Coco Momo Café Bar & Brasserie Holborn @ Theobalds Road

ロンドン西部のグロースター・ロードとメリルボーン・ハイストリートに2軒あるカフェ/バー/ブラッセリー・Coco Momoが今月、ホルボーンのTheobalds Road（セオバルズ・ロード）にもオープンした。広々とした店内は、パリのカフェにありそうなテーブルと椅子、壁には20年代風のランプ、そして白シャツに黒ベスト、ネクタイとギャルソンのようないでたちのウェイターたちと、クラシックなフランス風。ありきたりなインテリアの入口側より、白タイルとレンガの壁、天井に吊り下げられたシャンデリアと大きな時計、そしてびっしりと本が並んだ棚が置かれた奥の方が雰囲気がある。

朝8時のオープンから夜11時までいつでも食事できるので、時間を気にせず行けるのが嬉しい。フード類は、朝食はクロワッサンやトースト、卵料理、パンケーキなど。ランチはハンバーガーやサンドイッチなどカジュアルなものから、前菜、スープ、メインと、ちゃんとした食事も出来る。ディナーは、メインでも大体£15以下、まさしく、気軽に食べられるビストロかブラッスリーのようだ。5時まではランチセット（2コース£6）、5時から8時までのプリフィクス（2コース£12）と、懐に優しいメニューもある。

この日は、炭火焼チキンとアボカドのサンドイッチ（£7.50）と炭火焼チーズバーガー（£9.95）を注文。サンドイッチは、チキンが少しドライだったけれど、トーストされたパンは美味しいし材料も新鮮。ハンバーガーも、ジューシーに焼きあがったパテととろりと溶けたチーズが上手く絡み合い、なかなかいける。他の2店のウェブサイトでの評判は平均点が多いけど、1回しか行ったことがないし、是非お薦め！と言うほどではないけど、気軽に食事する場所として、悪くないと思う。

Café bar & brasserie Coco Momo opened its third branch on Theobalds Road in Holborn in this month, in addition to Gloucester Road and Marylebone High Street in the west. Classic café tables and chairs, 20’s style wall lumps and staffs in ‘garçons’ style with white shirt, vest and tie, make the café look like a French bistrot somewhere in Paris. The seating area on the street side is ordinary and a bit boring, but the back area is chic, with a chandelier, big hanging clock and large shelves filled with books, as well as white tiles and exposed brick walls.

Coco momo opens from 8am to 11pm, and it is great that food is available all day. Croissants, toasts, eggs, pancakes are available for breakfast till 11:30am. Lunch menu includes casual dishes like sandwiches and hamburgers, as well as proper meals with appetizers, salads, soups and mains. Most of the main dishes costs no more than £15 during dinner time, and it is quite reasonable and truly like a French bistrot or brasserie. The restaurant even offers bargain 2-course set menus for £6 (lunch) / £12 (prix fixe from 5 – 8pm).

Today we ordered Chargrilled chicken & avocado with rocket pesto (£7.50) and Classic chargrilled burger with cheddar cheese (£9.95). Although the chicken was a bit dry but the toasted bread was tasty and the ingredients were fresh. Nicely grilled burger had a perfect harmony with beautifully melted cheese. Reviews of other two branches on the internet is just average, but I thought the Holborn branch was not bad at all for a everyday use, though it doesn’t have michelin-star quality.

Daunt Books @ Marylebone High Street

来週からの旅行に先立ち、以前に書いたコベント・ガーデンのStanfordsと、メリルボーン・ハイ・ストリートにあるDaunt Booksにガイドブックを見に行った。ロンドンで旅行ガイドや地図を探すなら、Daunt BooksとStanfordsの2店がお薦め。

Daunt Booksは、メリルボーン・ハイ・ストリートに本店を置く本屋で、チェルシーやHampstead（ハムステッド）、Holland Park（ホーランド・パーク）、Belsize Park（べルサイズ・パーク）のロンドンの高級住宅地4カ所と、シティに支店がある。小説や児童書など普通の本も売っているけれど、何より、ガイドブックや紀行本、写真集から、歴史、フィクション＆ノンフィクション、レシピや食べ物ガイドまで、その国に関するありとあらゆる本が、国別にずらっと並んでいるのが、Daunt Booksの特徴。平凡な入口からは想像できないけれど、樫の木で作られた長い本棚が並び、ウィリアム・モリスの壁紙で飾られた、エドワード朝様式のクラシックな店の奥には、天窓がついた、明るくて広々とした売り場が広がる（写真2）。この1階と、古い図書館のような趣の地下の売り場（写真3）が、世界各国に関する本で埋め尽くされている。

We went to Daunt Books on Marylebone High Street to look for a guidebook for our trip from next week, as well as Stanfords in Covent Garden that I wrote in the past. If you look for a travel guide or a map, Daunt Books and Stanfords are the places to check in London.

