Another Sunday Market @ Shoreditch

Pizza Eastでロンドンでの今年初のランチをとった後、ぶらぶら歩いて、Shoreditch High Street駅から東、ブリックレーンに連なる道に出ているマーケットを見て歩いた。昨年、Shoreditch High Street駅がオープンしてますます再開発が進み、ヒップでトレンディになりつつあるショーディッチにおいて、猥雑なイースト・ロンドン的雰囲気を色濃く残すこのマーケットは、かなり衝撃的。駅の横の果物・野菜の屋台を皮切りに、日用品や電化製品、文房具、自転車用品、古着、アンティーク、中古家具まで、日常生活に必要な物が何でも手に入り、イタリアやフランスの食品を売る屋台もある。が、売っている物の多くは、安物かガラクタ、もしかすると盗品も混じっているかもしれない。

We walked around a market on a street connecting Shoreditch High Street station and Brick lane, after the first lunch in London this year at Pizza East. It is quite a shock to see such a market with stereotypical chaotic East London atmosphere in Shoreditch, where is becoming trendy and hip after a series of redevelopment projects together with an opening of the new station last year. Starting with fruits and vegetable sellers next to the station, you can basically buy anything you need for daily life from household products, home electronics, stationaries, bicycle parts, used clothing and accessories, second-hand furniture, antiques and all kinds of bric-a-brac, as well as Italian and French food – but unfortunately mostly cheap stuffs and junk, or even possibly some stolen things.

何故か、自転車パーツを売る店が多い。Brick Laneは盗難自転車を売っている事で密かに有名だが、そこで買った中古自転車をチューンアップするためか。

There are some vendors selling bicycle parts. Is it for a tune-up of a bicycle purchased from Brick Lane (known for selling stolen bikes)??

駐車場と思われるスペースに入ると、そこは品物が無造作に置かれ、ゴミが散乱するワイルドな空間。服や靴、がらくたが積んである入口には人だかりが。この中から何をどうやって探すんだろう？？

When we entered a space supposedly used as a car-park on non-market days, it was a chaos – products and trashes were all over the place. There was a mountain of clothes, shoes and bric-a-brac. How on earth people find anything from it??

この無秩序さは、ロンドンというより、発展途上国のマーケットのよう。

This sort of disorder is more like a market in developing countries, rather than London.

雑多な人々、品物に圧倒される。友人や観光客にお薦めするようなマーケットではないけれど、ロンドンにはこういうところもあるという事で。

We were overwhelmed by people and stuffs. I don’t necessarily recommend the market for tourists or friends, but just to show another side of London, for your interest.

FoodHall Deli & Café @ Old Street, Shoreditch

ホクストン・スクエアの近く、オールド・ストリート沿いにあるFoodHallは、総菜や生鮮食品、ケーキ類やその他グルメ食料品を扱う高級デリ＆カフェ。店の奥とそこから出入りする中庭に、イートイン用スペースもある。チェルシーの高級住宅地あたりにありそうなこのお店は、高級住宅地とは言いがたいエッジーなエリアにありながら、そこそこ人が入っている。一般的に、置いてある商品は、値段が高い。最初の頃、値札にあまり気をとめず、オーガニックの牛乳や卵、肉類を買って、レジで合計を見てびっくりした。同じオーガニック製品を買うなら、ウェイトローズで充分。だから最近は、もっぱらケーキやパンのみを買っている。このエリアにしては値段は高いけれど、味には定評があり、甘すぎず上品な味で病みつきになる。私はここのバナナのパウンドケーキやラズベリーのフィナンシェなど、シンプルなケーキが好きだけれど、前に買ったチーズケーキもかなり美味しかった。チャバッタも外はパリっ、中はしっとりしていて、お薦め。軽くトーストしてオリーブ油につけて食べると、美味しい。

ただ、ここの店員は、はっきり言って愛想がないし気が利かない。今日も、この間買ったチャバッタがカチカチに堅かったので、買い物ついでに苦情を言ったら、心のこもった謝罪もなく、「たまに日付の古いものが混ざっているから、次から触って確かめてから買うように」と言われた。「品質チェックは店の仕事だろう！！』と言いたかったが、ぐっと我慢。今日は柔らかさを確かめてから買ったチャバッタを手に、店を後にした。こういう非常識な対応はさすがに初めてだったけれど、ここの慇懃無礼な対応はちょっと鼻につく。店のウェブサイトをネットを探していた時に見つけた店のレビューを読んでいたら（肝心のウェブサイトは見つからなかった）、同じ風に思っている人が何人もいて、私だけじゃないんだとちょっと安心した。

