Olympic Women’s Football Semi Final & Final @ Wembley Stadium

ロンドン・オリンピックが終わってしまった。イギリスの誇る歴代の大物歌手たちが登場した昨夜の閉会式は、ミュージック・フェスティバルか、日本で言うと紅白歌合戦特別版といった趣の、スポーツとはあまり関係のない演出だったけれど、懐メロから最新ヒット曲まで一挙に聞けて、イギリス人はかなり盛り上がったようだ。私達はというと、好みじゃない音楽を3時間も聞かされ飽き飽きしてしまったけれど。

期間中はテレビ、アプリ、ウェブを駆使してつぶさに結果をチェックしていたので、オリンピックが終わった今、大きな空虚感を感じる。一介の観客でさえそうなのだから、参加選手たちが燃え尽き症候群に陥ってしまう気持ちがよく分かる。

London Olympic is over. Last night’s closing ceremony was nothing much to do with sports but more like Diamond Jubilee Concert, but British seem to have fascinated to watch generations of big names singing old classics to latest hits, though we got a bit bored listening to the music I’d never heard and in fact those musics were not my cup of tea. Also I didn’t understand “Monty Python” part as I’ve never seen it, and I believe I am not the only one in the world.

I was into following the olympic games everyday on TV, web and Olympic apps, and now I feel empty. I am just an audience, but I completely understand some Olympic athletes experience burn-out syndrome after the Games.

時間は逆のぼるが、日本全国の期待を集めたなでしこが、プレッシャーにも負けず大活躍、決勝まで勝ち上がった。まだどのチームが勝ち上がるかも分からない次点で、願掛けも兼ねて買っておいたウェンブリー・スタジアムでの準決勝・決勝戦のチケットが無駄にならなかった。ちなみに準決勝のチケット代は最高Aクラスで1枚60ポンド、決勝は最高Aクラスで1枚125ポンド也。

This is retrospective story, but I want to share my experience in women’s football semi-final and final at London’s Wembley Stadium, after the quarter final in Cardiff. I bought those tickets before knowing who would play, hoping that Japanese team (aka Nadeshiko Japan) would go through. Since the historic victory against USA at last year’s Women’s World Cup, Nadeshiko Japan had been burdened with so much expectation and pressure from Japanese people (like Jessica Ennis for British), and they met their expectation. My tickets were not wasted after all – I paid £60 for semi-final and £125 for final for both A class tickets, and it was well worth it!

キャパシティ9万人でヨーロッパ第二位の大きさを誇り、サッカーの聖地とも呼ばれるウェンブリー・スタジアムでの準決勝の相手はフランス。ウェンブリー・パーク駅から続々と観客が集まってくる。

The semi-final was Japan vs France at the Europe’s second biggest Wembley Stadium with massive 90,000 capacity. People after people were coming toward the stadium from nearby Wembley Park station.

入口では、男女別にセキュリティチェックがある。通常、サッカーの試合は男性が多いのだけれど、さすがに女子サッカーなので女性が多数派。15分ほど並んでようやく通過。

There were separate search lanes for men and women. Normally majority of the football audience is men, but this time there were more women than men. I took about 15 minutes to go through the gate.

両国の国家斉唱。夕方5時スタートと時間が早いせいか、左右ゴール裏はほぼ空席、東京オリンピック誘致の垂れ幕がちゃっかり陣取る。奥のサイド席も空席が目立つ。

The time for national anthems of both countries before the game. Big chunk of seats were unoccupied, probably because the game started at 5pm and not many 9-5 working people couldn’t attend. You can see a banner “Tokyo 2020“, hold up by Japanese Olympic Committee gangs?

この日の観客数はなんと6万1482人。

Attendance of the match was 62,482. Wow!

最後はフランスの猛反撃にさらされながらも、2対1でなでしこが勝利。決勝進出を決める。

Nadeshiko Japan won 2-1, despite of fierce attack by France on the second half. Well done, girls!

いよいよ決勝戦。夜7時45分スタートで会社帰りの人も来られることもあり、準決勝より混雑している。

The final started at 19:45 and there were much more people coming than the semi final.

