Curio Cabal Café @ Kingsland Road, Haggerton

Fabrica 584からキングスランドロードを南下すると、リージェンツ運河の手前に、この夏オープンしたCurio Cabalがある。シンプルでリラックスした雰囲気のこの小さなカフェ＆ギャラリースペース、La Marzoccoで淹れたMonmouth coffeeや美味しい紅茶類、品数は少ないけれどサンドイッチや日替わりスープ、ケーキ等がいただける。取り立てて何もないエリアだけど、万が一にもこの辺でカフェを探すことがあれば、ご参考に。

Going down to the south on Kingsland Road from Fabrica 584, you will see a café just opened this summer, Curio Cabal, in between Haggerston Overground station and the Regents Canal. This relaxed small café & gallery space offers a selection of sweet and savoury bites, as well as Monmouth coffee brewed with La Marzocco and a range of fine teas. It is situated in the middle of nothing, butif you happen to be there and need a decent café, just in case.

Other Cafe & Gallery @ Balls Pond Road, Dalston / Kingsland Road

OvergroundのDalston Junction駅から西へ徒歩数分のところにある、カフェ＆ギャラリー・Other。地上階・地下と2フロアある店内は、アンティークの家具や小物が、無造作に見えるけれどちゃんとバランスを考えてセンスよく配置されており（Mura Interiors）、それら調度品を見ているだけでも楽しい。晴れた日は入口横の大きな窓から太陽が燦々と注ぎ、ほっこりと午後のひと時を過ごせる。

ウェブサイトには、「イングリッシュ・ブレックファストから、南米料理やイタリアンまで、バラエティ豊かで新鮮な手作り料理」を出すとある。実は昨年10月に一度行って以来Otherには行っていないんだけれど、その理由はここのお料理がイマイチだから。スープとペンネ・カルボナーラ（下写真）は、眉目麗しいけれど、味にパンチがないと言うか味が薄いし、ペンネは茹で過ぎ。生ハムとトマトのパニーニ・サンドイッチはトーストされておらず、ボソボソしていて、これまた味がない。お店の雰囲気も居心地もいいだけに、リピートできないのはちょっと残念。あともう一つ、ギャラリーの展示作品（ウェブサイト）がお店の雰囲気にマッチしていない気も。

Walking few minutes to the west from Dalston Junction Overground station, you see Other Cafe & Gallery on the right side. Consisting of 2 floors, ground floor and downstairs, the place is decorated by Mura Interiors with antique furniture and bric-a-brac, looking randomly but meticulously in good balance & taste. It is fun just looking at those old items, and also you can enjoy lazy afternoon with plenty of sunshine coming through big windows next to the entrance.

Other’s website says that they offer a variety of fresh home-made food, from traditional English breakfast to Italian and South American dishes. To say the truth, we’ve never come back there after we went once last October, simply because their food was not impressive. Soup and penne carbonara (photo below) looked good, but were tasteless and uninspired. Panino with ham and tomatoes was not toasted and very dry and, again, no taste. The space is nice and cozy, and it is a shame that we can’t come back because of their food. Another thing is the artworks at the gallery don’t seem to match the atmosphere of the place (see website)…

Giuseppe Penone: Spazio di Luce @ Whitechapel Gallery

友人に誘われて、Whitechapel Galleryで展示中のイタリア人アーティスト・Giuseppe Penone（ジュゼッペ・ペノーネ）の作品「Spazio di Luce (Space of Light/光の空間)」を見に行った。

イタリアの芸術運動・アルテ・ポーヴェラのメンバーであるペノーネは、45年以上に渡り、人間と自然との関係を追求。今年のBloomberg Commissionのために、空洞になっている内部が金箔で覆われた、12mもの長さのブロンズ製の木「Spazio di Luce」を制作した。この作品は、本物の木に薄くワックスを塗った彼の1969年の作品「All the Years of the tree plus one」を元に、木の代わりにブロンズを使用。自身が山で見つけてきた木を、ブロンズの型取りをしやすいような大きさにカットし、動物のように木が自身で立つように、余分な枝も取り除いた。最初のレイヤーは筆で、そしてその上から手でワックスを塗ることで、表面には制作に関わった人たちの多くの指紋が、記念のように残っている。内部は、いにしえより、生命の源と考えられていた太陽の光と連想されていた金で彩られていて、入口から見ると、中全体が見渡せるようになっている。

