4月2日より、V&A（ヴィクトリア＆アルバート博物館）で「The Cult of Beauty: The Aesthetic Movement 1860-1900（美の礼賛：耽美主義運動 1860～1900年」展が始まった（〜7月17日）。

展覧会は、イギリスで1860年から1890年頃に花開いた、アートやデザインにおける耽美主義の発展を、「The search for new beauty 1860s（新しい美の模索）」「Art for Art’s Sake 1870s-1880s（芸術のためのアート）」「Beautiful people and Aesthetic houses 1870s-1880s（美しい人々と美的住宅）」「Late-flowering beauty 1880s-1890s（後期に花開いた美）」の4部に分け、時系列で展示。オスカー・ワイルド、ウィリアム・モリス、ジェームズ・マクニール・ホイッスラー、ダンテ・ゲイブリエル・ロセッティ、エドワード・バーン＝ジョーンズ、フレデリック・レイトンなど、当時一世を風靡した芸術家たちの絵画、印刷物、ドローイングをはじめ、インテリア・デザインや肖像画、写真、衣装、宝石等の装飾美術など、多岐に渡る250点以上もの作品が一堂に会する。孔雀や花のモチーフで彩られた展示室の壁や美しいクラシック書体を使ったタイトルデザインなど、ヴィクトリア＆アルバート博物館らしい絢爛豪華な展示デザインも必見。

大英帝国絶頂期で、産業革命による経済発展を享受したヴィクトリア朝時代は、上流階級のものであった芸術が新興の中流階級にも普及。それまでの文化観念や道徳観の変化を反映した、イギリス芸術の黄金期だった。パリにおけるアバンギャルドに刺激されて興ったイギリス耽美主義は、醜いものや物質主義からの解放を目指し、新しい美の形として「Art for Art’s Sake（芸術のための芸術）」を標榜、純粋に美しいものだけを追い求めた。ロセッティやウィスラーなどによる女性画は、ビクトリア時代に理想とされた控えめな美と対照的に、必ずしも美しいとは言えない女性たちをモデルに、自由奔放な新しい美を描いている。古代ギリシャや中国や日本などの影響を受けた、エキゾチシズム漂うインテリアやデザインは、時に過剰とも思えるけれど、人は「美しい生活」を送るべきだと、デザインを日常生活にまで浸透させた功績は大きい。これらの作品は、今の時代においては目新しさは全くないけれど、全く違った芸術感、価値観を提起した耽美主義に、当時の人々が熱狂したのが分かる気がする。

V&A‘s new exhibition, “The Cult of Beauty: The Aesthetic Movement 1860-1900” started from April 2, till July 17.

The exhibition is devided in four chronological sections, charting the development of the Aesthetic Movement in art and design: “The search for new beauty 1860s,” “Art for Art’s Sake 1870s-1880s,” “Beautiful people and Aesthetic houses 1870s-1880s” and “Late-flowering beauty 1880s-1890s.” As well as paintings, prints and drawings, the show includes over 250 examples of all the ‘artistic’ decorative arts, together with designs and photographs, portraits, fashionable dress and jewellery, created by star artists of the movement such as Oscar Wilde, James McNeill Whistler, Dante Gabriel Rossetti, Edward Burne-Jones, Frederic Leighton, and William Morris. Another thing worth seeing is the V&A’s gorgeous exhibition design with peacock and flower motifs and beautiful classic typefaces on the walls of the exhibition rooms, in perfect harmony with the collection.

Victorian era was the period when British people enjoyed prosperity from industrial revolution and the height of British Empire. It was also the golden age of the British art, which became available to emerging middle class, not only for aristocracy. Inspired by Avant-garde in Paris with the desire to escape the ugliness and materialism of the age, Aestheticism pursued the new kind of art , freed from outworn cultural ideas and moral codes. The movement believed in ‘Art for Art’s Sake’ – art had to just look beautiful. Painters like Rossetti and Whistler used models who were not necessarily beautiful or at odds with Victorial ideals of reserved femininity, and created new and unconventional types of female beauty. The exotic design of furniture and decorative arts influenced by ancient Greek, China and Japan are often considered too much, but introducing design into everyday life with the concept that “people should live beautiful life” was the pioneer of modern design, and we owe them for that. All the collection doesn’t make much sense in the 21st century, but I understand why people of that time were so excited by the Aesthetic movement which brought them a completely new values in art and design.

