“The Volticism” Exhibition @ Tate Britain

テート・ブリテンで開催中の「The Vorticists: Manifesto for a Modern World」展（6月14日〜9月4日）、ヴォーティシズムについて何も知らなかったにも関わらず、スタイリッシュなポスターやそのキャッチフレーズ「現代世界へのマニフェスト」を見て、かなり期待して観に行った。

ヴォーティシズム（渦巻き派／渦巻派）は、20世紀初頭にイギリスに興った、美術および詩に関するモダニズム・ムーブメント。1914年、ヴォーティシストたちは彼らの考えたアバンギャルド・スタイルを広める為、ロンドンを拠点に活動と共にするために結成したグループで、2冊の機関誌「Blast（ブラスト）」を発行しロンドンで展覧会を1回開催した後、第一次世界大戦の勃発に伴い運動は消滅した。この展覧会は、ロンドンとニューヨークで行われた先にも後にも2回きりの展覧会に焦点を当て、パーシー・ウインダム・ルイス、ジェイコブ・エプスタイン、アンリ・ゴーディエ＝ブジェスカの作品や写真、書類など、100点以上の作品を展示している（主な作品の写真）。

キュビスムや未来派の影響を受けたヴォーティシズムは、機械時代のフォルムとエネルギッシュな形象の組み合わせと、大胆な線描とどぎつい色使いを特徴とする。運動以前のエドワード朝のスタイルからは180度の転換だけれど、未来派のダイナミックさと野心、キュビズムの洗練さには及ばず、何だか中途半端。活動期間が短すぎて、自らのスタイルを完成させる時間がなかったのか。

I had a good expectation for “The Vorticists: Manifesto for a Modern World” Exhibition (June 14 – September 4) at Tate Britain before visiting it, though I didn’t know anything about it, but just seeing the poster and its subtitle of “manifesto for a modern world” – I thought it was something dynamic, full of energy and modernistic.

Vorticism was a short-lived modernist movement in art and poetry, based in London in the early 20th century. In 1914, the Vorticists was formed to work closely together  to promote the avant-garde style that they had formulated. They published two issues of the literary magazine ‘Blast‘ and had one exhibition in London in 1915, but the movement broke up largely due to the onset of World War I. Focusing on the only two Vorticist exhibitions, held in London and New York, this exhibition brings together over 100 key works, including photography and literary ephemera, as well as influential pieces by Wyndham Lewis, Jacob Epstein and Henri Gaudier-Brzeska (photos of the exhibiton).

Grew out of Cubism but more closely related to Futurism, it is said that the Vorticists’ style is a combination of machine-age forms and energetic imagery, with an array of bold lines and harsh colours. It may be a drastic change from the previous Edwardian period, but I didn’t feel the same dynamism and ambition of Futurism and sophistication of Cubism from their works, and it was not hot or not cold. Maybe they didn’t have time to grow their style into perfection.

This is not in “The Vorticists” exhibition, but my favorite work of the day by Cerith Wyn Evans.

Modernist T-Towels: Kensal Green and Trellick Tower

コヴェント・ガーデンにあるLondon Transport Museum（交通博物館）で買った、「People Will Always Need Plates」のModernist T-Towels（ティー・タオル）。デザインが素敵なので買ったから、お皿拭きには使わない。イギリス製でコットン100％のこのティー・タオルは、スクリーン印刷の鮮やかなカラーで、Trellick Tower（トレリック・タワー）とKensal Green（ケンサル・グリーン）の街並がデザインされている。ほかの図柄も欲しかったのだけれど、9種類あるモダニスト・デザインコレクションのうち、この2種類しか売っていなかった。ノッティング・ヒルの北にあるトレリック・タワーは、1972年に完成したロンドンを代表するモダン建築で、建築家・Ernő Goldfinger（エルノ・ゴールドフィンガー）によって設計された、ブルータリズム様式の公共住宅。ロンドン北西部に位置するケンサル・グリーンは、これと言った特徴のあるエリアではないけれど、クイーンのフレディ・マーキュリーが火葬された場所で、著名人が多く眠るKensal Green Cemeteryがある。

I bought these Modernist T-Towels (Tea Towels) by People Will Always Need Plates at London Transport Museum in Covent Garden. The 100% cotton tea towels is proudly made in UK, and feature Trellick Tower and houses in Kensal Green in rich screen-printed colours. I got them for its design, so I won’t use them for drying dishes. I wanted to buy other design as well, but the shop had only these two design among 9 modernist design collection. Trellick Tower is a 31-storey block of public housing in north of Notting Hill, designed in the Brutalist style by architect Ernő Goldfinger and completed in 1972. Kensal Green on northwest London is not exciting area, but there is the Kensal Green Cemetery which is one of the finest Cemeteries in London and is known that Queen’s Freddie Mercury was cremated there.

