Olympic Women’s Football Semi Final & Final @ Wembley Stadium

ロンドン・オリンピックが終わってしまった。イギリスの誇る歴代の大物歌手たちが登場した昨夜の閉会式は、ミュージック・フェスティバルか、日本で言うと紅白歌合戦特別版といった趣の、スポーツとはあまり関係のない演出だったけれど、懐メロから最新ヒット曲まで一挙に聞けて、イギリス人はかなり盛り上がったようだ。私達はというと、好みじゃない音楽を3時間も聞かされ飽き飽きしてしまったけれど。

期間中はテレビ、アプリ、ウェブを駆使してつぶさに結果をチェックしていたので、オリンピックが終わった今、大きな空虚感を感じる。一介の観客でさえそうなのだから、参加選手たちが燃え尽き症候群に陥ってしまう気持ちがよく分かる。

London Olympic is over. Last night’s closing ceremony was nothing much to do with sports but more like Diamond Jubilee Concert, but British seem to have fascinated to watch generations of big names singing old classics to latest hits, though we got a bit bored listening to the music I’d never heard and in fact those musics were not my cup of tea. Also I didn’t understand “Monty Python” part as I’ve never seen it, and I believe I am not the only one in the world.

I was into following the olympic games everyday on TV, web and Olympic apps, and now I feel empty. I am just an audience, but I completely understand some Olympic athletes experience burn-out syndrome after the Games.

時間は逆のぼるが、日本全国の期待を集めたなでしこが、プレッシャーにも負けず大活躍、決勝まで勝ち上がった。まだどのチームが勝ち上がるかも分からない次点で、願掛けも兼ねて買っておいたウェンブリー・スタジアムでの準決勝・決勝戦のチケットが無駄にならなかった。ちなみに準決勝のチケット代は最高Aクラスで1枚60ポンド、決勝は最高Aクラスで1枚125ポンド也。

This is retrospective story, but I want to share my experience in women’s football semi-final and final at London’s Wembley Stadium, after the quarter final in Cardiff. I bought those tickets before knowing who would play, hoping that Japanese team (aka Nadeshiko Japan) would go through. Since the historic victory against USA at last year’s Women’s World Cup, Nadeshiko Japan had been burdened with so much expectation and pressure from Japanese people (like Jessica Ennis for British), and they met their expectation. My tickets were not wasted after all – I paid £60 for semi-final and £125 for final for both A class tickets, and it was well worth it!

キャパシティ9万人でヨーロッパ第二位の大きさを誇り、サッカーの聖地とも呼ばれるウェンブリー・スタジアムでの準決勝の相手はフランス。ウェンブリー・パーク駅から続々と観客が集まってくる。

The semi-final was Japan vs France at the Europe’s second biggest Wembley Stadium with massive 90,000 capacity. People after people were coming toward the stadium from nearby Wembley Park station.

入口では、男女別にセキュリティチェックがある。通常、サッカーの試合は男性が多いのだけれど、さすがに女子サッカーなので女性が多数派。15分ほど並んでようやく通過。

There were separate search lanes for men and women. Normally majority of the football audience is men, but this time there were more women than men. I took about 15 minutes to go through the gate.

両国の国家斉唱。夕方5時スタートと時間が早いせいか、左右ゴール裏はほぼ空席、東京オリンピック誘致の垂れ幕がちゃっかり陣取る。奥のサイド席も空席が目立つ。

The time for national anthems of both countries before the game. Big chunk of seats were unoccupied, probably because the game started at 5pm and not many 9-5 working people couldn’t attend. You can see a banner “Tokyo 2020“, hold up by Japanese Olympic Committee gangs?

Level 1 seating area during the half-time. There were queues everywhere at food & drink sections as well as toilets (especially for women).

この日の観客数はなんと6万1482人。

Attendance of the match was 62,482. Wow!

最後はフランスの猛反撃にさらされながらも、2対1でなでしこが勝利。決勝進出を決める。

Nadeshiko Japan won 2-1, despite of fierce attack by France on the second half. Well done, girls!

いよいよ決勝戦。夜7時45分スタートで会社帰りの人も来られることもあり、準決勝より混雑している。

The final started at 19:45 and there were much more people coming than the semi final.

