The 54th BFI London Film Festival

10月13日〜28日に開催中の、第54回目ロンドン国際映画祭（54th BFI London Film Festival / LFF）が中間地点を迎えた。今年は、プレミア上映も含めて、世界各国から選りすぐった197本の映画と112本の短編映画を、16カ所の映画館を会場として一般上映している。今までロンドンにいる時は必ず行っていたんだけれど、今年は何だか乗り気になれなくて一つも観に行っていない。来週からの旅行に心が飛んでいるという事もあるけれど、その102ページにも及ぶ分厚いパンフレットを読む気がしなかった。いつもは、赤ペン片手にあらすじを読んで、面白そうな映画をピックアップして、カレンダーを睨みながら日にちを調整して（上映日は1日〜2日）、チケットを予約していたんだけれど。→去年の映画祭のエントリー参照。

日頃見られない外国映画や、普通の映画館で上映しないようなアートハウス系映画などが一挙に見れるのはいいんだけれど、なんせ数が多くて、国とかジャンルを絞らないと、圧倒されてなかなか選べないのが難点。

The 54th BFI London Film Festival / LFF, running from October 13 to 28, is now in the halfway point. This year, the LFF gathers 197 feature films and 112 shorts, and has been screened them in 16 cinemas in London. We always went to the festival whenever we were in London, but we don’t feel like going this year for some reason. We also didn’t have much time to read its 102-page thick brochure, as our minds have been preoccupied with our trip from next week. Otherwise, we always checked the booklet with a red pen on a hand, reading the summary of the movies we thought were interested, and purchased the tickets, struggling to make the movies fitted in our calender (each movie is screened up to four days only). → last year’s post

LFF is a great opportunity for us to enjoy rare movies from unusual countries and art house movies that usual cinemas never invite, but it is utterly overwhelming with the large number, and can’t choose unless you focus on the genre or specific countries or regions – it is a big job…

Ennio Morricone @ Royal Albert Hall

4月10日、ロイヤル・アルバート・ホールで開催された、イタリア人作曲家・エンニオ・モリコーネのコンサートに行ってきた。最も偉大な映画音楽作曲家の一人とされるモリコーネは、これまでに何と500曲以上もの映画やテレビ音楽を作曲。代表作は「続・夕陽のガンマン」や「荒野の用心棒」、「ワンス・アポン・ア・タイム・イン・アメリカ」等、長年コンビを組んだマカロニ・ウェスタンの名監督・セルジオ・レオーネの作品だが、「エクソシスト2」、「アンタッチャブル」、そして「ニュー・シネマ・パラダイス」など、有名映画の音楽も担当している。映画界における長年の功労を認められ、2007年にはアカデミー賞名誉賞を受賞（5回のノミネートにも関わらず、音楽賞自体は受賞していない）。1928年に名誉賞が創設されて以来、この賞を受賞する2人目の作曲家となった。

モリコーネはイギリスでも名が知られているらしく、このコンサートも最上階の立ち見席（立ち見席でも£40もする）を除いて、チケットは売り切れ。私たちは数日前にチケットを買ったものだから、後ろのコーラス席しか席が取れなかったけれど、このコーラス席がなかなか掘り出し物。オーケストラ（The Roma Sinfonietta Orchestra）の裏側で、ステージに近く、演奏が間近に見える。指揮をしていたモリコーネの顔も見れたし、すぐ斜め前ではコーラスを務めたThe Crouch End Festival Chorusが歌っていて、迫力満点。この日は、セルジオ・レオーネの作品をはじめ、モリコーネの代表作を披露、アンコールも数曲ついて、拍手、口笛、地団駄と満員の観客も大喜びで、かなり盛り上がった。

私たちがロンドンでモリコーネのコンサートに行ったのは2度目。前回も同じくロイヤル・アルバート・ホールで、2007年11月のモリコーネの75歳の誕生日の記念コンサートだった。モリコーネも今年で82歳。矍鑠としていて、歳を感じさせない指揮ぶりだったけれど、もうロンドンではコンサートは見れない気がする。ちなみに私たちがロイヤル・アルバート・ホールに行ったのも、この2回のみ。家から遠いから、スケジュールを気にかけていなかった。椅子は座り心地が悪いし、前の席とのスペースも小さいけれど、やっぱりロンドンを代表するホールは、格式があっていい。今年は、ロンドンの夏の風物詩・プロムス（The Proms）にでも行ってみようかな。

We went to Italian composer Ennio Morricone‘s concert at Royal Albert Hall on April 10th. Considered as one of the most influential film composers, Morricone has composed and arranged scores for more than 500 film and television productions. Morricone is known for his characteristic film scores of Sergio Leone‘s Spaghetti Westerns such as A Fistful of Dollars, The Good, the Bad and the Ugly and Once Upon a Time in the West, but also wrote film scores for other popular movies like Exorcist II: The Heretic, Brian De Palma‘s The Untouchables, Giuseppe Tornatore‘s tear jerking Cinema Paradiso. He received the Honorary Academy Award in 2007 for his magnificent and multifaceted contributions to the art of film music, but he has never won any Academy Awards for Best Music, though he has been nominated for five times. He was the second composer to receive this award after its introduction in 1928.

