Lowry and the Painting of Modern Life @ Tate Britain

ここ数ヶ月の間に見た展覧会の中で一番印象に残っている、テートブリテンの「Lowry and the Painting of Modern Life」展のこと、ブログに書こう書こうと思っていて、ふと気付いたらもう10月。今月20日に終わる前にと慌てて筆を取った、もといキーボードに向かった。

イギリス人アーティスト・Laurence Stephen Lowry（ローレンス・スティーブン・ローリー）、略してLS Lowryは、イングランド北部ランカシャー州にある産業の街・Stretford生まれのイギリス人アーティストで、20世紀半ばのイングランド北部の産業地帯を好んで描いたことで知られる。海外ではあまり名は知られていないが、イギリスでは最も人気のある画家の一人だ。19世紀後半のフランスの絵画に影響を受けたローリーは、サッカーの試合やデモ行進、工場へ通勤する人々等、炭坑や工場、テラスハウスと呼ばれる集合住宅を背景に、「matchstick men（マッチ棒のように細長い人間）」と呼ばれる独特の作風で、産業革命で栄えた北部イングランドの労働者階級の人々の日常生活を生き生きと描いた。

ローリーは夜間クラスでパートタイムで絵画を学び、仕事後に作品を描いていた。60代で画家として成功を収めた後も、定年退職するまで事務員としてフルタイムで働いたという。そして、その生涯でKnightの爵位を含む5つのイギリスの栄誉称号を辞退し、イギリスで最も栄誉称号を受け取らなかった人物という記録を持つそうだ。

ローリーの作品からは、今は廃れてしまったけれど、かつては活気に満ちていた産業地帯にコミュニティや人々のバイタリティーやパワーが溢れ出ていて、見ているこちらも何故か元気が出てくる。イチオシの展覧会、終わる前に是非足を運んでみてください。

Although Tate Britain’s “Lowry and the Painting of Modern Life” is one of my favorite exhibitions in recent years, I have been postponing to write about it with no reason, but suddenly I realized that the exhibition is going to end soon on 20th this month (can’t believe it’s already October!) and finally I picked up the pen, no, started to type the keyboard.

Laurence Stephen Lowry, or simply L.S. Lowry is an English artist, born in industrial city of Stretford, Lancashire, and is known for his paintings of the industrial landscapes of the north of England in the mid-20th century. He is not known well abroad, but is one of the most popular painters in UK. Influenced by French painting of the later 19th century, Lowry painted  everyday life of working class people with a style often referred to as “matchstick men”, with background of coalmines, factories and terraced houses, as well as people going football matches and protest marches – typical urban landscapes of North England where once had been flourished during industrial revolution.

Lowry studied painting part-time in evening classes, and later only painted at night after work. He worked full-time for his whole life as a clerk and continued to be chief cashier at the Pall Mall Property Company in Manchester, even after he achieved success as a painter in his 60s.
Interestingly, Lowry rejected five honours during his life, including a knighthood, and holds the record for the most rejected British honours.

From Lowry’s painting, I can feel vitality and power of the people and the community, where now lost past glory after many factories and mines closed down, sadly. Highly recommended, and you shouldn’t miss it.

Looking at the View @ Tate Britain

テート・ブリテンで「Schwitters in Britain」展と「Simon Starling: Phantom Ride」を見た折り、同時開催中の「Looking at the View」展（2月12日〜6月2日）にも立ち寄った。この展覧会のことは見たことも聞いた事もなかったが、これが中々良く、むしろ先の2つより楽しめた。テート・ブリテンの説明によると、これは過去300年の間に50人以上のアーティストによって描かれたテート・コレクション所蔵の風景画約70点を集めたテーマ展で、BP British Art Displaysの一環。ジョゼフ・マロード・ウィリアム・ターナーやTracey Emin（トレイシー・エミン）等の有名どころから、あまり知られていないアーティストまで、これら作品を通じて、時代もバックグラウンドも違うアーティストたち、そして私たち自身の見る光景が、驚くほど似通っているかを見せてくれる。まあ同じ目の構造を持つ人間同志、全く違って見える訳はないとは思うのだが、同じ風景画と言えど、色使いや筆遣いなど作風が異なるアーティスト達の作品を比べるのも面白い。

以下は私の好きな展示作品。

Together with “Schwitters in Britain” and “Simon Starling: Phantom Ride“, we also saw “Looking at the View” (February 12 – June 2) at Tate Britain. I’ve never heard or read about this exhibition, but I enjoyed more than other two. According to the museum, this is the thematic exhibition displaying over 70 works by more than 50 artists over the last 300 years, revealing how artists and ourselves look at the landscape in greatly similar ways – whether near or afar, high or low, from inside or out. The show consists entirely of works from the Tate collection, from famous artists such as J.M.W. Turner and Tracey Emin to lesser-known figures, and is part of the BP British Art Displays. We all human being with the same kind of eyes won’t see completely different, but it is interesting to see how different each artist executes in a different way with diverse colours and brush strokes.

Here are my favorite paintings in the show.

Patrick Caulfield「After Lunch（1975）」私の好きなアーティスト、Michael Craig-Martinや Julian Opie（下作品）と似たスタイルの作品。シンプルなラインドローイングに鮮やかな青が印象的。

ジュリアン・オピーの「There are hills in the distance (c)（1996）」。イギリスのバンド・Blur（ブラー）の「The Best Of」のアルバムカバーに代表される、コンピュータで描かれた人物画が有名だけれど、彼の描く超シンプルな風景画もいい。→バービカンのオピーのデジタルインスタレーション：過去ブログ

Julian Opie “There are hills in the distance (c)” (1996). He is known for his graphic portraits such as in the album cover for British pop band Blur‘s “The Best Of“, but I also like his ultra-minimalistic landscape paintings. →See Opie’s installation at Barbican on my past post.

LS Lowryの「Hillside in Wales (1962)」。6月26日よりテート・ブリテンで、彼の大規模展「Lowry and the Painting of Modern Life」が始まる予定。

ヴォルフガング・ティルマンスの「Concorde Grid (1997)」。今はなきコンコルドを違ったアングルで捉えたシリーズは興味深いが、背景色は黄色より白の方がいいと思う。

ギルバート&ジョージの「The Nature of Our Looking (1970)」。彼らの特徴である、写真を元にした鮮やかな色彩の作品と異なる、言わば地味目の作品。
