イタリアンのチェーン・Jamie’s Italian、BBQ＆ステーキ店のBarbecoa、不運な生い立ちの若者たちをシェフとして訓練するレストラン＆慈善団体のFifteenなど、さまざまな形態のレストランを経営するセレブリティ・シェフ、ジェイミー・オリヴァー。慈善家気取りでテレビ等でヘルシーな食生活をお説教（自分は太めのくせに）、大英帝国勲章・MBE受賞した名声を活かして、レストラン帝国を着々と築き上げた。嬉しいことに、最近はテレビやメディアでもあまり見なくなったが、街を歩くと彼の店が嫌でも目につく。お目当てのレストランがクローズしていたので、以前ここのピザが美味しいと何かの記事で読んだと言うMの強い希望で、彼の店・Union Jacksで嫌々ながらランチした。

「British Classics（伝統的イギリス料理）」を謳う割に、ピザやホットドッグなど、他国の料理も売り物。イギリス産の厳選食材を使っているのでオッケーということらしい。薪を使った窯で焼き上げたアメリカ風ピザ生地は粉っぽくて、取り立てて美味しい訳じゃないけれど、トッピングのトマトソースとモッツァレラチーズは新鮮で熱々。ホットドッグも、オニオンやキャベツのフィリングが多すぎるのが難点だけれど、表面をパリッと焼いたパンに、美味しいソーセージが上手くマッチしている。食材にこだわるだけに、悔しいけれど味の方は悪くない。でもシェフよりビジネスマンと化したジェイミー・オリヴァーはどうしても好きになれないので、もう行かない。

Celebrity chef & restauranteur, Jamie Oliver. He owns different types of restaurants such as Jamie’s Italian (Italian), Barbecoa (BBQ & steak), Fifteen (charity restaurant0 etc. He preaches people on TV how unhealthy they eat, though he himself doesn’t look fit. Using his fame as a TV presenter and MBE holder, he has created his restaurant empire throughout UK and abroad. Yes, I don’t like Jamie as you can guess from my writing. I am happy that I don’t see him on media as much as before, but I see his restaurant here and there when I go out, no matter if I don’t want or not. Unfortunately the restaurant we wanted to go was closed that day, so I had no other choice but going to his British restaurant Union Jacks, as M insisted because he read an article that their pizza was good.

Union Jacks is “all about bringing back nostalgic British classics”, as their website says, though what they sell are not all British, such as their ‘incredible’ pizza and ‘great British’ hot dogs. But it is ok for them as they use ‘artisanal local’ ingredients. In fact, their wood-fired flatbread pizza, came with fresh tomato sauce and mozzarella was not bad, though I don’t like that kind of American style dough. Their hot dog was delicious with handmade free-range sausage served in between slightly toasted bread, although the fillings (onions and cabbages) were too much. I don’t want to admit, but their food was not bad. But I don’t come back to Jamie’s restaurants, simply because he irritates me for some reason.

British Steaks & Barbecoa by Jamie Oliver

肉大好きの私だけれど、イギリスのステーキは正直好きじゃない。脂身が少ないのでドライで固く、最後の一口を食べる頃には顎が筋肉痛状態。それに焼き加減が適当で、決まって希望する焼き具合よりもさらに焼かれて出て来るので、私はいつもミディアムレアを頼む（それでも時々ウェルダンになっているけど）。でも、Mが行きたいと言うので仕方なく、One New ChangeにあるBarbecoaに行った。

Barbecoaは、私の嫌いな（理由は以前のエントリーにあり）ジェイミー・オリヴァーが、ニューヨークでBBQレストランを経営するアメリカ人シェフ・Adam Perry Lang（アダム・ペリー・ラング）とコラボして出来た、バーベキュー＆ステーキ店で、内装はTom Dixon（トム・ディクソン）が手がけたそうだ。1階にはスタイリッシュだけど高そうな肉屋も併設している。この日は、Dry-Aged Sirloin Steak（320g/£30。ドライエイジド＝むきだしのまま熟成させた、サーロイン・ステーキ）とDry-Aged Rump  Steak（250g/£19。ドライエイジド・ランプ・ステーキ）を注文。サーロインは「cèp（ポルチーニ茸だと思うのだけれど、不明）」とローズマリーをクリーム状にしたもの、ランプは炭焼きの茄子、エシャロット、トマト、チリとスイート・マジョラムをピュレにした付け合わせと一緒に出され、ステーキも付け合わせの味もまずまず。でもやっぱり、イギリスのステーキ特有のパサパサ感は否めない。鴨の脂で揚げたDuck Fat Chips（£4。太めのフライドポテト）もMashed Potato（£4。マッシュポテト）は美味。まあ、ポテト系はイギリスではハズレはあまりないのだが。デザートのバニラ・アイスクリーム（£6）は、クリームの味ばかりでバニラの味はせず×。