アメリカ国旗に身を包み、勝つ気満々のアメリカ人が目立つ。日本人サポーター、ちょっと気迫負け。。。

Americans, wrapped themselves with Stars and Stripes, were all pumped up and cheering everywhere, while Japanese supporters were quieter and less visible…

準決勝時と比べ、高級感漂うClub Wembleyレベル2。シャンパン・バーや座席サービスのレストランも。観覧席もクッション付きで、座り心地もベター。

In compared to Level 1 at the semi-final, Club Wembley level 2 area was more upscale, with a table service restaurant and a champaign bar. The padded seat here was more comfortable than Level 1 seat.

観客がパネルを掲げて「London 2012」を表示。昨年W杯来の日米因縁の対決とあって、女子サッカーとしては過去最高の観客数8万203人を記録。私の日本人の知り合いの80％（主観ですが）が来場、総数5万人と言われる在英日本人が勢揃いしたかと思うほど、多くの日本人が観戦した。

Audience put up the panels to show “London 2012”. The attendance of the match was massive 80,203, the record highest as a women’s football match. About 80% of my Japanese friends got the tickets, and there were so many Japanese in the stadium as if all 50,000 Japanese who live in UK came to the stadium.

2−0と先行され、健闘虚しく2−1で敗れる。試合後、アメリカのカーリ・ロイド選手さえ「アメリカがペナルティを取られなかったのはとてもラッキーだった」と認めているように、レフェリーがペナルティエリアでのアメリカ側のハンドを取らなかったことが悔しい。結果は同じだったとしても、勝利のチャンスはあったかもしれないと言うのが、ファンの正直な思い。アメリカは準決勝のカナダ戦でも、3−2でリードされている時に、カナダのゴールキーパーがボールを規定時間以上持っていたとしてフリーキックを与えられたり、カナダ側のハンドとして賛否両論のペナルティキックが与えられたりして、延長戦で勝利した（英語版Wikipedia）。なんとラッキーな（ちょっと嫌み）！でも、どうせ判定は変わらないのだし、カナダ選手達のようにはっきり文句を言うのではなく（このことでFIFAより懲罰を受けるかも）、レフェリーの判断を尊重したなでしこは賢明か。

表彰式では、人種差別容認発言やFIFA理事の不正疑惑で悪評高いFIFAのゼップ・ブラッター会長に大きなブーイング。そもそもこの日のことも、ゴール判定技術やビデオ判定などに消極的なFIFAの責任なのだ。ブーイングも当然。

Nadeshiko Japan lost 2-1, despite of their continuous attacks during the game. As a Japanese supporter, I was quite upset that the German referee didn’t give a penalty to USA for the handball in the penalty area made by Tobin Heath, although it might haven’t affected the result. In fact, replays showed a clear handball, and even Carli Lloyd admitted  in post-match interviews that the USA were very lucky to go unpenalized. There was also another controversy about what happened during the semi-final, favouring to US against Canada. Lucky you, Americans! (see details on Wikipedia) But Japanese players were wiser just accept the referee’s judgement, in compare to Canadians who raised their doubts against referee, which risk them a disciplinary action by FIFA. And at the end, the result won’t change anyway. But I feel very sorry for Canadians.

There was big booing against unpopular president of FIFA, Sepp Blatter who attended the medal ceremony. At the end of the day, everything is FIFA’s fault refusing to introduce technological assistance such as  goal-line technology or video replays to avoid misjudgement, for some strange reasons.

試合直後は涙に暮れた彼女たちも、表彰式では晴れ晴れとした素敵な笑顔。スコア上では負けたけれど、試合内容は互角かそれ以上。強い団結力と勝利への思い、小さい体でデッカいアメリカ人選手たちと戦う姿は、見る者皆に勇気と感動を与えてくれた。最高のオリンピック経験をさせてくれてありがとう！

After lots of tears, the girls showed us great smiles at the medal ceremony. Although they lost, the game was neck and neck or they played even better, for my eyes. Great teamwork and determination. Small Japanese players who played with big Americans gave all Japanese the courage and power. Thank you for such a wonderful Olympic experience to us!!

