OPEN HOUSE Pop-Up Shop by John Lewis @ N1 Shopping Centre, Islington

House by John Lewisという新しい家庭用品・家具ブランドの販促のために、大手デパートチェーンのジョン・ルイスが10月18日、イズリントンのN1 shopping centreに「Open House by John Lewis」というpop up shop（期間限定ショップ）をオープンさせた。

House by John Lewisは、最新のデザイン製品を手頃な価格で提供する、新しい自社ブランド。IKEAやHabitatと同じコンセプトで、見た目も似ている。IKEAは郊外に店舗があるから客の奪い合いにはならないかもしれないけれど、繁華街に店舗を持ち、既に経営危機にあるHabitatにとっては、強力なライバル出現だ。以前、色々お世話になったHabitatには同情するが、弱肉強食の社会、力と金があるものが勝つのが世の習いだから仕方ない。

11月10日まで、Open Houseは店内のコーヒー＆ジュースバーと共に、毎日朝10時から営業している。店ではまた、映画上映（火曜日）、ストリートフード料理教室、カクテル等のドリンクがタダのOpen House Party（毎金曜日）など各種イベントが催され、全て無料。日曜日は、ボードゲームで遊ぶことも出来る。さすがイギリスが誇るジョン・ルイス。太っ腹だ。

On October 18th, Department store chain John Lewis opened a temporary pop up shop, ‘Open House by John Lewis’, in Islington’s N1 shopping centre, to promote its House by John Lewis homewares and furniture range.

House by John Lewis is a range of modern but affordable products for a contemporary home. Look exactly like IKEA or Habitat. IKEA shops in suburbia don’t have to go on a turf war with John Lewis, but already troubled Habitat stores on high street must see it as a new powerful competitor. As once a fun, I feel very sorry for Habitat, but this is life.

Open House, as well as a coffee and juice bar in the shop, is open from 10am every day until November 10. The shop also hosts free events regularly, such as Tuesday night film screening, a street food workshop, and Open House Party every Friday with free drinks. On Sundays shoppers can enjoy board games and Bloody Marys. How generous they are!

Range Rover Evoque Wireframe @ N1 Shopping Centre, Islington

エンジェルにあるショッピング・センター、N1 Shopping Centreに設置された、ショッキングピンクの、新型レンジ・ローバーEvoque（イヴォーク）実物大ワイヤー・フレーム模型（→イヴォークのブログ）。季節柄、最初はクリスマスのデコレーションかと思った。

I found this shocking pink full-scale wireframe model of the new Range Rover Evoque at the N1 Shopping Centre in Angel, Islington (→Evoque’s blog). I thought it was a sort of Christmas decoration at first.

パリで行われたモーターショー2010でのイヴォーク一般公開を記念し、レンジ・ローバーとパリジャン・アーティスト4人がコラボ。ワイヤー・フレームを元に、各々、イヴォークの4つのコンセプト「sustainability, luxury, design and technology（持続可能性、高級、デザイン、テクノロジー）」をイメージして創られた、アート・インスタレーションがパリ市内4カ所で展示された。参加アーティストの一人、ファッション・デザイナーのジャンシャルル・ド・カステルバジャック（Jean-Charles de Castelbajac）は、luxuryをテーマにした作品を作製（写真はこちら）。

Range Rover has collaborated with four Parisian artists to celebrate the new compact city car, which debuted at Paris Motor Show 2010. Each artist was briefed to create art installations based on the wire frame of the Evoque, and these designs were created around the four key attributes of the car; sustainability, luxury, design and technology. One of the participated artists, fashion designer Jean-Charles de Castelbajac made an installation based on the theme “luxury” (here for photos).

Paperchase @ Tottenham Court Road

Paperchase（ペーパーチェイス）は、イギリスとアメリカに展開する大手文房具チェーン。文房具不毛の国・イギリスにおいて、ちょっとしゃれたデザインの、オリジナル文房具類やカード等が手に入る。駅構内やデパートのテナント、自社店舗合わせて、イギリスに80店以上ある。以前は親会社であるアメリカのブック・チェーン、Borders（ボーダーズ）内にも店舗を構えていたけれど（アメリカでも300店以上のBorders内に出店している）、Bordersのイギリス子会社が昨年末に破産し、イギリスにある全店舗が閉鎖されてしまったため、Paperchaseも繁華街の多くの店舗を失ってしまった。ちなみに、N1ショッピングセンターにあったBordersに入っていた店は、その向かいで最近閉店したブティック・Karen Millenの跡地に再オープンした。

写真は、南には電器店が、そして中程にはインテリア・ショップが並ぶトッテナム・コート・ロードにある、3階建ての旗艦店。1階は文房具やカード類、ラッピング用品等を扱い、2階は鞄や高級文房具、季節商品やセール品、カフェチェーンのCaffè Nero、3階は画材、工作・クラフト用品、画用紙等の紙類を扱う。大型文房具店が少ないロンドンにおいて、色々なものが一カ所で手に入る貴重なお店だ。

Paperchase is a stationery store chain operating throughout UK, and have expanded their business into the USA in their current parent company Borders Group‘s over 300 book shops. Paperchase has a range of original stationery and cards, an is one of the few stores I can find decent and designy stationery from UK. Paperchase has over 80 outlets; in train stations and some department stores, as well as their own stores. It also had concessions in Borders in UK, but as Borders UK went into administration in late 2009 and store closures followed, Paperchase lost a large presence on the British high street. There was one in the Borders store at N1 Shopping Centre in Angel, but the store moved in the space in the same shopping center, where used be a women’s clothing store Karen Millen which closed earlier.