以前、リバプール・ストリート駅近くにある、セレブシェフ・Marco Pierre White（マルコ・ピエール・ホワイト）の経営するSteak & Alehouseにも行ったが、これまたBarbecoa以上に肉が固く、幻滅した経験がある。ステーキはやっぱり、ある程度脂身のある方が美味しい。イギリスでステーキに何千円も払うのなら、日本のファミレスのチープなステーキセットの方がいい。高いお金を出すなら、やっぱり日本の霜降りか、フィレンツェ風ステーキ・Bistecca alla Fiorentina（ビステッカ・アッラ・フィオレンティーナ）。ちなみに「wagyu beef」はイギリスでも好評。でも高級デパートやレストラン以外で売られているものは、日本産和牛ではなく、オーストラリア産やイギリス産など。こちらで「wagyu」の定義は霜降り肉であって、日本産牛肉ではないよう。

Though I am a meat-lover, I am not very keen on British steaks. It is pretty lean, which is good for health, but too dry and too hard for me. Every time I order a steak, my jaw suffers from muscle ache about when I finish the last piece. Also it tends to be overcooked, and often I get a steak all in brown, even though I always ask mediam-rare. M begged me to eat at Barbecoa at One New Change, so we went though I was reluctant.

Barbecoa is a US-style barbecue and steak restaurant, and is Jamie Oliver (whom I hate – search the reason in my past entries, if you like) ‘s joint venture with NY– base American barbecue expert Adam Perry Lang. Its interior is done by Tom Dixon, and you can say it’s design-y. There is also a beautiful & posh butcher, Barbecoa Butchery, on the ground floor.

On the visit, we ordered Dry-aged Sirloin Steak (320g/£30) and Dry-Aged Rump  Steak (250g/£19). Steaks were not bad, as well as relish coming with them: ‘cèp’ (I am not sure what it is, but I think it is porcini mushroom?) and rosemary cream for sirloin; and charred aubergine, shallots, tomato, chilli & sweet marjoram for rump steak – but steaks were still too dry for me. Duck Fat Chips (£4) and Mashed Potato (£4) were quite nice, but generally potato dishes cannot go wrong here. I don’t like their vanilla ice cream (£6) – didn’t taste vanilla but only cream.

Before, we also went to Steak & Alehouse owned by celeb chef Marco Pierre White near Liverpool Street station, but their steaks were even tougher than Barbecoa and were quite disappointing. I believe that a steak tastes better with some fat in it. For me, the best steak is shimofuri (or marbling) Japanese wagyu beef or Bistecca alla Florentina – I love juicy stuff and don’t like lean meat! Wagyu beef has gained a good reputation here in London, but what we see mostly  are not from Japan but produced in other countries such as Australia and UK. The definition of ‘wagyu’  is a kind of  breeds of cattle genetically predisposed to intense marbling, but not what normally Japanese think – ‘wagyu’ is literally Japanese cow in Japanese.

