Mira Schendel @ Tate Modern

テートモダンで開催中のMira Schendel展（9月25日〜2014年1月19日）は、20世紀のブラジルアート界における最も重要なアーティストの一人で、ヨーロッパのモダニズムをブラジルで再構築した、Mira Schendel（ミラ・シェンデル）の回顧展。1950年代の初期の作品から1987年の最期のシリーズ作品まで、250以上の絵画、ドローイング、彫刻作品が集められている。

1919年にチューリッヒでユダヤ系の両親の元に生まれたシェンデルは、イタリアでカトリック教徒として育てられた。この経験が、後のアート制作における精神的かつ哲学的アプローチに繋がっている。1938年、イタリアでユダヤ人を排斥する法律が成立したことに伴い、イタリア国籍を剥奪され、大学を去ることになったシェンデルは、ユーゴスラビアを経て1949年にブラジルに移住、アーティストとしてのスタートを切る。またインテリのグループに参加、哲学者や精神科医等と交流することによって、美的感覚や哲学についての関心を深めた。初期の頃は、生活のためにグラフィックデザイナーとして働き、本の表紙やポスター、イラストレーション等も手がけている。

シェンデルは多作で多面性を持つアーティストとして知られる。独学で、ジョルジョ・モランディやジョルジョ・デ・キリコ、パウル・クレーなどの作品から静物画、非対称性、建築的構成を学び、彼女の作品には、レトリスムやカラーフィールド・ペインティング、ミニマル・アート、コンセプチュアル・アートの要素が見られ、ブラジルのアバンギャルドに衝撃を与えたConcrete art（具体芸術）やNeo-concre art（新具体芸術）運動に貢献したが、特定のアートムーブメントには属さなかった。生涯、ブラジルやヨーロッパの詩人や哲学者、神学者たちと交流を続け、宗教や哲学の問題や、物質的・文化的・言語学的置換を作品の重要なテーマとした。また、東洋の宇宙観や中国の水墨画からも影響を受け、水墨画風の作品も制作している。

言葉やイメージの組み合わせ、空間や時間を象徴するらせん形のモチーフ、半透明のライスペーパーの使用などに代表されるシェンデルの作品は、繊細で静謐、そして奥が深い。ブラジル以外ではあまり知られていないのが意外だ。

Mira Schendel exhibition at Tate Modern (Sep 25 – Jan 19, 2014) is a major retrospective of one of the most significant and influential Brazilian artists of the 20th century, Mira Schendel, who reinvented European Modernism in Brazil. The show features more than 250 paintings, drawings and sculptures, from her early paintings during the 1950s to her last series in 1987.

Schendel was born in Zurich in 1919 to parents of Jewish heritage, but grew up in Italy as a Catholic, and this experience contributed to her profoundly spiritual and philosophical approach to her art making. In 1938, she was stripped of her Italian nationality and forced to leave university when anti-Semitic laws were introduced in Italy. After fleeing to Yugosalvia and then Brazil in 1949, she began her career as an artist. She joined an intellectual circle and there explored ideas concerning aesthetics and philosophy. She also worked as a graphic designer, producing book covers, posters and illustrations to make a living at her early career.

Schendel was a prolific and complex artist. Largely self taught, she drew inspiration for her still-lifes, interiors and asymmetrical, architectonic compositions from artists such as Giorgio Morandi, Giorgio de Chirico and Paul Klee. Her works contain elements of Lettrism, Color Field painting, Minimalism and early Conceptual art, but she was never associated with a single movement while having contributed to the Concrete art and Neo-concre art movements that stormed the Brazilian avant-garde. In life, Schendel was an keen reader and continued correspondence with poets, philosophers and theologians throughout Brazil and Europe, and as a result, physical, cultural and linguistic displacement are key themes in her work, together with issues of religion and philosophy. She was also influenced by Far Eastern cosmovision and created works inspired by Chinese painting.

Schendel’s work, characterized by such as combining word and image, using spiral motifs which signify an image and an investigation of space and time, or applying on semi-transparent rice papers, and is rather quiet and delicate yet profound. It is surprising that she is little known outside Brazil!

