このブログの貴重な情報源の「London’s Best Coffee」アプリ。私もアプリを見つけたMも、本当は教えたくないけれど、既にインストール済みの人もいるだろうし、そのうち見つける人もいるだろうから、出し惜しみせず紹介します。

150以上の独立系カフェや屋台、ロースター（焙煎業者）を登録したこのアプリ、ロンドンで美味しいコーヒーが飲めるカフェを探すのにとても便利。使い勝手もいいし、常に情報はアップデートされ、新しいカフェも素早く追加される。カフェ情報は、住所と開店時間のみならず、使用するコーヒー豆、エスプレッソマシン、ドリップ式、サイフォン式、プレス式などのコーヒーの抽出方法までリストアップするというこだわりよう。お気に入りのカフェを評価したり、他の人たちにシェアすることも出来る。

お値段は£1.99、Google playとiTunesで入手可能。

I am not sure if M, who found this app, or I really want to share this app with you, as this is one of the important sources of my blog. But probably some of you already have it or you would find it sooner or later anyway.

With over 150 best independent cafés, stalls and artisan roasters registered, “London’s Best Coffee” app is excellent tool to find a café serving speciality coffee near you in London. The app is regularly updated and new cafés are quickly added. It includes reviews, photos, maps and news, and easy to use. Even I can use it. The information of the cafés is very detailed – not only address and opening hours but also the type of beans, espresso machines, and even available brew methods each café uses. You can rate your favourite places and share with others.

Breakfast & Brunch Secrets London Guide

Deck of Secretsが11月に発行した、ロンドンの朝食＆ブランチガイド「Breakfast & Brunch Secrets London」。タバコぐらいの大きさの箱に、ロンドンの高級店からカジュアルなカフェまで、現地ライターが厳選した新旧52店を紹介したカード（表はお店の写真と情報、裏は地図が印刷）が入っている。ちなみに、ジョーカーを除くトランプのカードの数も52、そして1年を週換算した数も52（＋1日）。週1回1店行くと、1年で全店制覇出来る計算になる。

2003年にオーストラリアのメルボルンで生まれたDeck of Secretsは、現在、ダイニングやブランチ、バー、ショッピング、スパなどのテーマ別に、メルボルン、シドニーなどオーストラリアのみならず、ニューヨーク、ロンドン、エジンバラ、香港、ダブリン、バルセロナ、モントリオールやバンクーバーなど世界の人気都市のガイドを25冊以上発行している。

このガイドと出会ったきっかけは、出版社から、エンジェルのオーストリアン・カフェ・Kipferlの写真を使わせて欲しいという連絡があったこと。出来上がった、この可愛いガイドを送って下さった。自分の写真が使われているから宣伝している訳ではなく（ブログに書いてくださいという依頼もありません）、Albion、Caravan、Lantana、Leila’s Shop、Look Mum No Hands!、J+A Cafe、St Ali、Milk Bar、St John Hotel、Dishoom、Hackney Pearlと、今まで私がブログで取り上げたところも多く、親近感を感じたから。それに、マーサ・スチュワート・リビング風のパステルカラーのパッケージもレイアウトもキュートだし、値段も£4.99とお手頃。またカード型なら、ガイドを持ち歩かなくても、お財布にお目当ての店のカードを一枚しのばせるだけでOK。iPhoneとWindows 7のアプリ版もあり。

“Breakfast & Brunch Secrets London” guide is published in November 2011 by Deck of Secrets. 52 places carefully chosen by local writers across London, from high end to casual, new and old, are included in this cigarette size box containing card-style guides – one place per card, a photo and information printed on the front and map on the back. ’52’ is the same  number of cards contained in a playing card deck, as well as a number of weeks in one year – so you can cover all places in one year if you go one place every week. Clever!

