マンデラ氏の死去、サッカーのＷ杯ブラジル大会の組み合わせ抽選会、昨日の強風の被害といった見出しがメディアを賑わす中、さっき見たテレグラフ紙ウェブサイトの「most viewed（最もクリック数の多い）」ニュースNo.１は、ブリストル・ハーバーに出没した謎の光る生物。専門家でさえ見たことのないこの珍動物は一体何なのか？テレグラフ紙によると、可能性としては、

• 珍種のサルパ（海洋性原索動物）
• クラゲ：発光遺伝子を持つクラゲの種類は多いそう
• エイリアン：多くの目撃者は、この物体をエイリアンに例える
• アート・インスタレーション：何人かの海洋生物学者は、この光る物体は生物には見えず、人工物ではないかと疑っている
• バンクシーの作品：ブリストル出身の覆面グラフィティ・アーティストの仕業だという人も
• ただのいたずら（prank）

Among all the important news of the day such as Nelson Mandela’s death, 2014 Fifa World Cup draw, and strong storm hit UK yesterday, the most viewed news on Telegraph web is about ‘alien’ like creature spotted in Bristol Harbor. According to the Telegraph, this rare creature that even experts haven’t seen before could be:

• A rare type of marine salp
• A jellyfish: many species of jelly fish carry luminescent and fluorescent genes
• An alien: a number of witnesses likened it to an alien
• An art installation: some marine biologists are unconvinced this was a living thing but artificial
• A Banksy work: some people have suggested that Bristol-born Banksy might be behind this
• A prank

St. Jude Storm Caused Chaos and Destruction

昨日夜から今朝にかけて、イギリス、フランス、ドイツ、北欧等北西ヨーロッパを襲った、熱帯外低気圧による強い暴風・St. Jude（聖タダイに由来）により、イギリス南部では、死者4名、停電60万戸以上、通勤ラッシュ時の公共交通機関の遅れ、飛行機やフェリーのキャンセル等の被害が出た。イギリスに住んで10年の間で一番ひどい暴風だ。

From the last night till this morning, the strong European windstorm, St. Jude storm hit Northwestern Europe including UK, France, Germany and Scandinavia, leading to four deaths, blackouts that affect 625,000 homes, major rush-hour disruption on public transport, and flight and ferry cancellations in Southern England. The worst I’ve seen in past 10 years.

Two years on from Japan Tsunami, but the media has already lost interest…

東日本大震災から丁度2年たった今日3月11日。ドキュメンタリー番組や特集記事で、この節目の日が大きく扱われるものと思っていたが、残念ながら2分足らずの追悼式典の映像程度で、目立ったものはなかった。

もしかして見逃していたのかな？と思って、今日のテレビ案内を隅々からチェックしてみたけれど、関連番組はゼロ。PanoramaやDispatchesといった、時事問題を扱うドキュメンタリー番組でさえ、アメリカの銃問題や子犬の密輸入問題と、今日でなくてもよい話題を取り上げていた。年のため現在、24時間放送のBBCニュースを1時間以上見ているが、既に話題から外されている。

じゃあ、新聞はどうかと調べてみた。BBCニュース「world」欄、タイムズ紙、インディペンデント紙は、サイトで一番重要なホームページでの扱いはなし。

Today, March 11th, marks the two year anniversary of Japan earthquake & Tsunami. I thought I could watch any documentary or big news coverage or something, but disappointedly I haven’t seen anything substantial, other than 1-2 minute coverage of the memorial ceremony.

I thought I might have missed something and checked today’s TV guide, but there is no listing on main TV channels (BBC1,2,3,4, ITV, Channel 4, Five). Even on Panorama or Dispatches, both current affairs documentary programs aired today, they talk about “America’s Gun Addiction” and “Undercover Designer Dogs”. I have been watching BBC news 24 for over  an hour now but zero coverage.

So I quickly checked the newspaper website, to see if the newspapers deal with the issue. BBC news ‘world’ section, the Times, the Independent don’t talk about it at all on the first page which is the most important page of the web.

Not on the ‘Top stories’, but the guardian mentions it on the top of the ‘Latest’ section on the left.

テレグラフ紙は、福島原発近くで撮影した写真シリーズを掲載しているが、スクロールを繰り返さなければたどり着けないほど下の方。俳優のジム・キャリーより下だ。

Telegraph shows a series of photos of Fukushima but not the news coverage, all the way down, lower than Jim Carrey!

デーリーメールは、右欄「world news」に記載はあるが、写真なし。

Daily Mail lists the news on the ‘world news’ column on the right, but without photo to stand out.

主要各国のGoogleニュースサイトも見てみたが、このような扱いは、イギリスメディアだけではないようだ。イギリス版（下写真上）では、アメリカ、カナダ、ドイツ，フランス版とともに、最も読まれたニュースのリストには入っていない。でも驚くことに、イタリア版（下写真中）では最も読まれたニュースの1位、スペイン版（下写真下）では6位だった。

It is not only UK, but also in other countries, too. I checked the Google News site of several major countries, but the result was more or less the same. On UK edition (below top), the news is not one of the most read topics, neither on US, Canada, Germany, and France edition. But surprisingly ‘Fukushima’ is the most read news on Italian edition (below second), and 6th on Spanish edition  (below second), for some strange reason. 

