The Counter at The Delaunay European Café @ Aldwych

Aldwychに最近オープンしたヨーロピアンカフェ・Counter at the Delaunayは、隣にある、オーストリアやドイツなど中央ヨーロッパにあるクラシックなカフェがコンセプトのレストラン・Delaunayのカジュアル版。Delaunayは、古くは名店・Ivy、2003年開店のWolseleyを成功に導いたレストラングループ・Rex Restaurant Associatesが、近年ZédelとColbertに続いてオープンさせた。

Counter at the Delaunayは、ダークウッドを基調にアールデコ風のインテリアでまとめられ、壁に飾られたフレーム入りの古いポスターがレトロな雰囲気を醸し出していて、ウィーンなどで良く見かけるクラシックなカフェを思わせる。イートイン・テイクアウトともに、ダンプリング入りチキンスープやソルトビーフ（コーンビーフ）・プレッツェルなど、文化が花開いたオーストリア＝ハンガリー帝国の食べ物や、見た目麗しいケーキやアフタヌーン・ティー（午後3時以降）などが、日曜以外毎日夜7時半まで提供されている（メニュー）。New York Beef Hot Dog（£4.50）とChicken soup with dumplings（£3.95）が、私たちのこの日のランチ。共になかなか美味しかったけれど、それ以上に感動したのがケーキ。持ち帰りも含め、Dobos（ドボシュトルタ）、チーズケーキ、ザッハトルテの3種を試したが、どれも日本人好みの繊細な味。美味しいケーキ屋が少ないロンドンでお薦めのお店です。

The Counter at the Delaunay is a new European style café on Aldwych, adjacent to The Delaunay, more upscale Grand European inspired restaurant & café with ambience of Central Europe, such as Austria, Germany and France. The Delaunay is one of the three newly opened restaurants together with Zédel and Colbert in recent years by Rex Restaurant Associates, the founder of Wolseley and Ivy.

The Counter is casual version of the Delaunay, but similarly decorated in art-deco style with dark wood furniture and old posters in frames on the walls, like classic cafés in Vienna. It serves take-out or eat-in Austro-Hungarian influenced food  (menu) throughout the day until 7:30 pm everyday except Sundays, such as chicken soup with dumplings or salt beef pretzels, as well as cakes and afternoon tea (after 3pm). We ordered New York Beef Hot Dog (£4.50) and Chicken soup with dumplings (£3.95). Both were pleasantly decent, but more than their savoury food, I highly recommend their cakes – we had Dobos, cheesecake and Sachertorte, and they are all beautiful to look at & really delicious!

Katalin Varga @ Screen on the Green

エンジェルにある映画館・Screen on the Greenで、「Katalin Varga（カタリン・ヴァルガ）」を見た。ルーマニア・英・ハンガリー合作のKatalin Vargaは、ハンガリー在住のイギリス人監督、Peter Stricklandの作品。Reading出身の監督は、ミュージシャンやアマチュア劇団の俳優、英語教師など異色の経歴を持ち、短編映画の制作を経て、今回、初の長編作に至った。彼の伯父の残した遺産を使い、たった11人のスタッフと2万5千ポンドで作り上げた超低予算映画だが、2009年ベルリン映画祭（ベルリナーレ）で芸術貢献賞を受賞した秀作だ。途中でお金がなくなり、編集作業を中断せざるを得なかった時期もあったが、幸いルーマニア人プロデューサーの目に留まり、作品を仕上げることが出来た。その後は上り坂、ベルリン映画祭やエジンバラ映画祭等数々の映画祭へ出品、フランスの映画配給会社も決まった。（詳細はガーディアン紙のインタビューを参照）イギリスでは10月9日から上映が始まり、小難しい映画批評家からも高い評価を得ている。

Katalin Vargaは、ハンガリー語を話すルーマニア・トランシルバニア地方の田舎を舞台に繰り広げられる復讐と贖罪の物語。幸せな家庭を築いていたカタリンは、一人の友人に11歳の息子オルバンが夫の実の子供ではないことを告白した。しかし、この秘密の会話が何故か漏れて、誰もが顔見知りの小さな村で噂はあっという間に広まり、カタリンは、噂を耳にした夫に、息子とともに追い出されてしまった。途方に暮れたカタリンは、病気の祖母のところへ行くとオルバンに告げ、オルバンの実の父親である強姦犯に復讐を遂げるために旅に出る。緑豊かな美しい田舎の情景とは裏腹に、ひとつの悲劇が、さらなる悲劇を引き起こす。誰もが不幸になっていく、救いようのない負の連鎖。因果応報。きっかけとなった強姦事件を除き、どの残酷な行いにもその被害者にも同等に同情の念がわき、最後には何が正しくて、何が正しくないのか分からなくなる。Katalin Vargaは、最近見た映画で、最も心を打たれた作品だ。平日の昼過ぎとは言えど、観客が私を含めてほんの数人だったのは、本当にもったいない。

ところで、主人公のカタリンが、若かりし頃のメリル・ストリープに見えるのは私だけ？？

I saw a movie “Katalin Varga” at the Screen on the Green in Angel. Romania/UK/Hungarian film, Katalin Varga is the directorial debut of British director Peter Strickland, and won 2009 Berlin Film Festival Silver Bear award for Outstanding Artistic Contribution in the Sound design. Strickland from Reading, now a resident in Budapest, is a musician/amateur theater actor/English teacher-turned-film director. He used the inheritance from his uncle to fund the movie, and completed the project for extremely low budget of £25,000 with only 11 staffs for shooting. The money run out while he was editing the movie, and he was forced to stop editing and to look for a job for a while. But luckily he found two Romanian producers to give him a hand to finish the film making. After that was like a dream story – won a Berlin Film Festival award, invited by several film festivals, been snapped by a French distributor. See a detail on a interview by the Guardian. The film was released on October 9th in UK and won a heart of tough British movie critiques.

Set in a Hungarian-speaking part of the Romanian region of Transylvania, Katalin Varga, is a story of revenge and redemption. The story starts from when Katalin tells her dark secret to one of her friend– the real father of her 11-year old son Orbán is not her husband. The rumor spreads fast in her small rural village where everyone knows everyone, and her husband blames her and kicks her and her son out from his home. Telling Orbán that they are going to visit her sick mother, Katalin sets out to find the real father of her son, who raped her 11 years ago, to take revenge. Contrary to the sceneries of beautiful countryside, one tragedy leads further tragedies. No one ends happy. Helpless vicious circle of hatred and despair. Retribution. All the cruel acts and its victims in the film equally generate viewer’s sympathy, other than the rape which caused the tragic fates. At the end, you don’t know what is good and what is bad anymore. Engaging, mournful, and thought-provoking, Katalin Varga is the most impressive movie I have seen this year. It’s a shame that there were only few audiences in the cinema.

By the way, am I the only one who thinks that Katalin looks like young Meryl Streep??
