2010 Angel Canal Festival @ Regent’s Canal

昨日、家のそばのRegent’s Canal（リージェンツ運河）を通りかかったら、毎年恒例のAngel Canal Festivalが行われていたので、ちょっと立ち寄ってみた。1980年代に始まったこのフェスティバルは、City Road Lock and BasinからPackington Parkの間のTowpath沿いに、慈善団体の資金集めのために食べ物や運河にちなんだ小物、工芸品、本などを売る約70の屋台が並び、Fun-fair（移動遊園地）、コンサート、Narrow Boat（ナロウボート、運河用の細長い荷役船）が体験できるボート・トリップ、そしてレガッタやボート・レースなど、一日中いろいろなイベントが開催される。

運営は主にボランティアでまかなわれ、入場料は無料。屋台からチラシまで、なんだか学園祭を思わせる手作り感満載で、よく言えばほのぼのしているというか、悪くいえば素人臭いというか。また来たくなるような魅力的なイベントとは言いがたいけれど、まあ皆頑張っているので、気持ちだけ、手作りマフィンとブラウニーを買ってフェスティバルを後にした。

屋台やイベントはともかく、イギリスの運河名物のナロウボートが結集するこのフェスティバル、興味のある人には面白いかも。£1のプチ・ボート・トリップでちょっとした運河体験をしたり、ボートを通すための閘門の開閉を見たり（写真下）、また現在は、住居や余暇の別荘、短・長期旅行用として使われていて、水洗トイレやシャワー、暖房、電化製品、衛星放送用アンテナ等も備えている、ナロウボートの中を見学できるのも、フェスティバルならでは。

Yesterday, we stopped at the annual Angel Canal Festival when we came back from lunch in Angel. This annual festival, started in 1980’s, is based around City Road Lock and Basin and along the tow path to Packington Park, and there are around 70 stalls selling from canalware and crafts, books, to refreshments, to raise funds for local and national charities. A variety of events are held all day such as fun-fair, music, boat trips and viewing of Community Boats, regatta and bell-boat race in the Basin.

The festival is run by volunteers, and an entrance is free. From the stalls to the posters and leaflets, everything about the festival was amateurish and handmade-ish, and it was like a typical community event or a high school festival. It was quite grungy in a way and it was not really attractive event that I want to come back every year, but I understand it is a non-profit local festival and the volunteers do their best. I just bought muffin and brownies, took a little stroll, and left the festival in 10 minutes.

The festival may be interesting for some, as Narrow Boats, one of the attractions in England’s canals, get together in one area. You can observe the narrow boats going through a lock gate (photo below), experience a mini boat trip with small money for £1, or observe inside of the boats that are now commonly used for holidays, weekend breaks or as permanent residences, equipped with modern convenience such as central heating, flush toilets, shower or bath, home electronics, satellite television and mobile broadband.

Whitecross Street Party “Rise of the Non-Conformists”

ロンドンの夏は、色々なフェスティバルやアート・イベント、コンサートなどイベントが盛りだくさん。今日、Whitecross Streetを通りかかったら、通り沿いの建物にカラフルなアート作品が。何事かと調べてみたら、ロンドン東部・南東部のアーティストやダンサー、ミュージシャンを取り上げた文化イベント・CREATE10の一環で、25・26日に行われたパーティを皮切りに、9月5日まで6週間開催されているストリート・アート・イベント、「Whitecross Street Party “Rise of the Non-Conformists”」だと判明。30人以上のストリート・アーティストの作品が通りのここかしこに飾られている。

でも、「Non-Conformists（型破りな人たち）」と言う割には、彼らの作品には新鮮味がないなあ。どこでも見かけるような、普通のグラフィティ／ストリート・アートだし。ステンシル・アーティストでこのイベントのキュレーターのTeddy Badenの作品は個人的に好きだけれどね（上から2つ目の写真の左）。

There are all kinds of events, festivals and concerts taking place in London in summertime. When we passed by Whitecross Street today, we saw colorful art works here and there on the building on the street. I was curious what it was, and found out that it is a 6-week art event Whitecross Street Party “Rise of the Non-Conformists”, started with street party on July 25 & 26, running until September 5. It is a part of CREATE10, a cultural program with home-grown talent from across east and southeast London, featuring more than 30 artists.

The festival is called “Rise of Non-Conformists”, but the artworks are kind of ordinary graffiti/street arts that you can see anywhere in London, and are sort of conformist in a way the street arts are – though I personally like the work of stencil artist and curator of the event Teddy Baden (in the second top photo on the left).

