“The History of English in 10 Minutes” by The Open University

The Open University（オープン大学）は、世界で初めて遠隔教育を中心とする高等教育に成功した、1969年設立の公立大学。Milton Keynes（ミルトン・キーンズ）に 本部を置き、国内13州すべてに地域拠点を持つ。現在、75ヶ国に22万5千人以上の学生を擁し、生徒数はヨーロッパ一、世界で最大規模の大学の一つに数えられる。ちなみに日本語でのウェブサイトまである。

写真の「The History of English – in 10 minutes」は、オープン大学が YouTubeチャンネルと iTunes U Channelsのために作成したビデオで、イラストとナレーションを使い、1600年の英語の歴史を面白おかしく10分間で説明するというもの。ビデオは各1分10章に分かれており、ローマ帝国撤退後やってきたアングロ・サクソンの言語を元に、キリスト教宣教師がもたらした宗教関係のラテン語やバイキングの言葉約2000語、1066年のノルマン人による征服によるフランス語約1万語（主に政治や公的ビジネス、食関係）、シェークスピアが作った新語なんと2000語（puppyやeyeballsなど）、欽定訳聖書の作成の際に使用されたメタファーやモラルに関する語、王立協会設立と科学の発展により作られた専門用語、そして大英帝国時代に植民地からもたらされた現地語（barbecue、canoe、boomerang等）が加わっていった。1756〜65年に作られたA Dictionaries of the English languageと1857年から71年かけて作成されたオックスフォード英語辞典により、英単語の公式な綴りが確定された。その後、アメリカ先住民と世界中からの移民の影響を受けたアメリカ英語、コンピュータ時代到来により生み出されたIT用語、そしてHinglish（ヒンドゥー英語）、Chinglish（中国英語）、Singlish（シンガポール英語）といった現地化された英語から取り入れられた単語など、いろいろな要素が合わさって現在の英語が作り上げられた。

ナレーションはかなり早いけれどイラストはわかりやすいし可愛い。また典型的なブリティッシュ・ジョークにもかなり笑える。簡単なイギリスの歴史も学べるので、ためになります。

The Open University is a distance learning and research university, founded in 1969 by Royal Charter in the UK and funded in part by the British Government, and it was the first successful distance teaching university in the world. The administration is based in Milton Keynes, but has regional centres in each of its thirteen regions around the country. With more than 250,000 students enrolled, including more than 50,000 overseas students in 75 countries, it is the largest academic institution in Europe by student number and one of the world’s largest universities.

「The History of English – in 10 minutes」, the photo above, is the first cross-platform commission for the Open University’s YouTube and iTunes U Channels. The total of 10 mini-episodes (1 minute each) explain 1,600-year history of English with animated illustrations and typical British humours. Starting from the arrival of Anglo-Saxons after Romans were gone, Christian missionaries brought some religious Latin words and Viking left about 2,000 words. Then 10,000 French words, mainly related to official businesses and culinary, were added after Norman Conquest in 1066. Shakespeare created massive 2,000 words and phrases such as puppy and eyeballs, and the King James Bible, completed in 1611, created terms of metaphor and morality. English of science was needed when science was advanced and the Royal Society set up in 1660. During the British Empire between 1583 – 1914, many local words were brought back, such as barbecue, canoe and boomerang, from British colonies worldwide. A Dictionaries of the English Language was published in 1765 after 9 years of work, and Oxford English Dictionary after 173 years of its predecessor came out in 1928 with astonishing 71 years of patient effort, and the proper spellings and meanings were established. American English has been developed with influences from Native Americans and immigrants from worldwide, and British English has been taking many words from it. In the recent decades, IT terms have been created after computer was invented, and English has become a global language and localised English such as Hinglish (Hindu English), Chinglish (Chinese English) and Singlish (Singapore English) exports some words to original English.

Narrations are quite fast but illustration gives us a good understanding. You can also learn a little bit of British history. After all, these are very cute and funny!

Zumba Fitness Class @ Virgin Active

最近イギリスで流行中のZumba（ズンバ）。ズンバは、サルサやメレンゲ、マンボ、クンビア、レゲトン、カリプソ、ソカ、サンバ、チャチャ等のラテンアメリカ系音楽に、ラテンダンスをベースにヒップホップ等の要素も取り入れ、音楽とダンス、エクササイズを融合させた、エアロビック・フィットネスプログラム。コロンビア出身で、マイアミをベースに活躍するダンサー／フィットネス・インストラクターであるBeto Perez（ベト・ペレス）が考案、アメリカでブームを巻き起こし、世界に広がった。

