Meatballs @ Farringdon Road, Clerkenwell

トレンディなレストランが集まる、クラーケンウェルのExmouth Marketに程近い場所に昨年秋にオープンしたMeatballsは、その名の示す通り、ミートボールの専門店。ミートボールと言えば、ニューヨークのイタリア系アメリカ人の代表的一品で、Café Pastaや今はなきHamburger Unionの創始者であるオーナーも、マンハッタンのお店「The Meatball Shop」からインスピレーションを得たそう。

Meatballsは、1870年に建てられた19世紀後半の典型的な労働者階級向け「chophouse（肉料理専門店）」のThe Quality Chop Houseだった場所にある。この建物は歴史的価値を有するListed Building（リスティッド・ビルディング）のGrade Ⅱに認定・保護対象となっているため、床に固定されたオーク材のテーブルや椅子、鋳物で装飾がかたどられた壁などは昔のまま（→詳細）。The Quality Chop Houseには、日本からロンドンに遊びに来た友人を連れて、一度食べに行ったことがある。ヴィクトリア時代の古き良きイギリスのたたずまいを残し、ステーキやラムチョップなど伝統的イギリス料理を出すこのお店に、また行きたいと思っていたのだが、残念ながら数年前に閉店してしまった。

メニューは、5種類＋週変わりのミートボール（ビーフ、ラム、ポーク、チキン、ベジタブル：3個£4.45、追加1個£1.25）に、「underneath（＊ミートボールを上からかけるため、その下にあるもの、と言う意）」のパスタ、マッシュポテト、PEARL BARLEY（はと麦）のリゾット（£2.95〜£3.95）を組み合わせる。またミートボールバーガーやSliders（ミニバーガー3個）、サラダ類、フライドポテトやロースト・キャロットなどの野菜のサイドディッシュ、デザート類もある。この日は、ポークとローズマリーのミートボール（＋パルメザンチーズのクリームソース）とはと麦のリゾット、ビーフとリコッタチーズのミートボール（＋トマトソース）とマッシュポテトの組み合わせで注文。Free Range（放し飼い）や高品質の肉類を使ったミートボールは、こねられ過ぎていてつくね状態で、ひき肉の食感がない（私はひき肉の形が残ってるものの方が好き）。はと麦のリゾットのプチプチ感もちょっとしつこく、やはり米のみか、はと麦にお米と混ぜた方が美味しい気がする。やはり正統派のトマトソースのミートボールに、マッシュポテトかスパゲッティ、が正解か。

とてもイギリスらしくて、いい雰囲気のお店なのだけれど、固定式の椅子は背もたれと直角で幅が狭く大層座り心地が悪いので、行かれる方は奥の普通の椅子に座ることをお勧め。

Meatballs is a restaurant dedicated to meatballs, as its name suggests, opened last autumn just few steps away from trendy  Exmouth Market. Meatballs is the best known Italian-American cooking in New York, and the owner of Meatballs, a founder of Café Pasta and late-Hamburger Union chain got an inspiration from The Meatball Shop, a popular Manhattan restaurant.

Meatballs is housed in Grade 2 listed building of the former Quality Chop House, built in the 1870s and rare example of a late 19th century working-class chophouse, offering traditional British food. The place preserves original Victorian decor such as oak benches and tables bolted to the floor and walls with ornate castings (→more info). I dined at the Quality Chop House once with my friend visiting to London from Japan. I wanted to come back to this atmospheric hearty British restaurant, but unfortunately it closed few years ago.

Meatballs offers five kinds of balls (beef, lamb, chicken, vegetarian courgette, and pork) as well as weekly ‘guest’ meatball (£4.45 for three; an extra ball for £1.25). You can order the balls together with ‘underneath’ (spaghetti, mashed potatoes, pearl barley risotto, and egg pasta: £2.95〜£3.95). There are also meatballs burger and ‘sliders’ (3 x mini burgers), as well as salads, side vegetables (french fries, peas, roast carrots, creamed spinach etc) and deserts (→menu). We ordered beef and ricotta balls with tomato sauce on buttered mashed potato, and pork and rosemary with a parmesan cream sauce on pearl barley risotto. Their meatballs with high quality meat were mashed too much  – I prefer the one retaining some shape of ground meat. Also the pearl barley risotto was not a good choice for meatballs. Rice only or mix with rice would be better, perhaps. I guess meatballs with tomato sauce & mashed potato or spaghetti is the safer option there.