“Joan of Arc: Voices of Light” by London Symphony Orchestra @ Barbican Centre

先日日曜日、バービカン・センターで行われた、London Symphony Orchestra（LSO：ロンドン交響楽団）のコンサート「Joan of Arc: Voices of Light」を観に行った。このコンサートでは、カール・ドライヤー監督のサイレント映画「裁かるゝジャンヌ（1928年）」の映像を背景に、アメリカ人作曲家のRichard Einhorn（リチャード・エインホーン）がこの映画に影響を受けて1994年に作曲したオラトリオ・「Voices of Light」を、女性指揮者Marin Alsop（マリン・オールソップ）率いるLSOが演奏した。

「裁かるゝジャンヌ」では、大天使ミカエルの「声」を聞き、百年戦争の際、イングランドによる支配からフランスを救った英雄ジャンヌ・ダルクが、敵対するブルゴーニュ軍に捕らえられてイングランド軍に引き渡された末、異端審問裁判で「悪魔の子」の烙印を押され、火刑に処せられるまでが描かれている。ラテン語と古フランス語で書かれた、聖書やジャンヌ・ダルクを含む中世の女性による著作からの引用で構成された詞は、ソロイストとコーラスによって美しく歌い上げられ、そのミニマルで荘厳な音楽からは、白黒の映像と相まって、若干19歳で悲劇の最後を迎えたジャンヌの恐怖と苦しみが切なく伝わってくる。YouYubeでもこの映画と音楽のコラボが見れるので（リンク）、ご興味ある方は是非！

We went to London Symphony Orchestra (LSO)’s “Joan of Arc: Voices of Light” at the Barbican Centre last Sunday. In this concert, live performance by a leading female conductor Marin Alsop and LSO of Richard Einhorn‘s oratorio “Voices of Light” (1994),  inspired by this classic film, was accompanied screening of the  Carl Theodor Dreyer‘s silent film “The Passion of Joan of Arc ” (1928).

“The Passion of Joan of Arc ” is a story of Joan of Arc,  a national heroine of France and a Catholic saint, who heard the voice of  Saint Michael and liberated France from English occupation during the Hundred Years’ War. It summarises the time from the Rehabilitation trial after being captivated by English and Burgundian to imprisonment, torture, and the execution by burning.

A libretto in Latin and antique French from the writings of Joan of Arc, medieval mystics and the Bible, was sang beautifully by soloists and chorus. This minimalistic and solemn score, together with the black and white classic silent masterpiece, was deeply moving and vividly conveyed the fear and emotional suffering of young Joan, who once was a savior of France but whose life was tragically terminated with only an age of 19 by one of the most agonising way.

Benetton Oxford Circus Store Reopens

オックスフォード・ストリート辺りでショッピングする時に、立ち寄るお店の一つ、ベネトンのオックスフォード・サーカス店。高品質の生地を使った、エレガントでスタイリッシュなイタリアン・デザインの服がお手頃な価格で買える、ベネトン・グループのお姉さんブランド・シスレー（Sisley）が、お気に入りだ。店は改装工事のためにしばらく閉店していたが、先週19日に再オープンした（詳細）。

新しい装いのオックスフォード・サーカス店は、イタリア人建築家でデザイナーのピエロ・リッソーニがデザインを担当。19世紀の建物を、都会的で洗練された、ミニマリズム的空間に仕上げた。ベネトンの計画では、2009年のイスタンブール店を皮切りに、世界主要都市にあるベネトン旗艦店を、リッソーニとのコラボレーションで徐々に改装するそうで、オックスフォード・サーカス店もその一環。この計画によると各店のデザインは、その都市の文化を反映したものになるという。リッソーニによると、ロンドン店は「白黒を基調に、自然光、すっきりした線や形、シンプルな材料を使った、クリーンで上品なデザインを目指した」という。店内のレイアウトもゆったりしており、ロンドンのど真ん中だというのに、ゆっくり買い物できる。

ベネトンは、決して高級ブランドではないけれど、インテリアが素敵になると、置いてある商品まで洗練されて見えるから不思議だ。

The Benetton Oxford Circus store is one of our favorite stores and we often stop by the store when we go to Oxford Street. The store closed temporarily for renovation, but reopens on August 19th last week (details).  We like Sisley, the Benetton group’s high-fashion brand, as we can find elegant and stylish Italian-design clothes using good quality materials at affordable price.

The newly revamped Oxford Circus store is designed by Italian architect and designer Piero Lissoni, and he transformed this 19th-century building to a minimalist and sleek urban-chic space. The renovation of its Oxford Circus store is a part of an overhaul plan of Benetton’s flagship stores in world’s major cities, launched in Istanbul in 2009. With this plan, each store expresses the local culture. Piero Lissoni said,“For the London store, we wanted a clean and refined design using simple mediums: natural light, plain materials, clean lines and shapes, black, white”. The store layout is quite spacious, and you can shop at ease in the middle of chaotic Oxford Circus.

Benetton is not upscale brand, but their clothing range looks more sophisticated as its interior has been upgraded. I guess the store make-over really works.