ロンドンの交通の歴史を物語る、London Transport Museum。2005年からの改修工事の後、2007年11月にリニューアルオープンしたコヴェント・ガーデンの博物館のほかに、Acton（アクトン）にある Depot（倉庫）にもコレクションを展示している。ここのショップがなかなか、センスの良い品揃えを誇っている。買い物袋のデザインもモダンで、これを手に入れるために買い物したくなる。オンライン・ショップもあって、海外発送もしてくれる。コヴェント・ガーデンのど真ん中にあって交通の便もいいし、ロンドンに数多あるチープな店で粗悪品を買うぐらいなら、ロンドン土産はぜひここで。

London Transport Museum conserves and explains London’s transport heritage. The main museum in Covent Garden was reopened in November 2007 after two years of refurbishment. Its Acton Depot also holds the majority of the Museum’s collections which are not on display in the museum. The museum shop has a good selection of products, and its modern and stylish shopping bags is another reason to shop there. The museum has an online shop as well and delivers to worldwide (→details). The museum is located in the heart of Covent Garden, so grab London’s souvenirs there, rather than shopping trashes at cheap and ugly stores around London.

Brunswick Centre @ Russell Square

私たちが時折出没する、BloomsburyにあるBrunswick Centre（ブランズウィック・センター）。以前、Renoir Cinemaのエントリーでも書いたけれど、Brunswick Centreは、60年代にデザインされ1976年に完成した、モダニズム建築の集合住宅と商業施設コンプレックスで、老朽化による改築工事の後、2006年に再オープンした。ここにテナントで入っているのはチェーン店ばかりだけれど、便利なのでつい来てしまう。バイクの無料駐車場はすぐ横にあるし、最低限必要なものは取りあえずここで揃う。私たちの行動パターンとしては、到着後はまずランチ。Gourmet Burger Kitchen（GBK・過去のエントリー参照）でハンバーガーか、Carluccio’sでパスタ、またはカフェ・チェーンにしてはちょっと気が利いてるApostrophあたりでサンドイッチ、というチョイスの中から、その時の気分で選ぶ。その後はドラッグストアチェーンのSuperdrugやBootsをチェック。ビタミンや健康食品はHolland & Barrett、キッチン用品やキャンドルはButlersで、そして暇な時は、French Connection（FCUK）やBenettonにも足を止めたりする。見たい映画がある時はRenoir Cinemaへ。平日夕方頃なら、Russell Square（ラッセル・スクウェア）駅に行って、無料紙のEvening Standardをピックアップする。そして締めくくりは、スーパーのウェイトローズでお買い物。という感じ。

メキシコのテオティワカン遺跡を少し彷彿させる（私だけ??）、上部の階段状の集合住宅、窓が大きくせり出していて、冬は寒気が入ってきて寒そうだし、夏は温室効果で暑いんじゃないかと想像しているのだが、どなたかここの住み心地、知りませんか？

The Brunswick Centre is one of the places we go often. As I wrote about Renoir Cinema in the past, The Brunswick Centre is a modernist architecture and a residential and shopping centre in Bloomsbury. Originally designed in 60s and completed in 1976, renovation of the then rundown building was completed and reopened in 2006. Although most of the tenants are the chain stores, the Brunswick centre is very convenient place for us. There is a motorcycle bay just next to the Brunswick, and we can buy all basic needs in one place. What we do there always the same, more or less. First we have lunch; either hamburger at Gourmet Burger Kitchen (GBK / see my past entry) , pasta at Carluccio’s, or sandwich at Apostroph (a decent café as a chain in UK) , depending on our mood. Then we check out drugstores Superdrug and/or Boots, and sometimes Holland & Barrett for vitamins and health foods, and Butlers for kitchen products or candles. We stop by French Connection (FCUK) and Benetton, when we have time and if we feel like. If in evening, I go to Russell Square station and pick up the free Evening Standard. At the end, we go to Waitrose for grocery shopping.