I like their very Victorian interior, however, I have a recommendation for prospective customers – avoid the fixed wooden seats and take the normal chairs on the back room. These are very short in depth (for people with smaller bum??) and the back rest with 90º angle was very very uncomfortable…

Castles (near) Kent : Bodiam Castle

シッシングハースト城から車で20分程のところにあるBodiam castle（ボディアム城）は、正確に言うとケント州ではなく、隣のイースト・サセックス州にある。このお濠に囲まれた四角形のお城は、エドワード3世に仕えた騎士・Edward Dalyngrigge（エドワード・ダリングリッグ）により、百年戦争におけるフランスの侵略からの防衛、そしてステータスと富を象徴する彼自身の住まいとして、1385年に建立。四角形という構造上、防護壁と中庭に沿って、様々な部屋が作られた。Dalyngrigge家が途絶えると、婚姻関係によってLewknor（ルークノー）家の手に渡り、16世紀までその所有下にあったが、その後は様々な所有者を経た末、1643年に取り壊され、廃墟となった。1829年にJohn Fuller（ジョン・フラー）に買い取られ、Fullerを含む、George Cubitt（ジョージ・キュビット）初代Ashcombe（アシュコム）男爵、ジョージ・カーゾン (初代カーゾン・オヴ・ケドルストン侯爵)と続いた所有者の手で一部修復された。カーゾン侯爵の死後、1925年にNational Trust（ナショナル・トラスト）に寄贈され、第一級指定建造物、指定遺跡として保護されている。

廃墟に近いと言えど、いくつかの部屋と塔は観光客に開放されている。お城の歴史を展示や15分間のDVDで学んだり、狭くて急な螺旋階段を上り、塔の上から景色を眺めるのもいいし、お城に続く橋の上で観光客が投げ入れるパン屑などに群がるたくさんの鴨や鯉を見るのも楽しい。子供たちは、広大な芝生の上や、ドイツ軍の襲撃（結局ドイツ軍は来なかったらしいけれど）に備えて敷地内に作られた第二次世界大戦中の小さな要塞の中で歓声を上げている。とてものどかで風光明媚なお城。

Bodiam castle, 20-minute drive from the Sissinghurst Castle, is located in neighboring East Sussex, not in Kent. This quadrangular-shaped moated castle was built in 1385 by Sir Edward Dalyngrigge, a former knight of Edward III, as his home to show off his status and wealth and as a defence against French raid during the Hundred Years’ War. Chambers were built around the outer defensive walls and inner courts. After Dalyngrigge family’s line became extinct, the castle passed by marriage to the Lewknor family, who had owned the castle until at least the 16th century. Since then, Bodiam had been on different hands and was dismantled in 1643. It was left as a ruin until its purchase by John Fuller in 1829, but was partially restored by Fuller, George Cubitt, 1st Baron Ashcombe, and then the last owner of the castle, Lord Curzon. It has been owned by the National Trust since 1925, donated by Lord Curzon on his death, and is protected as a Grade I listed building and Scheduled Monument.

Although quite knocked down, towers and some rooms, where you can learn the history of Bodiam on 15-minute DVD as well as exhibition, are open to public. You may want to walk up narrow and steep spiral staircases to the top of the towers, where you will be rewarded with wonderful views. You can enjoy watching dozens of desperate ducks and carps fighting for food thrown by visitors on the bridge which connects the park and the castle. Kids can play on the grass surrounded the castle and around the WWII bunker built in the castle ground against German invasion, which never occurred. Very peaceful and picturesque castle.