It seems that Morricone is pretty much loved in UK as well, and the tickets were sold out as of the day before the concert, except standing seats on the top floor (and it cost £40!). We bought our tickets few days before the concert and there were only few Chorus seats left. However, these seats we got were not bad at all. It was on the back of the orchestra (The Roma Sinfonietta Orchestra) and we could see the performance quite well. Morricone was facing to us and the Crouch End Festival Chorus, the Choir of the night, was singing just in front of us. In the concert, Morricone performed his classic film soundtracks, including some of Sergio Leone’s spaghetti westerns, as well as several encore scores such as tear-jerking New Cinema Paradise. The concert was quite successful and audiences were excited – clapping hands, whistling, and stamping at the end.

This was the second time that we went to Morricone’s concert. The last time was at the Royal Albert Hall as well, in November 2003, for his 75th birthday memorial concert. He is going to be 82 years old this year, and though he was in a quite good shape but I am afraid that we may not be able to see him here in London again. This was also the second time to come to the Royal Albert Hall, as the hall is a bit far from home and we didn’t check the schedule much. But the hall is magnificent and love to come back more often, though their seats are not comfortable and the legroom is small for modern men’s body size. Maybe try to come for annual summer concert series the Proms this year.

休憩の合間は、お決まりの飲み物（アルコールが主）。会場は満員なのに、カウンターには1人ずつしか担当がいなくて、長蛇の列。列に慣れているイギリス人らしく、皆、忍耐強く待っている。Mは、ソビエト時代の食料品店の列のようだと、いつも文句を言う。

Shortlist / Stylist Free Weekly Magazines

ShortListは、ホワイトカラーや専門職の高収入の若い男性をターゲットにした無料週刊誌。イギリスの男性雑誌・FHMの元編集長で、同じくイギリスにベースを置く男性誌・Maximのアメリカ版のCEOだったMike Soutarによって、2007年9月に創刊された。イギリスの主な都市の、電車や地下鉄の駅、バスターミナル、NCPの駐車場、空港、スポーツクラブ、French Connection（FCUK）のショップなど、男性がよく行きそうな場所で、毎週木曜に配布されている。発行部数は50万部を超え、男性のライフスタイル・マガジンとしてはイギリス最高の発行部数を誇る。

60ページ（今週号）の薄い雑誌だけれど、通勤途中にさっと読めるように、スポーツやテレビ、車、映画、ガジェット（gadget：目新しい道具、面白い小物、携帯用の電子機器などを指す）、ファッションや男性用コスメなど、若い男性が好きそうな話題を簡潔に扱っている。他のイギリスの男性誌で必須の、裸や下着・ビキニ姿の若い女性がないので、公共の場でも読みやすい。無料雑誌だから、ページの半分ぐらいは広告で、記事を探すのが大変だけれど、センスの良いレイアウトでうまく記事をまとめていて、バスやチューブの中でさらっと読める。

女性用には、ファッションや旅行、インタビュー記事、美容やコスメ、レストラン、クッキングなどを扱った、Stylist（ウェブ版はStylist.co.uk）という姉妹誌を発行している。

ShortList is a free weekly magazine launched in September 2007, targeting young professional males. The magazine is founded by Mike Soutar, former editor-in-chief of FHM in UK and Maxim in the US as its CEO. It is handed out every Thursday at around train and Underground stations and bus terminals in main UK cities, and can be also be picked up at NCP car parks, airports and French Connection stores and sports/health clubs. Shortlist boasts over half a million circulation, and is the biggest-circulation men’s lifestyle magazine in UK.

Shortlist is a lightweight magazine with only 60 pages (this issue’s case), but concisely deals with topics that young men like, such as sport, TV, cars, movies, gadgets, fashion and men’s beauty products. The good point is no nudity and no young women in underwear or bikini, so that you can read in public space without feeling embarrassed. The bad point is advertisements that occupy half of the magazine and it is kind of hard to find an article buried in a flood of advertisements, as the magazine is free and obviously relies on income from advertisers. But with its sophisticated layout and tasteful articles make it easy and fun to read in a train or bus.

