Foyles Artist Panels @ 107-109 Charing Cross Road

W & G Foyle Ltd、通常略してFoyles（フォイルズ）と呼ばれるこの本屋は、William（ウィリアム）とGilbert（ギルバート）のFoyle兄弟によって、1903年に創業した。二人揃って公務員試験に失敗した後、使用済みの教科書を売る事を思いついたところ、たくさんの注文が舞い込み、彼らが家で古本業を始めるきっかけとなった。以前、50kmにも及ぶ本棚の専有面積と書籍の数で世界最大の書店としてギネスに登録されたこともある。

そのFoylesの旗艦店が2014年に、今までの場所である113–119 Charing Cross Roadから、すぐ近くのセントラル・セント・マーチンズ・カレッジ・オブ・アート・アンド・デザインの校舎だった1930年アールデコ様式のビル（107-109 Charing Cross Road）に移転・再オープンすることになった（詳細）。今年創業110年を迎えたFoylesは、ロンドンで開催される国際漫画フェスティバル・Comica festivalから14人のコミック・アーティストにFoylesの歴史を描いた作品を依頼、新店舗予定地を覆う計28枚のパネルが、通行人の目を楽しませている。Foylesのウェブサイトでも、アーティストのプロフィールと共に、フォイル家の台所から始まり、2014年にオープンする新店舗まで、その長い歴史を知ることができる。

無味乾燥な工事現場をカラフルなイラストで隠し、道行く人々に新しい店への期待を高めるという、とても賢く遊び心のあるやり方に感心。

W & G Foyle Ltd or simply Foyles, is a book seller, founded by two brothers, William & Gilbert Foyle in 1903. After failing civil service exams, they started to sell their used textbooks and were flooded by offers. This inspired them to launch a second-hand book business from home. Foyles was once listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the world’s largest bookshop in terms of shelf area (30 miles/50 km) and number of titles on display.

Foyles’ flagship store will be moving to a new location in 2014, just next door from 113–119 Charing Cross Road to 107-109 Charing Cross Road at the 1930s art-deco style former Central St Martins‘ building  (see the details here). Celebrating their 110-year anniversary this year, Foyles has commissioned Britain’s 14 comic artists from the Comica festival to tell the short history of Foyles in 28 panels, which decorate the hoardings around the new site. You can see them at their website with biographies of the artists: starting from its origins in the Foyle kitchen, through its various moves up and down Charing Cross Road, and ending with what the new Foyles building may look like when it opens in 2014.

This is a clever tactic to cover up the ugly construction site and make people interested in their new shop!

Benetton Oxford Circus Store Reopens

オックスフォード・ストリート辺りでショッピングする時に、立ち寄るお店の一つ、ベネトンのオックスフォード・サーカス店。高品質の生地を使った、エレガントでスタイリッシュなイタリアン・デザインの服がお手頃な価格で買える、ベネトン・グループのお姉さんブランド・シスレー（Sisley）が、お気に入りだ。店は改装工事のためにしばらく閉店していたが、先週19日に再オープンした（詳細）。

新しい装いのオックスフォード・サーカス店は、イタリア人建築家でデザイナーのピエロ・リッソーニがデザインを担当。19世紀の建物を、都会的で洗練された、ミニマリズム的空間に仕上げた。ベネトンの計画では、2009年のイスタンブール店を皮切りに、世界主要都市にあるベネトン旗艦店を、リッソーニとのコラボレーションで徐々に改装するそうで、オックスフォード・サーカス店もその一環。この計画によると各店のデザインは、その都市の文化を反映したものになるという。リッソーニによると、ロンドン店は「白黒を基調に、自然光、すっきりした線や形、シンプルな材料を使った、クリーンで上品なデザインを目指した」という。店内のレイアウトもゆったりしており、ロンドンのど真ん中だというのに、ゆっくり買い物できる。

ベネトンは、決して高級ブランドではないけれど、インテリアが素敵になると、置いてある商品まで洗練されて見えるから不思議だ。

The Benetton Oxford Circus store is one of our favorite stores and we often stop by the store when we go to Oxford Street. The store closed temporarily for renovation, but reopens on August 19th last week (details).  We like Sisley, the Benetton group’s high-fashion brand, as we can find elegant and stylish Italian-design clothes using good quality materials at affordable price.

The newly revamped Oxford Circus store is designed by Italian architect and designer Piero Lissoni, and he transformed this 19th-century building to a minimalist and sleek urban-chic space. The renovation of its Oxford Circus store is a part of an overhaul plan of Benetton’s flagship stores in world’s major cities, launched in Istanbul in 2009. With this plan, each store expresses the local culture. Piero Lissoni said,“For the London store, we wanted a clean and refined design using simple mediums: natural light, plain materials, clean lines and shapes, black, white”. The store layout is quite spacious, and you can shop at ease in the middle of chaotic Oxford Circus.

Benetton is not upscale brand, but their clothing range looks more sophisticated as its interior has been upgraded. I guess the store make-over really works.

Paperchase @ Tottenham Court Road

Paperchase（ペーパーチェイス）は、イギリスとアメリカに展開する大手文房具チェーン。文房具不毛の国・イギリスにおいて、ちょっとしゃれたデザインの、オリジナル文房具類やカード等が手に入る。駅構内やデパートのテナント、自社店舗合わせて、イギリスに80店以上ある。以前は親会社であるアメリカのブック・チェーン、Borders（ボーダーズ）内にも店舗を構えていたけれど（アメリカでも300店以上のBorders内に出店している）、Bordersのイギリス子会社が昨年末に破産し、イギリスにある全店舗が閉鎖されてしまったため、Paperchaseも繁華街の多くの店舗を失ってしまった。ちなみに、N1ショッピングセンターにあったBordersに入っていた店は、その向かいで最近閉店したブティック・Karen Millenの跡地に再オープンした。

写真は、南には電器店が、そして中程にはインテリア・ショップが並ぶトッテナム・コート・ロードにある、3階建ての旗艦店。1階は文房具やカード類、ラッピング用品等を扱い、2階は鞄や高級文房具、季節商品やセール品、カフェチェーンのCaffè Nero、3階は画材、工作・クラフト用品、画用紙等の紙類を扱う。大型文房具店が少ないロンドンにおいて、色々なものが一カ所で手に入る貴重なお店だ。

Paperchase is a stationery store chain operating throughout UK, and have expanded their business into the USA in their current parent company Borders Group‘s over 300 book shops. Paperchase has a range of original stationery and cards, an is one of the few stores I can find decent and designy stationery from UK. Paperchase has over 80 outlets; in train stations and some department stores, as well as their own stores. It also had concessions in Borders in UK, but as Borders UK went into administration in late 2009 and store closures followed, Paperchase lost a large presence on the British high street. There was one in the Borders store at N1 Shopping Centre in Angel, but the store moved in the space in the same shopping center, where used be a women’s clothing store Karen Millen which closed earlier.

The photos are of one of their 2 flagship stores in Tottenham Court Road, where electric stores in the south and interior stores in the middle. In the three-floor store, they carry stationery, greeting cards, gift wrappings on the ground floor, and bags, gifts, and seasonal and/or sale products on the first floor, and papers, crafts, and art materials on the top floor – very convenient place to find stationery and gifts in one place.
