買ったのではなく、Eineが贈呈したという。

When we walked through Middlesex Street near Liverpool Street Station, we found many bright and colorful alphabets painted on shutters of closed shops here and there on the street. These recognizable alphabets are the works of graffiti / street artist, Ben Eine. Prior to his exhibition starting on September 20 at the Electric Blue Gallery on Middlesex Street, Eine painted the entire alphabet in lowercase letters on the local business’ shutters on Middlesex Street from Liverpool Street Station to Petticoat Lane.

Eine used to work with Banksy for five years, and recently left his signature alphabet on shutters in cities like Tokyo, New York, LA and Paris. In 2010, Anya Hindmarch has collaborated on a collection of totes with Eine. However he was relatively unknown, until his work “Twenty First Century City” was given to the President Obama when Prime Minister David Cameron visited US in this July (related article1, 2). This £2,500 work was not actually purchased by Downing Street, but Eine donated it. This happened because his wife Samantha, who just gave a birth of her forth child few days ago, is a big fan of Eine. It is quite surprising that posh Sam Cam fancies a street art – I cannot quite connect between the two.

2009 Budget in Red Briefcase

4月22日、アリスター・ダーリング財務相によって、2009年度予算案が発表された。当日は、庶民院（House of Commons）での発表を前に、恒例として、財務相公邸であるダウニング街11番地前で、財務相が「Budget box」と呼ばれる赤い革のブリーフケースを掲げ、報道用の写真撮影が行われるのが恒例行事だ。財務相の持っているブリーフケースは、1860年頃に作られたオリジナル。この習慣は戦後初の財務相、Hugh Dalton氏によって始められたとされ、ゴードン・ブラウン首相が財相だった1997年に新しいブリーフケースが作られたが、ダーリング財相は今回オリジナルものを使用した。

新年度予算には、アルコール税・タバコ税値上げ、ガソリン税値上げの延期、大気汚染物質の排出量が多い車への道路税値上げ、低公害車への買い替えへの補助、年金生活者への暖房費補助、スーパーのレジ袋への課金、子供の貧困への取り組み、低所得者層への燃料費補助等、環境問題・福祉に重きを置く労働党政権らしい政策が盛り込まれた。また、論争の的になっているのは、年間15万ポンド以上の収入のある高額所得者層（人口の1％程）への課税強化で、以前の40％から50％になった。もちろん、中流階級以上の富裕層が支持基盤の保守党（愛称Tory／トーリー）は大反対だ。政府は、この措置は暫定的なもので、将来の見直しもあり得るとしているが、税収減の歳入減・景気対策のための歳出増で赤字が急速に膨らむ中、景気大回復か政権交代しないと変わらないだろうな。幸か不幸か、私には関係のない話だけれど。

On April 22nd, the Budget 2009 was announced by Chancellor Alistair Darling. On Budget day, the chancellor holds up the “Budget box” for the press photo-shoot outside of 11 Downing Street before the delivery of the statement at the Commons. The original briefcase was made in around 1860, and this custom is believed to be originated by Hugh Dalton, the first post-war chancellor. In 1997 former Chancellor Gordon Brown ordered a new briefcase, but Chancellor Alistair Darling reverted to using the original box.

Key features of the Budget include delay 2p rise in fuel duty, increase in alcohol and tobacco tax, higher road tax on polluting cars and scrappage scheme, winter fuel support for pensioners, charge for supermarket plastic bags, tackle child poverty, and help with energy costs for poor families etc — sounds typical socialistic Labour policies. The most controversial change this year is a new 50% top tax rate for people who earn more than £150,000 a year, soaring up from 40%. Of course Tory Party, supported by middle class and the rich, protest against it. The Labour government suggest the possibility of reverse the rate in the future, but I doubt it is possible unless the economic boom come back again or the Labour loose the power, with less tax income with credit crunch and more spending with economic stimulus plan, and the government borrowing doubles. Fortunately or unfortunately, the tax rate won’t affect us anyway!