For women, there is a sister magazine called Stylist (web version is at Stylist.co.uk), talking about anything women love – fashion, travel, interviews, beauty and cosmetics, restaurants, cooking etc as well.

A Prophet (Un prophète) @ Barbican Cinema

今日もバービカン・シネマの月曜割引を利用して、先週封切りとなったフランス映画「A Prophet（原題「Un prophète」、「預言者」の意）」を観た。「夜中のピアニスト」「リード・マイ・リップス」等で高い評価を得た、ジャック・オーディアール監督作品で、第62回カンヌ国際映画祭でグランプリを受賞、第53回ロンドン国際映画祭でもBest Film Award（最優秀賞）に輝いた。イギリスやアメリカでも批評家の高い評価を得ており、2月2日に発表されるアカデミー賞外国語映画賞ノミネートの呼び声も高い。

警察官への暴行で6年の刑に処された18歳のマリックは、アラブ系フランス人の孤児。11歳で学校を辞めたため、読み書きもできない。知り合いもなく刑務所に到着したマリックは、他の囚人たちより若く、脆弱に見える。刑務所を牛耳るコルシカ島出身のマフィアのリーダーに刑務所内での殺人を命じられてから、彼らの使い走りとなったマリックは、様々な「任務」をこなすうちに、多くのルールを学び、タフに成長、リーダーの信用を勝ち取る。コルシカン・マフィアに仕えつつ、賢明で向こう見ずなマリックは、イスラム系の囚人たちにもネットワークを広げ、独自の麻薬取引ビジネスを発展、フランスの都市近郊を根城とする移民の裏社会のリーダーに成長していく。

2時間半という上映時間を長く感じないほど、巧みなストーリー展開とスタイリッシュな映像に引き込まれた。何も知らない移民の若者が、自分自身の機転と魅力を頼りに生き延び、暗黒社会のリーダーに成長していくという、いわばサクセスストーリーだが、刑務所の実態やその中に生きる囚人たちの姿、グループ間の抗争等がリアルに描かれ、現実味がある。増え続ける移民、特に旧植民地の北アフリカ系イスラム教徒の移民たちの刑務所での台頭は、貧困や教育の欠如、人種差別等、フランス社会の問題を映し出している。刑務所系映画はあんまり見ないが、この手の映画としては上出来だと思う。ただ、刑務所や厳しい社会を生き抜くためには仕方ないのかもしれないけれども、主人公がやっていることは所詮モラルの欠けた犯罪行為。マリックの成功は、刑務所や裏社会と住む世界が違う私たちにとっては魅惑的かもしれないけれど、いわゆる普通の成功を夢見ることのできない貧しい移民たちの希望の星にはなってほしくない。

We went to see a new French crime film “A Prophet (French: Un prophète)” at Barbican Cinema with Monday discount. A Prophet, the winner of the Grand Prix at 2009 Cannes Film Festival and Best Film Award of the 53rd London Film Festival, is directed by Jacques Audiard, obtained a high recognition with “The Beat that My Heart Skipped (De battre mon cœur s’est arrêté)” and “Read My Lips (Sur mes lèvres)”  This film won a heart of British and American movie critiques, and makes Academy Foreign Film Award shortlist (nomination will be announced on February 2nd).

Found guilty of assault on a policeman and sentenced to six years in prison, an 18-year old French-Arab orphan Malik El Djebena (Tahar Rahim)  can neither read nor write, as he left school at the age of 11. Arriving at the jail alone, he appears younger and more fragile than the other convicts. Cornered by the Corsican Mafia leader César Luciani who rules the prison, he is given a number of “missions” to carry out, toughening him up, and wins the trust of the mafia leader. While he is working for Corsican Mafia, Malik, unafraid and a fast learner, also creates his own network with Muslim inmates as well. Balancing between Corsicans and Muslims, he discreetly develops his drug dealing business and works his way up through the criminal ranks, becoming a leader of all of France’s immigrant suburbs.

The film is so intriguing and absorbing that I didn’t feel its screening time of 150 min at all. The film shows us harsh realities of a life in prison, survival and battle between different groups, without glamor. A rise of Muslim inmates from former French colonies in north Africa, reflect social problems that French society is facing, such as lack of education, poverty and discrimination. I don’t usually fancy a jail movie, but I think A Prophet is thought-provoking, well-made move of its genre. It is a success story that young and naive immigrant teenager survives on his own quick-wittedness and charm, and climbs up to the top of the criminal underworld. Malik’s success story may be fascinating for us who live in a different world from him, but what he does in the movie is opportunistic, immoral, and is a crime. I hope Malik won’t be a role model for many young poor immigrants, who can’t dream of ‘normal’ success in a society where they don’t feel belonging to.

