Curious Yellow Kafé re-located to Pitfield Street

以前書いた、Holloway Road（ホロウェイ・ロード）にあるスウェーデン風カフェ・Curious Yellow Kaféが、最近ホクストンのPitfield Street（ピットフィールド・ストリート）に引っ越してきた（Pitfieldカフェよりさらに北）。カウンター席が数席あるだけの小さな店からスペースは倍（以上）増。オーナーの趣味？の凧があちこちに飾られた店内には、４人がけテーブルが５つあるけれど、暖かい日は外の席が人気。交通量の多いホロウェイ・ロードとは違い、静かなピットフィールド・ストリートに面しているので、車の排気ガスを気にする必要もない。ホロウェイ・ロードの時と同じく、メニューにはオーナー手作りのスウェーデン料理が並ぶ。ラム肉のムサカは残念ながらハズレだったけれど、スウェーデン風ミートボールのスパゲティはなかなか美味（写真下）。

Cute Swedish café Curious Yellow Kafé on Holloway Road recently moved to Pitfield Street in Hoxton (further up north from the Pitfield café). The space became more than double from just several counter seatings and now there are five 4-seat tables inside, decorated with funky kites (owner’s hobby?)> But alfresco tables outside are more popular on a warm day – the new location faces to the quieter Pitfield street and you don’t have to worry about car emissions like busy Holloway Road. As before, you can enjoy owner’s homemade Swedish cooking at the new ‘Kafé’ as well. We were not impressed by their lamb moussaka but Swedish meatball spaghetti was yummy :-)

Curious Yellow Kafé @ Holloway Road

アーセナル・スタジアムの近く、カフェ不毛の地のHolloway Road（ホロウェイ・ロード）に、新しいカフェ「Curious Yellow Kafé」がオープンした。ストックホルム出身のオーナーが開いたこのカフェは、カウンター席が数席（8席ぐらい？）と外にベンチが一つあるだけの、私の知っているロンドンのカフェで一、二を争う小ささ。でも、白壁と木の家具でまとめられた、シンプルですっきりとした北欧スタイルの明るい店内は、意外に狭さを感じさせない。カウンターに置かれた、IKEAのGODIS MIXシリーズのカラフルなグラス（私たちも実は持っている）も、いいアクセントになっている。

シーズンによって変わる、スウェーデン風メニューは、基本手作り。パンは、ゴードン・ラムゼイのレストランにも卸しているBoulangerie de Franceから仕入れている。コーヒーや紅茶にもこだわりがあり、カウンターの横にあるクラシックな木の棚には、ガラス瓶に入った様々な紅茶、ハーブティーやフルーツティーの茶葉が並ぶ。

場所は、以前に書いた、Le Péché Mignonと目の鼻の先。どちらも小さなカフェ、どちらかが満席であれば、すぐにもう一軒に行けるのが嬉しい。もし席が空いていれば、の話だけれど。

Recently a new café “Curious Yellow Kafé” opened in an odd and rough area on Holloway Road, near the Arsenal Stadium (you know how it is around soccer stadium). This Swedish-owned place is one of the smallest cafés I know in London, with few counter seats (around 8 seats?) and one bench outside. But I didn’t feel claustrophobic in its Scandinavian simple & clean interior with white walls and wooden furniture. IKEA’s colorful GODIS MIX series glasses (we also have them) add an Swedish touch to this cosy café.

Its seasonal Swedish influenced menu is basically all hand-made. Their breads come from Boulangerie de France, whose clientele list includes Gordon Ramsay. Their passion also extends to coffee and tea as well. A selection of loose teas, herb and fruits teas in glass containers are nicely placed on the classic wooden shelf, next to the counter.

The café is located only a stone’s throw from Le Péché Mignon, a French café I wrote before. Both are tiny, so if one is full, you can go to the other very easily – only if it has an empty seat, though!

