“Biutiful” @ Prince Charles Cinema, Leicester Square

先日、チャイナタウンの近くにあるPrince Charles Cinemaで、現在公開中の映画「Biutiful（ビューティフル）」を観た。Prince Charles Cinemaは、最新のハリウッド映画からカルト、アートハウス、古典まで、違う映画を週に10本以上上映する、「repertory cinema（レパートリー・シネマ）」と呼ばれる独立系映画館で、映画ファンの間でカルト的な人気を誇る。サウンド・オブ・ミュージックやロッキー・ホラー・ショーなど、観衆が映画音楽に合わせて一緒に歌う「Singalonga Shows」や特別イベントなども行われる。現在地に移った1991年より低価格路線をとっていて、最近増設された上階スクリーンで上映される映画は£7.50（平日5時まで）/£9.50、地下上映分は£5.00（平日5時まで）/£6.00。年間£10で会員になるとさらにお得で、第1週目平日5時までの地下上映価格が何と£1.50！

We saw the movie “Biutiful” at the Prince Charles Cinema near Chinatown the other day. Prince Charles Cinema is a repertory cinema, showing a rotating program of cult, arthouse, and classic films alongside recent Hollywood releases, typically more than ten different films a week on two screens. The cinema has achieved a cult status amongst movie fans, and also hosts “Singalonga Shows”, screening of sing-a-long version such as The Sound of Music as well as The Rocky Horror Picture Show. The cinema has operated low ticket pricing policies since 1991 when it moved to the current location. Ticket prices for recently added second screen in the upper levels cost £7.50 (weekday before 5pm)/£9.50, and prices for cinema downstairs are £5.00(weekday before 5pm)/£6.00. Prices with £10 annual membership are even cheaper, starting from £1.50 for 1st weekday matinees downstairs!

「Biutiful（ビューティフル）」は、アカデミー賞にもノミネートされた『バベル』を撮った、アレハンドロ・ゴンサレス・イニャリトゥ監督の最新作で、スペイン・バルセロナを舞台に、がんに冒されたシングルファザーのウクスバルが、危険な闇世界を生きる中で、父親としての自分、家族、愛、スピリチュアリティ、犯罪、罪悪感、そして迫りくる死など、様々な葛藤を抱えてもがく姿を描くドラマ。ペネロペ・クルスの夫であるハビエル・バルデムが主人公のウクスバルを演じ、カンヌ映画祭主演男優賞を受賞した。

ウクスバルには明るい面と暗い面がある。二人の子供に対しては強くて愛情深い父で、アルコール中毒で情緒不安定な妻とは別れたあとも良い関係を維持しようともがく。ウクスバルは、実の兄と中国人犯罪組織のボスとともに、路上で不法に物品販売、時に麻薬取引まで行うアフリカ移民や、中国人移民への不法労働の手配など、闇取り引きで生計を立てている。彼のパートナーたちと違って、ウクスバルは搾取する不法移民たちにも、尊厳を持って対応する。そんなある日、自分が末期ガンに侵され、余命数週間と診断され、死の恐怖に直面しながらも、子供たちとの残された時間を大切にしようとするが、さまざまな困難が彼を襲う。

21グラムやバベルにも共通する、イリャニトゥ監督独特の美しくも悲哀溢れる映像や、バルデムの熱演は素晴らしかったけれど、2時間22分もの上映時間の間、この重苦しい雰囲気に浸り続けるのはちょっと辛い。不法移民との関係が少し美化され過ぎという気もするし、折りにふれスクリーンに現れる亡霊？生霊？といった超常現象にも少し興ざめ。ちょっと期待外れだったかも。

Biutiful is the dark drama from Mexican director Alejandro González Iñárritu (21 Grams and Babel). It is a story of Uxbal – a cancer-ridden single father who struggles to reconcile fatherhood, love, spirituality, crime, guilt and mortality amid the dangerous underworld of modern Barcelona. Javier Bardem won Best Actor at the 2010 Cannes Film Festival with his role of Uxbal.

Uxbal is a man with a bright side and a dark side. He is a strong but caring and affectionate father to his two children, and struggles to maintain a healthy relationship with their mother, despite her problems with alcohol and instability. Uxbal is also a criminal who oversees a small underground empire alongside Chinese crime boss and Uxbal’s impulsive brother. Uxbal deals from drugs to construction, but unlike his partners in crime, he tries to treat those around him with dignity even as he trades in human misery. His precarious world begins to collapse when he’s diagnosed with a terminal cancer and has only few weeks left to live; he tries to put his affairs in order in the time he has left, but runs into big trouble (synopsis reference: fandango.com).

