Hackney Service Centre @ Hillman Street

先日、用事があって、初めてHackney Service Centreを訪れた。2010年2月にオープンしたHackney Service Centreは、Borough of Hackney（ハックニー区、ロンドンの特別区の一つ）が住民に行政サービスを行う施設で、Hackney Town Hall（区役所）の近くにある。入口を入ると、広々とした吹き抜けのアトリウムが広がり、レセプションと待ち合いラウンジ、それをずらっと並んだ窓口が取り囲む。待ち疲れた時や問題が片付かなくてイライラした時のため（？）に、カフェもある。設計を担当したHopkins Architectによると、この建物はCO2排出量を10%削減、そして利用エネルギーの10％は再生可能資源によるもので、環境にも配慮されている。

毎年結構な額を支払いつつ、あんまり恩恵を感じられないカウンシル・タックス、この立派な建物に使われたのか。

We went to the Hackney Service Centre, opened in February 2010, for the first time the other day. The Hackney Service Centre is built to accommodate the Borough of Hackney‘s administrative staff and to make a place of contact for borough residents. The vast atrium houses the Council’s public reception with a waiting area, surrounded by numbers of service counters. There is also a cafe, in case you are exhausted from waiting or frustrated with your problem. According to the Hopkins Architect who was in charge of planning, this environmentally friendly building demonstrates 10% reduction in carbon emissions and 10% of energy generation from renewable sources.

Now I understand where our council tax money goes – we pay quite a lot every year with very little sense of benefit!

区役所広場は、新しい「creative quarter（クリエーティブ地区）」として、し新しい図書館（写真上）、テクノロジー＆ラーニング・センター、ハックニー博物館、また1901年に音楽ホールとして建てられ、最近リニューアルしたHackney Empireという映画館などが建ち並ぶ。

Hackney Town Hall Square has been developed as a new ‘creative quarter’, surrounding by a new Library (photo above), Technology and Learning Centre, Hackney Museum and the refurbished Hackney Empire, built in 1901 as a music hall.

Hackney Pearl @ Hackney Wick

2012年ロンドンオリンピック会場予定地のそば、Hackney Wick（ハックニー・ウィック）にあるカフェ・Hackney Pearl（ハックニー・パール）。オリンピック開催を2年後に控え、会場建設は順調、アーティストたちがスタジオを構え、地価上昇を狙った開発業者によって新しいアパートがあちこちに建設されているけれど、倉庫や工場に囲まれたこのエリアには、まだ小さな雑貨屋兼食料品店や冴えないカフェが数軒あるだけで、わざわざ訪れるほどのものは何もない。Hackney Pearlはその中でまさに真珠の輝きを放っていて、Time Out誌の「Eating and Drinking Awards 2010」のBest New Caféに輝いている。

店舗ユニットを二つ分使った広い店内は、フォーマイカのテーブルに、学校の教室にあるような懐かしい木製の椅子、床に敷かれたカラフルなラグ、白い壁に白いタイルに囲まれたキッチンカウンターと、とても居心地がいい。平日で、あのエリアとしてはリーズナブルとは言えない値段設定でも、近くにスタジオを構えるアーティストやクリエーターっぽい人たちで結構賑わっている。アーティストは食えないってイメージがあるけれど、結構儲かるのかも。

フードメニューは基本ブリティッシュ。軽い食事なら、スクランブルエッグが乗ったトーストなどのAll Day Breakfast（朝食と言えど、いつでも食べれる）やトーストされたパニーニ、スープ、ベジタリアン・メゼなど。ちゃんとした食事をしたいなら、肉や魚などのメイン料理も頂ける。旬の食材を出来るだけ使ったその料理は、他の人のテーブルを除き見ても美味しそうで、食欲をそそられる。ただ、私はランチは軽く食べたい方なので、必然的に選択肢が少なくなる。野菜嫌いの私は、ベジタリアン・メゼ（写真下。Mが注文）はパス。卵料理はやっぱり朝に食べたい。スープだとお腹がふくれない。パニーニは３種類しかなく、食材の質はいいとは思うんだけれど、使用しているパンが今イチ好みじゃないのが問題。

それより残念だったのがコーヒー。Square Mileのコーヒー豆を使っているにも関わらず、1回目は薄すぎ、2回目は少し酸っぱい後味が気になった。可愛くて居心地がいいカフェだけに残念。夏ならともかく、このカフェに行くためだけに、寒空の中を片道ベスパで約20分の距離をかけていくほどじゃないなあ。

A café Hackney Pearl is located near the 2012 Olympic park in Hackney Wick. Construction of the Olympic park has been progressing quite well. The area is becoming a new artists’ colony, and new apartment complexes has been built by real estate developers with big dreams in future prosperity of the area. But there is nothing special there yet, but beaten up warehouses and factories as well as few small grocers and shabby cafés. Hackney Pearl is the only thing shines like a ‘pearl’ in this hardcore industrial area. The café established its reputation as the Best New Café on Time Out’s Eating and Drinking Awards 2010.

