Tina, We Salute You @ Dalston

このブログを通じて知り合ったブロガーから教えてもらって、前から気になっていたカフェ、Tina, We Salute Youに行ってきた。前にも一度行ったのだけれど、あいにくサンドイッチが売り切れていたので退散。今回は食べ物はまだあったけれど、小さなお店はほぼ満席、相席をお願いして何とか腰を落ち着けた。何か印象が違うなと思ったら、壁が塗り替えられていた（写真下）。今の方がシンプルで断然いい。

ミッド・センチュリーの中古家具やアンティーク風の食器類は、なかなかセンス良し。新鮮な材料を使った手作りサンドイッチも、甘すぎずふんわり仕上がったチョコレートケーキも、共に合格点。今まで書いてきたコーヒーが美味しいカフェで、Union Hand Roastedと共に高いシェアを誇るSquare Mileのコーヒー豆を使い、これまたこれらのカフェで高い使用率を誇る、エスプレッソ・マシンのフェラーリ・La Marzoccoでいれたコーヒーも美味しい。

周りには何もない住宅地なのに、行った2回とも満員御礼。その後も客が入れ替わり立ち替わりやってきた。ブリック・レーンで日曜に開かれるSunday UpMarketで、カップケーキを売る屋台から始まったというTina, We Salute You、今ではすっかり地元の人気店に成長した。美味しい食べ物とコーヒーがあれば、お店がどこにあっても人はやってくるんだという一例だ。少し分かりにくい場所にあるので、行く時は地図検索してからどうぞ。

We finally made to sit down at Tina, We Salute You, a café one of the blogger recommended me for great espresso. We tried there once, but we left without ordering anything, as lunch time was over and no food was left. This time we almost missed to experience the café again as it was nearly full, but we asked other customers to share the table and we made it! I thought something was different, and I realized the wall was repainted (photos below), since the first visit. It’s simple and impressive, and much better than before!

The café’s antique tableware and mid-century style second-hand furniture are very nice. Handmade sandwiches with fresh ingredients passed the test, and their great chocolate cake was smooth and moderately sweet so that I don’t have to feel too much guilt to finish the treat. Another great thing was their espresso – brewed with Ferrari of espresso machine La Marzocco, using coffee beans from an established coffee roaster Square Mile, which has a big share together with Union Hand Roasted at the cafés that I wrote in the past where you can have a great cup of coffee.

Tina, We Salute You is in the middle of boring residential area, but it was full on both days we went. Even after we sat down, new customers came in constantly. Starting from a cupcake stall in Sunday UpMarket near Brick Lane, the café is grown up to become a favored place in the neighborhood. This proves a golden rule of successful café – people will come as long as it offers great food and coffee, no matter where it is. Tina, We Salute You is a bit hard to find, so don’t forget to search a map before you go.

Tapped & Packed Coffee @ Tottenham Court Road

チェーン系以外の気の利いたカフェが意外とないトッテナム・コート・ロード駅北部に、可愛いカフェ「Tapped & Packed」を見つけた。外には番地の「No.26」があるだけで、店名はない。入口を入ると、サンドイッチやケーキ類が木製のボードに整然と並べられたカウンターがあり、奥には、音楽系フォトグラファーだというオーナー？スタッフ？の写真が飾られた、居心地のいい空間が広がっている。居心地が良すぎるせいか、何組もの客が、仕事の打ち合わせをしたり、コンピュータに向かったりと、オフィス代わりに使っている。まあ、これはロンドンのどこのカフェでもそうだけれど、私はカフェで仕事はしたくないなあ。うるさいし、混んでる店で長居すると他の人の迷惑になるし。

Tapped & Packedはコーヒーにこだわりがあって、Square Mile、Climpson & Sons、Union Hand Roastedという、3つのロンドンの有名コーヒー焙煎店から仕入れた豆を使用。エスプレッソマシンを使って淹れるイタリア式コーヒーの他、好みのコーヒー豆と、ドリップ、エアロプレス、サイフォン、カフェティエール（フレンチプレス）の4種類から淹れ方を選べるBrewed Coffee（いわゆる普通のコーヒー）がある。サンドイッチは見た目は綺麗で材料も良質だけれども、私はトーストされたサンドイッチの方が好きなので、ランチにはあんまり来ないかも知れないけれど、美味しいコーヒーで一休みしたい時に是非立ち寄りたい。

We found a cute café on the north of Tottenham Court Road station, where not many nice cafés around other than chains. You don’t see its name outside, but just address of “No.26”. When you walk in the café, you see a counter with beautiful looking sandwiches and cakes on nice wooden boards. There is a cosy and laid back space in the back, decorated with photographs taken by a music photographer owner (? or a staff?). It is so comfy that there were some groups of customers having business meeting or working on a computer, as they were in their own office (do they have an office anyway??). It is a common scenery in any café in London, but I don’t like to work in a noisy café and I don’t want to annoy other customers waiting for a table.

