Town Hall Hotel @ Patriot Square, Bethnal Green

This Bright Fieldから南へ数分歩くと、エドワード様式の立派な建物が見えてくる。これは2010年にオープンしたTown Hall Hotelで、シンガポール人ホテル実業家のLoh Lik Pengが、以前は区役所として使われていた、1909年建造のこの建物を改装。大理石の床や柱、立派な階段を備えた吹き抜けのロビーの片隅には、ミッド・センチュリー風の椅子が並ぶなど、アールデコ装飾とモダンなインテリアを融合した、優雅なデザインホテルに生まれ変わった。また、ホテル内のパブリック・スペースには、繊細な木版画や鉛筆描きの壁画、ペルシャ絨毯から作られたmoose（アメリカヘラジカ）の頭など、イースト・ロンドンのアーティストの作品が飾られている。

ロンドンに住んでいる人には宿泊する機会がないかもしれないけれど、ホテルには、ポルトガル人シェフ・Nuno Mendesがプロデュースした、ミシュラン一つ星のViajanteともう少しカジュアルなCorner roomという、二つの人気レストランが入っており、多くのグルメたちが訪れる。

部屋については泊まった事がないので、ご興味ある方は、批評家のレビュー（Telegraph/Guardian）と、デザインホテルサイト・Mr & Mrs Smithをチェックしてみて。でも、ホテルのあるエリアは、お世辞にも柄の良いエリアではなく、世界のおもちゃのコレクションを有するV&A Museum of Childhoodと、以前にブログでも取り上げた、いくつかのカフェやレストランしかないので、ロンドン初心者にはあまりお勧めできないかも。

Walking down several minutes to the south from This Bright Field, you will see Town Hall Hotel, opened sometime in 2010 and housed in a grand Edwardian building in Bethnal Green. Singapore hotelier Loh Lik Peng has transformed this former council hall with Art Deco detailing (history of the building) into this elegant boutique hotel, keeping the old charms but adding modern fixtures. The atrium is classic and impressive, with designed marble floors and marble pillars as well as imposing staircases, and also has some contemporary feel with mid-century style chairs for guests to relax. Inside of the hotel’s public spaces, you can see artworks by East London artists, such as delicate woodcuts, murals in pencil, and a mounted moose head made from Persian carpet.

For people who live in London, including us, may not have a chance to sleep in. However, this hotel houses two popular restaurants which are produced by renowned Portuguese chef Nuno Mendes, michelin-stared Viajante and Corner room, that attract many foodie Londoners.

I can’t write about the rooms as I’ve never slept there, so check the critique’s reviews (Telegraph/Guardian) or Boutique hotel site Mr & Mrs Smith if you want to stay. However, the location is not central or sophisticated at all,there is nothing but V&A Museum of Childhood and some hip neighborhood cafés & restaurants, and I am not sure if I want to recommend this hotel to a foreign guest who comes to London for the first time…

A Day in Cardiff, Wales

オリンピック女子サッカー準々決勝を見に行った際、せっかくの機会なのでカーディフに1泊し、翌日市内観光した。

人口約32万人のカーディフへは、ロンドン・パディントン駅から西へ電車で２時間ちょっと。カーディフは石炭の積み出し港として発展し、1955年にウェールズの首都となった。イギリスを構成する4つの「国（country）」のひとつであるウェールズは、ケルト系の文化・言語と強いアイデンティティを持つ。ウェールズでは、ウェールズ語が英語と並んで公用語とされ、道路標識や公文書は2言語で表記されている。中北部を中心に人口の21.7%（2004年調べ）がウェールズ語を話すことができるらしいが、カーディフ市内ではウェールズ語は文字では見るものの、全く耳にはしなかった。

When we went to see the Olympic women’s football quarter final in Cardiff, we stayed over night and enjoyed sightseeing the day after.

It takes just a little bit more than two hours to go to Cardiff by train from London Paddington station. Cardiff became prosper as a major port for the transport of coal in the early 19th century, and became the capital of Wales in 1955. Wales is one of the four ‘countries’ in UK, and it has retained a distinct cultural identity and is officially bilingual with English and Welsh. The Welsh Language Board indicated in 2004 that 21.7% of the population of Wales were able to speak the language, but I had never heard anybody speaking Welsh in Cardiff, though I saw the signage written in two languages.

Major tourist attractions in Cardiff are Cardiff Castle and Cardiff Bay. Cardiff Castle is situated in the heart of the city centre. The castle is a medieval castle and Victorian architecture Gothic revival mansion, transformed from a Norman keep erected over a Roman fort. The castle substantially altered and extended during the Victorian period by John Crichton-Stuart, 3rd Marquess of Bute, and the architect William Burges.

カーディフ・ベイは石炭の積出港・旧波止波周辺地域を再開発した地区で、セーリングやウォータースポーツが楽しめる淡水湖や、アートセンター、ホテル、レストランなどが集まる新しい観光スポットになっている。中心部から10〜15分おきに出ているバス6番で約10〜15分ほど。

Cardiff Bay is the new tourist destination where old Cardiff docklands have been redeveloped in the last decade, and home to a large freshwater lake for sailing and water sports as well as restaurants and hotels. It is about 10-15 minutes by bus no.6, running every 10-15 minutes, from the city center.