イギリスに長く住んでいるのに、映画好きなのに、よく考えてみたらイギリス映画はあんまり見ていない。私にとって、イギリス映画と言えば、シェイクスピアや王室関係などの歴史もの、ジェームズ・ボンドシリーズ、ハリー・ポッター、そしてフル・モンティやトレインスポッティングなどの労働者階級もの、そしてブリジット・ジョーンズの日記やノッティングヒルの恋人といったラブコメで、これらのジャンルにはあんまり興味がない。一般的に、イギリス映画は印象が薄いというか、インパクトに欠け、何故かそそられない。それにフランス映画のように、人間関係の描写が上手くもない。その中で最近、イギリス人映画評論家たちが口を揃えて絶賛したアートハウス系イギリス映画「Archipelago（群島）」を、期待満々で見に行った。あらすじとしては、

息子のエドワードがアフリカにボランティアに行く前に、想い出に家族旅行をしようと、母パトリシアはシリー諸島に別荘を借りた。母と姉のシンシアが先に到着。エドワードも少し遅れてやってきた。シンシアは何故かいつも不機嫌で情緒不安定。エドワードは、自分のしようとしている事に意味があるのか悩む。父親は、待てど暮らせど言い訳ばかりで来ず、状態をもてあます母親はついにプッチン。料理係として雇われたローズと、母とシンシアに絵画を教えるクリストファーが緩衝役になるも、時間が経つにつれ、家族内の緊張は高まっていく。

と言う話だが、何か起こりそうで何も起こらない。ストーリーラインも特にない。シンシアのいらいらは意味不明だし、エドワードは理想主義でナイーブな、典型的なお坊っちゃま。母は言いたいこともはっきり言えず、鬱屈するのみ。そして彼らの会話の空虚でつまらない事といったら！イギリスのミドルクラス（日本で言う中流よりもステイタスが上の感じ）のお方々は、こんなに気取った退屈な会話をするのか。上映約2時間の間ムカムカし、気持ちの良い眠りにさえつけなかった。私だけがこの「高尚な」会話を理解できないのかと思っていたら、何人かが途中で席を立ったまま帰ってこなかった。

「A car-crash compelling, painfully comic distillation of modern British middle class mores（交通事故のように注目せずにいられない、現代のイギリスのミドルクラスを痛々しいほど滑稽に凝縮）」「subtle film of sensed absences（感じさせる不在を扱う巧みな映画）」「sad, funny, wise film（悲しくて可笑しい、賢明な映画）」等々、いつもは辛口の評論家たちが大げさな好評価を与える理由が全く分からない。思うに、自身もミドルクラスである評論家たちだから理解できる、ミドルクラスによるミドルクラスのための映画で、内輪でしか共感できないんだろう。

ただ、映像はとても綺麗で、島の風景も素晴らしい。家族の会話は全部カットして、島の観光用CMとして利用するのにはいいかもしれない。

We are movie fans and have been living in UK for a while, but rarely see British movies. British movies I come up with are period movies such as of Shakespeare and the Royal family, James Bond series, Harry Potter, and movies talking about working class like the Full Monty and Trainspotting, as well as rom-com Bridget Jones’s Diary and Notting Hill – those subject matters are not really my cup of tea. In general, British movies are colorless and don’t have a ‘punch’ to grab our attention. Also they are not good at portraying relationship as French or American do. We recently saw “Archipelago“, an art house movie that all the British movie critiques love (which is quite rare), with full of expectation.

