Free Papers in Hackney & East London

近年、ヒップでエキサイティングなエリアとしてのイーストロンドンの評判が上がるにつれ、ローカルなニュースやカフェ、レストラン、バー、アート＆カルチャー、イベント情報などを掲載した新しい無料情報紙が次々誕生している。写真は最近この辺でよく見かける3紙。

Hackney Citizenは、独立系の無料月刊紙で、いつ創刊したかの記載はないけれど、2009年6月にFacebookページが出来たことを考えると、その頃だろう。2010年7月には従来の年4回から毎月の発行になり、現在、毎月第一週にハックニー内の駅、カフェ、ショップ、マーケット、図書館などに置かれる。

East End Reviewについては、この12月号が3号目とまだ新しく、イーストロンドンの音楽やアート、シアター、本、映画、ファッション、フード＆ドリンクを紹介するということぐらいしか、情報がない。でも、発行者がHackney Citizenと同じくCitizen Media Ltdなので、この2紙は姉妹紙なんだろう。

Dalstonistは、近年開発著しいDalstonとその周辺エリアに住む18〜34歳の若者をターゲットに、ローカルカルチャー、音楽、イベント、ナイトライフに関する情報を掲載。オンラインメディアとしてスタートしたが、最近季刊で印刷版を発行、2013/14年冬号が記念すべき第一号だ。

3紙ともカラーで紙面デザインもいい。イーストロンドンの今を知るのに便利。

As East End’s reputation as a hip & exciting district in London has gone up steeply in recent few years, some free papers have come out to tell readers about local news, cafes & restaurants, art & culture, and events. The three papers in the photo above are the ones I often see at many places across the area.

Hackney Citizen is Hackney’s independent, free monthly newspaper. I can’t find when they started, but I guess it was June 2009 when they joined Facebook. From July 2010, it became a monthly publication from its quarterly print editions, distributed in the first week of every month at Hackney’s markets, train stations, and in cafes, shop, businesses and libraries.

I can’t find much information on internet about East End Review, rather than talking about arts and culture in East London, such as music, art, theatre, books, film, and fashion, as well as food & drink. And this December issue is the third edition of them. But the publisher, Citizen Media Ltd, is the same as of Hackney Citizen, so I assume they are sister papers.

Dalstonist offers news about local culture, music, events and nightlife for 18-34 year olds (I am out of their target readers…) in emerging area of Dalston and the surrounding area in Hackney. They started as online paper but now they launched their first quarterly print publication for winter 2013/14.

All three papers are printed in colour and decently designed. Perfect source to get more in depth information of East End.

Town Hall Hotel @ Patriot Square, Bethnal Green

This Bright Fieldから南へ数分歩くと、エドワード様式の立派な建物が見えてくる。これは2010年にオープンしたTown Hall Hotelで、シンガポール人ホテル実業家のLoh Lik Pengが、以前は区役所として使われていた、1909年建造のこの建物を改装。大理石の床や柱、立派な階段を備えた吹き抜けのロビーの片隅には、ミッド・センチュリー風の椅子が並ぶなど、アールデコ装飾とモダンなインテリアを融合した、優雅なデザインホテルに生まれ変わった。また、ホテル内のパブリック・スペースには、繊細な木版画や鉛筆描きの壁画、ペルシャ絨毯から作られたmoose（アメリカヘラジカ）の頭など、イースト・ロンドンのアーティストの作品が飾られている。

ロンドンに住んでいる人には宿泊する機会がないかもしれないけれど、ホテルには、ポルトガル人シェフ・Nuno Mendesがプロデュースした、ミシュラン一つ星のViajanteともう少しカジュアルなCorner roomという、二つの人気レストランが入っており、多くのグルメたちが訪れる。

部屋については泊まった事がないので、ご興味ある方は、批評家のレビュー（Telegraph/Guardian）と、デザインホテルサイト・Mr & Mrs Smithをチェックしてみて。でも、ホテルのあるエリアは、お世辞にも柄の良いエリアではなく、世界のおもちゃのコレクションを有するV&A Museum of Childhoodと、以前にブログでも取り上げた、いくつかのカフェやレストランしかないので、ロンドン初心者にはあまりお勧めできないかも。

