OPEN HOUSE Pop-Up Shop by John Lewis @ N1 Shopping Centre, Islington

House by John Lewisという新しい家庭用品・家具ブランドの販促のために、大手デパートチェーンのジョン・ルイスが10月18日、イズリントンのN1 shopping centreに「Open House by John Lewis」というpop up shop（期間限定ショップ）をオープンさせた。

House by John Lewisは、最新のデザイン製品を手頃な価格で提供する、新しい自社ブランド。IKEAやHabitatと同じコンセプトで、見た目も似ている。IKEAは郊外に店舗があるから客の奪い合いにはならないかもしれないけれど、繁華街に店舗を持ち、既に経営危機にあるHabitatにとっては、強力なライバル出現だ。以前、色々お世話になったHabitatには同情するが、弱肉強食の社会、力と金があるものが勝つのが世の習いだから仕方ない。

11月10日まで、Open Houseは店内のコーヒー＆ジュースバーと共に、毎日朝10時から営業している。店ではまた、映画上映（火曜日）、ストリートフード料理教室、カクテル等のドリンクがタダのOpen House Party（毎金曜日）など各種イベントが催され、全て無料。日曜日は、ボードゲームで遊ぶことも出来る。さすがイギリスが誇るジョン・ルイス。太っ腹だ。

On October 18th, Department store chain John Lewis opened a temporary pop up shop, ‘Open House by John Lewis’, in Islington’s N1 shopping centre, to promote its House by John Lewis homewares and furniture range.

House by John Lewis is a range of modern but affordable products for a contemporary home. Look exactly like IKEA or Habitat. IKEA shops in suburbia don’t have to go on a turf war with John Lewis, but already troubled Habitat stores on high street must see it as a new powerful competitor. As once a fun, I feel very sorry for Habitat, but this is life.

Open House, as well as a coffee and juice bar in the shop, is open from 10am every day until November 10. The shop also hosts free events regularly, such as Tuesday night film screening, a street food workshop, and Open House Party every Friday with free drinks. On Sundays shoppers can enjoy board games and Bloody Marys. How generous they are!

Design Store Chain Habitat will be sold to Argos Owner!!

今日のニュースによると、イギリスのデザイン家具ショップのチェーン、Habitat（ハビタ。過去のエントリー1/2/3）が破産。 Argos（アーゴス）やHomebase（イギリスの大手ホームセンター・チェーン）を所有するHome Retail Groupが、Habitatブランドとトッテナムコート・ロード店、キングス・ロード店、フィンチリー・ロード店の計を3店舗を、2,450万ポンドで買収すると言う。この3店舗以外の全国30店はしばらく営業を続け、買い手を捜すそうだが。。。ここ数年、セールばっかりやってるなあと思っていたら、やはり経営状態は思わしくなかったようだ。

不況のせいもあるけれど、BBCニュースによると、サー・テレンス・コンランによって1964年に設立された当時は斬新であったモットー、「good design, affordable for all（良いデザインを手頃な値段で）」と言うコンセプトは、IKEAをはじめとして、今やいろんなお店が真似るようになってしまったことも原因の一つだそう。Habitatには度々お世話になっていたので、将来なくなってしまったらとても悲しい。。。

According to today’s news, British design furniture chain, Habitat (past entry 1/2/3) goes into administration. Home Retail Group, owner of Argos and Homebase, will buy the Habitat brand and three central London stores (Tottenham Court Road, King’s Road and Finchley Road) for £24.5m. The remaining 30 UK stores will trade as usual while the administrator talks to potential buyers. Habitat has been having ‘sale’ all the times in these years, and it is true that the chain hasn’t been doing well.

Not only the recent recession is the reason for their failure, but also the store’s concept “good design, affordable for all” was innovative and original when Sir Terence Conran set up the chain in 1964, but now other stores also take the same strategy and some, like IKEA, even sell ‘design’ products cheaper. I will be quite sad if the Habitat stores will disappear in the future…

Tina, We Salute You @ Dalston

このブログを通じて知り合ったブロガーから教えてもらって、前から気になっていたカフェ、Tina, We Salute Youに行ってきた。前にも一度行ったのだけれど、あいにくサンドイッチが売り切れていたので退散。今回は食べ物はまだあったけれど、小さなお店はほぼ満席、相席をお願いして何とか腰を落ち着けた。何か印象が違うなと思ったら、壁が塗り替えられていた（写真下）。今の方がシンプルで断然いい。