Welsh National Opera（ウェールズ国立オペラ団）の本拠地で、バレエやダンス、ミュージカル、コメディなどが催される、Wales Millennium Centre（ウェールズ・ミレニアム・センター）。愛称「Armadillo（アルマジロ）」。正面には、センターがウェールズ出身の作曲家、カール・ジェンキンスに委託して作られた曲名「Creu Gwir Fel Gwydr O Ffwrnais Awen（ウェールズ語 / 英語では In These Stones Horizons Sing）」くりぬかれている。

Locally nicknamed “the Armadillo”, the Wales Millennium Centre is home to the Welsh National Opera and has hosted performances of opera, ballet, dance, comedy and musicals. On its facade, you can read “Creu Gwir Fel Gwydr O Ffwrnais Awen” in Welsh, or In These Stones Horizons Sing in English, which is the name of a work for chorus and orchestra composed by Welsh composer Karl Jenkins, which was commissioned for the opening of the Wales Millennium Centre.

1992年に再建された歴史的建造物のノルウェー教会は、現在コンサートや展覧会などを行うアートセンターとなっている。

The Norwegian Church Arts Centre, is a rescued historic wooden church that was rebuilt in 1992 and is as a venue for small concerts, art exhibitions, conferences, meetings and celebrations.

宿泊したPark Plaza Hotel Cardiffは、モダンで広々として居心地のいいホテルで、値段もそんなに高くない。目の前はナイトクラブが集まる通りだけれど、部屋はとても静かで、外の騒音は聞こえない。

Park Plaza Hotel Cardiff where we stayed was a modern and chic hotel with a moderate price and has spacious rooms. It is situated in front of the street with full of night clubs and bars, but the room was very quiet and we didn’t hear any noise from outside.

YOtel @ Gatwick Airport

少し前になるが、空港行きの電車の故障で、飛行機に乗り遅れたことがあった。次の便の出発は7時間後。Mはそんなに待つのは嫌だから翌日の便に変更しろとうるさかったけれど、空港内にYOtelがあるのを思い出しMを説得、ここで時間をつぶすことにした。

日本のカプセルホテルをモデルにしたYOtelは、1997年に創業しイギリスの寿司ブームに貢献、現在ロンドンを中心にイギリス、ヨーロッパ、中近東に展開する回転寿司チェーン・Yo! Sushi（ヨー！スシ）の創始者、Simon Woodroffe（サイモン・ウッドロフ）が立ち上げたミニホテルチェーンで、現在、ロンドンのヒースロー空港とガトウィック空港、アムステルダムのスキポール空港、そしてニューヨークのタイムズスクエアの計4軒営業している。

私たちが利用したガトウィック空港内のYOtelは、最低4時間利用でツインルーム料金は£70.34（4時間）。ネットで前払いだと£42.50と割安になる。空港で7時間もぼーっと過ごすことを考えると、この値段でも惜しくない。紫色の照明が怪しげな廊下を通って部屋へ。窓なし、2段ベッドと引き出し式の小さな机、椅子、トイレ＆シャワーがあるだけの、寝台車を思わせる味も素っ気もない狭い部屋だけど、薄型テレビにWiFi完備、コーヒーや紅茶など暖かい飲み物は無料、食事もオーダー可能と、サービス内容はまずまず。歯ブラシ等のアメニティも売っている。部屋はとても清潔で、パリッとした上質のシーツで覆われたベッドはなかなか寝心地も良く、睡眠環境もいい。最初不機嫌だったMもよく眠ったお蔭で機嫌が良くなり、無事同日に出発、ホテルのキャンセルも免れ旅程も予定通りと、ハッピーエンド。良かった：）

A while ago, we missed our flight due to severe delay of a train to an airport. Next flight was 7 hours later. M was furious and insisted to go back home and to take the next day flight. But I wanted to fly on the day as we planned, and then I remembered about YOtel at the airport, and persuaded him to kill the time there.

Inspired by Japanese capsule hotels, YOtel is a mini-hotel chain and was launched by Simon Woodroffe, a founder of the sushi chain  YO! Sushi using the Japanese style ‘kaiten’ conveyor belt in 1997, which has contributed Sushi boom in UK and now have its branches mainly in London but also in other UK cities, Europe, and Middle East. Currently YOtel are in four locations; London Heathrow Airport, Gatwick Airport, Amsterdam Schipol Airport, and Times Square in New York.