アメリカ国旗に身を包み、勝つ気満々のアメリカ人が目立つ。日本人サポーター、ちょっと気迫負け。。。

Americans, wrapped themselves with Stars and Stripes, were all pumped up and cheering everywhere, while Japanese supporters were quieter and less visible…

準決勝時と比べ、高級感漂うClub Wembleyレベル2。シャンパン・バーや座席サービスのレストランも。観覧席もクッション付きで、座り心地もベター。

In compared to Level 1 at the semi-final, Club Wembley level 2 area was more upscale, with a table service restaurant and a champaign bar. The padded seat here was more comfortable than Level 1 seat.

観客がパネルを掲げて「London 2012」を表示。昨年W杯来の日米因縁の対決とあって、女子サッカーとしては過去最高の観客数8万203人を記録。私の日本人の知り合いの80％（主観ですが）が来場、総数5万人と言われる在英日本人が勢揃いしたかと思うほど、多くの日本人が観戦した。

Audience put up the panels to show “London 2012”. The attendance of the match was massive 80,203, the record highest as a women’s football match. About 80% of my Japanese friends got the tickets, and there were so many Japanese in the stadium as if all 50,000 Japanese who live in UK came to the stadium.

2−0と先行され、健闘虚しく2−1で敗れる。試合後、アメリカのカーリ・ロイド選手さえ「アメリカがペナルティを取られなかったのはとてもラッキーだった」と認めているように、レフェリーがペナルティエリアでのアメリカ側のハンドを取らなかったことが悔しい。結果は同じだったとしても、勝利のチャンスはあったかもしれないと言うのが、ファンの正直な思い。アメリカは準決勝のカナダ戦でも、3−2でリードされている時に、カナダのゴールキーパーがボールを規定時間以上持っていたとしてフリーキックを与えられたり、カナダ側のハンドとして賛否両論のペナルティキックが与えられたりして、延長戦で勝利した（英語版Wikipedia）。なんとラッキーな（ちょっと嫌み）！でも、どうせ判定は変わらないのだし、カナダ選手達のようにはっきり文句を言うのではなく（このことでFIFAより懲罰を受けるかも）、レフェリーの判断を尊重したなでしこは賢明か。

表彰式では、人種差別容認発言やFIFA理事の不正疑惑で悪評高いFIFAのゼップ・ブラッター会長に大きなブーイング。そもそもこの日のことも、ゴール判定技術やビデオ判定などに消極的なFIFAの責任なのだ。ブーイングも当然。

Nadeshiko Japan lost 2-1, despite of their continuous attacks during the game. As a Japanese supporter, I was quite upset that the German referee didn’t give a penalty to USA for the handball in the penalty area made by Tobin Heath, although it might haven’t affected the result. In fact, replays showed a clear handball, and even Carli Lloyd admitted  in post-match interviews that the USA were very lucky to go unpenalized. There was also another controversy about what happened during the semi-final, favouring to US against Canada. Lucky you, Americans! (see details on Wikipedia) But Japanese players were wiser just accept the referee’s judgement, in compare to Canadians who raised their doubts against referee, which risk them a disciplinary action by FIFA. And at the end, the result won’t change anyway. But I feel very sorry for Canadians.

There was big booing against unpopular president of FIFA, Sepp Blatter who attended the medal ceremony. At the end of the day, everything is FIFA’s fault refusing to introduce technological assistance such as  goal-line technology or video replays to avoid misjudgement, for some strange reasons.

試合直後は涙に暮れた彼女たちも、表彰式では晴れ晴れとした素敵な笑顔。スコア上では負けたけれど、試合内容は互角かそれ以上。強い団結力と勝利への思い、小さい体でデッカいアメリカ人選手たちと戦う姿は、見る者皆に勇気と感動を与えてくれた。最高のオリンピック経験をさせてくれてありがとう！

After lots of tears, the girls showed us great smiles at the medal ceremony. Although they lost, the game was neck and neck or they played even better, for my eyes. Great teamwork and determination. Small Japanese players who played with big Americans gave all Japanese the courage and power. Thank you for such a wonderful Olympic experience to us!!