サービスの悪さと値段の高さがネックだけれど、それでもやっぱりケーキの味に惹かれて、時に足が向いてしまうのだ。

FoodHall on Old Street near Hoxton Square, is a deli and café, offering a variety of gourmet foods such as freshly prepared food, sandwiches, sliced pizza, pastries & bread, as well as fruits & veg, fresh meat & poultry, cheese and others. There are also eat-in areas on the back and in the courtyard. This posh deli, which looks like the one in an expensive area somewhere in Chelsea, attract a certain crowd in this edgy neighborhood. In general, their products are quite expensive, and you may even think that they are over-priced. First time I visited the store, I bought some groceries like organic milk, eggs and some meat without paying attention to their price tags, and I was surprised by its total at the cashier. Now I don’t buy those ‘organic’ products as I can find good ones at Waitrose with better prices, but still I can’t miss their cakes and bread. Though more expensive than the average price in the area, but its sophisticated taste and perfect sweetness worth the price. I like their simple cakes such as banana sliced cake and raspberry financier, but their cheesecakes I bought before were excellent as well. I also recommend their ciabatta bread, crispy outside and soft inside. It tastes better if you lightly toast it and dip it in extra-virgin olive oil.

But another big minus at FoodHall as well as their price is their often unfriendly and impolite staff. We went to buy ciabatta at FoodHall today, and complained about a rock-hard ciabatta we bought the other day. But we were just told, “next time, touch and check the bread before you buy, as sometimes old stocks mix with the new ones” – without sincere apology. We almost screamed to the guy, “that’s the store’s job to check whatever they sell!!”, but managed to control ourselves and left with newly purchased nicely baked ciabatta. Of course we checked its hardness before we bought. This is our worst experience at the store, but I’ve never impressed by their customer service. I was relieved to know that we are not the only one – I found some reviews about the store while I was looking for the store’s website (but I couldn’t find it), and some people complain the same thing!

Although I don’t like the store’s unpleasant attitudes and expensive prices, their sweets are truly irresistible and go back at the end…

Organic Vegetable Box by Abel&Cole

毎週水曜日、Abel&Coleというオーガニック食品宅配会社から野菜の詰め合わせとスパークリングウォーター６本が配達される。重い野菜と水（Mはスパークリングウォーターなしでは生きていけません！）を買いに行かなくてもいいのでとても便利。私は、Essential Organic Veg Box（旬の野菜８種類、£11.95、2〜3人家族用）とSmall Mixed Organic Fruit & Veg Box（旬の野菜５種類とフルーツ３種類、£10.95、1人用）を１週間交代で注文。今週のEssential Organic Veg Boxは、にんじん、カリフラワー、リーク（Leeks、大型のネギ）、マッシュルーム、じゃがいも、ズッキーニ、アボカド、そしてパースニップ（Parsnips、白っぽい、にんじんのような野菜）だった。普段は野菜８種類なのですが、今日は間違えて１品多く入っていた。ラッキー！

野菜嫌いの私にとって、毎週野菜が届くと、食べないともったいないので、健康のためと思って頑張って食べている。嫌いなもの、好きなものも登録できて、嫌いなものは宅配から外され、好きなものはなるべく入れてくれるように配慮してくれるが、イギリスの冬野菜は苦手なものが多いので、冬はすべて消化するのに一苦労。野菜好きなMに無理矢理食べさすことも。見たことも聞いたこともない野菜が届いたりすると、ネットでレシピを探して作ってみるけれど、何せ食べたことがないので失敗することも多々ある。またイギリス野菜については、おいおいご紹介していきますね。

We receive a box of organic vegetables and 6 bottles of sparkling water from Abel&Cole, an organic grocer for delivery, on every Wednesday morning. It is very convenient so that I don’t have to carry heavy veg and water (M cannot live without sparkling water) back home. We order an Essential Organic Veg Box (feeds 2-3 people, £11.95, includes 8 seasonal veg) and Small Mixed Organic Fruit & Veg Box (feeds 1 person, £10.95, 5 veg and 3 fruits in the box) delivered alternately. This week box includes carrots, cauliflower, leeks, mushrooms, parsnips, potatoes, white onions, avocados, and zucchinis. We received 9 veg instead of 8 this week by mistake – today is a lucky day!

I am not a big fan of veg, but it forces me to eat veg so I continue the delivery for my health. You can register dislikes and likes – they can remove your dislikes from the box and add likes whenever possible. It is more difficult to consume all the veg in the winter as we don’t like British winter veg much, and I sometimes force M to finish all (sorry – but good for him!!). When I receive veg that I have never had and have no clue how to cook, so I check up the internet recipes but often fail to make edible food… I will talk more about British veg later in my blog.