Tapped & Packed is proud of its great coffee. They use three popular roasters (Square Mile, Climpson & Sons and Union Hand Roasted). Other than Italian style coffee made with an espresso machine, you can also have brewed coffee that you can choose out of four methods, Filter, Aeropress, Siphon and Cafetiere, and coffee bean of your choice. I am not a big fan of their sandwiches, though they look gorgeous and fresh, just because I prefer a toasted hot sandwich. But Tapped & Packed is a perfect place to relax with an excellent cup of coffee.

Dose Espresso Café @ Barbican/Smithfield

地下鉄Barbican駅からLong LaneをSmithfield Marketの方向に向かって数分のところにあるカフェ、Dose Espresso。Sacred CafeやNude Espressoと同様、またまたニュージーランド人経営の、客が２組も入ればいっぱいになる小さなカフェだけれど、シドニーとロンドンで7年以上経験を積んだバリスタであるオーナーの、コーヒーや食べ物に関するこだわりは強い。愛用のLa Marzocco FB-80は、フィレンツェで手作りされたエスプレッソ・マシーンの最高級品。コーヒーは、品質に定評のあるSquare Mile Coffee Roastersから、生産者の待遇や栽培方法に極力配慮したコーヒー豆を仕入れている。サンドイッチやサラダ、ポリッジ等は手作り。オーガニックの材料を使って石釜で焼かれたパンはBorn and Bread Bakeryから、キッシュ、スープ、スウィーツはTime Out誌での評価も高いBea’s of Bloomsburyから仕入れている。今回Mはモッツァレラとトマトのサンドイッチを、私はバナナのパウンドケーキを頼んだ（photo）。残念ながらサンドイッチはMのお気に召さなかったらしいが、温めてバターを少しのせたパウンドケーキは、ダウンアンダー系のカフェにつきもののFlat Whiteの苦みと良く合って、とてもおいしかった。Mのデザートのマッチ箱サイズの小型フィナンシェも絶品、ちょっと甘いものを食べたい時にぴったり（photo）。ただ木の椅子とプラスティック製のスツールは、座り心地が良くないのが残念。まあ、小さい店なので、長居せず、次の客に席を譲れということなのだろう。可愛いメニューボードも必見。

Dose Espresso is small on Long Lane, few minutes walk from Barbican tube station toward Smithfield Market. Like Sacred Cafe and Nude Espresso, another Kiwi-owned tiny café with few seats, but the owner’s passion for coffee and food deserves to be acknowledged. The owner is an experienced barista who had worked over 7 years in Sydney and London, and his La Marzocco FB-80 is the top quality espresso machine handmade in Florence. Their coffee is ethically sourced, carefully roasted and delivered in reusable buckets from Square Mile Coffee Roasters, which specialise in finding the best coffee beans from around the world. Sandwiches, salads and porridges are homemade. Their organic bread are baked in wood fired oven and comes from artisan bakery Born and Bread. The quiches, soups and sweets are delivered from Bea’s of Bloomsbury, highly rated café/bakery by Time Out. M ordered Mozzrella and tomato sandwich, and I ordered Banana cake and Flat White, which is a must at “down under” café (photo).  The sandwich unfortunately wasn’t nominated in M’s list of the best sandwich in town (M said it was blunt – maybe it was almost the end of the day?), but my banana cake, warmed and topped with some butter, was excellent and perfect with bitter Flat White. M’s desert, matchbox size friands was delicious as well, and perfect to satisfy your sugar craze while you are on diet (photo). I don’t call their wooden chairs and plastic stools are the most comfortable seats, but I guess that we have to give up the seat for a next guest as soon as we finish our food or coffee, due to their limited space. Must see their cute menu board, before you leave.