。。。とここまでは良かったけれど、準決勝も決勝も、試合の後が悪夢。何万人と言う人波が最寄りのWembley Park（ウェンブリー・パーク）駅に押し寄せ、身動きできない。しかも準決勝の日は、信号機の異常かなんかで（よくあることだが）メトロポリタン線に遅れが出た。駅への沿道はフェンスでブロックされているので、列を抜け出すことも出来ない。決勝戦の後、通常45分ほどの道程を、2時間かけて夜1時にやっと家に帰り着いた。楽しかったけれど、疲れた。。。

But this is not the end of the story – coming back home was a true nightmare for both days. Tens of thousands of people rushing to the station stuck and couldn’t move for a while. Metropolitan line had problem of signal failure after the semi final, which often happens here in London. The path to the station was blocked on the sides and couldn’t escape once you went inside. It took two hours to go back home after the final which normally takes only 45-minutes, and it was 1 am when I finally reached home. The game was exciting, but it was exhausting as well…

The Tallest Building in Europe, The Shard Opens

イタリア人建築家レンゾ・ピアノがデザイン、カタールからの投資金£15億をかけて建設されたヨーロッパ一高いビル（309.6m）、The Shard（シャード：破片の意）の落成式が昨日行われた。夜10時15分から始まったレーザーショーがロンドンの夜空を彩ったが、何かの問題で予定通りいかなかったらしく、その評判は芳しくない（independent紙）。ちょっと遠いけれど、うちのバルコニーからシャードのてっぺんが見えるのだけれど、確かに、ここから見てもテレビ映像を見ても、パッとしなかったかも（上のビデオ参照 / 写真）。

シャードは、上から居住フロア、シャングリラ・ホテル、レストラン、最下部はオフィスが入居している。地上約244mの68〜72階にある展望台「View from The Shard」からは最大64kmまでの景色が楽しめ、いつも大口をたたくボリス・ジョンソン市長によると、天気のいい日はフランスも見えると言う（本当か？！）。

展望台は来年2月1日から一般公開される予定で、今日から前売り券の販売が始まった。チケットの予約はシャードのウェブサイトまたは電話（0844 499 7111）で受け付ける。お値段は大人£24.95・子供£18.95と、London Eye（ロンドン・アイ、スタンダードチケット£15、エッフェル塔（€14＝約£11)、また世界一高いタワーで地上450mの東京スカイツリー展望回廊（3000円＝約£24.15）より高い。それでも今日だけで1万7500人もの人が前売り券を購入したという。これはぼったくりだ！と思う方、ロンドン観光の予算が少ない方は、このウェブサイトで、もっとお安くロンドンの景色を楽しめる場所をチェックしてみて。

£1.5 billion funded by Qatari investors and designed by Italian architect Renzo Piano, the tallest building in Europe (309.6m / 1016ft), the Shard was inaugurated yesterday. A light and laser show to celebrate the opening started at 10:15pm yesterday night, but they failed to illuminate the skyline as planned and it didn’t seem to impress spectators (independent). We can see a tip of the Shard from our balcony, and I saw some laser light and also the footage on TV, but it was just ordinary and boring, not spectacular as they claimed… →more photo

The Shard houses residences, Shangri-la hotel, restaurants and offices (from the top to the bottom). From the View from The Shard observation platform in the 68th-72nd floors which some 244m (800ft) high, guests are able to see up to 64km (40 miles) away, and even France when is a clear day, according to the Mayor Boris Johnson.

The View from The Shard will be open to the public from February 1 next year, and from today pre-booking tickets are available through the Shard website or via the box office hotline (0844 499 7111). The tickets cost £24.95 for adults and £18.95 for children, which is much more expensive than London Eye (Standard Ticket £15), the Eiffel Tower (€14 = about £11), and even the tallest tower in the world, new TOKYO SKY TREE Tembo Galleria at 400m higher from the ground (¥3000 = about £24.15)! Over 17,500 people had already registered to secure tickets in advance of their release today. Wow. If you are a budget traveller or think this is a rip-off, check here for alternative ideas to enjoy London’s skyline.