BBC Concert Orchestra – Discovering Music: The Rise of Minimalism

BBCのTVやラジオの番組の無料観覧に申し込む、なんて今まで全く思いつかなかったのだが、以前友人が誘ってくれた、BBCラジオ収録用クラシック音楽のコンサートに同行させてもらい、無料でこんなにちゃんとした音楽を楽しめるなんて、なかなか使えるなと感心したのだった。チケットの申し込みは、ウェブサイト、電話、ファックス、テキストメッセージ、そして郵送で受け付けている。でも同じことを考える人はたくさんいるもので、すでに定員に達してる番組も多い。メーリングリストに登録すれば、興味のある番組やイベント情報がメールで送られてくるので、お目当ての番組には速攻申し込むのが大事。BBCは定員以上の数を受け付けるので、必ずしも席が確保されているわけではなく早い者勝ち、当日は1時間以上前に到着して、並ばなければならない。

昨日も、その友人に譲ってもらったチケットで、サウスバンク・センター内のQueen Elizabeth Hall（クイーン・エリザベス・ホール）で行われた、BBC Radio 3の「Discovering Music」シリーズの「The Rise of Minimalism」収録に行ってきた。Discovering Musicシリーズは、毎回違ったテーマの音楽を解説する番組で、この日も約2時間半に渡り、指揮者のCharles Hazlewoodが、BBC Concert Orchestraの生演奏や録音した曲を交えながら、ミニマル・ミュージックの歴史やその代表的な作曲家と曲目を詳しく解説。Mがフィリップ・グラスやスティーヴ・ライヒのファンで、コンサートには何度か行っているのだけれど、この日までミニマル・ミュージックについては基本的な知識しかなかった。ミニマル・ミュージックの特徴である、微妙な変化を加えながら延々と続くリズムの反復に、時にふっと意識がなくなったりした瞬間もあったけれど、解説付きだと、そのジャンルや曲に対する関心も増すもので、とても興味深く聞いた。またこの収録に際して作られた、代表的な作曲家を詳しく解説した20ページに及ぶパンフレットも、ミニマリズムのスタイルでかっこよくデザインされている。

BBC Concert Orchestraによる演奏曲目は、フィリップ・グラスの「The Hours（めぐりあう時間たち）」のサウンドトラック（抜粋）や「Two Pages」、エリック・サティの「ヴェクサシオン（嫌がらせ）」（抜粋）、モートン・フェルドマンの「Structures’ for string quartet」、スティーヴ・ライヒの「ヴァイオリン・フェイズ」など。そしてトリは、この日のメインである、約40分に渡るテリー・ライリーの「In C」。まだオンエアの日程は決まっていなそうだが、放送日が分かったら、是非もう一度聞きたいと思っている。

I had never thought and had no clue about participating a BBC TV or radio program as an audience. But my friend took me to one of the classical music concert recording for BBC radio a while ago, and I was kind of impressed that we could enjoy such a decent live music concert for free. Application of free tickets can be done via online, by phone, fax, text, or mail. Tickets for popular programs can be sold out quickly, so it is a good idea to join their mailing list that send you program and event information via e-mail, and apply the ticket of your choice right away. BBC issues tickets more than its capacity, so you have to come to a venue more than 1 hour earlier of the start and be on the queue to secure your seat on the day of the recording.

I went to another recording of BBC Radio 3’s “Discovering Music: The Rise of Minimalism” program yesterday at Queen Elizabeth Hall in Southbank Centre, since my friend couldn’t make it and gave me the ticket. “Discovering Music” series explores pieces of music in detail. During the 2.5-hour recording, conductor Charles Hazlewood explored the history of Minimalist music and main composers and their works, with performance by the BBC Concert Orchestra and recorded music in between. I went to Philip Glass and Steve Reich concerts sometimes, since M is a big fun of these two minimalist composers, but I had very basic knowledge about minimalist music before this recording. The repetition-based minimalist music with slow transformation sometime made me loose consciousness few times, but it was quite intriguing with detailed explanation of the music and live performance followed. Also the 20-pages program brochure made for the recording with detailed information about minimalist composers, is well designed with the minimalist style.

The list of music in the recording includes; Philip Glass‘s Suite from the movie ‘The Hours‘ (excerpt) and ‘Two Pages’; Erik Satie‘s ‘Vexations‘ (excerpt); Morton Feldman‘s ‘Structures’ for string quartet; Steve Reich‘s ‘Violin Phase’; and ended with the day’s main music, Terry Riley‘s ‘In C‘. The broadcast of the program is not decided yet, but I would love to listen again if I can get the date.