。。。とここまでは良かったけれど、準決勝も決勝も、試合の後が悪夢。何万人と言う人波が最寄りのWembley Park（ウェンブリー・パーク）駅に押し寄せ、身動きできない。しかも準決勝の日は、信号機の異常かなんかで（よくあることだが）メトロポリタン線に遅れが出た。駅への沿道はフェンスでブロックされているので、列を抜け出すことも出来ない。決勝戦の後、通常45分ほどの道程を、2時間かけて夜1時にやっと家に帰り着いた。楽しかったけれど、疲れた。。。

But this is not the end of the story – coming back home was a true nightmare for both days. Tens of thousands of people rushing to the station stuck and couldn’t move for a while. Metropolitan line had problem of signal failure after the semi final, which often happens here in London. The path to the station was blocked on the sides and couldn’t escape once you went inside. It took two hours to go back home after the final which normally takes only 45-minutes, and it was 1 am when I finally reached home. The game was exciting, but it was exhausting as well…

Olympic Women’s Football Quarter Final @ Cardiff Millenium Stadium

私のオリンピック体験２番目は、ウェールズの首都・カーディフのミレニアム・スタジアムで行われた女子サッカー準々決勝、日本対ブラジル戦。カーディフまではパディントン駅から電車で2時間ちょっと。Super Off-Peak Returnという混雑時以外に使用できる割安切符でも往復£67.50（約8250円）かかる（see past entry for more about train fare）。ロンドンの会場で行われる試合は、チケット代にゾーン1〜9内乗り放題の1日券が含まれているのに、ロンドン以外の会場だと何もなし。甚だ不公平だ。そもそも「ロンドン・オリンピック」と銘打っているにも関わらず、男女ともサッカーの試合は、ウェンブリー・スタジアムで行われる数試合を除き、グラスゴー、ニューカッスル、マンチェスター、コヴェントリー、カーディフと、ロンドン以外のスタジアムで行われる。ロンドンは、ウェンブリー・スタジアムに加え、3万5000人以上収容できる大規模スタジアムが５つもあるのに（エミレーツ・スタジアム、スタンフォード・ブリッジ、ホワイト・ハート・レーン、ブーリン・グラウンド）、どうしてオリンピックで使用わないんだろう？LOCOG（ロンドンオリンピック・パラリンピック組織委員会）が、他都市にもオリンピック気分を味わってもらうためにそうしたのではないかと勝手に推測しているのだけれど、各地への移動を強いられる選手たちやサポーターにとっては、移動時間も出費もかかるし、たまったもんじゃない。

でも、2−0で日本が勝ったし、カーディフの人たちは皆フレンドリーだったし、翌日カーディフ観光も楽しんだということで、無駄足ではなかった。またカーディフ観光については後日書きます。

My Olympic game no.2 was the women’s football quarter final at Millennium Stadium in Cardiff. Cardiff is about two hours away by train from London Paddington station, and it cost £67.50/pp for Super Off-Peak Return fare, which is cheaper than normal fare but not cheap for supporters travelling from London (過去のエントリー. It is unfair that an Olympic ticket for any London venue includes one day travel card which you can travel free of charge within zone 1-9 (basically anywhere in London), but nothing for non-London venue. It’s a bit strange as it is called ‘London’ Olympic, but most of the Olympic football games both women’s and men’s tournaments are held outside London, except some at Wembley Stadium; in Glasgow, New Castle, Manchester, Cardiff and Coventry. London has five large football stadium with a capacity of over 35,000; Wembley Stadium, Emirates Stadium, Stamford Bridge, White Hart Lane, and Boleyn Ground, and I don’t understand why these stadium can’t be used for the Olympics! I guess that LOCOG intends to share some excitement with other British cities, but it is not nice for footballers and supporters who have to travel all over the country to see the games.

However, Japan beat Brazil 2-0 and we enjoyed sightseeing of Cardiff the day after, so it was worth it at the end of the day. And everyone was nice in Cardiff :) I will talk about my trip to Cardiff later.