Printers & Stationers Café @ Ezra Street (near Columbia Road)

ハックニーのEzra Streetにある小さなカフェ・Printers & Stationersは、コロンビア・ロード近くでバイクの駐車スペースを探している時に偶然見つけた。名前の表す通り、元々印刷業者と文具商の作業場だったこの店は、フランス産の食料品と主にフランスの小規模ワイナリーのワインを扱う店として2011年6月にオープン。コロンビア・ロードでフラワー・マーケットが開かれる日曜には、アンティークも店頭に並び、ワイン・テイスティングを催すこともある。私たちが行った時は、誰もワインを飲んでいなかったので、てっきりカフェだと思っていたけれど、ウェブサイトを読むと、カフェと言うよりどうやらワイン店／ワインバーらしい。オーナーは、小さい頃お小遣い稼ぎにワイン畑を手伝った事もある、シャンパーニュ地方出身のフランス人。1996年にロンドンに来てから、イギリスでは手に入りにくいシャンパンの輸入ビジネスを始め、2007年にロンドンの南東部のBrockleyにDegustationというフランスの食料品を売る店をオープンした。

店内は、古い雑貨に囲まれたフランスの田舎の食料品店兼家屋という趣きで、奥では毛布の敷かれたベッドで犬が気持ち良さそうに寝ている。フード・メニューは、チーズやハム、サラミ類、クロックムッシュやサンドイッチなど。暖かくて天気が良かったので外のテーブルに座ったけれど、奥にも小さな中庭やバーエリアがある。Mのランチはハムとチーズの典型的なフランス風サンドイッチ。私の注文したクロックムッシュは想像としていたもの（ウィキペディア）と違い、普通のトースト・サンドイッチ（写真下）だったけれど、美味しかったから許す。

開店時間：水〜金曜12〜20時 /土曜午後12〜19時 /日曜はフラワーマーケットの開かれる時間帯

We found this small café, Printers & Stationers on Ezra Street in Hackney, when we were looking for a motorcycle parking. As its name suggests, this warehouse space started as a printers and stationers workshop. Since June 2011, Printers & Stationers sells French grocery & handpicked wines from small and independent producers mainly in France, as well as antiques during the flower market on nearby Columbia Road on Sundays. They also organize wine tastings. The owner is French from Champagne region, who earned some pocket money by working in the vineyard when he was little. Since coming to London in 1996, he started champagne import business and opened a French grocery shop ‘Degustation‘ in 2007 in Brockley. First I called this place a café, but I read the description on their website, it seems more like a wine shop or an enoteca. Anyway, no one was drinking wine when we were there.

The inside of Printers & Stationers filled with bric-a-brac, looks like an old-style grocery shop with living space on the back in French countryside. A cute family dog was sleeping at the back, comfortably in his cozy bed with layers of blanket. The shop offers a selection of cheeses and charcuterie as well as croques monsieur and some sandwiches. We sat outside as it was warm and sunny. There is also a small bar area and the little patio garden inside. M ordered typical French sandwich with ham & cheese. My croques monsieur (bottom photo) was not what I expected (Wikipedia) but normal toastie, but it is OK as it was good.

“Joan of Arc: Voices of Light” by London Symphony Orchestra @ Barbican Centre

先日日曜日、バービカン・センターで行われた、London Symphony Orchestra（LSO：ロンドン交響楽団）のコンサート「Joan of Arc: Voices of Light」を観に行った。このコンサートでは、カール・ドライヤー監督のサイレント映画「裁かるゝジャンヌ（1928年）」の映像を背景に、アメリカ人作曲家のRichard Einhorn（リチャード・エインホーン）がこの映画に影響を受けて1994年に作曲したオラトリオ・「Voices of Light」を、女性指揮者Marin Alsop（マリン・オールソップ）率いるLSOが演奏した。

「裁かるゝジャンヌ」では、大天使ミカエルの「声」を聞き、百年戦争の際、イングランドによる支配からフランスを救った英雄ジャンヌ・ダルクが、敵対するブルゴーニュ軍に捕らえられてイングランド軍に引き渡された末、異端審問裁判で「悪魔の子」の烙印を押され、火刑に処せられるまでが描かれている。ラテン語と古フランス語で書かれた、聖書やジャンヌ・ダルクを含む中世の女性による著作からの引用で構成された詞は、ソロイストとコーラスによって美しく歌い上げられ、そのミニマルで荘厳な音楽からは、白黒の映像と相まって、若干19歳で悲劇の最後を迎えたジャンヌの恐怖と苦しみが切なく伝わってくる。YouYubeでもこの映画と音楽のコラボが見れるので（リンク）、ご興味ある方は是非！

We went to London Symphony Orchestra (LSO)’s “Joan of Arc: Voices of Light” at the Barbican Centre last Sunday. In this concert, live performance by a leading female conductor Marin Alsop and LSO of Richard Einhorn‘s oratorio “Voices of Light” (1994),  inspired by this classic film, was accompanied screening of the  Carl Theodor Dreyer‘s silent film “The Passion of Joan of Arc ” (1928).