ミッド・センチュリーの中古家具やアンティーク風の食器類は、なかなかセンス良し。新鮮な材料を使った手作りサンドイッチも、甘すぎずふんわり仕上がったチョコレートケーキも、共に合格点。今まで書いてきたコーヒーが美味しいカフェで、Union Hand Roastedと共に高いシェアを誇るSquare Mileのコーヒー豆を使い、これまたこれらのカフェで高い使用率を誇る、エスプレッソ・マシンのフェラーリ・La Marzoccoでいれたコーヒーも美味しい。

周りには何もない住宅地なのに、行った2回とも満員御礼。その後も客が入れ替わり立ち替わりやってきた。ブリック・レーンで日曜に開かれるSunday UpMarketで、カップケーキを売る屋台から始まったというTina, We Salute You、今ではすっかり地元の人気店に成長した。美味しい食べ物とコーヒーがあれば、お店がどこにあっても人はやってくるんだという一例だ。少し分かりにくい場所にあるので、行く時は地図検索してからどうぞ。

We finally made to sit down at Tina, We Salute You, a café one of the blogger recommended me for great espresso. We tried there once, but we left without ordering anything, as lunch time was over and no food was left. This time we almost missed to experience the café again as it was nearly full, but we asked other customers to share the table and we made it! I thought something was different, and I realized the wall was repainted (photos below), since the first visit. It’s simple and impressive, and much better than before!

The café’s antique tableware and mid-century style second-hand furniture are very nice. Handmade sandwiches with fresh ingredients passed the test, and their great chocolate cake was smooth and moderately sweet so that I don’t have to feel too much guilt to finish the treat. Another great thing was their espresso – brewed with Ferrari of espresso machine La Marzocco, using coffee beans from an established coffee roaster Square Mile, which has a big share together with Union Hand Roasted at the cafés that I wrote in the past where you can have a great cup of coffee.

Tina, We Salute You is in the middle of boring residential area, but it was full on both days we went. Even after we sat down, new customers came in constantly. Starting from a cupcake stall in Sunday UpMarket near Brick Lane, the café is grown up to become a favored place in the neighborhood. This proves a golden rule of successful café – people will come as long as it offers great food and coffee, no matter where it is. Tina, We Salute You is a bit hard to find, so don’t forget to search a map before you go.

HEL YES! Design and Food from Helsinki: London Design Festival 2010

家の近所に、何度も描いては上描きされてきた、グラフィティのメッカ？がある。元はRentokilの倉庫だったこの建物、David Choeの作品が描かれていた時にブログに書いたが（過去エントリー）、その後、銃のアウトラインの中に地図を画いた、PURE EVILの「MURDER MILE」が取って代わり、少し前に、新しい作品を描いている場面に遭遇したので、写真を撮った。いつものグラフィティかと思ったら、普段は閉まっている建物に人が出入りしている。新しいギャラリーかお店がオープンするのかと疑問に思っていたが、9月14日、Daily Candyのニュースレターで、その謎がついに解けた。

There is a Mecca for Graffiti artists near our home, where several graffitis overpainted by the new one on the former Rentokil depot. Since I talked about David Choe‘s work last year (past entry), PURE EVIL’s MURDER MILE took over the space, and recently I photographed someone working on the new project. I thought it was just another graffiti, but since then there had been people coming in and out from this normally empty building, and we were expecting an opening of a new gallery or shop. Then on September 14, the mystery was solved, by Daily Candy’s daily newsletter.

London Design Festivalの一環として、フィンランド最高の食とデザインを紹介するレストラン＆展示スペース「HEL YES!」が、9月15日から10月3日までの水曜から日曜日の14日間という期間限定でオープンしたのだ。ヘルシンキで人気のレストラン「Ateljé Finne」や「Kuurna」を手がけるAntto MelasniemiとFinnish Instituteがロンドン・デザイン・フェスティバルのために企画、イギリスで活躍するイラストレーターのKlaus Haapaniemi（クラウス・ハーパニエミ）とアート・ディレクター＆コンセプトデザイナーのMia Walleniusなどが加わって作り上げた。Iittala（イッタラ）とArtek（アルテック）が特製の家具や照明、食器などを用意。またその他の照明デザインや、家具、制服なども、フィンランドのデザイナーが特別に製作した。