England’s Nightmare of Penalty Shootout Again…

昨日行われたEURO 2012準々決勝で、イングランドは延長の末０−０で迎えたPK戦で、イタリアに惜しくも敗れた（詳細）。Three Lions（イングランド王室紋章に描かれた３匹のライオンからきた、イングランド代表チームのニックネーム）は、2007年から監督を務めたファビオ・カペッロが今年2月に突如辞任、5月に任命された新監督ロイ・ホジソンの準備不足は否めず、下馬評は低かったのだが、予想以上の活躍でグループリーグを1位突破。急に盛り上がりを見せ、昨夜の試合の最高瞬間視聴率は2320万人、実にテレビ視聴者の77％が見ていた計算で、昨年4月のRoyal Wedding（ウィリアム王子の結婚式）の最高瞬間視聴率1990万を超え、EURO 2004のポルトガルとの準決勝以来過去8年最大の視聴率を記録した（BBCニュース）。残念ながら8年前もPKで敗れたのだが。。。

国際大会のトーナメント戦でPK戦決着方式が導入され、イングランドが初めてPKを戦った1990年以降、8回あった大きな国際大会でのPK戦は1勝7敗（参考：englandfootballonline.com）。平均PK勝率は17％と、イングランドチームはPK戦となるとからきし弱いのである。これに対し圧倒的に強いのがアルゼンチン（73％）とドイツ（71％）、イタリアは日本と同じ33％（参考：penaltyshootouts.co.uk）。過去のPK戦がトラウマになっているイングランド代表選手たち、禅寺にでも行ってメンタル面を鍛え、PKへの恐怖を克服しないと、1966年のワールドカップ以来の悲願の国際大会優勝は無理そう。。。

A nightmare of PK happened again to Three Lions – England lost to Italy at yesterday’s EURO 2012 quarter final, after frustrating 120 minutes of 0-0 score and heartbreaking several minutes of penalty shootout. England fans’ expectation to their team was rather low before EURO 2012 started, as former manager Fabio Capello left the team this February and new manager Roy Hodgson who appointed just in May didn’t have enough time to build up the team. On contrary to the pessimistic prediction, England managed to finish top of Group D, and a fan’s hope came back. The game with Italy was the most watched event on TV in 8 years since when England lost to Portugal in EURO 2004 (…again with PK), with the 23.2 million peak audience. This number beat the 19.9 million peak achieved by last year’s Royal Wedding (BBC news).

Since England’s first penalty shoot-out in 1990, England have played eight big international matches which have gone to a penalty kick shootout, but the team won only once (englandfootballonline.com). In compare, Argentina (73%) and Germany (71%) are the top two countries with highest penalty shootout win/loss record. Italy has only 33%, but double of England’s 17% (penaltyshootouts.co.uk). The team seems to be traumatised by the past results, but unless the players mentally train themselves and overcome their fear of PK, the glory of 1966 may never happen again…

World Cup Football Fans VS Royal Ascot Attendees

サッカーファンがワールドカップで盛り上がる中、中・上流階級のお方々が熱狂するのが、昨日15日から始まったRoyal Ascot（ロイヤル・アスコット）。バークシャーにあるアスコット競馬場でイギリス王室が主催する、1711年から続く歴史ある競馬レースで、The Royal Meeting（ロイヤル・ミーティング）とも呼ばれる。世界で最も有名な競馬レースの一つで、毎年30万人以上がロイヤル・アスコット・ウィークに訪れる。ウィンザー城に程近く、5日間の会期中、エリザベス女王や王室メンバーが城から馬車でレース観戦にいらっしゃる（噂によると女王は競馬が非常にお好きだそうだ）。

このレースがイギリス社交界のメインイベントで、毎年メディアがレース自体よりも注目するのが、観戦する王室メンバーや有名人たち、そして観戦者たちのファッション。王室関連の伝統あるレースだけあって、ドレスコード（服装規定）があり、Grandstandと呼ばれる高級席では、男性は正装が求められる。きちんとしたシャツとネクタイは必須、スーツやジャケットがあればなお可。気合いの入った英国紳士たちは黒またはグレーのモーニングにベストとシルクハットできめている。スポーツ着やジーンズ、短パンは厳禁。女性はスマートな装いに、強制ではないけれども帽子があればなお良い。特に木曜日のレディースデー（Ladies Day）では、色とりどりに華やかに着飾った女性たちが、こぞってユニークで変わったデザインの帽子を披露する（写真はこちらから：Daily Mail／The Guardian）。