Central Saint Giles Designed by Renzo Piano

イタリア人建築家・Renzo Piano（レンゾ・ピアノ）がデザインし、2010年5月に完成したCentral Saint Giles。レンゾ・ピアノのイギリス初の作品となったこのビル群は、オフィス、住居、ショップ＆レストランの商業スペースを兼ね揃えた複合施設で、外側は13万4千もの光沢のあるテラコッタ・タイルで覆われている。日本の三菱地所も出資しているというこのビル、Tottenham Court Road（トッテナム・コート・ロード）駅東側という好立地ということもあり、住居部分は、ロンドンでの拠点にするため、またロンドンで勉強する子女の住居として、主に香港、シンガポール、マレーシア人に買われたらしい。建物には、屋上緑化をはじめ、環境に優しい様々な仕掛けが施されており、バイオマス・ボイラーは80％の暖房と温水をまかない、冷却タワーから排出される水は灌漑用、そして水洗トイレに再利用されるそうだ。

商業エリアは、最初はテナントも少なく閑散としていたが、またかのジェイミー・オリバーのブリティッシュ・Union Jackをはじめ、ハンバーガー店・Byron、ブラジルのストリートフード・Cabana、イタリアンのZizzi（味はファミレス並みでお勧めしないけど）、スイーツの美味しいカフェ・Peyton & Byrne、そしてヘルシー・ファーストフードを謳うPod（近日オープン）と、チェーン系レストランが徐々にオープン、なかなかの賑わいになった。チェーンばかりであまり特別感はないけれど、ロンドンのど真ん中という立地に加え、レストランは広くて席数が多いので、食事難民になりかけた時に便利かも。

Central Saint Giles is a mixed-use development (residence, office and commercial spaces) on the east of Tottenham Court Road station. Designed by renowned Italian architect Renzo Piano as his first work in UK, the façades of this building complex is covered by 134,000 green, orange, lime and yellow glazed terracotta tiles. Due to its excellent location, many housing units are reported to have been sold to buyers from Hong Kong, Singapore and Malaysia seeking accommodation for visits to London and for their children who study here. The development has been designed with a number of features intended to reduce its environmental impact: biomass boilers which provide 80% of the heating and hot water; re-use of the water discharged from the cooling tower for irrigation systems and the flushing toilets; planted roof terraces to absorb rainfall.

The commercial spaces were hardly occupied at the beginning, but little by little the spaces have been filled up by restaurants and cafés – Jamie Oliver (again!) ‘s British Union Jack, our favorite hamburger Byron, Brasilian street food Cabana, Zizzi Italian, café with yummy sweets Peyton & Byrne, and ‘healthy’ fast food Pod (opening soon). Mostly chains and nothing special, but the complex is located in the heart of London and the restaurants are large and have lots of seating, so it may be useful when you can’t find any place to eat – or if you are a big fan of Jamie and wants to contribute to his business!

またまたジェイミー・オリヴァー登場。テレビ番組、コマーシャル、レストランと、うんざりするぐらい、そこらじゅうにジェイミーがはびこっている。11年続いた大手スーパーマーケット・チェーン、セインズベリーの広告塔役が今年のクリスマスシーズンに終了すると思ったら、早速、シーフード食品メーカーのYoung’sという新しいパートナーを見つけたみたい。

9月発売開始のこのジェイミーの冷凍シーフード製品、今安売り中なので、試しに買ってみた。彼の初の冷凍食品シリーズは現在、fishcake（フィッシュケーキ：魚入りコロッケみたいなもの）５種、fish finger（フィッシュ・フィンガー：マックのフィレオフィッシュの細長い指サイズ版）１種、そしてfish pie（フィッシュ・パイ：パイクラストを使わない、魚入りパイ）３種の計９商品。セールスポイントは、伝統的食材のhaddock（ハドック）やcod（タラ）に変え、 これまであまり利用されていなかったpollock（ポラック）やwhiting（ホワイティング）など、「sustainable（持続可能）」な魚を使用していること。ヘルシーな食生活普及のため、イギリスのみならずアメリカでもお節介を焼いてきたジェイミー、新たな布教活動に取り組むのはいいが、お味の方は残念な仕上がり。味がなく、魚のうまみが感じられない。お値段は安いが、サイズも小さい。あのジェイミー様をもってしても、安価でクオリティの高い食品を作り出すのは容易くないと言うことか。

Here is Jamie, the king of food, again. He is all over the place, from TV program and advert to his spurning restaurants. He will be leaving Sainsbury’s advert with his last appearance for this Christmas, after 11-year partnership with the supermarket chain. But he already found a new partner, Young’s seafood, so you won’t miss him.