   

イギリスメディアは、ニューヨークの9/11テロは発生以来毎年、2004年のスマトラ島沖地震大津波も長らく、記念日には大々的に取り上げていた。だから、2万人以上の人が亡くなった東日本大震災も当然大きく扱うものだと思っていたから、その扱いの小ささに落胆した。震災・津波発生時のパニック的扱いに比べたら雲泥の差だ。2年経った今でも、原発周辺の住民を含む30万人以上の人が仮設住宅に暮らし、被災地の復興は遅々として進まず、その道程は遠い。原発処理も終わっていないし、放射能汚染の恐れもある。遠い外国に住む人たちに、いつも覚えていろとは言わないけれど、今日ぐらい、ちょっとでも被災者の方達に思いを馳せてもらえたらと思うのは、期待し過ぎなのだろうか。

 

UK media has been talking about 9/11 every year since 2001 and 2004 Boxing Day Tsunami for several years, so I had some hope to see some coverage about Japan Tsunami as well. But sadly it was very little, and they seems to have forgotten (or downplay, according to M) about the Tsunami and earthquakes that killed over 20,000 people. What a difference from the huge media coverage when it happened. Still over 300,000 people are living in the temporary housing, including the evacuees from the vicinity of Fukushima nuclear power plants, and the large part of the areas affected have barely recovered and still long way to go back to normal. Radiation is still leaking from the nuclear power plants and is causing fear among many people. I don’t think the world should care about this incident only, but they can remember a bit of it, at least on the day of anniversary…

 

  

“Renew” Recycle Bins in the Square Mile

「Renew」は、金融街・シティに約100台設置された、LCDスクリーンが両側に備え付けられたリサイクル用ゴミ箱。爆弾の衝撃にも耐えうる構造の、このつや消しの施されたいかついゴミ箱は、なんと1台3万ポンド。ちなみに、80年代にIRAの爆弾テロがロンドンの経済の中心・シティ等にも及んだこと、またアメリカ同時多発テロ事件やロンドン同時爆破事件以降、テロの脅威が増した事もあり、シティ一帯に置かれているRenewも爆弾仕様になっている。このRenewは、ゴミ箱としての機能だけじゃなく、両側のスクリーンには、平日の午前6時〜午後11時59分まで、経済や一般ニュース、天気予報、スポーツ、ファッション、旅行、アート・娯楽関係の情報に加え、チューブ（地下鉄）やNHS等のローカル情報、緊急時には速報、そして広告が随時流されている。→詳細（英語）

1月26日から徐々に設置が始まっていたにも関わらず、今まで全く気づかなかった。スクリーンは低い位置にあるのでちょっと見にくいけれど、信号やバス待ち、友人などとの待ち合わせの際の暇つぶしにいいかも。Renewには現在、ニューヨークやシンガポール、日本からも引き合いが来ているらしい。

Although being installed initially from January 26, I’ve never noticed Renew. It is a bit too hard to look at the screen as the screen is low, especially for tall men, but it would help you kill your time while waiting at a traffic light, a bus or your friend, in case you forget your smartphone with you. It is said that other cities abroad such as New York, Singapore and Tokyo are interested in the concept of Renew.

Londonist: Think London, Londoner, Londonist

ブログに書くネタの情報収集をする時、よく行き当たるのがこの「Londonist」ウェブサイト。既にご存知の方も多いかもしれないけれど、私自身もう少しこのサイトのことを知りたいと思って、ちょっと調べてみた。

Londonistは、「website about London and everything that happens in it」（自身のfacebook infoより）、ロンドンとロンドンで起きる様々な出来事をカバーするウェブサイトで、ニュース、イベント、レビュー、アート、カルチャー、ファッション、レストラン＆バー、交通、スポーツ、そしてロンドンの歴史や将来まで、何でも来い。そのトピックも、メジャーなものだけでなく、エキセントリックだったり、ちょっと変わった出来事、面白いエピソード、誰も知らない裏話など、ロンドンの違った側面も紹介している。

このサイトは2004年に、一都市に特化した、ニューヨーク発祥のブログネットワーク（Gothamist・ニューヨークの愛称、ゴッサム・シティから取られたと思われる）の一員として立ち上げられた。2006年には、イギリスで最も影響のあるトップブログ50位の一つにランクされ（Hospital Clubより）、2010年にはガーディアン紙の「Top London Blogger」にも選ばれた。同じ2010年には、Gothamistの手からLDN Creativeに移り、Gothamistから独立した提携先となった（Wikipedia / Londonistより）。

ウェブサイトは、良くいえばシンプル、悪くいえば特徴のないデザインだけれど、情報量は豊富。その素晴らしい情報収集力、そしてその情報アップのスピードは、多くの印刷メディア、ロンドンローカルの情報サイトを凌駕している。1万5,605人（本日付）もの人たちが、Londonistのfacebookページで「like」する、ロンドンの住人に支持されているLondonist。私にとっては、雲の上の存在だけれど、ブロガーとして少しでも近づければ、嬉しい。

When I surf over the internet, looking for information for my blog, I sometimes find it within Londonist website. Probably many of you already know about it, but I myself want to know more about it so I researched a bit, and write about it to salute their effort to brighten up us Londoners’ rather boring life otherwise.

Londonist is a comprehensive “website about London and everything that happens in it”, according to its facebook info. It covers news, events, reviews, arts, culture, fashion, restaurants and bars, transports, and sports, as well as history and future of London – literally anything. The website not only deals with mainstream topics but also talks about the other side of the city – eccentricities, quirks, secrets, and surprises.

Londonist was founded in 2004, as a part of US-based Gothamist‘s city-centric blog network. By 2006 it was “ranked in the UK’s 50 most influential blogs” (the Hospital Club), and was awarded the Guardian’s “Top London Blogger” in 2010. In the same year in 2010, Londonist was transferred to the London-based startup LDN Creative and became an independently-operated affiliate of Gothamist (Wikipedia / Londonist).

A look of the website is simple and rather generic, but all what you want to know is likely there. They seem to have loads of excellent informants – their up-to-date information comes out very fast and covers all around the city, beating many print media and London local news sources. Massive 15,606 people  (as of today) “like” the Londonist on its facebook page. It is an achievement!