Walking down several minutes to the south from This Bright Field, you will see Town Hall Hotel, opened sometime in 2010 and housed in a grand Edwardian building in Bethnal Green. Singapore hotelier Loh Lik Peng has transformed this former council hall with Art Deco detailing (history of the building) into this elegant boutique hotel, keeping the old charms but adding modern fixtures. The atrium is classic and impressive, with designed marble floors and marble pillars as well as imposing staircases, and also has some contemporary feel with mid-century style chairs for guests to relax. Inside of the hotel’s public spaces, you can see artworks by East London artists, such as delicate woodcuts, murals in pencil, and a mounted moose head made from Persian carpet.

For people who live in London, including us, may not have a chance to sleep in. However, this hotel houses two popular restaurants which are produced by renowned Portuguese chef Nuno Mendes, michelin-stared Viajante and Corner room, that attract many foodie Londoners.

I can’t write about the rooms as I’ve never slept there, so check the critique’s reviews (Telegraph/Guardian) or Boutique hotel site Mr & Mrs Smith if you want to stay. However, the location is not central or sophisticated at all,there is nothing but V&A Museum of Childhood and some hip neighborhood cafés & restaurants, and I am not sure if I want to recommend this hotel to a foreign guest who comes to London for the first time…

This Bright Field @ Cambridge Heath Road, Bethnal Green

今年の夏にオープンした、The Bright Fieldカフェ＆レストランは、Ombra、Hackney Bureau、Hurwundekiなどに続き、イースト・エンドのCambridge Heath Roadに近年誕生したヒップなカフェの一つ。以前お花屋さんだった場所にできたこの店の名前は、Spitalfieldsについて書かれたWilliam Taylorの本のタイトルから取られており、その名「Bright Field」のごとく陽当たりがよく明るい店内は、気取らずシンプルで居心地がいい。店の真ん中に陣取っているオープンキッチンで作られる、朝食＆ランチ（月〜金）、ディナー（木〜土）、週末のブランチと、新鮮でハイクオリティだけどイースト・ロンドンお手頃価格の食事は、オープン数ヶ月にして既に大人気。ゆっくり食事したいなら、混雑する時間は避けた方がベター。

The Bright Field café/restaurant opened in this summer of 2012, where used to be a florist, I believe. This is a recent addition to the Cambridge Heath Road on East End, where some hip eateries opened recently such as Ombra, Hackney Bureau and Hurwundeki. With its name taken from William Taylor book about Spitalfields, this bright casual-chic café, equipped with a spacious open kitchen visible by customers, has been very popular because of their fresh & high quality food for breakfast & lunch (Mon-Fri), supper (Thu-Sat), and weekend brunch with affordable East End price. If you want to dine relaxingly, avoid the busy time.

カンバーランド・ソーセージ、粒マスタード、トマト・レリッシュ、Hampshire

産watercress（オランダガラシ）入りサンドイッチと、ベーコン、オーガニックの卵から作られたマヨネーズ、アボカドのサンドイッチ（各£6）。美味しかったけれど、お腹ぺこぺこだったので、もう少し大きかったら嬉しかった。

Cumberland sausage, grain mustard, tomato relish, Hampshire watercress sandwich and Sweet cured bacon, organic egg mayonnaise, avocado sandwich (£6 each). Those sandwiches were good but I wish it would be a bit bigger – we were quite hungry!

