“La Béte” Drawing @ Highbury Fields

昨日から風邪気味でぼーっとしていて、頭が働かない。なので、今日のブログは簡単に。先日見つけた、Highbury & Islington（ハイブリー＆イズリントン）駅の近くにあるHighbury Fields（ハイブリー・フィールズ）沿いの黒壁に描かれた落書き。落書きに書かれたマイ・スペースのアドレスを見てみると、どうやらLa Béteというバンドのメンバー（かそのファン）が描いたらしい。何となく気に入って、撮った写真。

ちなみに、La Béteは日本語でばかとか野獣とか虫とか言う意味らしい（参考サイト）。ちなみに、「美女と野獣」はフランス語で「La Belle et la Bête」と言う。

I have been spaced out from yesterday with cold and my brain doesn’t work properly – so I will write short today. This is a drawing that I found the other day near the Highbury Fields, across the Highbury & Islington tube station. I assume that it was drawn by a member (or a fan) of a music band La Béte, from a myspace address written next to the drawing.  I kind of like it and took a photo.

By the way, La Béte means ‘animal’ or ‘beast’ in French. The French title for “The Beauty and the Beast” is “La Belle et la Bête“.

New London Overground East London Line Now Open

先日、Pizza Eastにランチしに行った時に、ロンドン・オーバーグラウンド、East London line（イースト・ロンドン・ライン）のShoreditch High Street（ショーディッチ・ハイストリート）駅がオープンしているのに気づいた。Pizza Eastで窓際に座るとショーディッチ・ハイストリート駅横の鉄道橋が見えるのだが、ピザを食べながら誰も乗っていない車両が試運転されているのを見て、いつ開通するんだろうとずっと思っていた。

ロンドン東部とDocklands（ドックランズ）を通って北部と南部を結ぶイースト・ロンドン・ラインは、10億ポンドをかけた延長計画のため、2007年12月に閉鎖。その第1段階が最近終了、今年4月27日に限定運行が始まり、5月23日に完全運行が始まった。第1段階工事では、従来のイースト・ロンドン・ラインに、ショーディッチ・ハイストリート駅、Hoxton（ホクストン）駅、 Haggerston（ハガーストン）駅、そして Dalston Junction（ダルストン・ジャンクション）駅を新設、Whitechapel（ホワイトチャペル）駅からDalston Kingsland（ダルストン・キングスランド）駅の間がつながり、ロンドン東部から南部のNew Cross（ニュークロス）駅、Crystal Palace（クリスタル・パレス）駅とWest Croydon（ウェスト・クロイドン）駅まで1本で行けるようになった（以下の路線図を参照）。Highbury & Islington（ハイブリー＆イズリントン）駅までの延長は2011年に、計画第2段階のSurrey Quays（サリー・クウェイズ）駅から、inner South London Line（インナー・サウス・ロンドン・ライン）のClapham Junction（クラッパム・ジャンクション）駅を結ぶラインは、2012年のロンドン・オリンピック前に完成予定。このイースト・ロンドン・ラインの開通で、ドックランズに通勤するビジネスマンの需要が増え、かつては寂れていた地域だった沿線は不動産ブームに沸いているそうだ。

うちから最寄りのホクストン駅まで歩いて20分、近くもなく遠くもない微妙な距離。使えそうで使えなさそう。

When we went to Pizza East the other day, I realized that the new Shoreditch High Street station finally opened. You can see the railway bridge (photo above) when you get a window side seat at Pizza East, and I had been wondering when the London Overground East London line would open, every time I saw a new train on test-run while I was eating a pizza.

The East London line is a London Overground line which runs north to south through the East End and Docklands. The line closed as part of the £1 billion East London line extension in December 2007, but a limited service was introduced on April 27 this year and full service commenced on May 23. In its phase 1, the former underground line was extended northwards from Whitechapel, with new stations at Shoreditch High Street, Hoxton, Haggerston and Dalston Junction. Now you can travel direct from East End to the South, towards New Cross, Crystal Palace, and West Croydon (see a route map below). A further extension to Highbury & Islington is expected to be completed in 2011. Phase 2 which will link the line from Surrey Quays to the inner South London Line at Clapham Junction, is due to be completed prior to the 2012 Summer Olympics. It is reported that the opening of the East London line has brought property boom to the area once isolated areas of southeast London.

The closest station from us to the line is the Hoxton station, but it takes about 20-min walk – not close but not too far. Unfortunately I don’t get much benefit from it.

Highbury Fields @ Islington

雨が多かったイースターの休日（今年は4月2日〜5日）が終わり、今日は、暖かくてお天気のいい、とても春らしい日だったので、久しぶりに、Le Péché Mignonでランチした。このカフェの中庭のテーブルがお気に入りで、天気のいい日の定番のランチ場所になのだけれど、冬の間は寒いので、もう何ヶ月も来ていなかった。そして、Le Péché Mignonに来た時は、いつもこのHighbury Fields（ハイブリー・フィールズ）を散歩してから帰る。

Rainy Easter holidays (April 2 to 5 this year) was over, and it is a warm and sunny spring day today – finally. So we had lunch at Le Péché Mignon, our regular lunch place for sunny days at their cozy courtyard, after long cold winter months. Every time we go to Le Péché Mignon, we take a walk in Highbury Fields after lunch.