Carnaby Street 50th Anniversary

2010年は、カーナビー・ストリート（Carnaby Street）の50周年記念の年。60年代に、モッズやヒッピー・ファッションの中心地であったカーナビー・ストリートに、独立系のブティックやデザイナーたちが店を構え、また周辺の通りには、様々なアングラのミュージック・バーがあった。Wardour Streetの角にあった伝説的なクラブ・Marquee Clubでは、ビートルズやザ・フー、ローリング・ストーンズなどが演奏し、彼らがたむろしたカーナビー・ストリートは、スウィンギング・ロンドンで、もっともクールな場所になった。

今もカーナビー・ストリートは、ロンドンの代表的なショッピング・ストリートの一つで、いつも観光客や若者で賑わっている。メイン・ストリートであるカーナービー・ストリートや周辺の小さな通り、Kingly court（キングリー・コート）、Newburgh Quarter（ニューバーグ・クォーター）など一帯には、ファッションや靴などのショップなどのほか、カフェやバー、パブ、レストランが並ぶ。

50周年を記念し、2010年は1年を通して、ファッションやデザイン、音楽に関連したイベントやフェスティバルが行われる予定。写真は、2月から開催されている展覧会で、カーナビー・ストリートの16世紀から現在までの歴史、特に60年代を中心に解説している。空き店舗を利用したと思われるこの展覧会は、ちょっと薄暗〜い感じで展示品のサイズも小さく、スペースを有効利用できてない感じ。写真もファッションも、もっとたくさん展示してほしかった。でも奥の左にあるブースでやっている、カーナビー・ストリートの歴史のビデオはなかなか面白い。

Year 2010 is Carnaby Street‘s 50th Anniversary. By the 1960s, Carnaby Street became an iconic fashion destination for he Mod and hippie styles. Many independent fashion boutiques and designers were located as well as various underground music bars in the surrounding streets. With bands such as The Beatles, The Who, and Rolling Stones appeared in the area to work with the legendary Marquee Club located round the corner in Wardour Street, and shopped and socialized, it became one of Swinging London‘s coolest destination.

Today Carnaby Street is still one of the main shopping street in London and attracts many young people and tourists. The area including main Carnaby Street and surrounding streets as well as Kingly court and the Newburgh Quarter, offers fashion stores and boutiques as well as cafés, bars, pubs and restaurants.

Throughout 2010, Carnaby streets will host various events and festivals featuring fashion, design and music. Kicking off in February with an exhibition which includes a detailed history of the area, from the 16th Century to the present day, especially focusing on the sixties. This exhibition, using an empty store space, is a bit dark and the materials exhibited are rather too small. There is a big unused space in the middle and I wish they can show us more its iconic fashions and photos. However, I quite enjoyed the video being played on the back, showing the history of the street, especially during the hype in 60’s.

Taste of Christmas 2009 @ ExCel London

先週末12月4〜6日に、ドックランズ地区にあるコンベンションセンター、ExCel（エクセル・エキシビション・センター）で行われたTaste of Christmas（テイスト・オブ・クリスマス）に行ってきた。Taste of Christmasは、RoastやClub Gascon、Modern Pantryなど、ロンドンの14の有名レストランや、チョコレート、チーズ、ワイン、食材、台所用品等、国内外の150以上の食関係の店や会社が出店する大規模な食の祭典。会場内は、クリスマス用ショッピングにいそしむ人たちでごった返していて、お目当てのブースに近づくにも一苦労。試食や試飲も豊富で、会場を一周する頃にはにはお腹はいっぱい、すっかりほろ酔い気分だった。

Taste Festivalsが企画する「Taste」フード・フェスティバルは、ロンドンで夏（Taste of London）と冬（Taste of Christmas）の年2回ある他、国内ではバーミンガムやエジンバラ、海外でもオーストラリアやオランダ、南アフリカ、ニュージーランド、アラブ首長国連邦の9都市で、全13のフードフェスティバルが開催されている。私はたまたま無料チケットをもらったけれど、なんと入場料は前売りで£19、当日券で£22もする。けっこう無料券を配っていたり、2 for 1割引（2人で1人分）のプロモーションをしていたので、正規の値段を払って来てる人はあんまりいないんじゃないかと思うけど。会場内でも、当然物を買うのも飲んだり食べたりするのは有料。お店は現金やカードが使えるけれども、レストランのブースでは、Crown（2 crown = £1、£10/20 crown単位で買える）という会場内だけで使える通貨を買わないといけないといけくて、Crownが余らないように（または足りなくならないように）、計算しながら飲み食いしないといけないのが面倒くさい。どうして、決済に現金使っちゃいけないんだろう？変なシステムだわ。

I went to Taste of Christmas (Dec 4 – 6) at ExCel exhibitions and conference centre in Docklands, London. Taste of Christmas is one of the biggest food festivals in UK, and gathers London’s 14 popular restaurants and over 150 shops and companies selling food & drinks and anything related to food, together under one roof. It is perfect place to shop groumet foods for Christmas, from chocolate and sweets, cheese, chutneys and dips, cheese, wine and alcoholic drinks, to gifts and kitchen products. It was so full of people that it’s hard to approach to the booth I wanted to take a look at. There were plenty of samples and tastings, and I was quite full and tipsy when I came out of the exit.