The summary is like this (excerpt from Wikipedia):

A darkly comic and quietly moving portrayal of a family in emotional crisis. Before Edward leaves to do voluntary work in Africa, his mother Patricia gathers the family together on a remote island of Scilly as a farewell trip to say goodbye to Edward. His sister Cynthia doesn’t seem to want to be there, and although hired cook Rose and painting teacher Christopher are brought in to help, they only serve to bring the family’s anxieties to the surface. Grouped together on the island, and with their father’s absence becoming increasingly conspicous, the tensions and resentments within the family are drawn into sharper and sharper focus as the holiday progresses.

Basically, nothing happens and there is no story line in this movie. I have no clue why Cynthia is so grumpy, and Edward is a typical idealistic naive boy from a good family with no sense of true reality. Their mother is so hopeless to deal with the situation alone, and burst out to her absent husband, who always makes excuses not to come. The most irritating thing in the movie is their boring and nonsense superficial conversation! I was so annoyed and couldn’t even fall a sleep. Do British middle class people all talk like that?! I hope not. I thought it’s only me who don’t enjoy these ‘sophisticated’ conversation, but some of the audiences left the cinema in the middle, so I am not the only one!

“A car-crash compelling, painfully comic distillation of modern British middle class mores” “subtle film of sensed absences” “sad, funny, wise film” etc, etc – I just can’t comprehend why normally strict film critiques all applaud the movie. I assume, “Archipelago” is the movie by British middle class and for British middle class. That’s why British film critiques who are middle class themselves can empathize with the movie. Not for everyone else…

But cinematography is beautiful and intriguingly atmospheric. Perfect for TV commercial of Isles of Scilly tourism – without all the family talks but the images of astonishing nature.

Rise of Posh Pop and Rock Musicians

今日のタイムズ紙で面白い記事を読んだ。歴史的に上流社会への反抗とされ、1960年代から90年代には労働者階級出身者に独占されていたポップやロック界に、良家の子女たちが増えてきているのだそうだ。ポップやロック・スターになることは、かつて貧しい少年少女たちの夢と希望であり、すでに人生の選択肢がたくさんある良家の子息たちにとっては、ミュージシャンになる事は、恥だとされていた。だからかつて、裕福な家庭に育ったミュージシャンたちは、自分の経歴を隠そうとしていた。でも時代は変わった。

この記事は、良家の子女が現在、ポップやロック界に幅を利かせつつある理由をいくつか挙げている。一つは、育ちの良い彼らはマナーがよく丁寧で好ましく、世界最大の音楽市場で、才能や態度と同時にマナーの良さが重要であるアメリカ進出に役立つから。だから、「バッド・ボーイ」的イメージの労働者階級出身の人気バンド、Oasis（オアシス）やArctic Monkeys（アークティック・モンキーズ）はアメリカで成功できなかった、と結論づけている。また良家の子女が通うパブリック・スクール（私立学校）は、勤勉をモットーとし、これもまた、勤勉さが尊重されるアメリカでの成功に役立つと言う。エリート教育によって培われる自信も、ステージに立つ上で重要だ。

その他の理由としては、パブリック・スクールの設備の良さ、また新入生が合唱テストを受けさせるなど音楽的伝統を挙げる。そして昔のパブリック・スクールの先生は、ロック音楽なぞ子供のお遊びだとバカにしていたけれど、自身がポップや音楽を聴いて育った若手の先生は、キャリアの選択肢の一つとして、生徒に音楽の道を目指す事もむしろ奨励する。

中・上流階級が支持する保守党が先の選挙で勝ち、イートン校・オックスフォード大学出身の「ええとこのぼんぼん」、デーヴィッド・キャメロンが首相となり、いまだ階級社会の影響で、割合にしてたった7％程度のパブリック・スクール卒業生が弁護士、医者、ジャーナリスト、CEOなど、エリートと言われる職業の過半数を占める中（参考サイト）、音楽まで良家の子女に独占されるとなると、貧しい家庭出身の子供たちは、どこに将来の希望を見いだしたらいいんだろう？

I read an interesting article on today’s the Times – there are more musicians and singers from posh families emerging in Pop and Rock music industry. Rock has been historically resistant to the upper classes, and during 1960s and the 1990s when working-class pop stars dominated hit charts, rock and pop stars were the dream and hope of the poor boys and girls, while it was disdain and derision for the privileged kids who already has many options in their futures. Therefore, pop stars from good families once tried to hide their background. But now the time has changed.