もしこの作品のことを何も知らなければ、本物の木と見まがうかのような素晴らしい出来。木の持つ生命力さえ感じられる気がする。訪れた人の一人は、内側に向かって鼻歌を歌い、その反響を楽しんでいた。とてもダイナミックで、生命力にあふれた、見るものに活力を与えてくれる作品。

I went to see a work by an Italian artist Giuseppe Penone, “Spazio di Luce (Space of Light)” (September 4, 2012 – August 11, 2013), at Whitechapel Gallery.

Penone, a member of the Italian art movement “Arte Povera“, has examined our relationship to nature over the past 45 years. For the latest Bloomberg Commission, he has created a 12-metre bronze cast of a tree with a gleaming gold-leaf interior. This work is a recollection of his work in 1969, “All the Years of the tree plus one“, a tree covered by a thin layer of wax, but this time he has created with bronze instead of a real tree. He found a tree in a mountain, and cut it in pieces in good size for making a cast. He also removed some branches so that the tree can stand by itself, like an animal. He first put a layer of wax with the brush and then by hands over the first layer, so you can see many fingerprints of whom involved in the sculpture’s making like a memory. Void spaces inside of the bronze cast are painted in gold, historically associated with the life-giving forces of light of the sun, and you can see through the entire tree from the entrance of the gallery.

If you have no knowledge about this work, you may mistakenly believe that this is a real tree. You can even feel life force that trees possess. One cheerful visitor was singing into the tree and enjoying the echo of his singing. A truly dynamic work that gives us a life force, and makes us all liven up. Two thumbs up!

Heart in Nature for Valentine’s Day: Telegraph

一日早いけれど（日本はもう当日か）、バレンタインデーにちなんだ、テレグラフ紙のフォトギャラリー「Heart in Nature」。島や氷山、岩、湖、植物、動物、昆虫、果ては宇宙の星雲など、自然界に偶然にできた「♡（ハート形）」を写した、これら30枚の写真を見ていると、少し幸せな気分になる。

One day before Valentine’s Day, here is Telegraph’s photo gallery “Heart in Nature“, a collection of 30 images of accidentally formed ♡ (heart-shape), found in great nature. Islands, lake, iceberg, rocks, plants, animals, insect, and even a nebula in space. Amazing.

Newspeak: British Art Now @ The Saatchi Gallery

Duke of York Squareに行った時に、隣接するDuke of York’s HQにあるSaatchi Gallery（サーチ・ギャラリー）で、「Newspeak: British Art Now Part II」展（〜4月30日）を観た。このギャラリーは、広告代理店「サーチ・アンド・サーチ」（Saatchi & Saatchi）の共同創業者で、アート・コレクターのチャールズ・サーチ氏が、自らのコンテンポラリー・アート・コレクションを公開するために、1985年に北ロンドンのSt John’s Wood（セント・ジョンズ・ウッド）に設立したもの。その後、2003年にサウスバンクの旧ロンドン市庁舎（カウンティ・ホール）に移転、そして2008年にはDuke of York’s HQに再移転。そのオープニングには、「The Revolution Continues: New Chinese Art（革命は続く：新しい中国アート）」と題した中国の現代アーティスト展を開催し、話題を呼んだ。サーチ・ギャラリーはその25年間の歴史の中で、ダミアン・ハーストやトレイシー・エミンを代表とするYBA（ヤング・ブリティッシュ・アーティスト）をはじめ、無名の新進アーティストを発掘・作品の発表の場を提供、数々の論議を巻き起こしながらも、イギリスのアート界に大きな影響を与え続けてきた。昨年7月、サーチ氏は200以上のコレクションとギャラリーを政府に寄贈することを発表、「Museum of Contemporary Art for London」となるのだそう（BBCニュース）。なんて太っ腹な。