Launched in 2003 in Melbourne, Australia, Deck of Secrets now publishes over 25 titles in different categories like dining, brunch, bar, shopping, spa etc, covering not only Australia such as Sydney and Melbourne, but also popular cities worldwide including New York, Vancouver, Montreal, London, Edinburgh, Dublin Barcelona and Hong Kong.

I got to know this guide because the publisher contacted me to use one of my photo of Kipferl, an Austrian café in Angel. She kindly sent me this cute guide after going on sale. I am writing about this guide, not because my photo is used or I was asked to publicise it (which they never did), but the guide includes many places I mentioned in my blog, such as Albion, Caravan, Lantana, Leila’s Shop, Look Mum No Hands!, J+A Cafe, St Ali, Milk Bar, St John Hotel, Dishoom, and Hackney Pearl – this make me feel very close to the guide. Also its Martha Stewart-like package design and layout with pastel colours is nice, and the price of £4.99 (€7.95/$9.95 in AUS/US/Canada) is quite reasonable. You don’t need to bring an entire guide but only one card in your choice in your wallet – how handy, isn’t it? iPhone and Windows 7 Apps are also available.

Daily Candyの今日のニュースレターで、Airbnb.comの記事を読んだ。「air bed-and-breakfast」を称するAirbnb.comは、部屋を貸したい人と借りたい人を結ぶウェブサービスで、2008年に設立、サンフランシスコに本部を置く。居間のソファから別荘、お城、運河に浮かぶナロウボートまで、167カ国8000都市のさまざまな物件が5万件近く登録され、オンラインやiPhoneから無料で登録、予約できる。貸し手は空いているスペースを使って収入を得ることができるし、借り手はホテル代わりのみならず、イベントや臨時保管場所など、いろんな用途に安く場所を借りられ、期間も1晩から長期間まで、空いている限り必要なだけ利用できる、便利なシステムだ。Airbnbは24時間顧客サービスで予約や取引を手助けし、借り手・貸し手双方からのレビューなどで不審な取引をチェック、問題のないように監視している。

どうして今Airbnbがロンドンで注目されているか？4月29日に行われる予定のウィリアム王子とケイト・ミドルトンさんの結婚式に、110万以上の人々がロンドンを訪問すると予想されている。ロンドンの12万のホテルの部屋は予約が殺到し、予約できたとしても値段が高過ぎるとか場所が悪いということもあり、Airbnbによれば、スペースに余裕があるロンドンの人たちは一晩£200以上手にすることができるとのこと。それに来年2012年は、オリンピックも開催されるので、お金儲けのいいチャンスだ。

You can list for free for any spaces, a sofa in your flat, a holiday home, a castle, or even a narrow boat on a canal, at any price. You can list or book online or from an iPhone. Hosts can get extra money for your spare space and guests can have a place for any purpose, a travel accommodation, extra storage, or a party, for any period from just a night to months, as long as the place is available – a system which makes everyone happy except hotels. Airbnb.com facilitates bookings and financial transactions, providing 24-hour customer support, and looks carefully for suspicious behavior with reviews from both guests and hosts, to make the community free of trouble.

Why Airbnb is good for Londoners now? It’s expected that over 1.1 million people will come to London to celebrate the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton on April 29. The city’s 120,000 hotel rooms is hard to reserve and even availabe, the price could be expensive or location may be inconvenient. So there is a chance for Londoners to “earn £200 or more per night renting out anything from a spare room to an entire flat on Airbnb during the Royal Wedding”, according to Airbnb. If the date is not suitable, Olympic 2012 will come next year.

Sounds great, but only if you have an extra space and we don’t, unfortunately. But you don’t have to be a host to take advantage from Airbnb. Great British Railways: Royal Mail World’s First “Intelligent” Stamps

今年8月19日に発行された、ロイヤル・メールの記念切手シリーズの「Great British Railways」。British Rail（イギリス国鉄）が製造した最後の標準クラス9F蒸気機関車「Evening Star」の製造終了50周年を記念して発行された。イギリスの蒸気機関車を取り上げた、初めての記念切手となる。

These are Royal Mail’s special stamps “Great British Railways” issued in August 19, celebrating the 50th anniversary of British Rail’s last steam locomotive, the 9F Class ‘Evening Star’. This is the first in a series of special stamp issues commemorating classic British locomotives.