The article mentions several reasons for a rise of posh pop stars. One of the reasons is that posh kids are brought up with good manners to make through the stardom: they are polite, friendly, likeable, and this help them become popular also in the world-biggest music market America, where good manners are judges as well as talent and attitude. That’s the reason why Oasis and Arctic Monkeys, top working-class stars with a bad-boy attitude, couldn’t succeed big in the USA, according to the article. Public schools‘ value in strong work ethic is another key to success in America, where hard working is very important. Confidence that public schools students internalize through the elitist education is crucial factor for success on stage.

Another reason is that public schools have great facilities, and there is a tradition that new boys have choral tests. Old public school teachers once considered rock music as silly and childish folly, but younger teachers who grew up with rock and pop music now see it as one of the valid career option and encourage students to go for music.

Now Tory, traditionally supported by middle/upper class, won the last election and Etonian and Oxford grad elite David Cameron became a prime minister. Public School graduates, about only 7% of the population, occupy over 50% of prestigious jobs such as lawyers, medics, journalists and CEOs (reference site) , and the result still shows UK is still strong class society. If the posh kids even monopoly music industry, where poor kids can find their goals and dreams?

World Cup Football Fans VS Royal Ascot Attendees

サッカーファンがワールドカップで盛り上がる中、中・上流階級のお方々が熱狂するのが、昨日15日から始まったRoyal Ascot（ロイヤル・アスコット）。バークシャーにあるアスコット競馬場でイギリス王室が主催する、1711年から続く歴史ある競馬レースで、The Royal Meeting（ロイヤル・ミーティング）とも呼ばれる。世界で最も有名な競馬レースの一つで、毎年30万人以上がロイヤル・アスコット・ウィークに訪れる。ウィンザー城に程近く、5日間の会期中、エリザベス女王や王室メンバーが城から馬車でレース観戦にいらっしゃる（噂によると女王は競馬が非常にお好きだそうだ）。

このレースがイギリス社交界のメインイベントで、毎年メディアがレース自体よりも注目するのが、観戦する王室メンバーや有名人たち、そして観戦者たちのファッション。王室関連の伝統あるレースだけあって、ドレスコード（服装規定）があり、Grandstandと呼ばれる高級席では、男性は正装が求められる。きちんとしたシャツとネクタイは必須、スーツやジャケットがあればなお可。気合いの入った英国紳士たちは黒またはグレーのモーニングにベストとシルクハットできめている。スポーツ着やジーンズ、短パンは厳禁。女性はスマートな装いに、強制ではないけれども帽子があればなお良い。特に木曜日のレディースデー（Ladies Day）では、色とりどりに華やかに着飾った女性たちが、こぞってユニークで変わったデザインの帽子を披露する（写真はこちらから：Daily Mail／The Guardian）。

While foootball fans are crazy about the England games during this World Cup, another group of people are fascinated by Royal Ascot, started yesterday on June 15. Also known as the Royal Meeting, Royal Ascot is one of the world’s most famous race meetings dating back to 1711, and is held at the Ascot Racecourse in Ascot, Berkshire. Every year over 300,000 people visit to the racecourse during Royal Ascot week. It is only six miles from Windsor Castle, and Queen Elizabeth II and various members of the British Royal Family attend the race, arriving each day in a horse-drawn carriage (it is known that the Queen loves a horse race).

