Tea & Cake London

紅茶、アフタヌーン・ティーと言えばイギリス。昨年11月に発行されたカフェ＆ケーキガイド「Tea & Cake London」は、ロンドンで美味しい紅茶、ケーキを楽しめるカフェやティールーム、ベーカリーなど、伝統あるお店から最近人気のモダンでスタイリッシュなお店まで、70店以上を紹介。「Everyday Specials: Cafes & Tearooms（日常で使えるカフェ＆ティールーム）」「Grand Affairs: Afternoon Tea（伝統的アフタヌーンティーを体験できる店）」「Pop In, Take Out: Bakeries & Patisseries（テイクアウトや手早くお茶できるベーカリーやケーキ屋さん）」「Tea with a Twist: Alternative & Themed（外国風カフェや、ユニークなコンセプト、テーマを持ったお店）」「Virtuous Vices: Vegan & Allergy-Friendly（ベジタリアンやアレルギーがある人でも楽しめるお店）」の5章に分かれていて、それぞれの目的にあった場所を見つけることが出来る。

縦横16.5 x 14.5 cmの小さな本だけれど、192ページに渡り新旧の人気店を数多く取り上げていて（今までブログで書いたお店も多数）、オールカラーの写真も綺麗。ただケーキと言っても、フランスや日本のような、見た目も綺麗で繊細なケーキがいただけるところは残念ながらあまり多くなく、カップケーキとかブラウニー程度がご自慢の「ケーキ」だったりするカフェも多いけれど、ロンドンだから仕方ない。また、マップ検索しないとカフェの場所が分からないのが難点、ページナンバー入りのエリア別地図があれば尚良し。

So you can find the perfect place based on what you want, from everyday retreats and takeaway goodies to afternoon teas for special occasions and exotic cafés for fun.

This cute book with a dimension of 16.5 x 14.5 cm and 192 pages, picks up many old & new popular places in London (I have written many of those in my blog), and all-coloured photos are pretty. Although not all the ‘cakes’ in the book are the beautifully decorated ones you see at French pâtisseries but just brownies or cupcakes, but this is London, not in Paris. Another problem is that there is no map and I have to map search to know the location of the café I would like to try – it would be better if the book has detailed area maps with page numbers.

Breakfast & Brunch Secrets London Guide

Deck of Secretsが11月に発行した、ロンドンの朝食＆ブランチガイド「Breakfast & Brunch Secrets London」。タバコぐらいの大きさの箱に、ロンドンの高級店からカジュアルなカフェまで、現地ライターが厳選した新旧52店を紹介したカード（表はお店の写真と情報、裏は地図が印刷）が入っている。ちなみに、ジョーカーを除くトランプのカードの数も52、そして1年を週換算した数も52（＋1日）。週1回1店行くと、1年で全店制覇出来る計算になる。

2003年にオーストラリアのメルボルンで生まれたDeck of Secretsは、現在、ダイニングやブランチ、バー、ショッピング、スパなどのテーマ別に、メルボルン、シドニーなどオーストラリアのみならず、ニューヨーク、ロンドン、エジンバラ、香港、ダブリン、バルセロナ、モントリオールやバンクーバーなど世界の人気都市のガイドを25冊以上発行している。

このガイドと出会ったきっかけは、出版社から、エンジェルのオーストリアン・カフェ・Kipferlの写真を使わせて欲しいという連絡があったこと。出来上がった、この可愛いガイドを送って下さった。自分の写真が使われているから宣伝している訳ではなく（ブログに書いてくださいという依頼もありません）、Albion、Caravan、Lantana、Leila’s Shop、Look Mum No Hands!、J+A Cafe、St Ali、Milk Bar、St John Hotel、Dishoom、Hackney Pearlと、今まで私がブログで取り上げたところも多く、親近感を感じたから。それに、マーサ・スチュワート・リビング風のパステルカラーのパッケージもレイアウトもキュートだし、値段も£4.99とお手頃。またカード型なら、ガイドを持ち歩かなくても、お財布にお目当ての店のカードを一枚しのばせるだけでOK。iPhoneとWindows 7のアプリ版もあり。