一見したら普通の切手だけれど、これはロイヤル・メールいわく、世界初の「インテリジェント」切手なのだそうだ（Royal Mail プレスリリース）。iPhoneまたはAndroidを搭載したスマートフォンを通して切手を見ることで、画像認識技術が作動し、ロイヤル・メールが制作したオンライン専用コンテンツが立ち上がるという、切手において世界初のシステムで、9月3日よりスタートした。JunaioというアプリをインストールしたスマートフォンでGreat British Railways切手を見ると、1936年に郵便局によって作られたドキュメンタリーで有名になったW・H・オーデンの詩「The Night Mail」を、ドクター・フー出演俳優のBernard Cribbins（バーナード・クリビンス）が読み上げる短編映画が再生される。この技術は、ロイヤル・メールが将来発行する記念切手のいくつかにも採用される予定だそうだ。

These stamps look just ordinary stamps, but Royal Mail claims these are the world’s first “intelligent” stamps (Royal Mail release). Launched on September 3, it is the first in the world to work with image recognition technology, which, when activated by a smartphone on the iPhone or Android platforms, will launch exclusive online content created by Royal Mail. Viewing the Great British Railways stamp,via the Junaio app installed smartphone, will direct you to a short film showing Doctor Who actor Bernard Cribbins reading Auden‘s famous poem “The Night Mail“, first made famous in The Post Office’s own film from 1936. Royal Mail will use the technology available on selected future special stamps.

‘Street Museum’ Mobile app by The Museum of London

今日のBBCニュースで取り上げられていた、Museum of London（ロンドン博物館）のiphone用無料アプリ「Street Museum」をダウンロードした。Museum of Londonは、60年代から70年代にかけて、シティ・オブ・ロンドンの爆撃で破壊されたエリアを再開発したバービカン・センターの一部で、先史時代から現代に至るまでのロンドンの歴史を展示している。

Street Museumは、ロンドンの歴史を物語る写真や絵画のオンライン・カタログ。1666年のロンドン大火からカーナビー・ストリートに代表される1960年代のスウィンギング・ロンドンまで、博物館所蔵の何百枚もの写真や絵画にアクセス、ロンドンの日常の街角や歴史的出来事を垣間みることができる。

使い方は簡単。アプリを開くと出てくる地図でお目当ての場所を見つけるか、携帯端末に内蔵されているGPSで近場にあるイメージを探し、地図上にあるピンをタップするか、「3D View」ボタンをタップし、カメラを見たい場所に掲げると、その場所の古いイメージが出てくる。そして、そのイメージをタップすれば、その場所の歴史的トリビアを読むことができる。

既に、10万人がこのアプリをダウンロードしたそうだが、今日のBBCニュースで取り上げられたので、さらにダウンロード数は増えるだろうな。

I downloaded a free iphone app ‘Street Museum‘, created by the Museum of London, after I saw the BBC News picked it up today. The Museum of London documents the history of London from the Prehistoric to the present day. It is located close to the Barbican Centre, as part of the Barbican complex of buildings created in the 1960s and 70s as an innovative approach to re-development within a WWII bomb damaged area of the City.

‘Street Museum’ is an online catalogue of photos and paintings from London’s history. From the Great Fire of 1666 to the swinging sixties, you can have an access to hundreds of images from the museum collections that showcase both everyday and momentous occasions in London’s history.

It is easy to use – select a destination from the map or use your GPS to locate an image near you. Or press ‘3D View’ and hold up your camera to the present-day location, and the old image of the same place appear on your screen. Then tap the old image for historical facts.

Already 100,000 people have downloaded this app, and after today’s BBC news coverage, many more will probably download it.