It is a major event in the British social calendar, and usually press coverage of the celebs and rich and famous attendees and their fashions exceed actual racing. Dress code of this prestigious races sounds a bit old fashioned. ‘Gentlemen’ in the more expensive Grandstand Admission area must wear a shirt and tie, preferably with a suit or jacket. Sports attire, jeans and shorts are strictly forbidden. True British gentlemen wear more formal, a black or grey morning dress with top hat. ‘Ladies’ are required to dress in a manner appropriate to a smart occasion, and many wear hats although this is not compulsory. Especially on Ladies Day usually held on Thursdays, smartly dressed women compete each other with their unique, or eccentric sometimes, hats with all sorts of design and colors (see more photos: Daily Mail / The Guardian）

同じ時期に開催中といえど、ワールドカップのイングランド・ファンたちとは、まるで別世界。イギリスでは、一般的に、サッカーは労働者階級、ラグビーやクリケットが中・上流階級のスポーツとされているけれど、2つのイベントの写真が共にスポーツ欄を埋め尽くすあたり、イギリスの階級社会がまだ明らかに存在していることを感じさせる。

Though happening at the same time, Royal Ascot is totally different planet from Word Cup 2010. Generally football (soccer) is considered as a sport for working class, while rugby and cricket are for middle class and upper class. These two completely different worlds covering sports section of the news make me realize that UK is still a firm class society at large.

A Lizard In A Woman’s Skin / She, A Chinese @ ICA cinema

最近、ICAで、ロンドンを舞台にした2つの映画を観た。一つ目はイタリアン・ホラー／スプラッター映画（ジャッロ）の巨匠、ルーチョ・フルチ監督の「A Lizard In A Woman’s Skin（Una Lucertola con la Pelle di Donna／幻想殺人、1971年）」。ロンドンの上流階級の政治家の娘、キャロル・ハモンドは、サイコセラピストに、毎夜、隣に住む奔放な生活を送る美女との情事に溺れる悪夢を見てしまうことを相談している。ある日、夢でキャロルはその情事の相手を殺してしまうが、現実でも彼女が夢見た通りの殺人が起こった。彼女は本当に殺人を犯したのか、それとも不貞を働く夫にはめられたのか？ヒッピー・ムーブメントやカウンターカルチャーが花開いた1960年代のロンドンを舞台に、謎は深まっていく。斬新で、幻想的なフィルミングもいいけれど、裸満載で妙にエロティックなのは、あの時代特有なものなのか、それともイタリアっぽいのか？サスペンス映画としての評価はもとより、イタリア人から見た、ステレオタイプ的なイギリス観が面白い。豪奢なロンドンのマンションや田舎の広大なお屋敷など上流階級の生活と、その両極端にあって、いつもラリっていて怪しいヒッピーたち。警察官以外は普通の人は出てこない。

もう一つは「She, a Chinese（彼女、中国人）」。中国映画かと思いきや、中国人女性で作家のXiaolu Guo（郭小櫓）が監督、UK Film Council（イギリス映画振興のための政府機関）やFilm 4（チャンネル4系の映画専門局）などが制作した、イギリス／ドイツ／フランス合作映画なのだが、私的には近年見た中で最悪の映画だった。中国の片田舎で退屈な生活を送っていた女の子メイが、目的も希望もなく故郷を飛び出し、その都度手近にいる男にしなだれかかって、彼らに寄生しながら、したたかに生きていくというストーリー。まずは地方の大都市・重慶、そして色々あってロンドンにたどり着いた後、定年退職したイギリス人の老人と結婚。でもその生活からもすぐに逃げ出し、近所で小さなインド料理店をやっているムスリム系インド人の家に転がり込むが、最後には妊娠、男にも捨てられるという、脳みその軽くてナイーブな若い女の話。彼女に関わる男性たちも、彼女を性的対象として見るだけで、一様に冷酷でひどい奴ばかり。まあ、それに値する女なのだけど。人物描写も背景描写も、全てにおいて薄っぺらで、彼女の行動に意味はなく、ただ感情の赴くままに生きている。しかも、情夫が貯めていたお金でロンドンに団体旅行で来て、そこから逃げ出し、イギリスに住み着くという設定もかなり怪しい。彼女のように田舎から出てきて売春婦をしていた女性が、厳格な中国において、イギリスビザやパスポートを取れるのか？？そんなに簡単なら、生命のリスクを冒してマフィアに大金を払い、密入国しなくてはならない不法移民たちがいるのは何故か。第62回ロカルノ映画祭の金豹賞を受賞したとのことだが、か細くて可愛い東洋人が、人生を迷いながらも強く生きていくという、アジア人好きの西洋人男性にウケそう。しかも映画には、彼女の顔のクローズアップと可愛い仕草、そしてセックスシーンで溢れている。異文化好きのTime Out誌は4つ星評価だけれど、私はTimes紙の1つ星に1票！