Sacred Cafe Highbury Studios @ Holloway Road

たまった不要電化製品を捨てに、HollowayにあるIslington Household Reuse and Recycling Centreに行った帰り、新しいカフェを発見した。リサイクル・センター横の土地を再開発して建てられたアパート・商業複合施設、Highbury Studiosの一角にあるSacred Cafeは、以前に書いたNude Espresso Cafeと同じく、ニュージーランド人の経営で、ロンドンに５軒の店を持つ。ニュージーランド風焙煎のオーガニック／フェアトレードコーヒーや、オーナーの家族がスリランカで栽培している紅茶類、フレッシュなKiwi（キーウィ、ニュージーランドの愛称）フードが楽しめる。広々としたラウンジ形式になっているメゾネットスタイルの2階は、照明を暗くして、ダークウッドと同色のソファーやテーブルでまとめられ、仏像や木製のカゴでオリエンタル調に装飾されている。居心地が良く、ついつい長居してしまうカフェだ。

We found a new cafe on the way back from Islington Household Reuse and Recycling Centre to recycle electronics. Located on the corner of Highbury Studios, part of the regeneration programme for North London next to the recycling center, Sacred Cafe is owned by 2 New Zealanders, like Nude Espresso Cafe I wrote before. 5 cafes in London serve New Zealand organic fair-trade coffee roast and teas grown by the co-owner’s family in Sri Lanka, and fresh Kiwi food menus. Lounge-style mezzanine floor is decorated in oriental style, such as Buddha statue and wooden lanterns. This dimly-lighted spacious seating area with dark wood floor and same-colored tables and couches was so relaxing and comfy, that we could stay all day.

Le Péché Mignon @ Holloway Road, Islington

Tube（ロンドン地下鉄の愛称）の、Highbury & Islington駅とHolloway Road駅の中間ぐらい、Holloway Roadから少し入ったところにある、小さなフレンチ・カフェ／デリ、Le Péché Mignon（ル・ペシェ・ミニヨン：日本語で「良い罪」）。上品な家々に囲まれた閑静なHighbury Fields公園が近くにあるが、Arsenal Stadium（サッカーチーム・アーセナルの本拠地）も程近く、メインストリートのHolloway Roadは、スターバックスもない、ちょっと粗野な感じの大通り。そんななか、おいしい軽食とコーヒーを提供するLe Péché Mignonは、地域住民の憩いの場となっている。近くに建築系の学校や大学（London Metropolitan University）があり、日本人の若者もよく見かける。冷蔵庫や棚に並べられた食品は厳選されており、木製の可愛いバスケット（写真上）に入れて出される、クロック・ムッシューやバゲット・サンドイッチ、トーストされたサンドイッチ等の軽食の他、さくさくのクロワッサンやデニッシュ、ケーキ等、何を食べてもだいたい美味しい。コーヒーも、エスプレッソに一家言あるMの基準をパスしている。カフェは１つのテーブルを他の人とシェアする形式で、ゆったりしているとは言いがたいが、ル・ペシェ・ミニヨンはそれにも耐える価値がある。もう少し暖かくなって、中庭も解放され、この「渋滞」が少し緩和されるのが待ち遠しい。

Small French cafe/deli, Le Péché Mignon (‘the nice sin’ in English) is situated in between Highbury & Islington and Holloway Road tube (nickname for London Underground) station, just a block away from Holloway Road. The area is close to the Arsenal Stadium and there is a nice park Highbury Fields surrounded by beautiful houses, but the main street, Holloway Road, is chaotic and a bit rough (you don’t even see any Starbacks around). Le Péché Mignon is a kind of oasis for the residents who are desperate for decent food and good coffee. There is also a architecture school and London Metropolitan University near by、 and you see many students as well. They have Croque Monsieur, baguette sandwich, toasted sandwiches, croissant, and cakes etc., served in a cute petite basket (photo above), and normally you don’t get disappointed with any of them, as well as selected foods in the fridge and on the shelves. Their coffee also passed the espresso junkie M’s test and is very good. The cafe area has only one communal table and you share with other people, which is not spacious and sometimes is crowded. I can’t wait this congestion will be eased, when it gets warmer and their courtyard will be available for customers!