“Breakfast & Brunch Secrets London” guide is published in November 2011 by Deck of Secrets. 52 places carefully chosen by local writers across London, from high end to casual, new and old, are included in this cigarette size box containing card-style guides – one place per card, a photo and information printed on the front and map on the back. ’52’ is the same  number of cards contained in a playing card deck, as well as a number of weeks in one year – so you can cover all places in one year if you go one place every week. Clever!

Launched in 2003 in Melbourne, Australia, Deck of Secrets now publishes over 25 titles in different categories like dining, brunch, bar, shopping, spa etc, covering not only Australia such as Sydney and Melbourne, but also popular cities worldwide including New York, Vancouver, Montreal, London, Edinburgh, Dublin Barcelona and Hong Kong.

I got to know this guide because the publisher contacted me to use one of my photo of Kipferl, an Austrian café in Angel. She kindly sent me this cute guide after going on sale. I am writing about this guide, not because my photo is used or I was asked to publicise it (which they never did), but the guide includes many places I mentioned in my blog, such as Albion, Caravan, Lantana, Leila’s Shop, Look Mum No Hands!, J+A Cafe, St Ali, Milk Bar, St John Hotel, Dishoom, and Hackney Pearl – this make me feel very close to the guide. Also its Martha Stewart-like package design and layout with pastel colours is nice, and the price of £4.99 (€7.95/$9.95 in AUS/US/Canada) is quite reasonable. You don’t need to bring an entire guide but only one card in your choice in your wallet – how handy, isn’t it? iPhone and Windows 7 Apps are also available.

Mr & Mrs Smith New Italy Hotel Collection

Mr & Mrs Smithの新しいホテルガイド、 「Mr & Mrs Smith Hotel Collection: Italy」が、先月21日に出版された。Mr & Mrs Smithの他のガイドと同じく、スタイリッシュなデザイン、美しい写真にセンスのいい色使いと、素敵な本に仕上がっている。掲載されているホテルも、プチホテルから中規模デザインホテル（大規模高層ホテルチェーンはない）、シティホテルからリゾート、そして値段もリーズナブルなところから長期滞在は考えられない高級ホテルまで、Mr & Mrs Smithならではのテイストの良いホテルが集められている。

強いて欠点をいえば、ライトグレーやスモーキーイエローなど、薄い色の背景に白地の文字がとても読みにくいこと。旅行雑誌の記事のように、ライターの個人的体験を綴ったホテルレビューが、ちょっと長くて鬱陶しいこと。ルネッサンス・アートのYES/NOチャートが意味不明なこと。パスタのイラストがパスタに見えないこと（写真の方が分かりやすいと思う）、か。

Mr & Mrs Smith‘s new hotel guide,” Mr & Mrs Smith Hotel Collection: Italy” is published last month. Like other Mr & Mrs Smith‘s gudes, the book is stylishly made: cool design, nice photos, and sophisticated colours. Hotels selected for the book are sleek and chic, typical of Mr & Mrs Smith, and in good variety: from petit B&B to moderate size boutique hotels (but neither skyscrapers nor international mega chains on the book); affordable to upscale that makes me hesitate to stay long; city hotels as well as country retreats.

If I have to list up shortcomings of the guide, it would be: hard-to-read white types on light colours like light gray and smokey yellow; hotel reviews based on writer’s personal experiences, like in articles on travel magazines, are a bit long and irritating (a list of facts is well enough on a guide); make-no-sense YES/NO chart for “HOW TO…identify Renaissance art”; and illustrations of pasta which don’t look like pasta – photos maybe easier to understand this case.

Good Beach Guide 2011 – are UK beaches Clean or Dirty?