While foootball fans are crazy about the England games during this World Cup, another group of people are fascinated by Royal Ascot, started yesterday on June 15. Also known as the Royal Meeting, Royal Ascot is one of the world’s most famous race meetings dating back to 1711, and is held at the Ascot Racecourse in Ascot, Berkshire. Every year over 300,000 people visit to the racecourse during Royal Ascot week. It is only six miles from Windsor Castle, and Queen Elizabeth II and various members of the British Royal Family attend the race, arriving each day in a horse-drawn carriage (it is known that the Queen loves a horse race).

It is a major event in the British social calendar, and usually press coverage of the celebs and rich and famous attendees and their fashions exceed actual racing. Dress code of this prestigious races sounds a bit old fashioned. ‘Gentlemen’ in the more expensive Grandstand Admission area must wear a shirt and tie, preferably with a suit or jacket. Sports attire, jeans and shorts are strictly forbidden. True British gentlemen wear more formal, a black or grey morning dress with top hat. ‘Ladies’ are required to dress in a manner appropriate to a smart occasion, and many wear hats although this is not compulsory. Especially on Ladies Day usually held on Thursdays, smartly dressed women compete each other with their unique, or eccentric sometimes, hats with all sorts of design and colors (see more photos: Daily Mail / The Guardian）

同じ時期に開催中といえど、ワールドカップのイングランド・ファンたちとは、まるで別世界。イギリスでは、一般的に、サッカーは労働者階級、ラグビーやクリケットが中・上流階級のスポーツとされているけれど、2つのイベントの写真が共にスポーツ欄を埋め尽くすあたり、イギリスの階級社会がまだ明らかに存在していることを感じさせる。

Though happening at the same time, Royal Ascot is totally different planet from Word Cup 2010. Generally football (soccer) is considered as a sport for working class, while rugby and cricket are for middle class and upper class. These two completely different worlds covering sports section of the news make me realize that UK is still a firm class society at large.

Thierry Henry’s ‘Hand Of God’ and Not-So-Fair World of Sports

先日18日に行われた2010年ワールドカップ（Ｗ杯）の欧州予選プレーオフ、フランス対アイルランドの第2戦で、フランスが延長戦の末、ティエリ・アンリのハンドで得たゴールで1−1の引き分け、ワールドカップ行きのチケットを手に入れた件で、「正義感の強い」イギリスメディアは連日大騒ぎだ。スポーツ欄だけではなく、ニュース欄でも大きく取り上げている。このハンドはビデオで見ても明らかにハンドなのに、レフェリーが見逃した。アイルランドサッカー協会（IFA）は国際サッカー連盟（FIFA）に抗議、再試合を申請したが、FIFAは却下、フランスサッカー連盟（FFF）も拒否した。全て予想された結果だ。アイルランドも勝ち目なしと、早々に諦めたようだ。試合の後、インタビューを受けたフランス人ジャーナリストは、ワールドカップでは大きなお金が動くし経済効果も大きいので、FFFは絶対再試合を受け入れないと断言していた。その通りだった。これが逆の立場だったら、どうなっていただろうと思う。

当のアンリはハンドは認めてるけど、審判の責任だからと謝ってないし、「再試合がフェア」と言ってるけど、それもFIFAが再試合拒否の裁定を出してからだ。代表辞退も考えたらしいけど、結局辞めないし。自分のイメージ挽回のために、口先だけで適当に言い逃れて、ほとぼりが冷めるのを待ってるんだろう。

八百長とまでは言わないけれど、都合のいい結果を正そうとしないその後のFIFAの対応が、やはりスポーツも所詮ビジネス、影響力のあるサッカー強国に有利な世界なのねと思わせる一件だ。The Sunday TImesで、興味深い「陰謀説」記事を見つけた。元フランス代表のミシェル・プラティニ欧州サッカー連盟の会長の手引きによって、今回のプレーオフは、強国に有利になるように、くじ引きではなく、世界ランキングの高い国と弱い国が当たるシード方式を採用したと言われている。強国に有利になるようにしているのには、高額のテレビ契約料やスポンサーの思惑も絡んでいるのかもしれない。また、プラティニ会長もFIFAのジョセフ・ゼップ・ブラッター会長も、ビデオ判定導入には何故か消極的だ。確かに、偶然にしては、なんだかうさんくさい。