The photos are of one of their 2 flagship stores in Tottenham Court Road, where electric stores in the south and interior stores in the middle. In the three-floor store, they carry stationery, greeting cards, gift wrappings on the ground floor, and bags, gifts, and seasonal and/or sale products on the first floor, and papers, crafts, and art materials on the top floor – very convenient place to find stationery and gifts in one place.

Wagamama @ N1 Islington, Angel

今日はエンジェルで用事があったので、N1ショッピングセンターにあるWagamamaでランチをした。Wagamamaは、中華の有名店・Hakkasan（ハッカサン）やYauatcha（ユアッチャ）、そしてブログでも書いたPrinciやCha Cha Moonを手がけたカリスマレストラン仕掛人・Alan Yau（アラン・ヤウ）氏が1992年に創業した、「なんちゃって」ジャパニーズ・チェーン（Wagamamaのホームページでは、「pan-Asian（アジア料理）」とあるけれど）。味は今イチなんだけれども、学食のように長いテーブルが並ぶシンプルでモダンなインテリアにスタイリッシュなグラフィック、そして「ヘルシー」な「日本食」（イギリスでは、日本食＝健康的と思われている）が気軽に食べられるというので人気に火がつき、今ではイギリスのみならず、ヨーロッパやアメリカ、中東にも進出している。

店の名前は日本語で、メニューにはラーメンやうどん、そば、やきそば、カレーライス、餃子等が並んでいるけれども、日本食もどきで似非日本食。いわゆる「日本の味」を期待してはいけない。香港系中国人経営だけあって、中華料理の影響が味付けや材料等に垣間見える。例えば今日Mが注文したWagamamaラーメン（下の写真、£7.95）。汁はラーメンとうどんつゆを混ぜたような不思議な味で、麺はふにゃふにゃ。その上にグリルチキン、マトウダイ、エビ、かまぼこ、厚揚げ、マッシュルーム、わかめ、青菜、メンマなどが何でもあり状態でのっている。Mはまあまあいけるよ、とか言っていたけれど、私的には自分で作ったインスタントラーメンの方がよっぽど美味しいと思う。私の野菜カツカレー（£7.65）は、Sweet Potato（日本のサツマイモと似ているが、もう少しべちゃっとしている）、なす、バターナット・スクァッシュ（カボチャの一種）をカラッと揚げたカツとサラダはなかなか美味しいけれど、肝心のカレーはご飯の量に比べて少なく、味も薄くて、コクもうまみもない。かろうじてカレーと呼べる代物だ。また日本ではB級グルメのこれらのメニューも、Wagamamaでは日本円で1000円を優に超える。この味にこの値段?!と思ってしまうので滅多に来ないのだが、近くにこれと言ったレストランやカフェがない時に、たまに魔が差して行ってしまうのだ。

We had lunch at Wagamama in N1 Shopping Centre, as we were around Angel station . Wagamama is a “pan-Asian” restaurant chain (according to its website), founded in 1992 by charismatic Hong Kong-born restauranteur Alan Yau, who also created the prestigious Chinese restaurants Hakkasan and Yauatcha, as well as more casual Princi and Cha Cha Moon I wrote in this blog before. Their food, for my eyes, is below average, but with their concept to offer “healthy” “Japanese” food with affordable price, as well as its simple and modern interir with long tables and cool graphics, Wagamama has gained popularity across UK and now expands the chain to Europe, USA, and middle eastern countries.

The name is in Japanese (means “selfish”), and Japanese fast foods and noodles such as ramen, udon, yakisoba (fried noodle), Japanese curry, and gyoza dumplings are on their menu, but Wagamama is not really a “Japanese” restaurant or quite far from it – so please don’t believe what you eat there is what you eat in Japan. I can see some Chinese influence on their ingredients and cooking. Wagamama ramen M ordered (in the photo below £7.95), with mishmash, like grilled chicken, smooth dory, prawn, kamaboko, fried tofu, mushrooms, wakame and seasonal greens, menma and spring onions, on the top of mushy noodles and bland and flavorless broth. It didn’t seem to bother M, but I prefer to buy an instant noodle from Japanese grocery store for less than £1 and cook it myself. Deep fried Vegetable (sweet potato, aubergine and butternut squash) and side salad on my yasai (vegetable) katsu curry is fine, but curry doesn’t have much taste and too little for the amount of rice – I tasted mainly rice but not curry much. Their food is Japanese fast food and equivalent to a hamburger or fish & chips and quite reasonable, but in somehow, Wagamama manages to make the dish a bit more posh. I rarely go to Wagamama because for me the price doesn’t match to the taste. However, if there is nothing decent nearby, and I craze for something Japanese-ish, I just give myself in to Wagamama…