Daunt Books is a bookshop based in Marylebone High Street, with four branches in wealthy neighborhood  of Chelsea, Holland Park, Hampstead and Belsize Park and one in the City. Although selling also usual books such as novels and children’s books, Daunt Books specialises in travel books,using a unique system which arranges the books by country. You can find any book related to a specific country on the same book shelves, from the guide books and travel writings to history, fiction & non-fiction, photography, and recipes and food guides. It is hard to imagine from its average-looking entrance, but on the back of its classic Edwardian shop with long oak galleries and William Morris prints, there is an airy space with an abundance of natural light through skylights (the second photo), as well as more library-looking downstair (the third photo), dedicated for the books perfect for your vacation in any part of the world.

Nordic Bakery Marylebone @ New Cavendish Street

以前書いたNordic Bakeryの2号店が、Marylebone（メリルボーン）にできた。場所は、メインストリートであるMarylebone High Streetから少し離れたNew Cavendish Street沿いにある。ソーホー店より、もっとストイックでミニマリズム、長テーブルが4台あるだけの、すっきりした超北欧風インテリア。一週間ぐらい前にオープンしただけあって、すべてが新しくてきれい。メインストリートから少し離れているせいか、まだ開店したばかりのせいか、まだ客も少なく、メリルボーンあたりでゆっくりお茶したい時にお薦め。

The second branch of popular Nordic Bakery just opened in Merylebone. It is located on New Cavendish Street, a bit away from the busy Marylebone High Street. There are only four long tables in a spacious café, and it is super minimalist, clean & neat, and ultra Scandinavian, even in compare to Soho branch. Everything is new and clean, as it just opened about a week ago. Maybe because it is not on the high street or because it just opened, there were not many customers there, so now is the perfect time to visit the café and relax when you are around Marylebone.

Natural Kitchen @ New Fetter Lane

Marylebone High StreetにあるNatural Kitchenが、最近シティにもオープンした。セントラル線・チャンセリー・レーン駅から徒歩約5分、New Fetter Laneに新しく出来たオフィス・商業施設、New Street Squareにある。フレンチ・カントリー・スタイルでまとめられた広い店内は、カフェ・エリア（写真上）とレストラン・エリア（写真下）に分かれており、場所柄、スーツ姿のビジネスマン・ウーマンの客が多い。時間帯によってメニューは変わるが、朝食、メイン、タパス、サラダ、ブランチ、サンドイッチ、パン・おつまみ類、ホームメイド・ケーキ等と盛りだくさん。仕事帰りに一杯という人のために、アルコール類も充実している。通常のパブやレストランはランチと夕食の間は食べ物を頼めないし、カフェは夕方で閉まってしまうので、いつでも食事ができ、お酒類もいただけるNatural Kitchenは使える場所だ。毎日レストランのキッチンで作られる食べ物類はフレッシュ。今日頼んだチキンパイ＋クスクス・サラダも美味しかったが、コーヒーの味が今イチだったのが残念。

Popular Marylebone High Street restaurant/cafe, Natural Kitchen recently opened its new branch in the City in New Street Square off New Fetter Lane (about 5 min walk from Central line Chancery Lane station). This spacious restaurant, decorated in French country style, is divided between café and restaurant areas. Since it is located on the new office/store complex New Street Square, the main customers are business men + women in suits. The menu varies depending on the time – Natural Kitchen serves breakfast, mains, brunch, Tapas, salads, sandwiches, bread&snacks, and home made cakes – basically anything you expect in British cafes + something Continental. A large alcohol menu is available for people who want a glass of drink (or possibly more) after work. The natural Kitchen is pretty convenient place as it serves food & drinks all day – normally you cannot order food at pubs and restaurants in between lunch and dinner time, and cafes closed at evening. Their meals are freshly prepared daily in their kitchens, and the chicken pie + cous cous salad we ordered today was yummy. The only problem was the expresso – a bit too watery and weak.