The housing parts above the shopping complex (reminding me of  Teotihuacan in Mexico with its stairs-like shape – is it only me??) are covered with glasses, and look hot in the summer and cold in the winter – can anyone answer the question?

Mid-August Lunch (Pranzo di Ferragosto) @ Renoir Cinema

昨日、Brunswick CentreにあるRenoir Cinemaで、イタリア映画「8月のランチ」を観た。8月15日のFerragosto（聖母被昇天祭）の話なので、15日に観ようかと思ったが、週末の人出を避けて月曜日にした（平日5時まではチケット代も£3安い）。2008年の東京国際映画祭のコンペティション部門にも選ばれたこの作品では、話題を呼んだマフィア映画「ゴモラ」（Gomorra）の脚本の共同執筆者である、ジャンニ・ディ・グレゴリオが主演・監督を務めた。グレゴリオが自らの母親を介護した経験にインスピレーションを得た、この映画は、独り身で母親とローマの古いアパートに2人暮らしの熟年男のジャンニが、イタリア全土がバカンスに出かける8月15日聖母被昇天祭の前日に、滞納中の管理費と電気代と引き換えに、愛人と旅行に出かける管理人の母親を、数日預かる約束をしたところから始まる。母親だけという約束が管理人の叔母、そして知人の医者の母親と、気づけば4人の高齢の女性の面倒を見ることになるはめに。ジャンニは、ワインをあおりながら、嫌々ながらも甲斐甲斐しく世話を焼く。最初はぎくしゃくしていた個性的な老女4人だけれど、最後は意気投合。最後は楽しく聖母被昇天祭のランチを祝うというストーリー。老人介護というシリアスなトピックを扱いながらも、イタリア映画らしく、笑いを交えた、ほのぼのとしたハッピーな映画に仕上がっている。まあ４人とも元気だから介護とは言わないか。高齢の親を残してバカンスに行くイタリア人は身勝手かもしれないけれども、一人で残しておくのは気が引けるのか、面倒を見てくれる人を捜してから出かける辺りが、なんだか憎めない（それとも単にマザコンなだけ？）。

Renoir Cinemaは、アートハウス映画を上映しているCurzon Cinema系の映画館（スクリーン数2）。ユニバーシティ・カレッジ・ロンドンや大英博物館が近いという場所柄か、主にハリウッドを除く外国映画（特にフランス映画）やインディペンデント映画を上映している。映画館の入っているBrunswick Centreは、60年代にデザインされ1976年に完成した、モダニズム建築の集合住宅と商業施設コンプレックス。老朽化のための改築計画は、度重なる住人の反対によって頓挫していたが、ついに2002年に改築が始まり、2006年に商業施設が再オープンした。現在、Renoir Cinemaの他、高級スーパーのウェイトローズ、カフェ、レストラン、ドラッグストア、ファッション・ブティック等が入居している。

We saw Italian movie “Mid-August Lunch (Pranzo di Ferragosto)” yesterday. Since the movie is about Italian holiday Ferragosto, when all the Italians go on vacation and the the cities are deserted, so we thought to see it on August 15th but we decided to see it on Monday to avoid the weekend (and a ticket is £3 cheaper on weekday before 5pm). Written and directed by co-screenwriter of a mafia movie ‘Gomorra‘, Gianni di Gregorio, ‘Mid-August Lunch’, inspired by Di Gregorio’s own experience in living with his own mother, is a cute movie with lots of laughs.  The main character, Gianni, played by Di Gregorio himself, lives in the old apartment in Rome with his elderly mother. By piling up unpaid bills, Gianni was forced into looking after building manager’s mother for two nights in exchange for forgiving some tenant debts, so that the manager could go on his vacation. Gianni ended up looking after total four elderly ladies – his mother, manager’s mother and aunt, and mother of his doctor friend who had a night shift on the day before Ferragosto. Gianni had reluctantly looked after four old ladies with the help of white wines and ‘bribery’ from the manager and the ladies. The four ladies, each with their own strong personality, had some discord at the beginning, but they hit it off with each other, and had good time over the Ferragosto lunch at the end. Though the story embraces depressing themes such as taking care of aging parents and poverty (well, sort of), Di Gregorio was able to make ‘Mid-August Lunch’ heart-warming and optimistic by the power of Italian sense of humors.