This retro-looking and laid-back place makes everyone relax and happy, with cute Formica tables, classroom-look wooden chairs, colorful rugs, and good old white tiled kitchen counters. The place is favored by local arty/creative crowd and never be empty even in the weekday afternoon with not quite reasonable price for the area – I guess that artists can earn good money on contrary to a stereotypical public image.

Its food menu is based on hearty British recipes. All Day Breakfast like scrambled egg on toast, toasted panini, soup of the day, and veggie meze (photos on the bottom. M’s order) are for light meal, and bigger mains are available for empty stomachs. Their food is seasonal and produce is sourced as locally as possible, and looked delicious as I took a peep at other customers’ tables.  The problem is, I want to eat light for lunch, and inevitably there aren’t much choice for me – I am not a big fan of vegetable and can’t order vegetarian meze, and want to reserve eggs only for a breakfast. A bowl of soup is too small to fill my stomach. There are only three choices of panini, and the bread they use is not really my cup of tea, though filling is quite good.

I was disappointed by their flat white. They use coffee beans from famous Square Mile, but it was too watery for the first visit and had an sour aftertaste for the second time. For us, it may not worth to travel for about 20 minutes by vespa under the doomy winter sky in this season, to this café in the middle of depressing industrial estates. It is a shame because the place is so nice…

ところで、Hackney Pearlの隣にあったカフェ、Martabelle Kがオープンして半年ほどして突然クローズした。一度行きたいと思っていただけに残念。どうなったのかググってみたけれど、全く分からない。誰か知ってますか？

There was another café Martabelle K we really wanted to try next to Hackney Pearl, opened last November but closed last July after only a half year of its business. I tried to search what happened, but it is a mystery. Do anyone know what is all about?

Graffitis in My Neighborhood

アーティストたちが多く住むイーストロンドンのハックニー区にある我が家の近くには、グラフィティアート（ストリートアート）がそこかしこで見られる。有名なところでは、ステンシルを使った作品で世界的に知られるストリートアーティスト、バンクシーの「Hoodie」（フード付きスウェットを着た男：イギリスでは不良の代名詞）（写真上）。Shepherdess Walk（シェファーデス・ウォーク）を北上、Regent’s Canal（リージェンツ・カナル）にかかる橋の下にある。またバンクシー作品では、Essex Road（エセックス・ロード）にある薬局の壁に描かれた、テスコのレジ袋を国旗のように掲げて皮肉った「Pledge Your Allegiance / Very Little Helps」（忠誠の誓い/あまりためにならない（テスコのスローガン「Every Little Helps」をもじった）もある。クラーケンウェル（Clerkenwell）にある、Mが愛車のベスパを買ったバイクショップの壁面に描かれていた、時価30万ポンドの「Old Skool」は、たった£1,000で匿名のドイツ人に売られたとニュースで知った。その話をした時に、ショップのオーナーは、「購入者も壁をはがすのに大金がかかったし、誰でも持ってってくれたら良かったんだよ」と笑っていた。欲のない人だ。そのドイツ人は業者を雇い、6週間もかけて壁をはがして、持ち帰ったそうだ。

There are Graffitis here and there in our neighborhood in Hackney, East London, where many artists live. One of the famous one is “Hoodie” (photo above) by famous British graffiti artist Banksy who uses stencils to create his works. You can find it under the bridge over the Regent’s Canal, on the North of the Shepherdess Walk. Another one of Banksy’s work nearby is “Pledge Your Allegiance / Very Little Helps” on the wall of a pharmacy on Essex Road, with two children pledging allegiance to supermarket giant Tesco (the title is a parody of Tesco’s slogan, “Every Little Helps”).  “Old Skool“, worth £300,000, drawn on the wall of a motorcycle shop in Clerkenwell, where M bought his Vespa, was sold it to an anonymous German buyer for only £1,000. When we talked about it with the owner of the shop, he smiled and said “I am glad someone took the painting anyway, and he paid a lots of money for its removal, so it’s fine.” He was not greedy at all! The German hired Wall Paintings Workshop and it took 6 weeks for them to remove the painting.

