Castles (near) Kent : Bodiam Castle

シッシングハースト城から車で20分程のところにあるBodiam castle（ボディアム城）は、正確に言うとケント州ではなく、隣のイースト・サセックス州にある。このお濠に囲まれた四角形のお城は、エドワード3世に仕えた騎士・Edward Dalyngrigge（エドワード・ダリングリッグ）により、百年戦争におけるフランスの侵略からの防衛、そしてステータスと富を象徴する彼自身の住まいとして、1385年に建立。四角形という構造上、防護壁と中庭に沿って、様々な部屋が作られた。Dalyngrigge家が途絶えると、婚姻関係によってLewknor（ルークノー）家の手に渡り、16世紀までその所有下にあったが、その後は様々な所有者を経た末、1643年に取り壊され、廃墟となった。1829年にJohn Fuller（ジョン・フラー）に買い取られ、Fullerを含む、George Cubitt（ジョージ・キュビット）初代Ashcombe（アシュコム）男爵、ジョージ・カーゾン (初代カーゾン・オヴ・ケドルストン侯爵)と続いた所有者の手で一部修復された。カーゾン侯爵の死後、1925年にNational Trust（ナショナル・トラスト）に寄贈され、第一級指定建造物、指定遺跡として保護されている。

廃墟に近いと言えど、いくつかの部屋と塔は観光客に開放されている。お城の歴史を展示や15分間のDVDで学んだり、狭くて急な螺旋階段を上り、塔の上から景色を眺めるのもいいし、お城に続く橋の上で観光客が投げ入れるパン屑などに群がるたくさんの鴨や鯉を見るのも楽しい。子供たちは、広大な芝生の上や、ドイツ軍の襲撃（結局ドイツ軍は来なかったらしいけれど）に備えて敷地内に作られた第二次世界大戦中の小さな要塞の中で歓声を上げている。とてものどかで風光明媚なお城。

Bodiam castle, 20-minute drive from the Sissinghurst Castle, is located in neighboring East Sussex, not in Kent. This quadrangular-shaped moated castle was built in 1385 by Sir Edward Dalyngrigge, a former knight of Edward III, as his home to show off his status and wealth and as a defence against French raid during the Hundred Years’ War. Chambers were built around the outer defensive walls and inner courts. After Dalyngrigge family’s line became extinct, the castle passed by marriage to the Lewknor family, who had owned the castle until at least the 16th century. Since then, Bodiam had been on different hands and was dismantled in 1643. It was left as a ruin until its purchase by John Fuller in 1829, but was partially restored by Fuller, George Cubitt, 1st Baron Ashcombe, and then the last owner of the castle, Lord Curzon. It has been owned by the National Trust since 1925, donated by Lord Curzon on his death, and is protected as a Grade I listed building and Scheduled Monument.

Although quite knocked down, towers and some rooms, where you can learn the history of Bodiam on 15-minute DVD as well as exhibition, are open to public. You may want to walk up narrow and steep spiral staircases to the top of the towers, where you will be rewarded with wonderful views. You can enjoy watching dozens of desperate ducks and carps fighting for food thrown by visitors on the bridge which connects the park and the castle. Kids can play on the grass surrounded the castle and around the WWII bunker built in the castle ground against German invasion, which never occurred. Very peaceful and picturesque castle.

Trip to South East Coast of Englnad

大雨と言われていた予報に反し、イギリスでは珍しく青空の広がる快晴となった先日、イングランドの南東海岸を小旅行した。

セブン・シスターズは、イーストボーン（Eastbourne）とシーフォード（Seaford）の間に広がる、白亜（Chalk／チョーク）の断崖。お昼頃に着いて海岸線を散歩していたら、急に満潮になってどんどん水位が上がってきたので慌てて駐車場へ繋がる階段へと戻った。バーリング・ギャップ（Birling Gap）という岬の丘の上で、ピクニック。海岸線から陸側にある羊牧場まで360度見渡せる最高の眺めだ。

セブン・シスターズから約40km東にある・ヘイスティングスは、海辺のリゾートタウン。1066年にフランスのノルマンディー公（ウイリアム）がイギリス王ハロルド2世の軍を打ち破って、グレート・ブリテン島を支配することになった、「ヘイスティングスの戦い」の舞台となった。戦いの後、ウィリアム1世が建設したとされるヘイスティングス城が、西側の丘の上に残るが、崖崩れのためほとんど原形をとどめていない。また、海辺近くには、背が高く黒く塗られた木の漁師の綱小屋が50以上も並んでいる。

さらに東に20km行くと、「南東イングランドで最も美しい場所」と言われる、中世の町並みの残るライ（Rye）に辿り着く。14世紀から栄えた港町・ライの旧市街には、丸い石が敷き詰められた石畳の路地が広がり、その両脇には中世から残るチューダー様式の建物が並んでいる。セント・メアリー教会や博物館となっている要塞イプラ・タワー（Ypres Tower）のある、街の高台からの景色がとてもいい。またアンティークの町としても有名。水曜日の午前中に開かれるファーマーズマーケットで、ピクニック用のランチを買った。

最終目的地は、イギリスで最もヨーロッパ大陸と近く、昔から大陸と結ぶ街として栄えてきたドーバー。イギリス防御の最前線で「イギリスの鍵」と呼ばれ、第二次世界大戦でも使用された軍事要塞・ドーバー城からは、港やドーバーの町が一望できる。広々とした敷地内には、ローマ帝国時代の灯台や隣接するサクソン教会、第2次世界大戦中に作られ使用された三層のトンネルもある。お城は現在改修工事中で、中を見られなかったのが残念。

Seven Sisters is are a series of chalk cliffs located between the towns of Seaford and Eastbourne.We arrived there around noon and took a walk, but the sea level was going up suddenly and we had to run back to the stairs to go back up. We had a picnic lunch on the top of the hill of Birling Gap, where we could have a excellent 360º view of the cliffs and the sheep farms inland.

Around 40km east of Birling Gap is the seaside resort of Hastings. Here there was the Battle of Hastings in 1066 — the Norman army of William the Conqueror conquered the English army led by Harold Godwinson. The Hasting castle, which was build by William, remains on the west hill, but it was destroyed by the collapse of the cliffs. On the coast of Hastings, there are over 50 impressive black wooden ‘net shops’ used by fishermen .

A medieval port town of Rye, 50km east of Hastings,was flourished in 14 centuries and is said to be ‘the most beautiful place in south-east England’. Mermaid Street shows steep slope and cobbled surface with Tudor style houses on the sides. There is a nice view from Church of St. Mary and the Ypres Tower on the highest point of the town. Rye is also known as an antique town, and there is a farmer’s market on every Wednesday morning.

Last stop was Dover, the closest point to the European continent and has always been a gateway to Europe. Dover Castle has been described as the “Key to England” due to its defensive significance throughout history until the World War II. The site also contains Roman lighthouses, the Saxon church of St Mary de Castro, and the secret WWII tunnels. It was a shame that we couldn’t see the inside of the castle due to its repair work.