Renoir Cinema is a part of art house movie theater chain Curzon Cinemas and shows mainly foreign films (except commercial Hollywood movies), especially French movies, and Independent movies.  The cinema is a tenant of Brunswick Centre, which is a modernist architecture and a residential and shopping centre in Bloomsbury, near University College London and British Museum. It was designed in 60s and completed in 1976. Plans for renovation had repeatedly been blocked by residents’ committees but much-needed makeover began in 2002, and major works completed in 2006. Now Brunswick Centre houses upscale supermarket Waitrose, cafes and restaurants, drugstores, and fashion chains etc.

Dinner @ Skylon

ロンドンは年末から、近年にない寒波に襲われ、毎日最高気温３、４度以下、夜は零下となる寒い日が続いている。今日はその寒さの中、ユニクロのヒートテック下着を着込んで、MのVespaで、サウスバンク（Southbank）のコンサートホール・ロイヤルフェスティバルホール（Royal Festival Hall）にあるレストラン、Skylonに行ってきた。Toptableというレストラン予約サイトでレストランやホテルを予約し、後日評価を書き込むことでもらえるポイントがだいぶたまっていたので、以前から行ってみたかったSkylonでの無料ディナー（前菜・メイン料理・デザートから２品選択。飲み物別）にポイントを交換。

Skylonのオーナー会社、D&D Londonはロンドン、パリ、コペンハーゲン、ニューヨーク、東京等にレストランを展開。近年、テレンス・コンラン卿経営のレストラングループを買収し、コンラン卿とは、今でもデザイナーとして、また株主として緊密な関係を保っている。

Skylonという名前は、1951年に開催された Festival of Britainのために建設された、細長い葉巻のような形をしたタワーからとったもの。５０年代風のスタイリッシュな内装、高い天井、大きな天井のライト、広々としたダイニングルーム。テムズ川に面した大きな一面の窓からは、川向こうの夜景がきれいに見える。SouthbankにはBFI (British Film Institute・映画館)、National Theater（ナショナルシアター、劇場）、London Eye（ロンドン・アイ、観覧車）もあり、Skylonのレストラン・バーはいつもにぎわっている。時間が遅かったからか、この日は窓際のテーブルに座れた。イギリス料理とヨーロッパ料理のフュージョンであるお料理も、なかなかのお味。特にデザートのチョコレートムースとコーヒーアイスは絶品！今晩、ロンドンは気温が０度にまで下がり、最近あまり見れなくなった「霧のロンドン」の夜景を堪能できた。

It has been very cold in years since Christmas. We went to the restaurant Skylon at the Royal Festival Hall in Southbank, with M’s Vespa. I had a lots of reward points with Toptable restaurant reservation site by making a reservation and rating the restaurant afterward, so I got a free 2 course-dinner (without drinks) for two at Skylon.

The owner company of Skylon –  D&D London – owns and operates restaurants in London, Paris, Copenhagen, New York and Tokyo. Following the buy out of Conran Restaurants in 2006, D&D London is now an independent business, maintaining their close relationship with Conran both as shareholders and designers.

The name ‘Skylon‘ came from the Skylon – futuristic-looking, slender, vertical, cigar-shaped steel structure – located by the Thames, and built in 1951 for Festival of Britain. The 1950’s inspired style design decor, with high ceilings and big oval-shaped lighting, and spacious dining rooms. You can enjoy a beautiful panorama with floor to ceiling windows overlooking to the River Thames. Skylon restaurant and bar is a popular place in Southbank with cultural facilities such as the Royal Festival Hall, BFI (British Film Institute), National Theater, and the London Eye. Probably because our reservation was a bit late, we could sit at the table next to the windows. The food at Skylon is Euro-Brit –– a fusion of European and British cuisine. I particularly liked my chocolate mouse with coffee ice-cream! We also enjoyed the mysterious misty London from the large windows view.