イギリスの海水浴場の水質調査を基に、水のきれいなビーチをリストアップしたガイド「Good Beach Guide」2011年版が、今日公開された。Marine Conservation Society（MCS/海洋保全団体）が1987年より発行しているこのガイドは、1960年に作られた海水浴場の「Golden List」に起源を持つ。下水で汚染された海で泳いだ後に、6歳の娘をポリオで亡くしたWakefield（ウェイクフィールド）夫妻は、未処理の下水が海洋投棄されていることに憤りを感じ、このリストを作成した。これが、他の海洋汚染防止キャンペーンとともに、1976年における海水浴場の水質のヨーロッパ基準策定と、下水処理への膨大な投資につながったという。

MCSは、欧州連合のBathing Water Directive（水浴場の水質指導規定）を基に、イギリス国内の782カ所の水質を調査。今年の調査結果によると、昨年に比べて42カ所多い、461カ所が最高レベルの「recommended（推薦）」を取得。24年の発行期間の間で3番目に高い数値となったが、それでも46カ所は最低レベルの「basic pass」さえクリアすることが出来なかった。

35年前に制定されたヨーロッパ法の水質基準の見直しにより、2015年度からより厳格になる予定で、2012年からその監視が始まる。その結果、将来2倍近くのビーチが基準をクリアできなくなる恐れがあるとMCSは危惧する。下水の海洋投棄は未だに合法で、監視が充分に出来ておらず、未処理の下水を放水している回数がチェックできているのは、たった4分の1だけだそう。

汚染された海で泳ぐと、お腹の具合が悪くなったり、目や耳、喉の感染症を引き起こす可能性があるそう。それに未処理の下水が混ざった海で泳ぐなんて、考えただけで気持ち悪い！環境問題にうるさい（と思っていた）イギリスが、まだ海洋投入前の下水処理を義務づけていないなんて、少し驚きだ。イギリスでビーチ・バカンスをお考えの方、「Good Beach Guide 2011 Recommended Beaches」（推奨ビーチリスト）を見てから、行き先決定を。

A comprehensive guide to bathing water quality around the UK, Good Beach Guide 2011 launched today. Published by the Marine Conservation Society(MCS) since 1987, the Guide began life as a ‘Golden List’ of beaches in 1960. Tony and Daphne Wakefield had lost their six-year-old daughter, after she contracted polio swimming at a sewage contaminated beach. Outraged that raw sewage was being pumped into the sea, the Wakefields published a new ‘Golden List’ of clean bathing beaches. This, along with other clean sea campaigns, led to the introduction of European standards for bathing water quality in 1976, and massive investment by the water industry to clean up raw sewage (quoted fromGood Beach Guide).

The MCS tests water quality at 782 sites across the UK, under the EU’s Bathing Water Directive rules. This year’s results suggest that the number of beaches given the top rating was the third highest in its 24-year history: 461 beaches gained its top “recommended” award, 42 more than last year, although 46 sites failed to reach the mandatory minimum level of “basic pass”.

The basic standards of water quality were set in European law 35 year ago, but stricter rules will come into force from 2015 due to the revision of the Bathing Water Directive, and these will start to be monitored from 2012. As a result, the MCS concerns that almost double the number of beaches could fail in future years. It is still legal to pump sewage into the sea and not enough of those outlets were being monitored. Only a quarter are monitored to check how often they are putting untreated sewage into the sea.

Water pollution can give swimmers stomach upsets or ear, nose and throat infections. Also it is disgusting to swim in the sea mixed with water from sewage (I didn’t know it is still legal)!! Lonely Planet New Great Britain Travel Guide

今月発売された、旅行ガイドのLonely Planet（ロンリープラネット）が発行するGreat Britain Guide（イギリスガイド）の最新版が、イギリスでちょっとした波紋を呼んでいる。ロンリープラネットは、広告も取らず、どこの観光協会ともタイアップしない方針を貫く独立系のガイドブック。英語の旅行ガイドで世界一のシェアを誇る。自費で旅して情報を集めるため、見聞きしたことを率直に書けるのが強み。それで今回のイギリスガイドがかなり辛口だったため、メディアが飛びついたのだ。