YOtel Gatwick where we stayed, it was £70.34 for twin room for 4 hours (minimum stay), but it is much cheaper (£42.50), if you pay in advance online. It was worth it when we imagined of doing nothing but killing 7 hours at the airport. We walked through dim corridor lighten up in purple to our room. It was basic simple room with no window but pull up work desk, small chair, 2 bunks (one upper and one lower), and toilet & shower – it was like a cruise ship cabin. However, service was not bad. The room was equipped with flat screen TV and free WiFi. Hot drinks were free, and you can order food, beverages, snacks and amenities from their “TO GO” menu. The room was clean, and their beds with good quality sheets were quite comfortable to sleep. M was grumpy at first but became in a good mood after sleeping well. We could leave on the same day, without cancellation of a hotel room, and were on an itinerary as we planned – happy ending!

London’s One Room Hotel: “A Room for London” Art Project @ Southbank Centre

Southbank Centre（サウスバンク・センター）の上に乗っかった船。これは、London 2012 Festivalの一環のアートプロジェクト「A Room for London」、テムズ川を見下ろす一部屋だけのホテル。London 2012 Festivalは、北京オリンピック終了後の2008年9月より4年間に渡って行われている文化芸術プログラム「Cultural Olympiad（カルチュラル・オリンピアード）」のハイライトとして、6月21日から9月9日まで、ロンドン・オリンピックの開催中、無料コンサートやアート展など、約1000ものパフォーマンスやイベントが催される他、フェスティバル前にも様々なカウントダウンイベントが行われる予定。

この「A Room for London」は、ジョゼフ・コンラッドの1899年出版の小説「Heart of Darkness（闇の奥）」に出てくる、テムズ川を出発しアフリカのコンゴに至る旅に使われたriverboat（川船）にインスピレーションを得て、David Kohn ArchitectsとアーティストのFiona Bannerが制作した。一晩限り、二人まで宿泊可能で宿泊料は£120〜、公的プロジェクトだからか、メディアも注目する期間限定の特別ホテルなのに、値段はかなり控えめ。あいにく昨年9月9日に始まった1〜6月の予約は開始12分で満室になったけれど、7〜12月の予約は来週19日正午に始まる。メディアでも取り上げられているので応募多数と予測されるけれど、想い出作りに、運試しに申し込んでみるのもいいかも。

A classic boat appeared on the top of Southbank Centre, overlooking the river Thames – this is an arts project “A Room for London” and it is a part of the London 2012 Festival. The London 2012 Festival is a huge cultural celebration, coinciding with the Olympic and Paralympic Games in London, and a culmination of the a four-year programme of cultural events “Cultural Olympiad“, started in 2008 just after Beijing Olympic. From June 21 to September 9, 2012, there will be 1,000 performances and events such as free concerts and art exhibitions, as well as countdown events before the Festival opens.

Inspired by the riverboat captained by Joseph Conrad while in the Congo in 1890, later recreated in his novel Heart of Darkness, David Kohn Architects and artist Fiona Banner created this unique art project. General public can rent out this space for £120〜 for up to two people for one night only. The price is quite reasonable with the premium to stay at the special art project with  limited period and public attention – probably because it is a public event for everybody. Unfortunately the riverboat is sold out during January–June, just 12 minutes after going live on September 8th last year, but bookings for the period of July to December will go on sale online at 12pm on January 19 next week. Mr & Mrs Smith New Italy Hotel Collection

Mr & Mrs Smithの新しいホテルガイド、 「Mr & Mrs Smith Hotel Collection: Italy」が、先月21日に出版された。Mr & Mrs Smithの他のガイドと同じく、スタイリッシュなデザイン、美しい写真にセンスのいい色使いと、素敵な本に仕上がっている。掲載されているホテルも、プチホテルから中規模デザインホテル（大規模高層ホテルチェーンはない）、シティホテルからリゾート、そして値段もリーズナブルなところから長期滞在は考えられない高級ホテルまで、Mr & Mrs Smithならではのテイストの良いホテルが集められている。

強いて欠点をいえば、ライトグレーやスモーキーイエローなど、薄い色の背景に白地の文字がとても読みにくいこと。旅行雑誌の記事のように、ライターの個人的体験を綴ったホテルレビューが、ちょっと長くて鬱陶しいこと。ルネッサンス・アートのYES/NOチャートが意味不明なこと。パスタのイラストがパスタに見えないこと（写真の方が分かりやすいと思う）、か。

Mr & Mrs Smith‘s new hotel guide,” Mr & Mrs Smith Hotel Collection: Italy” is published last month. Like other Mr & Mrs Smith‘s gudes, the book is stylishly made: cool design, nice photos, and sophisticated colours. Hotels selected for the book are sleek and chic, typical of Mr & Mrs Smith, and in good variety: from petit B&B to moderate size boutique hotels (but neither skyscrapers nor international mega chains on the book); affordable to upscale that makes me hesitate to stay long; city hotels as well as country retreats.

If I have to list up shortcomings of the guide, it would be: hard-to-read white types on light colours like light gray and smokey yellow; hotel reviews based on writer’s personal experiences, like in articles on travel magazines, are a bit long and irritating (a list of facts is well enough on a guide); make-no-sense YES/NO chart for “HOW TO…identify Renaissance art”; and illustrations of pasta which don’t look like pasta – photos maybe easier to understand this case.