私が行っているジム、Virgin Active（ヴァージン・アトランティック航空を擁するイギリスのヴァージン・グループがオーナーのスポーツクラブ。過去のエントリー「ヴァージン・メディア」参照）にも、今年1月からクラスが始まったので、何回か行ってみた。人気があるだけあって、クラスは人で溢れていて、派手に動いたり、ステップを間違えたりすると前後左右の人にぶつかりそうになる。20代とおぼしき若い女性が多いけれど、男性や30〜40代女性もちらほら。クラスは45分または1時間（クラスによって違う）で、ラテンの明るく情熱的な音楽にのって、ほとんど休みなく踊りまくる。正統派のラテンダンスと違ってパートナーも要らないし、やさしいステップが多く、間違ってもいいからとにかく体を動かして、楽しくエクササイズするというのが売り物。クラスの最後の方は、もうヘトヘトで、足ももつれそうになるが、気分は爽快。DVDとかも売ってるみたいだけれど、クラスで皆と一緒に踊って汗を流すのが楽しい。これにはまる人も多く、ズンバのクラスやイベントを渡り歩く人たちもいるそう。インストラクターによってクラスの質も違うので、色々なクラスやスポーツクラブを渡り歩いて、自分のお気に入りのクラスを探すのがいいかも。ちなみに、他のスポーツクラブより月会費は少し高いけれど、ヴァージン・アクティブのメンバーになると、全国約70あるクラブをどこでも利用できる。

Zumba is a recent fitness sensation in UK. Created by Miami-based Columbian dancer and fitness trainer Beto Perez, Zumba is an aerobic fitness program, which combines steps from a variety of Latin dance and uses corresponding Latin music such as salsa, merengue, cumbia, reggaeton, calypso, soca, samba, mambo, and cha cha, as well as hip hop and other music. Zumba is the fastest growing fitness based dance craze in the USA, and now its popularity has been spreading the to the other parts of the world.

I have a membership of Virgin Active health club, a part of Richard Branson‘s Virgin Group (see also my past entry about Virgin Media), and I went to Zumba class few times, as the club now has a Zumba class since January this year. It was a quite popular class with lots of people excitedly waiting in the studio – there was no space for an overzealous movement and an wrong step, without hitting someone around you. Participants were mainly young women in 20s, but some older people and few men as well. The class lasts usually 45 minutes to 1 hour, depending on the class, and you just dance fanatically all the way through with a passionate Latin soundtrack, with very little break. The concept of Zumba is just to have fun with easy-to-learn steps – don’t worry about a mistake. Also you don’t need to look for a partner, like traditional Latin dance, nor to dance with a same sex partner. At the end of the class, I was so exhausted and unable to make a light step, but I felt so good afterwards. DVD is also available, but it is more fun to dance and sweat together with a bubbly instructor and others in the class. Some are addicted to Zumba, and turn up any classes and events across the city. The quality of a class depends on a instructor, so it is better to try out some classes to look for your favorite instructor. If you become a member of Virgin Active, you can use over 70 Virgin Active clubs across the country – so it is worth its little pricier monthly membership fee.

Macondo Cafe @ Camden Passage, Angel

水・土曜日に開催されるアンティークマーケットで有名な、Angelのカムデン・パッセージ（Camden Passage）にあるカフェ、Macondoでランチをした。2003年にホクストン・スクエアにできたスパニッシュ・ラテンカフェの２号店。ギャラリーも併設した店内は、アート作品が壁を飾っています。デリから選べる食べ物の他、タコスやスパニッシュオムレツ等のラテン食、またケーキ類が充実している。土曜日の今日はとても混んでいて、スペイン人やイタリア人等ラテン系のお客も多々。私たちは、スパニッシュ・コロッケ、ラザーニャを注文。ラザーニャはイタリア人Mのお口に合ったようだが、ほうれん草の一杯詰まったコロッケは味が薄く、ちょっと残念。量が多いので、小食の方はご注意を。

今日、カフェの前を通ったけれど、Macondo Cafeはどうやら閉店してしまったようです。Macondoの前にあったカフェ2店も次々閉店したので、この場所は何か因縁があるのかも。

We had lunch at a Spanish/Latin cafe, called Macondo on Camden Passage, in Angel.  Camden Passage is known for the antique market on every Wednesday and Saturday. After their success in Hoxton Square, Macondo opened a second cafe in Angel in December 2007. Macondo has a variety of “Spanish/Latin American” foods as well as cakes/puddings, and there are some artworks on the wall of cafe/gallery. The cafe was crowded on today (Saturday), and there were some Spanish and Italians as well. We ordered Spanish croquets and Lasagna – Italian M liked the Lasagna, but my croquets with spinach didn’t have any taste… The amount was huge, so be careful if you are not so hungry!

I passed by Macondo Cafe today and it seems to be failed. Two cafes before Macondo also closed in a short period time, and the place may be cursed…
