Frieze Art Fair 2011 @ Regent’s Park

London’s biggest art event, Frieze Art Fair 2011 started today (til 16th, Sunday). It houses 173 galleries from 33 countries, showcasing contemporary art works of more than 1,000 artists (see also last year’s blog entry).

Strip 2011 by Gerhard Richter, the most expensive artist in the fair, whose retrospective is currently running at Tate Modern. The work is already reserved, with estimated price of at least €1.1 million (see details at Evening Standard article).

Olympic Park in Strattford: ES Magazine

I saw the photos of Olympic Park, currently on construction in Stratford in east London, on  ES, a lifestyle magazine which comes with London’s free evening paper Evening Standard on Fridays. The construction seems to be going well, in compare to Athens Olympic, with its construction of the olympic facilities were finished just few seconds before the inauguration.

£2.5 billion is spent for this new sporting complex with 100,000 seats that will host 2012 London Summer Olympics, and the largest shopping centre in Europe, Westfield is due to open in the 500-acre site. £500 million Olympic Stadium will be taken over by West Ham United from the 2014-15 football season. £300 million Aquatics Centre is designed by world-renown architect Zaha Hadid. Anish Kapoor-designed 115 metre-tall observation tower “Arcelormittal Orbit” is funded mostly (up to £16 million of the £19.1 million project) by Britain’s richest man Lakshmi Mittal, chairman of the ArcelorMittal steel. This steel tower, looking like twisted red jet coaster rails, will offer “unparalleled views of the entire Olympic Park and London’s skyline”, according to the Greater London Authority.

Second Chance Sales for London Olympic 2012

I received the notice from London 2012 Olympic committee, saying that I have not been allocated the tickets I requested for the opening and closing ceremonies in April (see past entry). According to the Evening Standard’s article, two thirds of 1.9 million applicants for the Olympic tickets, which is 1.2 million, couldn’t win tickets – so we are not so unlucky after all. In the notice, I was also informed that I was, among the people who couldn’t win any tickets, invited to take advantage of a second chance to purchase some of the remaining tickets which will be 2.3 millions for 311 of 650 events sessions (schedule), between June 24th to July 3rd. Some of the tickets with good availability are football tournament (1.7 millions – over the majority), boxing, Judo, synchronised swimming and volleyball. The tickets with low possibility are athletics, archery, fencing and beach volleyball (see the table below). You can get tickets if you are not picky, but I am wondering if we apply any, as M is not so keen to see any games…

The Independent launches ‘mini Indy’ on October 26

I found this newspaper ad today, of “i, which will go on sale on October 26. Created by the Independent, i will be the first quality daily paper to have launched in UK in almost 25 years, since the Independent itself in 1986.

→ See the past entry for more about British newspaper

i, published by Independent Print Limited, is a concise version of the Independent, and is designed for busy readers who are suffering from information overload and want a comprehensive digest of the news. This “mini Indy” is available on Mondays to Fridays, for just 20p, which is the same as The tabloid paper, The Sun. The owner Alexander Lebedev, a the Russian Billionare and former KGB agent, purchased the Independent this March for £1 (see past entry), after acquired the London Evening Standard for also £1 and made its distribution tripled by making the paper free of charge. He was expected to do something for the Independent as well, and now came up with this brilliant idea. It is also relatively risk-free for the publisher, making it with low additional cost by using news from the Independent. Let’s see if this “mini Indy” can help revive the underdog Independent, which has currently the lowest daily circulation among the UK quality national newspapers.

Boris Bikes’ Electronic Keys Arrived

We received two electronic keys on Saturday for London’s newly started public bicycle rental system “Barclays Cycle Hire” or “Boris Bikes”, after we applied on Thursday night, with an extraordinary speed in UK.

According to the Evening Standard article, more than 21,000 people have registered for the £140 million scheme so far, with around 6,000 trips a day being made. TfL (Transport for London) proudly announced that only three of the 5,000 bikes missing (it’s already stolen??) and no reports of vandalism. However, there are also some problems reported as you might have expected: some riders had been charged more than they used because they failed to redock the bikes properly and accidentally clocked up huge rental charges; and the TfL website froze yesterday and users today claimed their electronic keys were not working despite activating them online. With these complaints, TfL today urged riders to ensure they waited until a green light on the station illuminated, to confirm the bike had been redocked securely.

Another problem is that the daily or weekly subscription charge is automatically levied on all keys as soon as one is used, even if the others are not in use, for people who purchased multiple electronic keys from the same bank account. It means that if we don’t use Boris Bikes on the same day but one of us does, they will charge access fee for another as well?! The website doesn’t have any warning of the case! Do we have to apply another key again, to avoid the illegitimate charge?? It is a public fraud!

Although we received the keys, I am scared to use the bikes until all the problems solved…

There is a 7-digit registration number under the barcode. I erased 3 digits to protect our privacy for safety.
