Timberyard Cafe @ Old Street

人気カフェ・Look Mum No Hands!のすぐそば、オールドストリート沿いに数ヶ月前にできたTimberyard。広々としていて明るく、今風のインテリアでリラックスした雰囲気。地上・地下2フロアを有するこの大きなスペースで、人々は読書をしたり、コンピューターに向かったり、ミーティングをしたり、友人とお喋りしたりと、思い思いに時を過ごしている。Timberyardでは、特別にセレクトした生産者から食材やクオリティの高い紅茶、コーヒーを仕入れている。ラ・マルゾッコでJabberwockyブレンドのエスプレッソを入れ、そして紅茶を頼むと最も美味しく飲めるよう、最適時間をセットしたタイマーが一緒に出てくる。まさに優等生的なカフェだ。

私の初めての来店時は、非の打ち所はなかったのだが、私より一足先にランチしに来ているMは、ここのサンドイッチは普通、感動するほど美味しくはないと言う。私はお茶しただけなので何とも言えないのだが、確かにカウンターに並べられた食べ物を見ただけでは、特にそそられない。よっぽどお腹が空いて死にそうな時ならともかく、グラノーラとかポリッジ、キッシュとか食べないし、サンドイッチもここののようにパンにハムとかチーズとかを挟んだだけのものより、トーストした温かいサンドイッチの方が好き。スウィーツも、ブラウニーとかクッキーとか焼菓子系ばかりで、ケーキ好きの私の食指は動かない。私的にはこのカフェはお茶利用のみ、かな。

Another picture-perfect cafe on Old Street, few steps away from popular cafe Look Mum No Hands!. Hip, spacious, bright, and laid-back. In this large two-storey space, people enjoy reading, working, chatting, relaxing, meditating or whatever they want to do. Timberyard is a model cafe, offering speciality tea, coffee and artisan food sourced from carefully chosen producers. They brew their Jabberwocky blend espresso with La Marzocco with love, and serve teas with timer to ensure the perfect infusion.

Nothing to complain during my first trip to Timberyard. However, M who went there alone before (without telling me!), told me that their sandwich was OK, not great. I can’t judge myself, as I’ve never had food there. I like the place. Their tea & coffee are decent. But I am not sure about the food, judging by just looking at it. I don’t eat granolas, porridges, quiches and salads. I prefer toasties instead of just ham & cheese in between ‘artisan’ bread. And I am not a big brownie or cookie eater, unless I am starving. It is just my personal preference, and I rather enjoy just a cup of tea and ambience there.

Breakfast & Brunch Secrets London Guide

Deck of Secretsが11月に発行した、ロンドンの朝食＆ブランチガイド「Breakfast & Brunch Secrets London」。タバコぐらいの大きさの箱に、ロンドンの高級店からカジュアルなカフェまで、現地ライターが厳選した新旧52店を紹介したカード（表はお店の写真と情報、裏は地図が印刷）が入っている。ちなみに、ジョーカーを除くトランプのカードの数も52、そして1年を週換算した数も52（＋1日）。週1回1店行くと、1年で全店制覇出来る計算になる。

2003年にオーストラリアのメルボルンで生まれたDeck of Secretsは、現在、ダイニングやブランチ、バー、ショッピング、スパなどのテーマ別に、メルボルン、シドニーなどオーストラリアのみならず、ニューヨーク、ロンドン、エジンバラ、香港、ダブリン、バルセロナ、モントリオールやバンクーバーなど世界の人気都市のガイドを25冊以上発行している。

このガイドと出会ったきっかけは、出版社から、エンジェルのオーストリアン・カフェ・Kipferlの写真を使わせて欲しいという連絡があったこと。出来上がった、この可愛いガイドを送って下さった。自分の写真が使われているから宣伝している訳ではなく（ブログに書いてくださいという依頼もありません）、Albion、Caravan、Lantana、Leila’s Shop、Look Mum No Hands!、J+A Cafe、St Ali、Milk Bar、St John Hotel、Dishoom、Hackney Pearlと、今まで私がブログで取り上げたところも多く、親近感を感じたから。それに、マーサ・スチュワート・リビング風のパステルカラーのパッケージもレイアウトもキュートだし、値段も£4.99とお手頃。またカード型なら、ガイドを持ち歩かなくても、お財布にお目当ての店のカードを一枚しのばせるだけでOK。iPhoneとWindows 7のアプリ版もあり。