Like in 21 Grams and Babel, the directors’ beautiful cinematography with intense sadness and Bardem’s powerful acting is impressing, but it was quite exhausting to immerse myself in the gloominess for 2 hours and 22 minutes of screening. Also I thought the relationship between Uxbal and the illegal immigrants seems to be too goody-goody and unrealistic, and some paranormal scenes with ghosts and stuffs were too much. Overall, a bit disappointed…

Anvil! The Story of Anvil

８０年代にデビューした、カナダのヘビー･メタル・バンド「Anvil（アンヴィル）」のインディー系ドキュメンタリー映画、「Anvil! The Story of Anvil（アンヴィル！　夢を諦めきれない男たち）」を見た。私がヘビーメタルファンだからではない。１０代の頃、ヘビーメタルはとても人気だったが（歳がばれますが）、私はマドンナやデュラン・デュラン、ビリー・ジョエル等が好きで、ぼさぼさロン毛、タイトジーンズまたはレザーパンツのメタル系は敬遠していた（今でもそうだが）。でもこの映画は、イギリスのメディアのレビューで軒並み評判がよく、主な日刊紙の評価は、The Timesが５つ星、The Daily Telegraph、The Guardian、The Independentは４つ星。辛口批評の多いイギリスメディアの評価が上々、ということはとても良い映画なのだろうと思ったのだ。結果は、やっぱり久々に見る良い映画だった。

アンヴィルの結成からのメンバー、Steve ‘Lips’ Kudlow（ボーカル）とRobb Reiner（ドラム）は、カナダ・トロント出身で１０代の頃からの親友。８０年代にちょっと活躍したもののその後は落ちぶれ、５０代となった二人は、家族の生活のためにリップスは子供の給食配達、ロブは大工をしながら、今もロックスターとしての成功を夢見て、細々と音楽活動を続けている。久々の大仕事、ヨーロッパ・ツアーはトラブルの連続、人の入りも少なかったが、それでもめげない２人は、リップスのお姉さんから借金をしてまで、イギリスのプロデューサーのもとでアルバムを制作。デモテープをレコード会社に送るが、なしのつぶて。そんな中、アルバムを聴いたという日本人プロモーターから、幕張メッセでのロックフェスティバル参加の誘いがある。日本は、かつてアンヴィルがボン・ジョビらと共に「スーパー･ロック’８４・イン・ジャパン」の熱狂のステージに立った、思い出の土地。しかし、彼らはフェスティバルの１番手、ヨーロッパでの失望から、人の入りが悪かったらどうしようと不安になるのだが、ふたを開けると、たくさんの観客に迎えられる、という感動のストーリー。

いろいろな困難を経験しつつも、常にポジティブで前向きに（特にリップス）、３０年近くの長い間、夢を追い続ける生き様。ヘビー・メタルへの情熱。喧嘩しつつも支え合う、二人の友情。そんな二人を少々呆れつつも暖かく見守る家族。笑いあり涙あり、観るものに勇気と希望を与えてくれる映画だ。ミッキー・ロークが主演する「The Wrestler（レスラー）」も、歳をとっても夢を捨てない男の生き様を描いている（女はもっと現実的。全てを犠牲にしてまで夢は追わない）という点で似ている。「レスラー」の方は、もっと悲壮感漂うが、「レスラー」が好きな方は、きっとこの映画を気に入る事と思う。

この映画の後、アンヴィルはまた注目を浴つつあるそうだ。４月にはカナダ、アメリカで映画が公開される。残念ながら私の好みの音楽ではないからCDは買わないけれど、二人の成功を深く願っている。

We saw a indie documentary ‘Anvil! The Story of Anvil‘, about the 80’s Canadian Heavy Metal band, ‘Anvil’. Not because I am a fan of them or heavy metal. Heavy metal was very popular when I was a teenager (now you can assume my age), but I prefer Madonna, Duran Duran or Billy Joel etc. and avoided (and still do now) metals with lousy long hair with tight jeans or leather pants. However, we decided to see this movie because mainstream British media all gave good reviews – 5 stars by The Times, 4 stars by, The Daily Telegraph, The Guardian, and The Independent. If these British strict film critiques like it, we thought that this movie should be good, and it really was.