The Big Dream (Il Grande Sogno) @ BFI 53rd London Film Festival

10月14日〜29日まで開催中の、第53回ロンドン国際映画祭上映作のイタリア映画「The Big Dream (Il Grande Sogno／大いなる夢)」を観た。ベネチア映画祭や釜山映画祭でも上映されたこの映画は、監督であるMichele Placido（ミケーレ・プラチド）の自伝的作品で、イタリアで学生闘争が最高潮に達した1968年のローマが舞台。プーリアの貧しい家庭出身で、俳優志望だが生活のために警察官となったニコラ。彼がおとり捜査官として潜入したローマ大学サピエンツァ校の学生で、学生闘争にのめり込むラウラと恋に落ちるが、ラウラは学生運動のリーダーのリベロとニコラの間で揺れる。ところが、学生運動の制圧に向かったニコラの正体が警官であることがラウラや運動仲間にばれてしまった。ニコラはその後、警察を辞め、俳優育成学校に。でもラウラを諦めきれないニコラは、昔の同僚のつてでラウラに会いにいく。とこれ以上続けるとネタバレになるので、ストーリーはここまで。The Big Dreamは、イタリア人が好きな政治問題、家族、恋愛を扱った、典型的なイタリア映画だ。左翼系映画にありがちな、理想に燃える学生闘士たちをロマンチックに描き、警察や政府を悪者に仕立てる筋書きは、またかという感じ。それに、イタリアには俳優が少ないのか？と思う程、他の映画でも見た顔ばかりだ。ありきたりで名作とは言いがたいけれど、ニコラ役のRiccardo Scamarcio（リッカルド・スカマルチョ）はかっこいいし、テレビドラマ感覚で楽しく観させてもらった。

1956年に始まったロンドン国際映画祭は、約60カ国から選りすぐった300以上の映画を一般上映するイギリス最大の公開映画イベントで、イギリスやヨーロッパ、アメリカはもちろん、日頃は観る機会の少ないマイナーな国々からの秀作を、14の会場で上映する。大作からインディペンデント映画、ドキュメンタリー、実験的映画、古典作品、アニメや短編作と何でも来い。また俳優や映画監督等のトークや無料イベントも充実している。いつもは気合いを入れて分厚いパンフレットをチェックし、早々にチケットを予約（良い作品はチケットがすぐ売り切れる）、ほぼ連日のように映画館通いをするのだが、今年はあんまり観たいと思う映画がなく、なんとなく先延ばしにしているうちに、観たい映画のいくつかは売り切れてしまった。今のところチケットを買ったのはThe Big Dreamを含め、イタリア映画の２作のみ。特に日本映画は今年は不作で、例年は数作観てたのだが、今回はゼロ。ちょっと淋しい。

We saw an Italian movie “The Big Dream (Il Grande Sogno)” at the BFI 53rd London Film Festival (October 14 to 29). The Big Dream, also invited by the Venice Film Festival and the Pusan International Film Festival, is an autobiographical story of the director Michele Placido. A young policeman and would-be actor Nicola, is sent undercover to infiltrate student protest groups in 1968, during the height of the political demonstrations in Rome. Nicola falls in love with Laura, a student activist of Sapienza University of Rome, buy her feeling swings between student leader Libero and Nicola. When Nicola is ordered to join the police force and go to the university to crack down the students’ sit-in, Laura and his comrades find out that he is a policeman and traitor. Later Nicola is accepted by an acting school and quits his police job. He still cannot forget Laura and goes to see her… I stop here so I don’t disclose all the story. The Big Dream is a typical Italian movie talking about their favorite themes – politics, family and love. It is also typical leftist movie, romanticizing the student movement and portraying the police and the government as evil. Also in all the Italian movies I have seen, I always see the same faces – aren’t there many actors and actresses?? The Big Dream is an average movie and not the masterpiece, but Riccardo Scamarcio (as Nicola) was gorgeous and I enjoyed the movie the same way as I enjoy TV drama like “Desperate Housewives.”

The BFI London Film Festival (LLF) is the UK’s largest public film event, screening over 300 films from 60 countries at fourteen venues in London – films chosen not only from UK, Europe and US but also from a wide variety of less known countries that you rarely have a chance to see. Big budget, independent, documentary, experimental, classic, animation, short – anything goes in this festival. LLF also hosts numerous events during the period such as lectures and interviews, educational events and free screenings. I always check the thick festival catalogue, buy tickets well in advance, and go to the cinemas almost everyday. But I couldn’t find many fascinating movies this time and didn’t buy the tickets until now, so some of the movies on my list are sold out already… So far we bought tickets for only two Italian movies including The Big Dream. Japanese movies this year are not as good as previous year, and I couldn’t find anything I want to see – disastrous.