“Breakfast & Brunch Secrets London” guide is published in November 2011 by Deck of Secrets. 52 places carefully chosen by local writers across London, from high end to casual, new and old, are included in this cigarette size box containing card-style guides – one place per card, a photo and information printed on the front and map on the back. ’52’ is the same  number of cards contained in a playing card deck, as well as a number of weeks in one year – so you can cover all places in one year if you go one place every week. Clever!

Launched in 2003 in Melbourne, Australia, Deck of Secrets now publishes over 25 titles in different categories like dining, brunch, bar, shopping, spa etc, covering not only Australia such as Sydney and Melbourne, but also popular cities worldwide including New York, Vancouver, Montreal, London, Edinburgh, Dublin Barcelona and Hong Kong.

I got to know this guide because the publisher contacted me to use one of my photo of Kipferl, an Austrian café in Angel. She kindly sent me this cute guide after going on sale. I am writing about this guide, not because my photo is used or I was asked to publicise it (which they never did), but the guide includes many places I mentioned in my blog, such as Albion, Caravan, Lantana, Leila’s Shop, Look Mum No Hands!, J+A Cafe, St Ali, Milk Bar, St John Hotel, Dishoom, and Hackney Pearl – this make me feel very close to the guide. Also its Martha Stewart-like package design and layout with pastel colours is nice, and the price of £4.99 (€7.95/$9.95 in AUS/US/Canada) is quite reasonable. You don’t need to bring an entire guide but only one card in your choice in your wallet – how handy, isn’t it? iPhone and Windows 7 Apps are also available.

Rapha Cycle Club Gallery, Shop and Café @ Clerkenwell Road

最近ロンドンで流行りの（ロンドン東部だけ？）、サイクル・カフェ。先日書いたLook Mum No Hands!から西に歩いて5分ほど行ったところにある、Rapha Cycle Clubもその一つだ。5月8日にオープンし、3ヶ月間だけ営業、7月31日には閉店してしまう。

黒と白でシックにまとめられた広い店内は、カフェ、オリジナルやヴィンテージのサイクル・ウェアやグッズを売るショップ、そしてギャラリーになっている。壁にかかった薄型テレビ2台には、ジロ・デ・イタリアから始まり、ツアー・オブ・カリフォルニア、ツール・ド・スイス、 ツール・ド・フランスと、その時々開催中の自転車レースを放映、ギャラリーでは、イタリア自転車競技界の英雄、ファウスト・コッピ展、ツールマレー峠展、そしてヴィンテージのレース用自転車の展示と、月代わりで3つの企画展が開かれる。その他、映画や音楽のイベントやレース観戦、自転車イベントなども催される（イベント・スケジュールはこちら）。

フードやドリンク類は、コーヒーの味に定評がある、スピタルフィールズにあるNude Espressoが担当。ケーキ類やサンドイッチ等のほか、Raphaのオリジナルブレンドのコーヒーがいただける。テーブルの上のグラスの下に自転車レースのコースの地図を置くなど、至る所に自転車のテイストが感じられるインテリアは、なかなか素敵。

このRapha Cycle ClubのオーナーであるRaphaは、2004年にロンドンに設立、自転車レースがコンセプトの高品質なスポーツウェアとライフスタイル・ブランド「Rapha Performance Roadwear」を展開する。また、歩いて数分程のところにあるGrays Inn Roadにある自転車ショップCondor Cyclesと共同で、サイクル・チームのRapha Condor Sharpを所有、またRouleur Magazineという自転車雑誌も発行している。道理で自転車づくしな訳だ。

自転車や自転車レースに興味のある方、閉店する7月31日までに足を運んでみては？

The concept of ‘cycle café’ is a recent trend in London (or East London only?), and Rapha Cycle Club is one of them. It is just 5 minutes away by walk from Look Mum No Hands!, another popular cycle café. The Rapha Cycle Club is open only three month, from May 8 until July 31, and will be gone afterwards.