ともあれ、最初に結婚した、定年退職したイギリス人の老人の退屈な典型的中流階級のイギリス生活、そんな夫との退屈な生活が嫌で転がり込んだ、ムスリム系インド人の住む、移民の多いエリアのイーストエンドと、「幻想殺人」の舞台とはまた違ったロンドンが垣間見れる。英語もろくに喋れない彼女の限られた生活範囲内の、現代ロンドンのごく一部の狭い世界ではあるけれど。

Recently I saw two movies filmed in London at ICA. The first one is “A Lizard In A Woman’s Skin (Una Lucertola con la Pelle di Donna, 1971)”, directed by Lucio Fulci, known for his splatter and Italian giallo movies. The film follows the daughter of a prominent British politician, Carol Hammond (Florinda Bolkan), who experiences a series of recurring ‘nightmares’ in which she has an affair with a bisexual nympho who lives downstairs and conducts all-night LSD orgies. In the dream she kills her neighbor. Did she actually commit the murder she dreamt about, or is she being framed by her unfaithful husband? The murder mystery takes place in swinging late-1960’s London. Its innovative and surreal filming is quite original and intriguing. The movie is full of nudity and eroticism – is it of the time when hippie and counter culture was flourished, or is it an Italian thing? Anyway, more than anything, it is interesting to see stereotypical London and British people through Italian eyes – you can see two extremes of UK society at the period; upper class lifestyle with gorgeous apartment in London and vast estate in the countryside and drug-ridden grungy hippie culture.

Another one is “She, a Chinese” – I thought the movie is from China, but it is a UK/Germany/France movie, written and directed by Chinese woman Xiaolu Guo and produced by UK Film Council and Film 4. I must say that it is one of the worst movie I have seen in years. This is the story of Mei, a young village woman who leads a boring life in rural China. Unfulfilled, she leaves for the big city Chongqing, and then heads out for London. She marries to a retired British math teacher, but soon gets frustrated, and leaves him for a younger Muslim Indian who has an takeaway curry shop nearby. At the end, she gets pregnant and is dumped by him. Mei is young and naive and has no goal in her life. What she cares is a man and she always leans on any man around her to cling to for living and fulfillment. Also men whom she has a relationship with are all worst kind who just see her as a sex object – maybe she deserves to that kind of men anyway. The story is quite shallow and offers me nothing but nuisance. At the end, I am like, “so what?!” Some details are unrealistic as well – how come the girl like Mei, a prostitute, can join a sightseeing tour which are exclusively for rich Chinese and people connect to the leading Communist party, getting British visa and Chinese passport so easily (Chinese government has a strict policy for issuing a passport and doesn’t give it to everyone), and just run away from the tour and decides to live in UK? If it’s so easy, no one would pay a lot of money to Snakehead, risking their life to smuggle themselves into UK in a hidden space in a truck or a small compartment of a cargo ship for months. This movie won the Golden Leopard award at Locarno International Film Festival – I understand that some Western men love the movie like “She, a Chinese,” a story of cute oriental girl who is lost in her life but struggling to find a meaning of life, or some kind of craps. This movie is all about her – her face, her body, and her sex scenes – a perfect movie for Asiaphilia men. Ethnic-loving Time Out gave this movie 4 stars, but I give two thumbs up for the Timess’ 1 star review!

Anyways, you can see different sides of London portrayed in “She, a Chinese,” from “A Lizard In a Woman’s Skin” – a typical life of British middle class retiree, and London’s East End where many south-Asian immigrants live – though it is only a small part of modern London as Mei, who barely speaks English, stays in very restricted area and never goes out from the small bubble.