オープンから約1年半経つのというのに、この新しいギャラリーに来たのは、実は今回が初めて。今回観た、イギリスの現代アートを紹介する「Newspeak: British Art Now Part II」は、強烈な印象を持つ作品や心に残る作品が見当たらない、少し小粒な展覧会だったけれど、4フロア計13室の新しいギャラリーは以前の少し薄暗い建物に比べ、明るく広々としていて、気持ちがいい。入場料も無料なので、気軽に足を運べるのも嬉しい。ただ、ギャラリー前の公園は立ち入り禁止なのが残念。アート鑑賞後、リラックスするのに最適の場所なのに。

When we went to Duke of York Square, we also saw  “Newspeak: British Art Now Part II” exhibition (– April 30) at the Saatchi Gallery at nearby Duke of York’s HQ. Charles Saatchi, an art collector and the co-founder of global advertising agency Saatchi & Saatchi, opened the gallery in 1985 in order to exhibit his contemporary art collection to the public in St John’s Wood, North London. The gallery moved to County Hall on the Southbank in 2003, then to Duke of York’s HQ in 2008 with inaugural exhibition of “the Revolution Continues: New Chinese Art,” showcasing emerging contemporary Chinese art. The gallery has discovered many unknown artists including Damien Hirst and Tracey Emin as well as other YBAs and brought them to stardom, but also often caused media controversy, but it has been giving a big impact on British art throughout 25 years of its history. Last year, it was announced that more than 200 works and the gallery would be given to the British public, becoming the Museum of Contemporary Art for London (BBC news) – how generous of Mr. Saatchi!

It was the first time for us to visit the gallery in this new location, though it reopened a year and half ago. “The Newspeak: British Art Now Part II“, exhibiting emergent British contemporary art, didn’t offer us much without any strong impression nor eye-opening experience, but new gallery space with total of 13 rooms on four floors is bright and airy, and pleasant place to enjoy art, with a big incentive of free admission. It is a shame that we couldn’t relax in the park in front, which was off limit, after stroll around this large gallery.

Ximena Garrido-Leccaの作品「The Followers」。花や写真、さまざまなオブジェで飾られた、母国のペルーの「nichos（ニチョス）」と呼ばれる壁墓（イタリアもそうだけれど、近年は場所の節約のため、壁にお墓が埋め込まれている）を再現した、キッチュな作品。

“The Followers” by Ximena Garrido-Lecca is a reproduction of a burial wall “nichos” from her native Peru, where it is customary to adorn graves with flowers, photographs and objects. Very kitsch.

私のお気に入りの作品、イギリス人アーティスト・Richard Wilsonの「20:50」。サーチ・ギャラリーで唯一のパーマネント・インスタレーションで、1991年からずっと展示されている。展示室13の床は、タイトルである「20:50」と呼ばれる、厚くて真っ黒なリサイクルされたエンジンオイルで覆われ、部屋の構造を映し出す。最初は床が黒い鏡でできているのかと思った。

My favorite work in the gallery, “20:50“, created by British artist Richard Wilson. This is the only permanent installation at the Saatchi Gallery and has been continuously shown in each of the gallery’s venues since 1991. The room 13 is entirely flooded in thick and pitch black oil, which the title “20:50” takes its name from the type of recycled engine oil used – it reflects the architecture of the room. Thought the floor was made of black mirror – great idea.

どうやら、オーナーであるサーチ氏を偶然撮影してしまったらしい。カメラを構えている時は気づかなかったけれど、後からMに「あれは絶対彼だよ」と言われた。サーチ氏に似ているけれど、本当かな？

It seems that I happened to take a photo of Mr. Saatchi. I didn’t notice when I held my camera up, but M told me he believed it was him. Isn’t it him for real?!