フランスとイギリスのメディアの論調の違いも面白い。フランスは自国チームのふがいなさを酷評しつつも、FIFAやFFFの決定には異議はないようだ。かたやイギリスメディアは、「Cheat（いかさま）」「Fallen Idol（堕ちたアイドル）」等と手厳しい。これはアングロサクソンとラテンの価値観の違いか。ルールや公正さを重視するアングロサクソンに比べ、ラテン人は自分が良ければ全て良し、「運も実力のうち」「神様の思し召し」「ラッキー♪」って感じだろう。

またイングランド人には、この1件が、1986年ワールドカップ準々決勝で、マラドーナの「神の手」ゴールで、イングランドがアルゼンチンに敗れた悪夢を思い起こさせる。自国のことでないのに今回の大騒ぎは、このことも多いに関係してるのだと思う。

フランスは、対戦相手が多少なりとも自制心のあるアイルランドで良かったと胸を撫で下ろしてるだろう。これがエジプトやアルジェリアが相手だと大変なことになっていたかもしれない。サッカーの世界での権力のなさでワールドカップ行きを逃した、アイルランドチームが本当に気の毒だ。

There has been a huge media frenzy in UK about the Thierry Henry’s ‘Hand Of God’ during Ireland vs France World Cup 2010 play-off on November 18th and it’s aftermath: since France won a ticket to South Africa with 1-1, thanks to Henry’s ‘cheating’ act. UK media with “strong sense of mission to pursue justice” have been putting up big articles about  this incident, not only in sports sections but also in general sections, everyday since then. You can see clearly that it was handball, but the referee missed to see this crucial foul or chance to correct the mistake. Irish Football Association (IFA) demanded a rematch, but FIFA and the French Football Federation (FFF) said ‘NO’ – but it is all expected. IFA seems to give up already because they know that it is a fight they will never win. After the game, a French journalist who was interviewed by BBC said that FFF would never accept a replay, because big money and industries involved and economic effect would be enormous. He was right. But what it would happen, if France lost with Irish footballer’s  handball – would FIFA give the same judgement?

Henry admitted his handball but never say sorry. He said that replay would be fair for Ireland but AFTER FIFA and FFF refused a rematch. It was reported that he considered quitting “Les Bleus” but he decided to stay anyway – all talks doesn’t convince me if he is truly remorseful, but I believe he is saying whatever to repair his image and just waiting for everyone to forget about his ‘mistake’

I don’t call it setup, but FIFA and FFF’s reluctance  to correct their convenient result is truly disappointing, and now I strengthen my belief that soccer is just another business, and always a stronger with bigger political power wins – fair play is a mere myth for important games like this. I read an interesting article by the Sunday Times “Conspiracy or coque up?” The play-offs were seeded on the basis of world rankings in favour of the bigger nations, and it was reported that the proposal to introduce seeding had come from UEFA (president is former French player Michel Platini). Why? Could it be related to the advance long-term television contracts, or the influence by one of a big sponsor which will possibly gain huge profit if France win? For some reason, Platini and FIFA president Sepp Blatter are said to be reluctant to introduce video technology, which can bring fairer judgement – why? Maybe a coincidence, but all these things sound pretty dubious.

Also it is very interesting to see the different stances between British and French media. Though French media criticizes their team done terrible in the game but they don’t attack the FIFA and the FFF of their judgement. On the other hand, British media is harsh on Henry as ‘cheat’ or “fallen idol,’ as well as on the FIFA. Probably this is due to the difference in Anglo-Saxons and Latins mentality: in compare to Anglo-Saxons’ values in fairness and justice, Latins would just think, “luck is also a part of his ability” “miracle” “godsend” – they would never criticize someone who give them a jackpot, even though from a devil.