“The Passion of Joan of Arc ” is a story of Joan of Arc,  a national heroine of France and a Catholic saint, who heard the voice of  Saint Michael and liberated France from English occupation during the Hundred Years’ War. It summarises the time from the Rehabilitation trial after being captivated by English and Burgundian to imprisonment, torture, and the execution by burning.

A libretto in Latin and antique French from the writings of Joan of Arc, medieval mystics and the Bible, was sang beautifully by soloists and chorus. This minimalistic and solemn score, together with the black and white classic silent masterpiece, was deeply moving and vividly conveyed the fear and emotional suffering of young Joan, who once was a savior of France but whose life was tragically terminated with only an age of 19 by one of the most agonising way.

Castles (near) Kent : Bodiam Castle

シッシングハースト城から車で20分程のところにあるBodiam castle（ボディアム城）は、正確に言うとケント州ではなく、隣のイースト・サセックス州にある。このお濠に囲まれた四角形のお城は、エドワード3世に仕えた騎士・Edward Dalyngrigge（エドワード・ダリングリッグ）により、百年戦争におけるフランスの侵略からの防衛、そしてステータスと富を象徴する彼自身の住まいとして、1385年に建立。四角形という構造上、防護壁と中庭に沿って、様々な部屋が作られた。Dalyngrigge家が途絶えると、婚姻関係によってLewknor（ルークノー）家の手に渡り、16世紀までその所有下にあったが、その後は様々な所有者を経た末、1643年に取り壊され、廃墟となった。1829年にJohn Fuller（ジョン・フラー）に買い取られ、Fullerを含む、George Cubitt（ジョージ・キュビット）初代Ashcombe（アシュコム）男爵、ジョージ・カーゾン (初代カーゾン・オヴ・ケドルストン侯爵)と続いた所有者の手で一部修復された。カーゾン侯爵の死後、1925年にNational Trust（ナショナル・トラスト）に寄贈され、第一級指定建造物、指定遺跡として保護されている。

廃墟に近いと言えど、いくつかの部屋と塔は観光客に開放されている。お城の歴史を展示や15分間のDVDで学んだり、狭くて急な螺旋階段を上り、塔の上から景色を眺めるのもいいし、お城に続く橋の上で観光客が投げ入れるパン屑などに群がるたくさんの鴨や鯉を見るのも楽しい。子供たちは、広大な芝生の上や、ドイツ軍の襲撃（結局ドイツ軍は来なかったらしいけれど）に備えて敷地内に作られた第二次世界大戦中の小さな要塞の中で歓声を上げている。とてものどかで風光明媚なお城。

Bodiam castle, 20-minute drive from the Sissinghurst Castle, is located in neighboring East Sussex, not in Kent. This quadrangular-shaped moated castle was built in 1385 by Sir Edward Dalyngrigge, a former knight of Edward III, as his home to show off his status and wealth and as a defence against French raid during the Hundred Years’ War. Chambers were built around the outer defensive walls and inner courts. After Dalyngrigge family’s line became extinct, the castle passed by marriage to the Lewknor family, who had owned the castle until at least the 16th century. Since then, Bodiam had been on different hands and was dismantled in 1643. It was left as a ruin until its purchase by John Fuller in 1829, but was partially restored by Fuller, George Cubitt, 1st Baron Ashcombe, and then the last owner of the castle, Lord Curzon. It has been owned by the National Trust since 1925, donated by Lord Curzon on his death, and is protected as a Grade I listed building and Scheduled Monument.

Although quite knocked down, towers and some rooms, where you can learn the history of Bodiam on 15-minute DVD as well as exhibition, are open to public. You may want to walk up narrow and steep spiral staircases to the top of the towers, where you will be rewarded with wonderful views. You can enjoy watching dozens of desperate ducks and carps fighting for food thrown by visitors on the bridge which connects the park and the castle. Kids can play on the grass surrounded the castle and around the WWII bunker built in the castle ground against German invasion, which never occurred. Very peaceful and picturesque castle.
