Look Mum No Hands! Cycle Café @ Clerkenwell

長く寒い冬が終わり、ようやく最高気温が20度を超えた近頃、心なしか自転車に乗ってる人が俄に増えたような気がする。

Old StreetとGoswell Roadの交差点の少し東にあるLook Mum No Hands!（「ママ、見て！手放しで自転車に乗れるよ！」という意味だと思う）は、自転車修理ワークショップと駐輪場を備えた Cycle Café（サイクル・カフェ）で、4月にオープンしたばかり。以前に書いたLock 7とともに、Time Out誌のロンドンのベスト・サイクル・カフェの1つに選ばれている。広々としたカフェの中は、自転車やパーツ、ロードレースの写真がそこかしこに飾られ、奥のスクリーンには、5月8日より開催中の自転車レース、ジロ・デ・イタリアが放映されていた。ジロ・デ・イタリアと言えば、2008年のレースはMの母親の家の前を通るコースになっていて、ちょうどその時イタリアにいた私たちは、矢のように通り過ぎていく世界の第一線で活躍する選手たちを目の当たりにし、興奮したことを思い出す。

Look Mum No Hands!は、Old Street、Clerkenwell Road、Theobald’s Roadなどと名前を変えながらセントラルとイースト・ロンドンをつなぐルートに面しているので、通勤途上ちょっと一休みしたいサイクリストたちには打ってつけのロケーション。味に定評のあるSquare Mile CoffeeのコーヒーやSUKI Teaの紅茶の他、ハムや野菜の盛り合わせ、サンドイッチ、ケーキ等の軽食もある。ビールやワイン等のアルコールもあるけれど、飲んだ後に自転車に乗る時は、車の往来が多い道なので、くれぐれもご注意を。

Finally long and cold winter is gone and the maximum temperature have crossed over 20ºc, and I see more cyclists in the city recently. Look Mum No Hands!, just opened in April, is a cycle café/bar with bicycle repair workshop and bike parking in the premise. The café, together with Lock 7, is listed as one of the best cycle café by the Time Out.

This spacious café is filled with bicycles, bike parts, and photos of road races, and was showing Giro’ d’Italia taking place from May 8 when we were there. M’s mum’s house was on the route of 2008 Giro d’Italia. We happened to be there at that time, and we had an honor to watch bullet-speed world class cyclists passing just in front of us – it was my first and only experience to see a cycle race.

Look Mum No Hands! is located on the busy route connecting central and East London and changing its name to Old Street, Clerkenwell Road, Theobald’s Road and so on, and it is a perfect location for cyclists on commute to take a little break. The café serves delicious Square Mile Coffee and SUKI Tea, as well as some light meals and snacks such as sandwiches, cured meats or veggie platters, and pastries and cakes. Beer and wines are also available, but be careful when you hit the road after you have some, as Old Street is a quite busy road with full of cars.

L’eau à la Bouche deli & cafe @ Broadway Market

イーストロンドンのBroadway Market（ブロードウェィ・マーケット）にある、l’eau à LA BOUCHE （ロアラブッシュ）delicatessen & caféが、元の場所の数件先に、最近リニューアルオープンした。以前は、狭い店の中と外にいくつかテーブルと椅子があるだけだったが、新しい店はゆったりとしたスペースで、カフェ部分もずいぶん大きくなった。が、いつも混んでいて、座る場所を確保するのが大変だ。客層は、イーストロンドンの典型的人種・リベラル左派や若者、クリエイター、子供連れのママたち。新聞はもちろん、左寄りのガーディアンだ。店名の「l’eau à LA BOUCHE」はフランス語で「唾が出るほど」、唾が出るくらい美味しそう、というような意味。ちなみに同題のフランス・ヌーベルバーグの映画の邦題は「唇（くち）によだれ」と、ちょっと官能的なタイトルになっている。フランス人がオーナーのこのお店は、セレクトされたヨーロッパ・イギリスの食品が並んでおり、注文してから作ってくれるサンドイッチもとても美味しい。ただ、いつも混んでいて、席がなかったり、サンドイッチが売り切れてしまってる事もあるのが、玉にきず。でもこのリニューアルのおかげで、以前に書いたLock 7にはあまり行かなくなってしまった。せっかくブログに書いたのに、ごめんなさい。。。

l’eau à LA BOUCHE delicatessen & café recently moved to a new place few meters away on the same street, Broadway Market in East London. Previously, there were only few tables and chairs in a small shop, but new place is more spacious and comfortable, and now it has much bigger cafe space with light coming through its big windows. But of course everyone want to come to this nice place, and you always have to fight for a seat, like a ‘musical chairs’. People who come to the cafe are typical East London habitants – ‘liberals’, young people, creators, and young mums with buggies. Newspapers at the cafe is, of course, lefty the Guardian. The name ‘l’eau à LA BOUCHE‘ is ‘mouth waters’, and the same name of a French New Wave movie by Jacques Doniol Valcroze, and the theme song by Serge Gainsbourg. This French-own deli/cafe offers a carefully chosen selection of Continental and British food, and their ‘made to order’ sandwiches are delicious. The problem is the shop is so popular that you cannot find a seat or their sandwiches is sold out sometimes. After the renewal of l’eau à LA BOUCHE, we don’t go as much to Lock 7 (I wrote before) anymore… Sorry, Lock 7!!