Hackney Bureau (Andor Bureau) @ Mare Street, Hackney

今日、Ombraに行ったら定休日だったので、向かいにあるHackney Bureau (Andor Bureau)でランチした。塗装の途中で力尽きてギブアップしたかのような外観だけれど、中はusedのテーブル＆椅子のシンプルな内装にアートギャラリーが融合した、典型的イースト・ロンドン風インテリア。客もアートっぽい人たちや若者が多い。

その見た目通り、メニューもシンプル、朝食が数種、ランチはサラダとサンドイッチ数種ずつがあるだけだ（日替わりメニューもあり）。また、ペイストリーやケーキ類も何種類かある。今は午後7時までの営業だけれど、将来は11時まで営業時間を延長し、ディナーも提供する予定だそうだ。サンドイッチ単品で£5と値段は少々お高めだけれど、オーガニック・ベーカリーのE5 Bakehouseから仕入れたパンと新鮮な材料を使ったサンドイッチはフレッシュでなかなか美味しいし、使用しているセカンドハンドの食器も趣味がいい。La Marzoccoで淹れたコーヒーも文句なし。このカフェ、なかなかの拾い物かも。

Ombra was closed when we went there today, so we had lunch at Hackney Bureau (Andor Bureau) across the street. The exterior looks half-finished, like they gave up painting half-way and ran away. However, its typical rusty + grungy East End style interior with used tables and chairs is less scary and also the space is used as an art gallery as well.

As it looks, its menu is also simple; just few kinds of breakfast menu and few kinds of sandwiches + some daily dishes during lunch time, as well as some pastries and cakes. At this moment the café closes at 7pm but it is planning to open for dinner in the future. The sandwich costs £5, which is a bit pricy for a sandwich, but the bread from an organic bakery E5 Bakehouse and fresh ingredients can justify the price. The choice of its second hand dishes and cups & saucers are in good taste. Finally the espresso made with La Marzocco is very good. A lucky find at the end.

Bird Café @ Bradbury Street, Dalston

Dalston Kingsland（ダルストン・キングスランド）駅北側のBradbury Street（ブラッドベリー・ストリート）に最近オープンした、Bird Café（バード・カフェ）。ミッド・センチュリー風のインテリアに、ファンキーなランプシェードやアートが同居した、いかにもイーストエンド風のカフェだ。「Bird」というだけあって、トイレには小さな鳥のオブジェが並んでいる。テーブルが中に4台、外に2台あるだけの小さいこのカフェ、時間がゆっくり流れていて、なんとも寛げる。その日に焼かれたサワードウを使ったサンドイッチは、時間はかかるけれど丁寧に作られていて美味。Climpson & Sonsから仕入れたコーヒー豆で淹れたコーヒーや紅茶、ケーキやスムージーもある。

このカフェのあるBradbury Street、理由は分からないけれど、しばらく閉鎖されていて、4月30日に再オープンしたみたい（参考記事）。端から端まで歩いて1分もかからないこの通りに、ロンドン中心部ではあまり見かけないナイジェリア料理やカリビアン・フードのテークアウト・ショップや（この辺りはアフリカ系やカリブ系黒人が多い）や、ブティックや中古レコード・レトロ物ショップが混在している。まだいくつか空きスペースがちらほらあるけれど、近くにOvergroundのDalston Junction（ダルストン・ジャンクション）駅が開通し、2006年オープンのパブリック・アート・スペース、Gillet Square（ギレット・スクエア）もすぐ側で、これからトレンディなエリアになりそうな予感がする。

Bird Café just opened in 2 months ago on Bradbury Street, on the north of Dalston Kingsland Station. This cozy café with just four tables inside and two outside is typical East End-ish, decorated with mid-century furniture and quirky lamp shades and modern art. You can see cute little ‘bird’ objects in the toilet as well. Their tasty sandwiches with  freshly baked sour dough and fresh ingredients are made with love. You have to wait a while but it worth waiting. Their coffee are from famous Climpson & Sons, and teas, smoothies, salads and cakes are also available.

Bradbury Street was supposely closed for a while and re-opened on the last day of April (Hackney Citizen article), though I don’t know why. On this tiny street with less than one minute walk, there are Nigerian and Carribean takeaway shops that are rarely seen in central London as well as independent boutique and old records and retro shops staying side by side. With recent opening of new Overground Dalston Junction station, as well as the vibe from the next door public art space Gillet Square, Bradbury Street can be transformed to the latest hip area in the East, I believe.