一番近いのは、Prestwood Street（プレストウッド・ストリート）にある、オーストラリア生まれ・ベルリン在住のChristopher Charlie Isoeの作品（写真上）。マフィアのような男性の顔の上に、ピエロのようなメイクを施している。

The closest graffiti is Australian-born and Berlin-based Christopher Charlie Isoe‘s work on the Prestwood Street – a painting of a Mafioso-look guy with make-up of a clown on the top of his face.

二番目に近いグラフィティ（写真上）。元々はRentokil（レントキル・英ビジネスサービス企業。日本ではカルミックと提携）の事務所だった建物の壁にかかれた、アメリカ人アーティスト、David Choeの作品（敷地内の他の作品：１／２）。つい最近、彼が作品を制作している最中に通りがかったのだけれど、その時はカメラを持っていなくて写真を撮れなかった。彼のブログによると、２日かけて完成させたそう。今日通りかかった時に、ちょうど門の鍵が開いていたので、写真撮影に成功。この前には、ネズミの顔をした、黒の制服を来た警察官（？）が描かれていた（作者不明）。私は前の方が好きだな。写真を撮っておくんだった。

The second closest from us is on the wall of former-Rentokil building, painted by American artist David Choe (photo above. Other works in the same place 1/2). I passed by when he was working on it but I didn’t have my camera that day, but I was lucky today that the gate was open (usually locked) and had my camera with me. He took 2 days to finish the work, according to his blog. Before Choe’s work, there was a painting of 2 rat-face men in black (police?) uniform – I couldn’t find who did it. I prefer the previous work – I should have taken a photo of it.

私は基本的にグラフィティはあんまり好きじゃない。タギングとか、落書きや文字が書いてあるものはどれも似たり寄ったりで個性がないし、なんだかラフすぎて、ティーンエイジャー向けという感じ。でもその中では、元祖ステンシルアーティストのBlek the ratやバンクシーの作品は好き。バンクシーは時に政治メッセージが強すぎると思うけれど。また、Pizza EastやAlbionの近く、Redchurch Street（レッドチャーチ・ストリート）とClub Row（クラブ・ロウ）の角にある、ベルギー人アーティスト・Roaのリスのグラフィティ（写真下）もいい。Roaは、動物の絵をよく描いているようだけれど、同じRedchurch Streetにある豚2匹の顔はちょっと怖い。。。

To be honest, I don’t like graffiti much in general. It tends to be too busy and too much colors, and more or less it looks all the same (especially the writing). It looks too rough and edgy, and is for teenagers to me. However, I kind of like Stencils, such as the works of French Blek the rat, the godfather of stencil graffiti art, and Banksy, though I don’t like his tendency to be too political.  I also like Belgian artist Roa‘s ‘Squirrel’ (photo below), at the corner of Redchurch street and Club Row, near Pizza East and Albion. Roa seems to like to paint animals, but some of them look a bit scary, like the two pigs on top of each other on the same Redchurch street.

グラフィティは、立派なアートだと言う人もいるけれど、無許可であればそれは当然、違法行為。カウンシル（区役所）は、市民からの通報を受け付けていて、通報があれば、48時間以内に調査の上、カウンシル所有の建物に描かれたグラフィティで、不適切なものは24時間以内に、その他のものは14日以内に消去される（ハックニー区の場合）。あのバンクシーの作品の中にも消されたものがいくつかある。カウンシルも必要経費購入者もちで希望者に売って、それを区の財源にすればいいのにね。

Some say graffiti is an art, but if it is done without permission, obviously it is illegal. Borough Councils accept a report of illegal graffiti from public. Once reported, all reports of graffiti will be investigated within 48 hours, and offensive graffiti on buildings owned and run by the Council will be removed within 24 hours of a report being received, and non-offensive graffiti will be removed within 14 days (Borough of Hackney‘s case). Even some of Banksy’s works were erased or painted over due to its illegality – maybe the Councils should sell the graffitis, with removal on buyer’s expense, and get extra money to use for the community’s sake.