Taste Festivals organizes 13 ‘Taste’ food festivals across the countries and abroad; twice in London summer (Taste of London) and winter (Taste of Christmas) as well as Birmingham and Edinburgh, and 9 oversea cities in Australia, Netherlands, South Africa, New Zealand, Ireland and UAE. I got complimentary tickets but normally the ticket costs £19 (£22 on the door)! I heard they gave away lots of complimentary tickets and had 2-for-1 offer, so I believe many people at the Taste of Christmas didn’t pay full amount of the ticket or at all. You have to pay food and drinks at the festival (of course) in addition to the entrance fee – so this expensive entrance fee seems quite a rip-off!  You can use cash as well as credit card at the shops, but you have to buy ‘Crown‘ when you want to eat from the restaurants booths. Crowns are the currency of Taste of Christmas (2 Crowns = £1), and come in booklets of £10/20 Crowns. It is really annoying system that you have to calculate to finish all the Crowns you have, or you have to buy an additional booklet of Crowns cost £10, if you don’t have enough Crowns to buy your food – why can’t we use cash???

ダンスがメインの劇場、Sadler’s Wells Theatre（サドラーズ・ウェルズ劇場）で開催中のSvapnagata Festivalの演目、「Akram Khan & Nitin Sawhney: Confluence」を見た。友人が、一緒に見る予定だった人が突然来れなくなったというので、講演の前日に誘ってくれたのだ。前から数列目と言うとても良い席で、パフォーマンスを目の当たりにできた。

Svapnagata（サンスクリット語で「Dreaming（夢見ている）」の意） Festivalは、２週間に及ぶインド音楽とダンスのフェスティバル。Confluence（26〜28日）はそのトリを務める公演で、世界初演となる。Confluence（合流、群衆、集合）は、Zero Degrees（ゼロ度・2005年）やBahok（バホーク・2008年）でも共作した、バングラデシュ系イギリス人のダンサー／振付師であるAkram Khan（アクラム・カーン）とインド系イギリス人の作曲家・Nitin Sawhney（ニティン・ソーニー）がコラボ。彼らのルーツである南アジアの文化的・精神的影響を探る作品だ。

ゼロ度は、私たちの好きなイギリス人アーティスト・アントニー・ゴームリーが製作した人形を舞台で使っているというので、同じくサドラーズ・ウェルズで見たのだが、その時に、カーンのダンスに初めて出会った。Confluenceでも彼の魅力は充分生かされ、北インドの古典舞踊カタック（Kathak）の踊り手でもあるカーンの、しなやかで力強いダンス、流れるような手の動き、ぶれない高速旋回、そして足に鈴をつけて踊るカタックの見事なステップが、半透明のスクリーンに幽玄的にぼんやりと浮かび上がる、スクリーンの後ろで演奏するミュージシャンたちの奏でるソーニーの美しい音楽と見事にマッチしていて、観客を魅惑・熱狂させた。古典舞踊とコンテンポラリー・ダンス、そして伝統的音楽と現代音楽を融合させた、素晴らしいパフォーマンスだった。残念だったのは、1時間ちょっとという短い公演時間。もっと見たかった！

I went to see “Akram Khan & Nitin Sawhney: Confluence“, a part of Svapnagata (meaning ‘dreaming’ in Sanskrit) Festival, two-week festival of Indian music and dance, at the Sadler’s Wells Theatre which specialises in dance. My friend asked me to join her the day before, as she got a spare ticket because her friend couldn’t make it. She got great seats which were only few rows away from the stage and we could see the performance up close.

Confluence (Nov 26 to 28), which was the festival’s climaxes and its world premiere, is a joint creation by Bangladeshi-British dancer/choreographer Akram Khan and Indian British composer Nitin Sawhney, who also previously collaborated in Zero Degrees and Bahok. In Confluence, Khan and Sawhney explore their cultural and psychological mix of influences.

I went to see Zero Degrees at the Sadler’s Wells because British Artist Antony Gormley was also involved in the creation, and it was my first experience with Khan’s mesmerizing dance. Khan, also a dancer of Northern Indian classical dance Kathak, showed us his elastic but powerful dance, streaming hand movements, stable high-speed turns, and beautiful steps of Kathak and the sound of the bells worn around his ankles, and these perfectly matched with Sawhney’s beautiful music on its simple stage. The scenes that silhouettes of musicians who were playing behind the screen came to dimly appear through the thin screen was pretty mysterious. It was a stunning performance which mixed classical Indian dance / contemporary dance and traditional music / modern music, and excited the audiences. I wish the performance was a bit longer (it was only 1 hour and 15 min)!