The club with black & white chic decor is a combination of gallery, shop that sells original and vintage cycle wears, and café. Two flat screen TVs hanging on the walls show the important road races live, starting with Giro d’Italia, Tour of California, Tour de Suisse and Tour de France. Three exhibitions are planned during the period – the Fausto Coppi exhibition first, the Tourmalet exhibition next, and exhibition of vintage racing bikes at last. The premise also hosts a variety of events including film and music evenings, book and product launches, evening screenings of races, regular group rides (check details on calender of events).

Reputable Nude Espresso in Spitalfields is in charge of food and drinks at the Rapha Cycle Club, such as cakes and sandwiches, along with original Rapha blend coffee.

The owner of the cycle club, Rapha, started in 2004 in London, sells a premium sportswear and lifestyle brand focused on bicycle road cycling clothing and accessories, “Rapha Performance Roadwear”. Rapha also co-owns the UK-based cycling team Rapha Condor Sharp with bike shop Condor Cycles on Grays Inn Road just few minutes away from the club, and publishes a cycle magazine Rouleur Magazine – no wonder why the Rapha Cycle Club is all about bike.

Look Mum No Hands! Cycle Café @ Clerkenwell

長く寒い冬が終わり、ようやく最高気温が20度を超えた近頃、心なしか自転車に乗ってる人が俄に増えたような気がする。

Old StreetとGoswell Roadの交差点の少し東にあるLook Mum No Hands!（「ママ、見て！手放しで自転車に乗れるよ！」という意味だと思う）は、自転車修理ワークショップと駐輪場を備えた Cycle Café（サイクル・カフェ）で、4月にオープンしたばかり。以前に書いたLock 7とともに、Time Out誌のロンドンのベスト・サイクル・カフェの1つに選ばれている。広々としたカフェの中は、自転車やパーツ、ロードレースの写真がそこかしこに飾られ、奥のスクリーンには、5月8日より開催中の自転車レース、ジロ・デ・イタリアが放映されていた。ジロ・デ・イタリアと言えば、2008年のレースはMの母親の家の前を通るコースになっていて、ちょうどその時イタリアにいた私たちは、矢のように通り過ぎていく世界の第一線で活躍する選手たちを目の当たりにし、興奮したことを思い出す。

Look Mum No Hands!は、Old Street、Clerkenwell Road、Theobald’s Roadなどと名前を変えながらセントラルとイースト・ロンドンをつなぐルートに面しているので、通勤途上ちょっと一休みしたいサイクリストたちには打ってつけのロケーション。味に定評のあるSquare Mile CoffeeのコーヒーやSUKI Teaの紅茶の他、ハムや野菜の盛り合わせ、サンドイッチ、ケーキ等の軽食もある。ビールやワイン等のアルコールもあるけれど、飲んだ後に自転車に乗る時は、車の往来が多い道なので、くれぐれもご注意を。

Finally long and cold winter is gone and the maximum temperature have crossed over 20ºc, and I see more cyclists in the city recently. Look Mum No Hands!, just opened in April, is a cycle café/bar with bicycle repair workshop and bike parking in the premise. The café, together with Lock 7, is listed as one of the best cycle café by the Time Out.

This spacious café is filled with bicycles, bike parts, and photos of road races, and was showing Giro’ d’Italia taking place from May 8 when we were there. M’s mum’s house was on the route of 2008 Giro d’Italia. We happened to be there at that time, and we had an honor to watch bullet-speed world class cyclists passing just in front of us – it was my first and only experience to see a cycle race.

Look Mum No Hands! is located on the busy route connecting central and East London and changing its name to Old Street, Clerkenwell Road, Theobald’s Road and so on, and it is a perfect location for cyclists on commute to take a little break. The café serves delicious Square Mile Coffee and SUKI Tea, as well as some light meals and snacks such as sandwiches, cured meats or veggie platters, and pastries and cakes. Beer and wines are also available, but be careful when you hit the road after you have some, as Old Street is a quite busy road with full of cars.