家も近いし、フィンランド料理なんてあんまりお目にかかることがないので、行ってみたいなと思ったけれど、既に期間中の予約は一杯、写真を撮るだけで終わった。食事しなくても、中の見学や、コーヒーやドリンクの注文は出来るそう。昨日書いたWenlock Armsの目と鼻の先、またVictoria Miro Galleryも近いので、期間中近くに来ることがあれば、３つセットでお試しあれ。

As a part of the London Design Festival, “HEL YES!“, a temporary restaurant and exhibition showcasing the best Finnish food and design, opens just 14 days, Wednesday to Sunday from September 15 to October 3. The Finnish Institute and Antto Melasniemi who manages Helsinki’s popular restaurants “Ateljé Finne” and “Kuurna“, planned and created together with UK-based fashion illustrator Klaus Haapaniemi, an art director & concept designer Mia Wallenius and others. Iittala and Artek supplied exclusive customized furniture, lighting and tableware, and the lighting design, furniture and staff uniforms were designed exclusively for HEL YES! by leading Finnish contemporary designers.

We wanted to make a reservation since it is nearby, and it is a rare occasion to try Finnish food, but this temporary restaurant is fully booked during the period – so we just took some photos. But HEL YES! is open without booking for viewing, coffee and drinks. It is just few steps away from the Wenlock Arms I wrote yesterday, and the Victoria Miro Gallery is around the corner – why don’t you try these three as a set, if you are around during the event?

Habitat @ Tottenham Court Road

南には電器店が、そして中程にはインテリア・ショップが並ぶトッテナム・コート・ロードにあるHabitat（ハビタ）。少し前、黒のポリエステルでコーティングされたワイヤ製の台所の水切りラック（CACTI）を£8（約1150円）で買ったのだが、3月3日から始まった春のセールで、2割引の£6.40になっていた。なかなかおしゃれだし、家のシンクにぴったり合うサイズで重宝しているけれど、ちょっとショック。しかも、友人のプレゼントに定価で買ったのと同じものが、半額になっていた。彼女がお店に行って値段を見たら、セコいプレゼントだと思われそうで嫌だなあ。

When we need something for home, I go to Habitat on Tottenham Court Road, where there are electric shops on the south and interior shops in the middle. Few weeks ago I bought polyester coated wire dish drainer CACTI for £8, but the price has been slashed 20% to £6.40, since big spring sale started on March 3rd. I am a bit disappointed but more than that, the present for my friend I bought for full price also became half price. I hope my friend wouldn’t see the price tag and think that I am stingy for her…

お手頃価格で素敵なデザインの商品が買えるので、Habitatにはたびたびお世話になっている（過去のエントリー参照）。しかし、2004/05期から赤字が続いていて、昨年12月には、Habitatの前オーナーでIKEAの創業者ファミリーの経営する会社IKANOもお手上げとなり、経営再建のスペシャリストであるHilcoに売却された（関連記事）。最近はしょっちゅうセールをしたり割引券がメールで送られてきたりしていて、このセールも、通常のセール時期と違うし下げ幅も大きいし、何だか必死な感じ。また、この時ロンドンにいなかったので知らなかったのだけれど、Habitatは昨年6月、TwitterでアップルやiPhone、昨年のイラン総選挙などに言及した「Hashtags」を使って、トピックとは全然関係のない自社製品を宣伝していたとして批判を浴びたという（関連記事）。今のところ閉店の予定はないそうだけれども、業績が好転しなくて倒産、ということにならないといいのだけれど。

I like Habitat, because I can buy sleek home products for reasonable price (see my past entry). But Habitat is not doing well in the last few years and has been recorded a loss since 2004/05, and  in December 2009, the former owner of IKANO, owned by the IKEA founder Kamprad family, sold the company to Hilco, a restructuring specialist (see the related article). Recently Habitat does sale often and also send out an e-mail newsletter with discount voucher. This sale during an unusual period offers quite big discount. I didn’t know the news as we were not in London, but in June 2009, Habitat was criticized for taking advantage of the list of trending topics, including hashtags referring to Apple and the iPhone as well as the 2009 Iranian election protests, on the social-networking service Twitter to promote its products (see related article).  I am wondering if Habitat is desperate. It is sad that Hilco is not thought to be planning the closure of any shops, but hopefully Habitat survives…