Jamie’s frozen fish range, came out in September, have been on offer and I purchased some to try. His first range of branded frozen seafood makes up of 9 products at this moment; 5 fishcakes, 1 fish fingers, and 3 fish pies. The selling point of the range is that those have been sourced from sustainable and under-utilised alternatives to traditional haddock and cod, including pollock and whiting. Goody-goody Jamie who is obsessed with healthy eating, preaching people in UK as well as USA to eat well, is doing another good deed; sustainable and healthy. OK, his ambition is great, but the tastes were rather disappointing. Bland. No flavour, no taste of fish. Small price but small size. To make a good & healthy food for cheap doesn’t seem to be easy, even for mighty Jamie.

One New Change @ Cheapside

新しいショッピング・モール「One New Change」がシティのCheapside（チープサイド）にオープンした。オープン初日の4時間で、1万2000人が訪れたという。古英語の「ceapan」が起源の「cheap」は「marketplace（市場）」を意味し、ショッピング・センター建設にうってつけの場所に思えるけれど、セント・ポール大聖堂の隣という場所柄、その建設は論議を巻き起こし、あのチャールズ皇太子も反対したという曰く付き。

2007年に取り壊された元Bank of England（イングランド銀行）跡地に建てられた、8階建て・高さ40mのガラス張りのこのビル、デザインは、今年のSerpentine Gallery（サーペンタイン・ギャラリー）の夏季限定パビリオンを設計した、フランス人建築家のJean Nouvel（ジャン・ヌーヴェル）が担当。その外見から「stealth bomber（ステルス爆撃機）」と言う愛称で呼ばれているそう。地下1階から地上2階に、TopshopやH&M、Banana Republic、Mango、そしてジェイミー・オリヴァーとアメリカ人バーベキュー・シェフ、Adam Perry-Lang共同経営のBBQレストラン「Barbecoa」など約60軒の店舗やレストラン・カフェがテナントとして入り、その上がオフィスのフロアになっている。6階はセント・ポール寺院をはじめ辺りを見渡せる広々とした展望スペースになっている。来年には、展望レストランやゴードン・ラムゼイのレストラン「Bread Street Kitchen」などもオープンする予定。

サーペンタイン・パビリオンの印象的な真っ赤な建物ではなく、外見に少しデザインの要素を含みつつも何の変哲もないショッピング・センターに仕上がっていて、少し期待外れ。でもこの不景気のせいか、モールには人も少なく、ゆっくり買い物するのにはもってこい。ロンドンのどこに行っても見かけるチェーン系のお店やレストランばかりなのが玉にキズだけれど、人混みをかき分けながらオックスフォード・ストリートで買い物しなくても、ある程度のものがここで手に入るので、このモールは私たちにとっては便利な存在だ。

On October 28th, a new shopping mall “One New Change” in Cheapside opened just next to St Paul’s Cathedral. It is said that 12,000 people visited the mall in the first 4 hours of its opening. The word “Cheapside” derives from the Old English “ceapan,” meaning “marketplace”, seems to be the perfect place for the shopping center, but its sensitive location opposite to St Paul’s caused some controversy during its planning and construction, including criticism from Prince Charles himself.

This 8-storey / 40m high glass building was constructed on the former Bank of England site which was demolished in 2007. It was designed by French Architect Jean Nouvel who also designed the 2010 Serpentine Gallery Pavilion. Around 60 shops and restaurants / cafés, such as Topshop, H&M, Banana Republic and Mango, as well as a joint-venture BBQ restaurant “Barbecoa” by Jamie Oliver and American BBQ chef Adam Perry-Lang, occupy the bottom three floors, and the rest is used as office space. There is a spacious roof terrace, overlooking St Paul’s on the 6th floor. Next year, the mall will have a roof terrace café & restaurant, as well as Gordon Ramsay‘s restaurant “Bread Street Kitchen” and few others.

On contrary to the impressive all-red Serpentine Pavilion, “One New Change” ended up in rather cold and ordinary shopping mall, though some bits of design factors included, and it is a little disappointment. Also the mall is full of chains that you can see any high street in London. However, there were not many shoppers, probably due to this recession, and I could comfortably walk around the stores. Overall, the opening of the “One New Change” is good for us, so that we don’t have to necessarily go all the way to Oxford Street to shop, without pushing and bumping other shoppers to reach what we want.