一言で言うと、イギリスの観光地としての評価は「Over-crowded, over-rated and over-priced（混雑し過ぎ、評価過剰、物価高過ぎ）」 。ポンド安で海外から観光客はたくさん来るけれど、イギリス旅行は決して安くない。交通、入場料、レストラン、ホテルは、他の多くのヨーロッパ諸国に比べて割高。多くの観光アトラクションはつまらなくて、観光地としての質が低いと批判的。

でも何となく同感。イギリスの田舎のなだらかな丘陵地帯が広がる光景なんかはとても美しいしと思うんだけれども、休暇となると国内じゃなく他のヨーロッパの国々に出かけてしまうのも、このことも理由の一つだ。それにイギリスの小さな街って、南欧とかに比べると、日が暮れとともにお店が閉まると人気もなくなって、何とも侘しさを感じる。またロンドン以外の都市は、チェーン系の店やレストランが幅を利かせ、どこに行っても同じに見えてしまう。

ロンドンに関しては、素晴らしいレストランや無料のアトラクションも多く、世界で最もクールで素晴らしい都市の一つと高評価だけれど（他の都市に関してはテレグラフ記事参照）、一方で、レストランは質の割に値段が高過ぎ。最悪の場合、缶入り食品の味がする「モダン・ヨーロピアン料理」に£30も払うはめになるとも。イギリスは、食べ物に定評がある国じゃないけれど、著者の一人は「スライス済みの白パンとくたくたになるまで茹でられた野菜を、砂糖4杯を入れた紅茶で流し込む」食文化はまだ各地に健在だと、手厳しい。言いたい放題だが、それでもイギリス人の自尊心を完全には傷つけないよう、「イギリスは今もGreatで、世界でも最も魅力的な国の一つ」だと賞賛も忘れないところが、商売上手。来年のオリンピックを前に、汚名挽回なるか？

The Lonely Planet‘s latest Great Britain Guide has been released recently. Lonely Planet is the the largest travel guide book, and totally independent without taking advertising or linking any local tourisms. They pay their own trip so the guide can be quite honest and candid for what they write about the destination. The latest guide about UK is quite critical and therefore has caught media attention.

“Over-crowded, over-rated and over-priced” – this is the guide’s verdict in short. The recent trend of weak pound attracts foreign tourists, but traveling Britain isn’t cheap – public transport, admission fees, restaurants and hotel rooms all tend to be expensive compared with their equivalents in many other European countries. The country’s many tourist attractions are said as “boring and lacking in quality”…

But I have to agree some points. I love beautiful countryside of Britain with rolling hills, but we tend to travel other European countries because the same reasons that Lonely Planet pointed out. Besides the high cost of traveling in UK, British small villages look ghost town and very sad after the sunset when all the stores close and people go home, in compare to Southern European countries. On the other hand, cities all look alike with the high streets lined with national chain stores and restaurants, and are not very distinctive.

London got good review as one of the world’s great cities, if not the greatest, with endless reserves of cool (see telegraph article for other cities and towns). The guide said the city had excellent restaurants with many free attractions for children, but also found that despite its good restaurants, London also offered overpriced food. Tourists may end up “forking out £30 in a restaurant for a ‘modern European’ concoction that tastes like it came from a can”. Yes, UK is not known as a foodies’ paradise, but co-ordinating author of the Lonely Planet Guide to England concluds that “a culinary heritage of ready-sliced white bread, fatty meats and boiled-to-death vegetables, all washed down by tea with four sugars, remains firmly in place in many parts of the country.’ Sounds quite bad, but Lonely Planet also doesn’t forget to praise that many parts of Great Britain are still ‘great’, and that it is still one of the most fascinating places in the world to explore – without completely knocking down British pride.