The members from the beginning, Steve ‘Lips’ Kudlow (vocal) and Robb Reiner (drum), are from Toronto and friends from teenagers. After a moment under spotlight in 80s and then being forgotten, Lips and Robb are now in their 50s still dream of success as musicians but have to work as delivery driver for children’s school meals and a carpenter for their family living. A big tour in a long time ended up miserable with all kinds of obstacles and with fewer audiences than they expected. Then they took a risk to borrow money from Lips’ sister and ask a British producer who produced Black Sabbath to help them make a new album. However, no record label interested in ‘outdated old rockers’. One day they got a phone call from Japanese promoter who heard their new music and they were invited for a rock festival in Japan. Japan is the memorable place for them – they played at ‘Super Rock ’84 in Japan’ along with Bon Jovi, Scorpions, and Whitesnake. They were the first group to play in the festival and were anxious if there were not many people – like in the European tour. The result was moving and happy ending – they were greeted by excited big crowds, like in 80’s.

Their ultra positive attitudes (especially Lips) against all the hardships, their passion towards heavy metal and never giving up their dream of success for almost 30 years, their friendships and their family support – this is a ‘feeling good’ movie to give us a hope, perhaps more than award winning ‘Slumdog Millionaire’. The movie is pretty similar to ‘The Wrestler‘ – both portraying middle age men who don’t give up their dream (women are more realistic, I am afraid) – though ‘Anvil!’ is more optimistic. If you like ‘The Wrestler’, you may like ‘Anvil!’ as well.

After the movie was made, Anvil is getting more attention what they are always hoping for. ‘Anvil! The story of Anvil’ will be shown in Canada and US in April. Unfortunately I don’t buy their CD as this is not my cup of tea, but I really hope for their future success they really deserve to.

Movies + Gallery @ ICA

最近、ICA通いが続いている。バッキンガム宮殿やトラファルガー広場の近くに位置する、Institute of Contemporary Arts (ICA)は、小さいながらも、現代美術ギャラリー、映画館（２スクリーン）、ブックストア、バーが併設された、文化施設。トークショー、ライブ、クラブナイトなど、多彩なプログラムを展開する。

ICAへは映画を見に行く事が多い。ICAでは、インディペンデント系や外国映画を上映していて、日本映画もよくやっている。最近ではさくらんや東京ソナタ、また今日終了した国際交流基金（The Japan Foundation）の企画した「Reality Fiction: Japanese Films Inspired by Actual Events」では、実際の出来事に触発された新旧の日本映画６点が上映された。日本映画は、通常の映画館ではあまりやっていないのでありがたい。しかし、最近の日本映画は、映像的にはきれいだけれど、５０、６０年代のような、社会問題に切り込んだ迫力のある作品がなく、少し物足りないなと思う。日本の映画黄金時代の作品は、時折、BFI Southbankで、黒澤明や小津安二郎、大島渚、今村昌平等の大監督の作品を上映している。

ギャラリーでは、現在、アメリカ人映像作家・ショーン・スナイダーのイギリスでの初めての個展、「Sean Snyder, Index」を開催中。冷戦からイラク戦争まで、日常生活をドキュメントしたビデオ、写真が展示されている。ウクライナの村立美術館の様子を撮影したソビエト映画のビデオインスタレーションは興味深かったが、後の作品は少しインパクトがなかった。

I had several chances to go to ICA recently. Institute of Contemporary Arts (ICA), located near Trafalgar Square and Backingham Palace, is a small cultural complex containing modern art gallery, cinema, book store, and bar. ICA has a variety of cultural activities such as talk show, live, and club night. 

I sometimes go to see a movie to ICA. ICA cinema with 2 screens shows independent, art-house, and foreign movies, including Japanese movies. Recently, I saw Sakuran, Tokyo Sonata, and some of the ‘Reality Fiction: Japanese Films Inspired by Actual Events‘ series organized by the Japan Foundation. Recent Japanese movies are well shot and atomospheric, but don’t have much impact nor analyze social problems, like Japanese movies in 50’s and 60’s. You can see movies in the golden times at BFI Southbank, such as Kurosawa, Ozu, Nagisa Oshima, or Shohei Imamura etc.

At the gallery, first solo exhibition in a British institution of the American Artist Sean Snyder, ‘Sean Snyder, Index‘, just opened. The exhibition includes video installation and photos, documented the daily life from the Cold War to the Iraq War. The video installation about the village museum in Ukraine, filmed by Soviet Union, was fascinating, but the other works are something we have seen already, and have less significant, to my eyes.