ハイブリー・フィールズは、Highbury & Islington（ハイブリー&イズリントン）駅の北にある、ビクトリア朝やジョージアン様式のタウンハウスに囲まれた閑静な公園で、イズリントン区最大のオープンスペース。テニスコートやサッカー場、子供の遊び場、そしてHighbury Pool and Fitness Centreという、公営のスポーツセンターを備える。

Surrounded by elegant Georgian and Victorian town houses, Highbury Fields is located north of the  Highbury & Islington station and is the largest open space in the borough of Islington, with tennis courts, football pitch and a children’s play area as well as recently refurbished Highbury Pool and Fitness Centre.

近くにある、アーセナルのホーム・Arsenal Stadiumで試合がある日は、試合が終わった後は、赤白のアーセナルのチームカラーに身を包んだファンが、公園を通ってぞろぞろ帰ってきて、「ウォーリーをさがせ！」状態になる。

When Arsenal F.C. has a home game at Arsenal Stadium nearby, Highbury Fields looks like a page of “Where’s Wally?” after the game, with tons of fans coming back through the park in Arsenal’s team color red x white shirts and bar scarves.

公園の横にある、アイスクリーム屋さん。天気の良い日は、長い行列ができる。こちらでよく見かけるこのような移動式アイスクリーム屋さん、ソフトクリームにチョコレートスティックをのせたものや、市販のアイスクリーム・バーを売っている。何故かイタリアの国旗を掲げたりイタリア風の名前をつけているけれど、イタリアのジェラートとは似ても似つかない。

An ice cream van on the side of the park. There is always a long line/queue in sunny afternoons. This kind of ice cream vans are quite popular in UK, and sells soft ice cream with chocolate stick on the top and manufactured ice cream bars. Though they colored their vans in red, white and green like Italian national flag, and put Italian names, but their ice creams are not Italian at all – just in case you expect Italian gelato from them.

公園の南側にある、戦死傷したイズリントン住民を記念し、1906年に建てられた、アールヌーボー風のボーア戦争碑。

An art nouveau style war memorial dating from 1906 at the south end of the fields, that commemorates Islington residents who fell in the Boer War.

Le Péché Mignon @ Holloway Road, Islington

Tube（ロンドン地下鉄の愛称）の、Highbury & Islington駅とHolloway Road駅の中間ぐらい、Holloway Roadから少し入ったところにある、小さなフレンチ・カフェ／デリ、Le Péché Mignon（ル・ペシェ・ミニヨン：日本語で「良い罪」）。上品な家々に囲まれた閑静なHighbury Fields公園が近くにあるが、Arsenal Stadium（サッカーチーム・アーセナルの本拠地）も程近く、メインストリートのHolloway Roadは、スターバックスもない、ちょっと粗野な感じの大通り。そんななか、おいしい軽食とコーヒーを提供するLe Péché Mignonは、地域住民の憩いの場となっている。近くに建築系の学校や大学（London Metropolitan University）があり、日本人の若者もよく見かける。冷蔵庫や棚に並べられた食品は厳選されており、木製の可愛いバスケット（写真上）に入れて出される、クロック・ムッシューやバゲット・サンドイッチ、トーストされたサンドイッチ等の軽食の他、さくさくのクロワッサンやデニッシュ、ケーキ等、何を食べてもだいたい美味しい。コーヒーも、エスプレッソに一家言あるMの基準をパスしている。カフェは１つのテーブルを他の人とシェアする形式で、ゆったりしているとは言いがたいが、ル・ペシェ・ミニヨンはそれにも耐える価値がある。もう少し暖かくなって、中庭も解放され、この「渋滞」が少し緩和されるのが待ち遠しい。

Small French cafe/deli, Le Péché Mignon (‘the nice sin’ in English) is situated in between Highbury & Islington and Holloway Road tube (nickname for London Underground) station, just a block away from Holloway Road. The area is close to the Arsenal Stadium and there is a nice park Highbury Fields surrounded by beautiful houses, but the main street, Holloway Road, is chaotic and a bit rough (you don’t even see any Starbacks around). Le Péché Mignon is a kind of oasis for the residents who are desperate for decent food and good coffee. There is also a architecture school and London Metropolitan University near by、 and you see many students as well. They have Croque Monsieur, baguette sandwich, toasted sandwiches, croissant, and cakes etc., served in a cute petite basket (photo above), and normally you don’t get disappointed with any of them, as well as selected foods in the fridge and on the shelves. Their coffee also passed the espresso junkie M’s test and is very good. The cafe area has only one communal table and you share with other people, which is not spacious and sometimes is crowded. I can’t wait this congestion will be eased, when it gets warmer and their courtyard will be available for customers!
